First of all, I think everyone agrees Jacob was/is/always will be awful. But I didn't expect to hate Helena almost as much. Even knowing how she grew up and what she went through, I found her lack of empathy towards her mother, even after having kids of her own, really hard to swallow. The whole book was her lamenting about how much she loved her father - before and after finding out what he had done - and how much she essentially hated her mother. It also went on and on about the marsh, the UP forest, it made some chapters drag. I wanted to read this before seeing the movie, and now I'm questioning even watching it lol...more

I truly don’t know how to feel about this book other than annoyed. It was way. too. long. Nothing happens other than a ton of sex - which speaking of, the Uber scene? Absolutely gross and unnecessary. Anastasia and Nate were cringy. Her calling him bub made me roll my eyes every single time. Nate acted like an idiot, he’s a grown man and he doesn’t know what conditioner is? Or a curling iron? Their whole not relationship/relationship was a slog to get through too. The communication, I did appreciate and all of the positive talk about therapy and boundaries. And I absolutely loved Henry. But I’m not a fan of their story or the epilogue. I knew I KNEW it was coming but I thought MAYBE JUST MAYBE the ending would be more original. It wasn’t. I’ll at least be reading the second in the series since I bought it and it’s shorter, but if that doesn’t blow me away I may be done with maple hills lol...more
