Slow Butterfly: How Healing Your Thyroid Transforms Everything

Rate this book
Do you have an underactive thyroid?

“I’m tired. I’m losing my hair. I can’t lose weight. I have bad moods and feel like crap. They said the blood work is all fine. It’s probably just stress.”

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism—underactive thyroid—and the most common autoimmune disease in the world. Unfortunately, it's often not diagnosed properly, and when it is, monitoring or medication are the only options offered.

As a result, many people suffer for months or even years without a diagnosis, and those on medication may still feel unwell, unable to live their best life.

But this doesn’t have to be the case. If you have an underactive thyroid, there is much you can do yourself to improve your symptoms and live more optimally.

Your life should be more than just a matter of surviving day-to-day. Empower yourself so you can start to improve—today—wherever you are on your healing journey.

Very interesting and informative book. Too many people actually overlook the s\s of thyroid disease and chalk them up to not enough sleep, or simply, stress. Therefore, they do not tell there Dr. exactly what they have been experiencing, until it is possibly too late.

Gajjar has not only touched upon traditional and non traditional ways to deal with thyroid disease, but can help help deal with other conditions as well.

Gajjar's book is beautifully written, and truly helps transform the healing process.

Thank you, Goodreads Giveaways, and to the author, Amy Gajjar for this Wonderful book!

I won this book via Goodreads Giveaway.

This book has a lot of really great visuals and detailed information related to thyroid function, nutrition, and other health aspects. None of this will really surprise anyone who has dealt with long term health issues, specifically undiagnosed or autoimmune related concerns.
It walks the line between eastern and western medicine philosophies, and encompasses many different approaches (mental health, physical exercise, nutrition, pharmaceutical, etc).
It was inconsistent with the in-text references, which makes me a tiny bit suspicious of some of the statements made, but not enough to go down a fact-checking rabbit hole. The author comes across as well-educated and open-minded and I generally take these sort of texts with a grain (or pinch or two) of salt anyway.
We don’t live in a world where it’s possible to implement every one of these solutions immediately (exposure to plastics, eating fresh, organic, local foods and only specific ones), so this can certainly feel overwhelming to someone reading a text like this for the first time. It can feel a bit exclusive as well (not everyone has the resources to achieve some of the recommendations).
I also felt like this was a bit disorganized and had quite a bit of repeat information.

Overall I enjoyed it, and I will certainly reference some of the visuals and charts more than once. The information content was good quality.

So That’s Why I Feel Like Crap

Great book for both doctors and patients. Some technical parts followed by the layman’s explanation. Good for anyone whether they have Hashimoto’s, another autoimmune disorder or just stress. Great advice on how to live better. Some simple, breathe correctly. Some harder, no caffeine after 2pm. Great quotes throughout the book including one from Yoda, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering”. —Yoda, Jedi master, Star Wars. I really liked that one.
I think I highlighted most of the book. There are so many things to try and important things to remember. It can be overwhelming at times, but Dr. Gaffar reminds us to take it one step at a time. Don’t try to do all the changes at once. There’s enough stress in our lives already. Very helpful.

Things I liked about this book: listing specific foods for each of the different diet things that could be worth investigating. The first part of the book was easy to read. Explaining the thyroid functions using drawings and diagrams.
Things I struggled through: lots of the scientific/medical terminology. Also, parts of the book were not for someone like me with long term thyroid hashimotos and was more about how possible reversals could occur.
Overall, I did learn a few things from Amy and her research. Detailing what each of many vitamins could do to help the thyroid deficiencies will stay with me and gave me ideas on what would work for me.
I won this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaway and really appreciate that there are non-fiction books as part of the giveaways.

Thank you D. Gajjar.
Your description of someone with an underachieve thyroid described me precisely. This was an informative read. I learned a great deal and feel much better equipped to speak with my doctor.
An index would be helpful for finding specific things more easily.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. I found it packed with a broad range of useful information for improving your health. It starts out focusing on the thyroid and its associated health conditions. It then goes on to provide many practical tips that could bring relief for other types of health conditions as well. It offered specific suggestions based on both traditional and non-traditional medicine.
