This was such an interesting book to read and in probably the best way. I love books where I am reading about someone else's life and I end up learning something about myself. This book was just that, for me it was also a little of of its own therapy since it was so intense and so in depth and the reactions by the client and the therapist were so unique and interesting in their own way.
This book is not for the faint of heart or for those easily triggered. There are multiple trigger warnings I can list here including: abuse, death, suicide, depression, anxiety, and quite a few more. This is a story about real people and the things they went through.
I did enjoy the fact that this showed how each person will heal differently from others and that there isn't one set way to heal emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or physically. I also appreciate the fact that the author admitted to not being perfect and talked about how her own life affected her decisions with her clients. It really is an eye-opening book and I believe it is important to read.
Overall, I am giving this five out of five and highly recommend it if you have any interest in the human mind....more

This story was so sweet and heartwarming. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I started it this book, but I got a wonderful story about family and food. I love how Ms. Lim incorporated aspects of the Chinese culture and the changes that have happened over generations. This explores those generations a bit and examines the difference between them and the difficulties in getting along. While there was a bit of insta-love going on in this book, I was alright with it because it was not a big focus of the story. Instead, the romance was more of a side plot, if anything.
I loved the magical realism element of this story. It wasn't needed, but I feel as though it for sure added to the story. I loved the depiction of food having a physical and a mental impact on the people who eat it. This really shows how much food can affect a person, which I feel is underappreciated in our day and age. This book shows how important thinking things through, food, and being yourself is such an important aspect of figuring out your own path in life.
Overall, I loved this book. The only thing that is keeping it from a 5 of 5 is the instalove, which I really just dislike immensely. However, I do like how the book ended. I highly recommend this book, especially for anyone who enjoys fiction and food and a dash of romance.4.5 out of 5 for me....more

I really enjoyed this book. Historical fiction has been very hit-and-miss in the past for me especially since I am a history buff of sorts. This was a very cute story, which surprised me because I had completely expected it to be a darker kidnapping story from Victorian England. However, this ended up being more of a romance than I had thought it would be. That being said, it was still quite enjoyable and I will probably read it again as a relaxing read that did make me laugh.
The characters were alright and interesting. I think that there was some room for improvement, but I did think that they were individuals and I could for sure see the people interacting as they did in the real world. They did seem to be much more modern than the time period that the book was set it, which while making the book easier to read, also confused me a touch.
The plot was something different. It really felt a bit all over the place for me and unfortunately made it difficult for me to keep track of the timeline and how many days or weeks had gone past between scenes. I found myself skimming a bit when it came to Walter’s scenes and learned that I didn’t miss much, which was unfortunate. When I read this book again, I’m curious to see if this changed.
I know this review sounds a bit more like I didn’t enjoy the book, but it really was a quick read and I did enjoy reading it. While maybe not the most well written in points, it was enjoyable and I do plan to read it again. 4 out of 5 from me....more

This is probably one of the cutest romance books I received this book in exchange for an honest review, which has not altered my opinion of this book.
This is probably one of the cutest romance books I have read in a long while. I’m not exactly one to read a lot of contemporary romance books, and hate-to-love is a trope that is always so hit and miss for me. However, this book was a home run for me, satiating my need for a Hallmark movie. I enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the one-liners. This book follows Olive as she suffers through her twin sister’s wedding subsequent food poisoning. When she and the best man are the only ones who don’t get sick, they end up going on a free honeymoon together. However, they seem to hate each other, so the goal: don’t kill each other and stay apart. That doesn’t end up happening, at all.
Our main character, Olive, is really an awesome character who represents more of the normal woman, rather than the model type. She is described as having curves and comes from a large Hispanic family that reminds me of the families I have met. She is super close to her family and they come first over any romance or anything else. While I do wish we had a little more from Ethan’s point of view, it was very interesting as well. He is the very attractive, snarky and sarcastic, brother of her sister’s husband. Awkward? Maybe a touch. Ami was also adorable and I really liked the little bit we got of Olive’s twin sister. The trip itself as quite interesting as well and I loved the small details that helped me visualize where they were at. It sounded like a lot of fun!
I highly recommend this story for lovers of romance and, from what I’ve heard, fans of Christina Lauren. This book was a cute and quick read that made me smile and very happy. Highly recommended!! 4.5 out of 5!...more

I am really enjoying this series and I do plan to continue it. That being said, this book took me quite a while to finish, like two months on my phone. However, I don't want that to cause you to think that it was not a good book due to that. This book was a lot of fun and I enjoyed basically all of it. It had me laughing as well as rolling my eyes at points due to humor or comical stupidity. There are enough plays on words, puns, gnomisms, and pop culture references to send your head reeling. It is a lot to take in at once.
The story itself follows a group of gnomes, a dwarf, a halfling, a sheep-person, and a griffin who find themselves on a mission to inform the king (see last book for introduction and how he got the throne...it's strange...) about the halfling uprising. The halflings are bombing the gnome homes, and these misfits want to bring that to the attention of the king and go on a very convoluted and roundtrip journey to find him. There is also the POV of King Gustave in this book which is quite interesting as he makes his own discoveries about what is going on in his newly inherited kingdom.
I highly recommend this series for fans of The Princess Bride, and Monty Python. Overall, I gave this 3.5 because it was a bit of a slow read for me....more
