Sanctuary with Kings

Rate this book
Evanthia has spent half her life trapped inside the Seven Veils. When the house crumbles, she seizes her moment and runs from Birsha and his twisted pleasures. But pleasure is what she needs to survive, and the dark streets of London leave her starving and vulnerable.

Rescued by a mysterious monster who vows her sanctuary, Evanthia must piece back the woman that Birsha tore apart. Quiet sanctuary is no cure for her endless hunger, but the war brewing on the horizon is the last place she wants to be. Hiding with sleeping dragons and lonely monsters in a castle made from dreams might be a fantasy, but it’s not enough to keep the nightmares at bay.

When not even Evanthia’s tired heart can remain dormant in the tender care of the kings who keep her safe, she must make the decision. Hide from her past forever, or face the man she fears most on the battlefield.

Kathryn Moon is a country mouse who started dictating stories to her mother at an early age. The fascination with building new worlds and discovering the lives of the characters who grew in her head never faltered, and she graduated college with a fiction writing degree. She loves writing women were are strong in their vulnerability, romances that are as affectionate as they are challenging, and worlds that a reader sinks into and never wants to leave. When her hands aren't busy typing they're probably knitting sweaters or crimping pie crust in Ohio. She definitely believes in magic.

This was okay but there wasn’t even a little glimpse of an emotional connection between any of the characters. It all felt very physical and for such a long book, it was really hard to get through. I was not invested and even the sex scenes felt tedious after a while. It was an okay ending but it was nice to see the characters from the previous books.

Favorite in the series!

This one had a lot of trauma to get through and some beautiful healing scenes too. This whole series ended up touching on different kinds of sex work and how it isn't the same for anyone and I really liked that.

Monsters in this one were:
Dragon
Gryphon
Minotaur
Werewolf

With cameos from all our previous characters too!

I really enjoyed the overall arc of the series. And still to date this is the only RH/Why Choose that I love. It has just the right amount of everything.

I spent a lot of time savoring this book. This is the end of the Tempting Monsters era, the final book in the series that brought me to Kathryn Moon, Birsha’s clock finally running out. I loved it so much. This series has been a journey and one I enjoy immensely and continuously return to.

I love this world and these characters were delightful (Kathryn Moon writing dragons? yes please). I cherished every word, Evanthia’s journey of rediscovery was so sweet.

I don’t think a review can encapsulate how perfect this book is. It is sublime.

Clockwise, text in white reads: delectable marking, legends brought to life, vengeance is sweet, posessive dragon, decadance, baths, & swords, cozy nests & trinkets, hurt her & perish. Cover of Sanctuary with Kings, book 3 in the tempting monsters series by USA Today Bestselling Author Kathryn Moon is in the center of the page. Background is a group of red roses. The first of the Rooksgrave series where I didn’t feel a connection to the characters. All the relationships felt more like relationships of convenience rather than anything deeper.

For a book where the main character feeds on pleasure, there were a ton of fade to black spicy scenes which isn’t something I had scene done by this author before and I was kind of disappointed.

I think my biggest problem with Kathryn Moon books now that I’ve read a few is that her FMCs are pick me’s and not a girl’s girl in the bunch. And I just don’t vibe with that. They are all consumed with dick and live in men’s worlds generally and their lives revolve around men and their problems and issues and concerns. And they all use men to try and solve their problems with the other men in their lives.

So far, all the books I’ve read by Kathryn Moon have a FMC with all MMCs which is just silly really when you are talking about monsters. These monsters are not really monsters in any real sense. They act and think and behave like regular men just with more alpha-ness it seems. I do give her points for at least having some gay moments between the MMCs.

Somehow Esther, Hazel, and Evanthia move in this world all with zero women friends. This is just ridiculous especially those who are sex workers. It makes the world improbable and lacking in depth and breadth. Esther and Hazel are actively hostile to other women and so their semi-warmness to Evanthia in this book comes out of left field. Evanthia has a moment early in this book where she might have one (1) female friend, but her men make sure that doesn’t happen. It’s honestly very frustrating. The first thing the men in all these books do is remove the FMC from anyone else, isolating her. It’s a red flag babes, it just is.

On a technical level, this last book is hampered by several things. It’s being asked to do A LOT. Not only do we have a whole new FMC and her men to introduce, which is usually a sizable book on its own, we are also closing out a series and ending a bad guy and introducing for reasons unknown a whole King Arthur lore dump. That is a tall order for any book. I think that’s why there are many fade to black scenes and time skips and jumps. It gave the book a herky jerky feel as we awkwardly go from man to man in this book while trying to build to the Birsha climax. What ends up happening is 400 pages of build up to an absolutely insane speed run to the end. Esther and Hazel and all their mens make a brief appearance and that means the author has to juggle so many characters at that point the reader’s head is spinning. The good news is that Birsha is such a whatever villain that you barely need to pay attention. I think this book shows why it’s very hard to have a nebulous, distant villain. The stakes are so low as to be non-existent and I don’t know or care about Birsha at all. And I really don’t care or understand the King Arthur stuff. At some point it’s just ridiculous to have the heroine with Excalibur where it doesn’t even matter really. I don’t get why all that was added.

These books really frustrated me, the first two hampered by problematic sex worker representation which at least this one didn’t have as much of. But I am still left with a million questions about this male oriented monster world. Are all monsters men? Or are they out here creating men monster only spaces? Because apparently monsters are gendered (which lol) yet I’ve never seen a female monster. They don’t go to a brothel? They don’t go to the theater? They don’t have human lovers? They don’t fight evil bad dudes? You see what I mean about this male oriented world that Kathryn Moon builds? Like everything is about monster dick. Period. And everyone is obsessed with it. And it just is so boring. It makes the world building just feel so empty and soulless. Where are the girls????????

I couldn't find myself caring less about the story, the characters and even the spicy scenes.

There seemed to be little to no chemistry for any of these characters when the previous books were so character focused. As well as very little descriptions so I couldn't form any sort of mental image as to what anyone looked like.

The sex scenes were written in a confusing way where most of the time I struggled to even know what was happening and where everyone was. They would start out, get to the good part and then fade to black?? For "monsters" they all acted extremely human-like. No fun power based scenes or..oddities in the downstairs department besides one character. They were all very boring.

I honestly struggled to get through this one where the others I would consume in less than a day.

The dynamic between Evanthia and her monsters gave me Lola and the Millionaires vibes. So much caring and healing for everyone involved. 🥺🥹❤️ I know it’s a good reverse harem when my ‘favourite’ keeps changing and, by the end, like Evanthia I had 4 favourites.

The HEA in the epilogue felt well-earned, and I also really enjoyed how the overarching plot of the Tempting Monsters series wrapped up. Just a really satisfying conclusion to the book and series, all around.

(Also, 🥵, because as a Kathryn Moon book it’s naturally very steamy and sex positive.)

This has been my least favorite in the Tempting Monsters franchise and I'm so saaaaaaad! 😭 It had some good moments/interesting imagery, but overall fell flat compared to the first 2 books-and even the novella!!

Plot? What plot? There was no real story. I got excited at the beginning when Evanthia was hanging out with Lillian. I thought it might lead to a W/W relationship! Especially since both characters were so traumatized and in need of healing. But no. Just endless chapters of Evanthia being stuck in a castle, having nightmares, her not wanting to commit to 4 very contrived relationships because she didn't feel deserving and I guess fighting/training as her only hobby leading to an eventual EXTREMELY anticlimactic Birsha battle. (WHAT WAS THAT?!)

Personality?? The only trait Evanthia had was that she was traumatized and full of shame. She was a watered down Lillian from Basilisk. She had no other personality and her mates were unfortunately similarly one note and frankly boring, making the relationships- i.e. the very heart of the Tempting Monsters series- chemistry-less. The only one I really really liked was Hywel. He had some good dialogue and cool powers/abilities. Hywel was awesome. Connall was a lamer Ronan from Company of Fiends, Asterion was a lamer Hunter from Fiends and Laszlo was basically Auguste from Rooksgrave but all with less personality and charm. None of the last 3 really had powers/cool abilities either. They were just dudes. At least Lazslo could fly I guess but he only did it like once? lol.

LASTLY: WTF is all this fade to black and skipping over sex scenes crap?? One of the main reasons I HONORED this series as the best erotica I've ever read is that it never did that! Sad that this is the way such a great series ended. 😭 I'll definitely be re-reading the first two books in the future but not this one. (I'll still read any Tempting Monsters Novellas that may come out though 👀) 2.5 out of 5 nightmares.

That was…a bit of a chore to get through and I only did so because I loved the original cast so much and a few of these new characters - Although they all kind of annoyed me at some point sooo there’s that.

I was soooo over the whole Birsha plot line. This one really tried to be a healing romance while also being a darker villain arc and like pick one because the commingling didn’t work for me.

I ended up skimming sooo much and like didn’t miss anything??? Disappointing overall. I know Moon has teased more novellas from the world, but after books 2 and 3 and then the basilisk novella - maybe don’t?? Nothing has come close to that first book and that makes me sad.

This definitely had more of a plot and storyline than the previous two. I enjoyed seeing all 3 of the groups spend time together and become friends. However, the series would have been more enjoyable had it been a faster pace, and less pages. I’m going to need some fast pace, short reads to recover

Did I finish. Yes, after what felt like a very long time. I probably disliked this book the most from the series. The ending was very anticlimactic. The main character was depressed for most of the book and it took a toll on me. I was so bored. But I do struggle with characters that are depressed so this wasn’t new. The pacing of the story was frustrating and slow. I was expecting more from this but it just kind of all happened. Like it was just suppose to end the story and they added new character with lots of sexy times to make it more interesting but that bore me too. Don’t get me started on the Minotaur. I was so mad at him for most of the story.

I was putting off writing this review because I just wanted it to end and never return to it.

WOOOOOO DADDYYYYY 🥵 i knew kathryn wouldn’t disappoint! evanthia was in captivity for hundreds of years and she finally escapes. she’s found by our sweet and chivalrous bull. birsha won’t stop until he recaptures her, so she’s whisked away to a castle. here she meets her other men. we get to watch thia find her ground again after being locked away for so long. she blossoms with the help of these men and even becomes a bad ass! the plot is fantastic & the smut is yummyyyyy. a perfect end to this series!

Can’t believe it’s over

This was such a great third book and conclusion to the series!

Watching Evanthia work through her trauma and realize not all of her is lost.

Her guys are wonderful and patient, even if her Minotaur was a bit clueless at times. The spice was delicious.

On the TBR because it's a continuation and I needed to read. The Arthur stuff lost me. Another late night. Asterion was hit and miss for me. The initial rescue was nice and then the cold shoulder avoidance act. Most of the time I was hoping it would just be a trio, but the got their act together. Fave was Hywel. A lot of characters bouncing around from the previous books so got confusing with who was who.

Definitely the weakest in the "Tempting Monsters" series.

The author tried to cram tons of stuff in here: introducing Evanthia and her story, introducing the 4 separate love interests with their own stories, build up the romances, include the lengthy sex scenes that the series is known for, have cameos from the previous MCs and their own harems AND have them be relevant/ useful to the story, and wrap up said story. Sadly, since all that is crammed in, none of it worked all that well. The book somehow both rushed through things AND dragged.

Problem no 1: Evanthia's trauma healing story is interesting, but not all that fitting in a series about monster fucking fun. There's a sense of "We HAVE to fuck for Evanthia's healing" in the beginning instead of it being chemistry between the characters. Sorry to be an asshole, but I signed up to this series for the fun sexual liberation of women not being afraid to ask for what they want, not this.

Problem no 2: Seeing as the book had to include tons of stuff, the character work is lacking, and the author plagiarizes herself a bit to make her work easier. Evanthia is very similar to Hazel, Laszlo is Auguste with Amon's wings, Connall is Ezra, Asterion is Hunter; where was the wonderful creativity of Constantin, or Nireas, or Dr. Underwood/ mr. Tanner? Only Hywel was brand new, but the author didn't seem to like him or Asterion very much considering their lack of spicy scenes compared to Connall or Laszlo; Asterion, in particular, seems almost like an afterthought, and same goes for Hywel's hyped , it's just shoved in at the end while Connall's exact same plot was plenty fleshed out.

Problem no 3: I couldn't possibly care less about all the King Arthur stuff. I've personally never cared for the myth, and probably never will, and don't get why it's treated as an endless source of inspiration for some reason. It's been milked dry by now.

And an honourable mention: I get that the author was pressed for space, but was it really a good idea to include so many fade to black spicy scenes in a series that's explicitly (heh) known for going all-out with them?

TL;DR: Hywel deserved better. I said it.

3.5 ⭐️ This was alright. Admittedly if it had been any other author, I may have DNF-ed. The first half is all hurt/comfort, which this girly loves, but not for half a book. The plot was VERY minimal. If more would have happened I would have enjoyed it much much more. Kathryn Moon hasn’t been hitting for me like she use to.

I loved this.

What a little conclusion to the Tempting Monsters series!! And hooray for seeing old friends again!!! Asterion my sweet minotaur, and Connell my sweet werewolf, got their happily ever afters, there was a DRAGON shifter, a griphon, and Evanthia was delightful and charming and broken, and omg Kathryn Moon is excellent at weaving in growth and grief and happiness into one big mosh of happy feelings, and ugh this was so fun and perfect and I loved it.

And Esther!! And Hazel!! My babies!! UGH so much fun hanging out with them and watching Evie gain friends and trust people and it's fine I'm not crying you're crying.

Haters can suck it I would read this 20 more times.

Sanctuary with Kings was such an incredible conclusion to the Tempting Monsters trilogy.

Evanthia has escaped from The Seven Veils but still isn't free of everything that happened to her. Nor is she free of the mental torment Birsha continues to dole out. She is rescued from the streets of London by a minotaur who takes her to a castle for sanctuary and healing.

At the castle, she meets four kings in their own right who also need sanctuary and healing. As they slowly dance around each others' needs, 1the desires and attractions build.

This book hit every expectation I had for a series I love and then exceeded them all! It reminds us that healing is never linear and that it looks and feels different for everyone. It shows that there's power in kindness and strength in love. That desire and possession can also mean freedom when they come from someone who loves every piece of you, even the jagged ones.

I enjoyed every single page of this read from the tender emotions to the scorching hot spice. I am sad to say goodbye to the story, but am so content and happy after its satisfying end.

*le sigh* I think Evanthia is my favorite of all the Tempting Monsters heroines. Held captive for hundreds of years by Birsha, she’s the daughter of the goddess Hedone. Hedonism incarnate. She’s been used and abused for far too long, eventually freed in the battle against Birsha. Her yummy monsters include the Minotaur, a gryphon, a Red Wolf, and a dragon. This is the final book of the series and gives us that perfect resolution we’ve been waiting for. (Ding, Dong the Dick is Dead!) As much as I loved Esther’s story and Hazel’s tale, this is my favorite Tempting Monsters book, by far. 💜

This was absolutely wild. WILD. If you like monster romance, this is for you. If you don’t like monster romance, this probably isn’t for you.

I think this was a great wrap up and the culmination of the trilogy with some absolutely crazy spicy scene, the ones you absolutely expect from Kathryn Moon.

The smut in this one really was superior, i don't make the rules ✋🏼🫡

🧶Additionally, the four main male characters were the best so far imo, they each had their own personality and Evanthia built a genuine connection with each one, which I really appreciated.

🧶The beginning has a darker tone to it due to Evanthia's trauma and her healing journey was really good to read about.

❝ "We're going to take your heart, Evanthia," Hywel whispered. "We lay claim to it and to all of you. And if you want to fight us with your pretty claws and sweet little teeth, we will take your scratches and bites too. All of you." ❞

I'm going to miss my favorite spicy af victorian era monster romance series soooo much. Such a bittersweet feeling now that it's over. 😭♡

But also a good one because 'you know who' is NO MORE. 🎉🎉

Evanthia's story differs in mood from the first two. Unlike Esther and Hazel, she was not a willing participant in her circumstances. Her story takes place after being freed from centuries of captivity. This is very much a healing, self rediscovery, comfort smut story.

There are heavy topics discussed in this book, make sure to check the content warnings.

Evanthia's evolution over the story is a thing of beauty. She starts out as a complete shell of her former self, but with a little love and care grows to be more than she ever thought possible.

After her rescue Evanthia ends up in the protective care of four monster Kings.

Asterion— the utterly devoted, I loved you the first moment I saw you, I'll be your shield minotaur.

Conall— the playful, flirty, will blow out your back with his stamina werewolf.

Laszlo— the most patient, kind, and romantic gryphon who ever was.

Hywel— the treasure hoarding, commandeering, nap enthusiastic, 'oh shit he's got double dicks' dragon.

I love the bonds they build with Evanthia. The connections they all have together and the beautiful little found family that they make.

The spice was fantastic and plenty as usual. I'm still thinking about Chapter 39. 🫠 That was very unexpected but completely welcome. I wouldn't be mad if we got a side novella with a repeat performance 👀👀👀

There was actually quite a bit of plot as the storyline comes to a close. A few little twists, some light action, lots of past character cameos that really pulled everything together, and of course some much needed retribution. It was a fitting end for such a great series.

Absolutely loved this epic finale of this monster why choose romance series!

Evanthia is such a strong and resilient heroine. Her healing journey is so emotional and beautiful to read. I love how her men all support her as she heals.

The final battle is epic, and I love how all the different groups came together to take down the big bad.

This is a fantastic ending to the series, with great closure, but still leaves the universe open for more stories.

What I had originally enjoyed about this series were the characters and the relationships. I loved the special connection the FL had with each of her gentlemen and also the respect and understanding between the men. However, in this novel, I wasn't invested in the characters or the relationships. I thought some of characters were underdeveloped. I also thought the relationship between the men were lacking. Honestly, if it wasn't for Lazlo, I don't think the other men would have come to an agreement and shared Evanthia's affection. As for the story, lots of plot holes, but do people really read this for the plot? Birsha does get what he deserved even though it came about in a very anti-climax way.

I am sad that I didn't enjoy this book as much as the other two. For some reason the dynamic just didn't work for me, but it was still nice to see my favorite characters from the previous novels.
