unfortunately i'm not very familiar w the source material, so i think it was less impactful for me that way. however, i still enjoyed reading it. the lush, tropical settings and imaginative verse made this a vivid read; i think it could actually be a really cool as a stage adaptation because of the dance, music, and photography elements.
it deals w some heavier topics for teens but i think appropriately so for a YA book. overall i preferred my other read from this author (the ghosts of rose hill) but i'm excited to read more from them.

this had a pretty unique magic system with crows being magical creatures, not “Strength comes in many forms," she said. "The lion fears only the fox.”
this had a pretty unique magic system with crows being magical creatures, not only much larger in size but powerful in many different ways - from sun, to fire, to earth, and more. the worldbuilding of an entire kingdom built around a partnership w the crows was quite original and intriguing.
overall i think this was a good debut YA fantasy for a duology. the plot wasn't very fast-paced, which i don't mind but i do think going into more details of not only thia's kingdom, but ericen's could've made up for it. i know there's alot to it bc of the world guide in the back, but unfortunately by jumping into the main action immediately in the book, we don't get to see a lot of it firsthand.
i also was really rooting for an arranged marriage / rival kingdoms romance, but i don't think it's going to go that way :/ which is a bummer bc the BANTER when it was going ughhhhh gimme more i feel robbed ...more

a fast-paced, halloween action fever dream. it's always a good time coming back to kresley cole's world of Lore. this might be too deep into the world/story for new readers despite this being a standalone novella, but the devoted IAD fan will probably have a good time w this one. exciting fight scenes, quippy humor, and sexy romance. the spoopy vibes are peak as well w the halloween setting and various horror film character cameos....more
