Ooh, how fun to don one's detective cap and suss out a killer in the midst, all under the guise of a party!
Pip, our favorite teen detective from A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, is joining friends for an evening of sleuthing. They're having a murder mystery party set in the 1920s, complete with costumes and accents. And when someone "dies", there are plenty of clues and red herrings to cast suspicion in every which way.
Reading this novella reminds me just how much I loved the original series. Pip is such a smart and spunky heroine, and it's thoroughly entertaining to follow along as she tries to figure out the killer. The way the clues are laid out and the setting of a remote island with a dysfunctional, wealthy family exude so much Agatha Christie vibes.
Since this is just a pretend murder, the stakes are low. It feels more cozy than suspenseful, but the book does a nice job of injecting some dark atmosphere into the mix, so it's still quite riveting. In fact, I had trouble putting it down and breezed through the whole thing in about two hours.
I will say, I don't generally gravitate towards novellas (or short stories, for that matter). It's because I find them to be a bit unsatisfying. Just as you're getting into the whole thing, it's already over. And it felt a bit like that here. I wanted more. More of the murder, more of the solving, more of the explanation. But I suppose it's better to end up wanting more than wanting less, so that's a small complaint.
It was definitely fun to revisit Pip's world. I was a little sad that the series was over, so I'm glad to have this bonus story so I could experience just a bit more of what I loved.
Also, as an aside, is this sort of murder mystery game a real thing? Because I need it in my life pronto.

Super cute novella to the A Good Girls Guide to Murder series. It all takes place at a murder mystery party which was a really fun setting and it was fun trying to figure out who the killer is. Plus it was so fun to be back in the world of Pip.
This novella really showcases Pip’s personality and how good she is at solving mysteries. Would recommend if you liked AGGTM or as a prequel if you haven’t read the series yet

Do we have games like Kill Joy in real life? Because it looks pretty entertaining (・∀・) Even though Pippa had to go as far as reaching with her case solving (but I love to see hate-to-lose Pippa).
And this is really a good prequel to the start of the series as you get a sense of why Pippa chose to do her project on Andie Bell's murder case.

Absolutely loved this prequel.
Since this is all before there events of agggtm I love how we were able to see where Pippa's detective type personality came from and also what events caused her to do the final project that she did in agggtm.
The overall writing was yet again amazing and I loved all the characters. Connor was funny like always and just seeing Pippa interact with her friends was alot of fun.
I also love the artsy little add ons for the case. Always makes a book better

i don't think i've ever read a novella addition to a series and been like "yeah, that was necessary." but that doesn't stop me from trying.
this was no exception though.
it only provided insight into how pip decided to do her senior capstone project in the first book, which is possibly the least interesting thing it could possibly be about while still technically being in any way related to the actual mystery.
it also exclusively follows the plotline of a murder mystery dinner type board game, which are not famous for being interesting and filled with shock value.
it was a quick read and not terrible but that's the nicest i can be.
bottom line: if you're like, "i'd read holly jackson writing about literally anything," this is the novella for you.

Have you ever wondered why the young Pippa Fitz-Amobi chose the Andi bell murder case for her final year Senior Capstone project?
This book will give you the answer to it. This is a prequel to the A Good girls guide to murder series.
It starts with the details of the murder mystery party that Pip’s friends were conducting. Pip is not at all interested in attending it. But due to the insistence of friends and situational pressure, she decides to join the party and she is hooked on the murder mystery when the party starts.
There will be an instance in everybody’s life when they find out their true passion. We can see how Pip discovered it in this book. Will Pip be able to find out the killer of the fictional Reginald Remy based on the clues she was given by those who were conducting the party? Holly Jackson will provide the answer to it through this book.
My favourite three lines from this book
“Actually, I know what I am going to do my project on”
“Work breaks didn’t sit well with Pippa Fitz-Amobi and freedom didn’t feel very freeing.”
“Their plates were empty all apart from Pip’s because there had been too much thinking to do to concentrate on eating.”
As this is a prequel to the whole series, you can read it even if you haven’t started it. You can also try reading it after finishing the first book in the series, as it answers some of the unanswered questions in the first book.
The author is dealing with fiction within fiction. There is a scene that reminds us of metalepsis (breaking the fourth wall in literature), which is done brilliantly by the author. It is done subtly and unconventionally, enhancing the thrilling experience for the readers. To know whether Ms. Jackson teases the audience or really imparts metalepsis, you have to read this book as I can’t mention more about it as it will be a spoiler and hinder your reading experience.
This will be a decent choice if you are looking for a YA thriller book.

Hurray! It was so much fun to read an epilogue to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and spend some quality Agatha Christie-sque meets Clue style murder mystery time with our longtime brainy detective friend Pip!
What I like about this book?
- I’m absolutely blessed to have a chance to return back Pippa Fitz-Amobi’s universe before her murder obsession hits the roof! I didn’t like how her character evolved at final book three and I still wish the author gives her another chance redeem her mistakes and her happy ending with Ravi. But meeting with her character before she solved Andie Bell mystery was so much meaningful.
- Claustrophobic murder mystery game was also entertaining. The plotline reminds us “And Then There Were None” meets Clue. The events take place in an island called Joy where can be reached with only on boat that ships specific scheduled time. Reginald Remy, the patriarch of the Remy family and owner of the Remy Hotels and Casinos empire in London. He’s found dead in his study. There are six people in the house during the murder time.
One of them is killer. Pip plays Celia Bourne, estranged and neglected niece of Remy, working in London as a governess to a well-off family. The other suspects are children of Remy: Bobby( elder son), Ralph ( younger son), Lizzie ( Ralph’s wife), Humphrey the devoted butler, Dora the new cook. The investigation conducted by Howard Whey played by Jamie , one of their hosts and big brother of Connor. ( You may recognize those names if you read the first book of the series)
- I loved Pip’s detailed approach to see things looking through impeccably clever perspective. I loved her Poirot style theatrical revelation to unfold the mystery at the end ( it was one girl show!)
- Catching a quick glimpse of Ravi at the end enlightened my mood!
Overall: that novella I’ve devoured in two hours definitely reminded me of my love and dedication to the series! I need another book! I need it ASAP!

I have heard of the series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder before and when I saw this book on NetGalley and that it’s a prequel to the first in the series, I figured it would be a good place to start. Boy, was I wrong…
If you decide to start this series, do NOT start with this one. The whole book is a murder mystery party which is great and all but nothing happens aside from a bunch of kids playing a fake murder game. Maybe reading the rest of the series and falling in love with the characters would be great before picking this one up.
I could see that being thrilling for elementary to middle schoolers who don’t want to be too scared, but given all the drinking and swearing from a bunch of kids who can’t even drive yet, I am not completely sure who the audience for this particular book is even supposed to be targeted towards.
The characters and their murder mystery characters were also really tough to keep track of.
This would have been a DNF from me had it not been from NetGalley.
I’m still trying to figure out why this book was even needed.

I'm familiar with the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, but I've never read it. I might have to now. This was slow to start. It was difficult for me to learn the multiple characters' names, and even more difficult for me to learn the cast of characters they were playing. By the time that all began to make sense, I was sucked into the murder mystery. Pip is a hoot.

Kill Joy is a super cute prequel novella in Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series.
The events of this story all take place on one night and it's a fun night indeed. The setting, a Murder Mystery Party hosted by Pippa's friend, Connor, and his brother, Jamie.
If you've read the entire series, you may recognize these two names from Book 2, Good Girl, Bad Blood.
I am huge fan of this series and was very happy to get to spend a night with Pip and her friends. Do I think this is necessary content? No, I don't, but for long-time fans of the series, it's enjoyable content.
Not only is it a quick, fun read, I also definitely walked away with a better understanding of Pip's inspiration for her Capstone Project, the impetus for all the action in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.

okay so this wasn’t a bad start to the series. however i wasn’t a big fan of this novella. i thought that pip acted superior compared to her friends at times and it was kinda annoying. another thing was how she criticized everyone in this book, from the character she played to her friends and their roles. also she was lowkey a sore loser towards the end of her game, but i do see that her theory was very well thought out!
i loved the side characters within this book. they made the game fun and the funny scenes between some of the characters made the book better for me. i’m not exactly the biggest fan of pip yet, but i do hope that will change once i read the series. not to mention pip missed the point of the game, which was to have fun, and it felt as though she didn’t want to interact with any of them despite being their friend. she was quiet pretty much the entire game but i liked how the banter between her friends remained.
i feel like the book played too much into the role of celia and while some ppl might like that, all i read abt was constant criticizing and how pip wouldn't do things her character did or working out the details of celia's life to prove she wasn’t the killer. she got too eager when she played the game and it was to the point where she forgot abt the other ppl and stopped seeing them as her friends. pip gave off introverted vibes which i usually don’t mind in a book, but in a group setting differs when u choose to be isolated. this might be a personal irk thing for me tho
there was a bit of mystery mixed into their lives as they played this game, and i did find myself to be intrigued, but not as much to improve my rating. the small suspenseful scenes consisted of pip’s imagination and the horror conveyed definitely influenced the scenes. another thing i found to be childish was how ant continued to pull sal singh into the story of a fictional murder. it was as though he would always be tied to murder, and it was quite sad on his part. and getting to see ravi at the end definitely makes me excited to start the series!

This is perfection😭
1) I fell in love with the concept of the murder mystery game party during the first page.
2) this is a great prequel! It sets up and tells a lot about Pip’s character and the whole Sal Singh + Andie Bell murder.
3) even though it’s a game and none of it was real, I was still so immersed in the mystery and the game. It was honestly so enjoyable!!
It was suspenseful yet so hilarious because it was just teenagers goofing off.
Though the end of the game wasn’t huge, I got a kick out of Pip and her defeat and how she handled it. Because I know someone exactly like that😂 *coughs* my brother
But ahh I just love this so much! And you could read it before the first book and still grip you!

I read the whole AGGGTM series last year and LOVED it (despite having mixed feelings on the third one), and I've been meaning to get to it for a while- and I'm soooo glad I finally did!! 🥳 While it was super short, it managed to be so entertaining and fun and reminded me of my love for agggtm 💖

Side note: I also listened to the audiobook and that was great too!! 🎧💖 Would recommend that format- it was a really fun story to just pop on when I also wanted to do something else at the same time 🥰🥰

Świetna sprawa dla fanów trylogii, taki przyjemny dodatek, ale pewnie gdybym przeczytała tę książkę przed samą trylogią (a tak właściwie powinno się robić według kolejności) to myślę, że nie wiedziałabym za bardzo o co chodzi i nie czerpałabym zbyt wiele przyjemności.

Kill Joy is the prequel to Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. Pip and her friends are invited to a murder mystery party. Clues are revealed throughout the night, and guests must figure out who among them is the killer. It was super fun to revisit the characters we know and love, and even Pip's poor dog gets a mention. I had to subtract two stars because the plot seemed almost identical to that of the film Knives Out. If you haven't watched the movie (with Daniel Craig and Chris Evans, OKAAAAYYYY!), I'm sure you will really enjoy this story.

for a murder mystery novella it was good and i think i’ll definitely like a good girls guide to murder. i was lowkey digging it. i was interested to see the characters alibis and their reasonings for what they did. pip’s theory was really good and i was kinda disappointed the actual murderer was easy to guess. but why was pip so pressed? it’s just a game but she’s over here crying for what.
overall, i’m glad i got to experience it with, my girl, vio 💗 hopefully the trilogy doesn’t disappoint us <3

This is the prelude to the sensational bestselling and very well worth reading (well the first two books in the series) A Good Girl's Guide to Murder trilogy. We join Pippa Fitz-Amobi a few months before the start of the first book in the series and she's not looking forward to going to her friend's 1920's themed murder mystery / roleplay game. Pippa and her friends (not as much as she) find themselves enveloped in the game as they try to work which one (or more?) of them is the murderer.
A book to tell us where Pippa's blog idea and concept really first came to mind? It's an OK read, catching up with the characters back when they were all 'friends', but at 176 pages it sure felt like a pointless read. Still, great characters, nice reality, and genuinely interesting murder mystery game and of course the human dynamo that is Pippa Fitz-Amobi, so I still have to give this read a Three Star 6 out of 12.
