When you want to read a refreshing and really entertaining story in a non door stopper format with a plucky "little man", a good magic system and intriguing demons then I recommend to read Demon's Bane which is - I need to repeat it - David's debut novel. Read my full Demon's Bane review....more

I bought the book because I liked the cover AND the blurb.

I finished the book with very mixed feelings. The depiction of the world was above-average. I liked the prose too. But I totally failed to connect with the characters and the story. It was like sitting on a cloud and look what people are doing without any emotion. A thing which happens very seldom to me. And I must admit that I'm not curious to read the next book in the series.
I would have given two and a half stars but that is not possible.

Let us not forget the hamlets and towns surrounded by large walls. You travel by foot, horse, cart and boat. Weapon of choice: Sword, dagger, bow, crossbow, spear and lance. Different religions, beliefs and myths are sprinkled across the land like so much dust and the political situation is best described as Kleinstaaterei....... Stephen Baxter is a well know British science fiction author, and his novel is my first encounter with Mr. Baxter's work. Interestingly, the main protagonist of the book is water. The Setup The story begins in 2016. After being held hostage for five years four people - Lily, Helen, Gary, and Pierce are freed by a private security force of AxysCorp. - a multinational company owned by Nathan Lammockson. The freed prisoners return to their relatives in England where something has changed in the past five years - the weather. Rain is now a constant companion and high tides threaten London. There are messages of rising sea levels from around the world, but these dire portents are just the prelude to what will happen in the next 36 years. We accompany Lily, Helen, Gary, Pierce, Nathan and some of their relatives, friends and colleagues through the 36 years of Flood, starting with the flooding of London, where the apocalypse begins...
Reading impression I read the well done German translation of the book Dan Simmons tells the story of the last expedition of John Franklin, who tried to find the Northwest Passage in 1845 with the ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus. Based on the know facts Dan Simmons depicts an expressive and impressive metaphor of the expedition. I felt the cold on nearly every page. And not to forget the intense description of the feelings of the expedition members.Beside this you learn a lot about the customs and traditions of the Eskimos. The appendix contains the list of crewmembers, a glossary and explanations of Eskimo terms.
I recommend this book warmly to everyone who is interested in - Arctic Zone - Discoverers - Abysms of the human soul. ...more

It is the the 6th volume of the Zach series. Normally I don't read book from within a series. But in this case I made an exception. I needed a break from fantasy and so I decided to read something different. And to be honest The Flaxen Femme Fatale is different.
This is another case of Zachary Nixon Johnson, the last freelance P.I. on earth in the year 2070. As in the previous books he has to save the world from a dangerous woman with superpowers. His main aides are HARV - a computer which is wired directly to his brain- and GUS - an experimental ultra-powerful weapon with own AI.
It is a fast pace story with a lot of humor and some interesting thoughts. I really appreciated the dialogues between Zach, HARV and GUS. And there are a lot of reminiscence to the 20th century.
Anyway this is definitely a book which you either hate or like. To my surpise I like it and therefore I will read the rest of the series too.
