We're switching to Le Guin's fantasy in my current class on her works and despite the genre shift, her writing style feels so familiar to me at this point. The classic tension to find balance between light and dark, the long sea journeys, Le Guin's presentation of manliness as patience and self control, the giant (and tiny) dragons, the school for young magicians- it all was just so enchanting. I wish I would have read this as a kid but am so glad to be reading it now. On to book two!...more

The second half was pretty repetitive but I didn't mind that so much. I'm going back over the highlights with Wyatt and we're looking forward to trying lots of the tips out! I thought Orwell's precautions were interesting and all-too relevant in ways. But, there were multiple aspects that were really weak that ended up getting in the way of my full enjoyment of the novel *such as* -There were quite a few details that felt inconsistent considering Winston's lack of information about the past, such as him referencing an item of which he would likely have no real concept. -Additionally, in including Goldstein's book within the novel, there was a unique opportunity to reveal more crucial and unknown information, but I feel like Orwell just word-dumped all of the concepts he'd been working out the whole novel up to that point, which didn't give much credit to his readers (and was boring). -Orwell infuriatingly switched subjects often without reestablishing who he was talking about, which led to quite a few mix-ups in which I had to reread in order to understand who the heck he was talking about, since he hadn't specified. One example is when Winston was reflecting on his relationship with Mr Charrington, and then the text shares "both of them" know that this couldn't last and therefore cling to each other with a "sort of despairing sensuality" (obviously now referring to Winston and Julia). Eek.
Basically, while reading I just kept thinking of Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451, and I just think those are better....more
