The Neath #2

Herrick's Lie

Rate this book
Underground.
Underwater.
Out of time.

Ollie had only wanted to make things better at Herrick’s End. And he thought he had, until he sees the stark truth spelled out in His friends are in danger, and it’s all his fault.

The good news? There might be a solution. The less-good news? It’s hidden at the bottom of a deep, dangerous lake. Leaping into that water, he knows, is a monstrously bad idea.

It’s also the only idea he’s got.

One thing is Ollie’s quest to right past wrongs is about to open up a whole new can of wormwalkers in the extraordinary underground world he now calls home.

Buckle-up, Buttercup because you are in for one heck of nail-biting, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping adventure in this second installment of T.M. Blanchet's The Neath Trilogy!

Ollie has finally started to see in himself what everyone else has seen and known for months ever since he arrived in The Neath. But yet sometimes Ollie still second-guesses himself, as we all do from time to time.

And it's in those moments where he finds the strength and courage to fight for what and those he cares for. But it's not going to be easy. Nothing in The Neath is easy. Nothing in The Neath is as it seems. But Ollie and co. is starting to put the pieces of this very complex and dangerous puzzle together.

I did not see the plot twists that were coming! My jaw may have literally unhinged and hit the floor. And if I have a feeling that what I think is going to happen in the last installment of The Neath Trilogy, I'm just not prepared for that emotional roller-coaster....but I'm sure as heck looking forward to the next adventure and seeing if Ollie can complete this complex puzzle in time to save those who he loves.

I'm rooting for Ollie until the very last page is turned! And yes, even though this is only the second book in this series; it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite trilogies I have ever read!

I received this eBook free via NetGalley for review. However, it has taken me quite a bit of time to get to it because I did not realize that it's part 2. So, I had to read part 1 first. I apologize to the author and NetGalley for the late review, but here it is.

Wow! What a wonderful, horrific, crazy ride!!! I am sorry, but part of book 1 is mixed into this review because it just must. Never have I been cheering for and so very exasperated by a character/characters. T.M. Blanchet has a terrific imagination I am all in for any other books. I really don't have words, this is an adventure, friendship, struggles beyond apprehension, figure it out as you go story. Ollie is not your usual hero type, but ends up coming into his own as time goes by. But the IMAGERY that is PAINTED with WORDS made my imagination soar and I felt as if I were right there with Ollie and Tera. I want to visit "The Neath", but not for too long... wink wink. However, the story isn't all feel good rather it is quite sad. Dealing with abuse, neglect, imprisonment, hatred and many other tough topics. But, in my opinion, these topics are dealt with in a more soft handed educational manor rather than detailed expletive gory details. There is horror for sure, but not extreme and reference to abuse, as well as weight shaming (mostly self inflicted). I look forward to the third book, this is a trilogy right?

So Good!

I love the inventiveness of this book. The Neath is a fully imagined world with memorable creatures and landscapes. Ollie, Tara, and friends are well developed characters who I rooted for throughout the whole book. I hope this gets made into a movie!

When Trisha contacted me and offered me a paper ARC I couldn’t say no. This is the second book in the Neath trilogy and I demolished book one in one sitting so I was really excited for this one, and it didn’t disappoint!

The Neath is this world created by witches and is directly beneath our own world, it was created as an escape for victims (abuse etc) that wanted to take control of their lives and provided a very real underground where they couldn’t be found unlike the safe houses and similar that are provided in real life. The topic of abuse, just like in the first book, was handled really well and added an extra dimension to the books.

I love all the creatures in this one, it definitely added an extra to what I felt was missing from the “fantasy” elements in book one. The twists and turns were super too! The whole George Herrick thing really surprised me in this book and it took a real turn I hadn’t been expecting. I’m excited to see who’s been the real mastermind behind Ollie’s entire thing! I’m excited to see where book three takes us, and will be impatiently waiting! The set up for the next book is completely there, and I’m excited to follow Ollie into the next adventure!

If you’re looking for a new fantasy author, I recommend checking out the first book in this trilogy, and then this one when it releases later this month! It’s really imaginative, relatable and page turning all at once!

Thank you so much to Trisha for the gifted copy of book two 🙏🏻

Herrick's Lie is the second book in the Neath trilogy by T.M. Blanchet. Released 28th March 2023, it's 330 pages and is available in hardcover, paperback, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats.

This is an engaging and very well imagined portal fantasy adventure featuring an ensemble cast of wonderful characters, creatures, and settings. The author is wonderfully adept technically at her craft, and the characters live and breathe (even the not-quite-human ones, and there are many). The settings and world building are the star of the show, however, and are nuanced and richly detailed.

For fantasy readers who have enjoyed worlds imagined by Gaiman, Miévelle, and Kagawa, this is a worthy addition to the genre. Despite being book 2 (of 3), the author is adept at providing the necessary background and it works well enough as a standalone. It was good enough that the plan is to hunt down the first book. Book three is due out in 2024.

Four and a half stars. Well worth seeking out.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

As a fan of the first book, I found myself even more engrossed in book 2, which masterfully expands upon the world-building introduced in book 1.

One of the most compelling aspects of Herrick's Lie is the development of the main character, Ollie. From the outset, Ollie has grown significantly in confidence. It makes his journey in book 2 more enjoyable as he navigates through new challenges with a new sense of purpose. Ollie was so insecure and unhappy in book 1 that it is really refreshing to see him happy in this book although he still has a lingering sense of waiting for the other shoe to drop where he keeps questioning that Tera really loves him, for example.

At the beginning of the book, Ollie is reveling in his newfound happiness and life in the Neath. However, his bubble bursts when he finds out that the women of the domestic violence organization have gone missing and an unknown foe wants Ollie to return to Boston. He can't return to the surface since his lungs have changed due to living in the Neath for too long (by choice.) This sets up a dramatic journey for Ollie to figure out how he can get back to the surface. He never really questions that he will potentially sacrifice himself for the others which is honorable of him. Tera is his ever-loyal and upbeat logistical supplier and emotional support girlfriend.

The exploration of new parts of the Neath as Ollie determines how to get back to the surface successfully was another highlight for me. The author's vivid descriptions brought these locations to life. I particularly enjoyed the mutant animals and mermaid like creatures.

What truly sets this book apart though, is the big twist at the end. Without giving anything away, the revelation left me eager to learn more in book 3.

Overall, Herrick's Lie is a superb blending of storytelling, character growth, world-building, and suspense that kept me hooked from start to finish. I can't wait to see where the journey takes Ollie next.

So... "Tell me, do you know any Ukrainian traveling songs?" iykyk
Before starting the book I wasn't sure it would stand up to the first one - "Herrick's End".
It did.
I loved every second spent with the characters, laughed out loud and sat tense and expectant, waiting for whatever came next (obviously I had had no clue what was up ahead).
As much as I love Ollie and Tera and all the others, Laszlo is my favourite character.
I'm still in awe from how real the characters felt, from their bickering, to their mental breakdowns, awkwardness and strong overwhelming emotional responses... so well-written. So... oddly relatable, given the characters are living in a fantasy world, dealing with magic, prophecies and a thousand different types of weirdness...
It's definite. Laszlo is the best.
I'm so looking forward to seeing more of him in book 3...
Speaking of which, I can't wait for book 3! I'm certain I'm gonna start reading it as soon as it's out.
So if you're into fantasy, go give Herrick's End a try!

I loved Herrick's End and was thrilled to continue the story. The characters, world-building and plot are so engaging, I could hardly put the book down. The author does a good job of reminding the reader of what happens in the first book. I can't imagine skipping any part of this story, but strictly speaking, you could read this as a standalone book.
There are lots of creative twists and turns in this book as is expected. The descriptions are so good that I can really imagine myself if these astounding worlds! These are the kind of stories that make me really want to have a pot of tea with the author. What an interesting mind to create such a world and creative solutions to very real problems of The Brickside.
As with HE, there are some references to domestic violence and torture but the mentions are brief and not very descriptive or gory.
The ARC I received had quite a few errors that need to be corrected, but I'm sure those will be polished by final publication.

I was super excited read this next installment of the Neath Triology!

I loved Ollie in the first book and again he is really the driving force behind what makes this book great.

In this story a message has been sent to the Neath that people Ollie knew on the Brickside have been harmed or kidnapped and will die if he doesn’t come up. Thus starts a journey to find the legendary apparatus that will allow him to breathe Brickside.

To be honest this book felt simultaneously slow and rushed. It was fairly dragging until the last few chapters when so much happened and was revealed at once.

I’d also love some backstory for the attendant people who staff the entrances to places in the Neath. They just seem beyond unnecessary.

An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my thoughts in any way.

Herrick’s Lie is the second book in The Neath series. Sometime after the events of the first book, Ollie receives a message that he must return to the topside. In order to make that happen, he embarks on a quest with Tera, Lazlo, Meatball and a cast of other interesting characters. The story is never dull and the author clearly put a lot of time into building this world. I do think it’s necessary to read the first book before reading this book. There are too many details that are important to the plot. I’m very much looking forward to the next book.

I love how confident Ollie’s character has become and how vulnerable he is. I absolutely love Tera she’s a total girl boss. I want her to be my best friend 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼.

I thought we met a lot of magical creatures in book 1 but the magic and new creatures that we met in book 2 exceeds anything I could’ve imagined 😍.

I loved the hermit 🦀🥹.
Lazlo is the best side character and friend to Ollie.

I have fallen in love with T.M. Blanchet and her writing. It’s fast paced, action packed and leaves you on the edge of you seat I just needed to know how everything was going to tie in.

I’m so excited to follow Ollie on his next crazy adventure in book 3!

Rating: 4.3/5

Review: A really strong run at world building coupled with constant movement, made for an entertaining read that ended too soon.

The narrative is from Ollie's perspective which can run a bit dry as he is ruled by emotion. He is at once petty (jealouse) and almost Buddha like in understanding. The two polar perspectives don't marry well when pushed together. Perhaps develop the character rather than devolve.

The world this story resides in rarely makes sense and that is what makes it so good. Biologicially this is a hot mess yet you must discard logic and enjoy the inventiveness of the authors creation. Really trippy shjt. Looking forward to the next.

Just got the hardcover and LOVED this beautiful book. I read the first book of this series, and I just couldn't believe how wild her imagination was...I was sort of curious if Blanchet could keep up that level of invention for a whole second book! Welp, she did. I live in Boston and every time I walk around now can't help but feel that the Neath is a real place, under my feet all the time. A beautiful story of love and friendship on top of it all. Just what I needed.

This is the second book in a series, and despite the author's attempts to tell you things from the first novel, it will nto make a whole lot of sense if you haven't read that first installment. It's the kind of somewhat goofy fantasy you find in Daniel Pinkwater's books, although not quite as charming; truth be told, I found it overwritten and kind of tedious. If you liked the first one, though, go for it--you might like this continuation of the story.

When I requested this book I didn't know this was the second book in the series. So before trying this I had to read book 1. I didn't like it. Since I already requested it I decided to give book 2 a go. However, I didn't like this book either. I felt no connection to either of the characters. Some parts felt like they were dragging on, while others felt rushed,

I received this book from NetGallery in return for a honest review

The concept behind the world in this book is new and intriguing, which really piqued my interest. The 'Neath is made out to be a wondrous place of refuge and the imagery of this other world was grand. However, Ollie is a difficult character to engage with. The book was well written, and the adventure for Ollie to get Brickside in time is fast paced. Unfortunately, it was difficult to want to go on the adventure with him.

WOW! What a fantastic novel, I loved it. Perfect for fans of Douglas Adams/Daniel O’Malley and V.E.Schwab. Blend of Sci-Fi, fantasy, touch of horror and a thriller rolled into a wonderful world of rich characters. Can’t wait for the next instalment. Thank you to #netgalley and publisher for the opportunity to review.

After finishing book 1. I didn't see where the story could go for another book. But I was wrong. This is a great extension on this original world!

There is more to see and learn in this crazy place. Some twists I didn't see coming. But was glad to be here for it. Though I have to say one thing that drives me so beyond freaking crazy is that dam fat shaming that Ollie does. UGH seriously. Like I can't do it anymore. As a plus size women I don't walk around and be like oh pretty flower oh I'm so fat. Like he cant enjoy life or simple things because he is bigger and there just never seems to be an end to it. But outside that seriously this author does a great job building this world. Creating characters that engage the reader. How it even came to be Herrick's End still just leaves me wondering. What if we had a place like this? I don't want to spoil the findings in this book. Hopefully you give this a go.

This series has quickly become of my favorites and the author is one of my favorite people I have worked with! I was honored to be given a review copy, and devoured it much like the first! Unlike many trilogies I have read, the second book kept me enthralled just as much as the first! If you want a book set in a underground world, fantastical creatures, companionship of all kinds, diversity, magic, action & family then this is your book! Come join us in the Neath under the streets of Boston, where you will find a world like no other!

ARC received from Tiny Fox Press

Ok this was a fun book! I read Book 1 (Herrick's End) just before this one and I'm loving the direction the author is taking the story. The fantastical and spooky elements (I need more from the witches stat) are a fun ride, but are made to feel more realistic with the inclusion of the human characters.

What I liked:
- Ollie continues to be a relatable character - he would do anything for his friends and has a big heart, but continues to doubt himself at times. He is an easy character to root for and I have my suspicions there will be some more truths revealed about him in the next book.
- The supporting characters are wonderful. They provide some heart and comedic relief. I appreciate how they have become a big family, something Ollie didn't have brickside.
- More action! This book felt more exciting than the first. I think the first book focused a bit more on the world building and this one increased more on the plot side of things.
- The twist! Even though I knew something was up with George Harrick, especially with the title - I did not expect that reveal.
- The set-up for book 3 is perfect! Some of my questions were answered in this book, but I have many more. If book 3 was out, I would be starting it asap.

What I didn't like:
- This book would do incredible with a map or some kind of visual aid. That's more of a personal preference though because it helps me visualize the story a lot better. I also think sketches of some of the creatures or characters would be incredible.
- I need more on the witches' backgrounds. This is one area that has been hinted at in the past, but not fully explored yet in the present. I'm really interested in how they fit into the story and hope they have a bigger role in the third book.
- There were a few parts of the story that felt as though they dragged on and the pace could have been picked up.

In the Neath, Ollie and Tera have been enjoying life together, happy to see the changes underway at Herrick’s End. But when Ollie discovers old friends topside are in danger, he must risk his life to find answers…

This world is so creative and magical that it balances the tough topics at the core of this story. Survival. Vengeance. The healing and happiness that can be found after suffering abuse. Action and consequences and risking everything for those you care about.

I loved seeing Ollie grow more confident in this book. His vulnerability is so raw and honest; it’s easy to root for him. Tera’s bravery, quick-thinking, and support of Ollie is fantastic.

Great sequel!

It’s out March 28th so you’ve got time to read book one first.

Thanks to the author for the gifted ARC.
