EXCERPT: She is fighting the drug, resisting it but at the same time letting go. She can't be awake any more. How many hours has it been? Not hours, days and days. She's not allowed to sleep or he will come for her child.

'Your fault,' he whispers outside her window at night. 'Your fault and you don't deserve her. Your fault and I will take everything.'

ABOUT 'HIS OTHER WIFE': She has my husband. She has my child. She has my life.

I never thought I would end up here. Alone, in a cold one-bedroom apartment, only seeing my precious daughter once a week.

Another woman is living the life that was once mine. I wish I was still married to my ex-husband, the love of my life. I dream of tucking my five-year-old child into her ballerina bed sheets every night. I miss living in a beautiful house, the perfect family home, with a winding staircase and a sprawling garden.

I’d do anything to be with my family again. To start over and prove to them that I’ve changed, that I won’t lose control like before.

But when I get my second chance, the vicious messages come. The noises at night. The feeling of being watched. It’s happening all over again. I know I’m not going mad, but no one will believe me. I don’t know if I even believe myself.

All I wanted was my life back. But now my life is under threat – and my darling little girl is in danger…

MY THOUGHTS: What is it at the moment with authors and ridiculously OTT endings? This is the second book in a row that I have read where an overly dramatic ending has killed most of the the pleasure I took in the read.

Other than the ending, His Other Wife has a lot going for it. Sarah has fallen victim to a grief induced psychosis and is admitted to a psychiatric clinic, surrendering the care of their daughter Emily to her ex-husband Gideon his new fiance, Charlotte. Gideon is a complex character. He is kind, and obviously still in love with Sarah, but is easily manipulated by Charlotte. She sees in Gideon the embodiment of everything she has ever wanted, plus she gets a readymade daughter in Emily whom she adores.

Sarah, when she is released, is grateful for Gideon's support and envisages a happy future where they co-parent in harmony. She wants to make friends with Charlotte and make everything easy for Emily. It's at this point that Trope ratchets up the tension. I was fearful for Sarah. Was she again falling prey to the psychosis, or was there something far more sinister going on? I thought I knew. And I was kind of right, but Trope had a few surprises in store for me, and there was so much more to the situation than I had imagined.

This was a great read, until it wasn't.

Gideon takes a terrifying call from his five-year-old daughter Emily who says the whispering man is back and that she and her mother Sarah are hiding in a cupboard. Sarah has suffered some mental health issues but Gideon feels she has been improving and he is now wracked with guilt that he didn’t detect the signs of deterioration. Gideon is recently engaged to Charlotte who is eagerly anticipating stepping into a mother role. Gideon Sarah and Charlotte narrate.

The book starts really strongly with a heartbreaking beginning, you feel Sarah‘s torment but equally her love and overwhelming desire to protect Emily and keep her safe. Charlottes personality is conveyed well though she is very hard to like as the green eyed monster rears its ugly head. Sarah‘s point of view is done well, this is possibly the strongest narrative and you feel empathy for her and the situation she finds herself in. Gideon is a good caring man caught between a rock and a very hard place .

The dynamics between the menage are done well with tension building between Gideon and Charlotte and the growing confusion of Sarah.

However, the wheels come off for me as it moves towards the conclusion especially as I guess one quite substantial part. I find I don’t entirely buy into the ending which doesn’t make my jaw drop as others other books by Nicole Trope do .

Overall, it’s an easy and entertaining read, it does have some exceptionally good moments but in my opinion it’s not one of the authors best books..

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Nicole Trope is a master of the domestic suspense genre. This book starts off with a bang!

Gideon is summoned, yet again, this time by his 5 year old daughter to save her and her mother, Sarah, Gideon’s former wife, from the Whispering Man. Sarah is almost delirious with lack of sleep. She has to protect her daughter, Emily, from the Whispering Man who plagues her nights, invading her head with thoughts about how everything is her fault. She doesn’t dare fall asleep in case the Whispering Man comes for Emily. Sarah had a late miscarriage 3 years ago and lost both her parents within a few months of that. The grief affected her very badly and even a string of different therapists couldn’t help. She became depressed and angry and finally drove Gideon away, kicked him out of his home. But of course that didn’t help either.

This time Gideon has had enough, he calls the paramedics and has her section for 72 hours with a view to placing her in a lovely private clinic where she can get the help she needs. He takes Emily to live with him and his fiancé, the very competent Charlotte. Their home is haven of peace and happiness and the couple have a small, private wedding while Sarah is at the clinic. Charlotte loves the delightful little Emily and enjoys mothering her.

After three months Sarah is ready to come home and resume being a mother to Emily. Gideon wants to phase this in slowly with supervised visits and sleepovers for one night at a time before they commence the long term shared custody of two weeks each. He wants to be sure that Sarah is truly well and can cope. Of course it is not long before the wheels start falling off again. Sarah constantly relies on Gideon for help and support and Charlotte is losing patience. Charlotte has a very close relationship with her mother on whom she relies for advice. Can you see the danger signals yet?

The characters are so well developed it feels like you are stepping into their lives. They feel real and you share the frustrations of both Sarah and Charlotte and you feel how torn Gideon feels as he is forced to chose between them. There is a sense of creeping menace. You start to become aware that things are not as they seem, and boy is that borne out by a shocker of an ending! This was another excellent offering by this talented Australian author. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Spine tingling psychological thriller

I loved HIS OTHER WIFE, Nicole Trope’s latest psychological thriller. Sarah and Gideon have gotten a divorce and Gideon now has full custody of their young daughter Emily. Because of her hallucinations and mental breakdown that she suffered after the miscarriage of their second child, Sarah has been committed to a stay in a mental institution. For the past year, Gideon has been seeing Charlotte, and their relationship is very serious, yet Gideon has set ground rules. He doesn’t want any more children. And Sarah will always be a part of their lives because she is Emily’s mother.

The way this story slowly unfolds was very well done. You don’t quite know who to trust, and the use of unreliable narrators was great. I am a big fan of Nicole Trope’s books for the way she always writes really twisted situations and characters that are very interesting and this book did not disappoint!

The premise was good. A man, an ex wife, a new wife and a battle over a child which turns bad. The first part of the book was good as the scene was set and each participant had their point of view expressed.

Sadly there was far too much introspection and navel gazing and the story became predictable and repetitive. All the adult characters were unpleasant and weak and there were moments when I just wanted it to be over.

The ending was actually unexpected and tense but it was also rather over the top and did not leave me feeling satisfied with the book. A shame but I can only give it three stars.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This is a fast paced page turner I couldn’t put down. It kept me guessing until the very end. My thoughts on who was the victim and who was the villain also changed as this character driven thriller unfolded. “ Betrayal changes something in you, it forever alters how you look at the world, your perceptions.” Betrayal and lies motivate the characters in this entertaining, suspenseful and intriguing psychological thriller. “ It seems real enough, but maybe it’s just a façade. People lie all the time.” Who knows who is lying and who is telling the truth? Believing the wrong person may be deadly. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Sarah lost her baby mid pregnancy, the grief hit her hard. Gideon could see how his beloved wife had shattered, but nothing he did would help Sarah. Five-year-old Emily was the only thing keeping Sarah going, but gradually she was slipping away from him, until she threw him out of the house, wanting a divorce. Sarah had counselling but after a few weeks she gave up, only to try again with a new person. And when the ‘whispering man’ kept Sarah awake at night, she was terrified. It was when Emily rang Daddy to come to their house, as she and Mummy were in the cupboard, frightened of the whispering man, that Gideon finally had Sarah committed.

Gideon’s relationship with Charlotte had been a rapid one with Charlotte encouraging him all the way to their wedding. Charlotte loved Emily as her own and did everything to keep both Gideon and Emily happy. But when Sarah eventually came home, recovered and ready to continue her life, Charlotte’s life started to fall apart. But much worse was to come for Sarah as well as Gideon, Charlotte and Emily…

His Other Wife by Aussie author Nicole Trope was an intriguing psychological thriller which was unfortunately fairly predictable. I loved Emily – she was an absolute sweetheart. There were plenty of twists in this novel as well as danger on every level, but mostly I felt for Emily, her confusion at her young age was sad. Recommended.

Sarah can’t sleep, when she’s sleeping there is a man who whispers to her "YOUR FAULT", "YOU DON’T DESERVE HER" or "I WILL TAKE EVERYTHING"... Even the pills are not helping. She’s confused but she needs to be sane for her daughter. She needs her. She’s in danger or is she…?!

Told in multiple POV, 3rd person, it can be read as a standalone. I totally enjoyed the writing and the story but I should say it was predictable. I guessed most of the twists but still liked it. I liked the tension between the characters. I liked Sarah, she tried to be strong for her daughter. Overall, I had a good time reading it and hope you enjoy it as well!

While reading the summary for this book I thought it might have been Jane Eyre-inspired but if anything, it's more like Rebecca. Charlotte is a forty-year-old interior decorator who has just married a man named Gideon, who has a young daughter, named Emily. For a woman who has always wanted a family, this feels like a dream come true. There's just one catch: Gideon's first wife, Sarah, is still in the picture. Sarah, his first love, and mother to his child. Sarah, who was the perfect wife... until she started hearing voices and being unable to sleep.

Sarah has only just recently gotten out of a psychiatric facility and everyone has agreed that she should still be a part of Emily's life. But Charlotte is resentful of this. She feels like Sarah is trying to steal her husband away and thinks it would be a lot better if Sarah went back to the hospital. Or better yet... if she died. Leaving her alone with Emily and Gideon forever. When Sarah begins slipping again, Charlotte is exhilarated. But what if... Sarah's not imagining her fears?

Or worse: what if she IS?

I don't read a lot of domestic suspense because a lot of it revolves around motherhood and that is something that just isn't very interesting to me. Case in point: Charlotte is close to my age, but she can think of nothing but babies and being the perfect mother and biological clocks. Women in these books tend to define themselves by nothing but motherhood and children, and that's fine, but that's not who I am or even something I'm really interested in, so I tend to avoid books like these as a matter of fact. But the psychological element really roped me in, and so did the tension between the two wives. I do feel like this was probably inspired by REBECCA, but whatever you think is happening, it probably isn't what you think. I was surprised by the ending. I think it worked.

But oh my God, all of these characters were awful. The little girl, Emily, was sweet, and I felt bad and worried about Sarah. But Gideon, Charlotte, and her mother? Hate, hate, hate, loathe entirely. And there were a bunch of other total trash people in this book as well, who I'm not going to talk about because spoilers. This is not one of those thrillers where you read the book rooting for or relating with the protagonists involved. I basically hate-read my way to the end, grimly demanding justice. This was honestly such a stressful, nail-biting experience. But did it keep me hooked? Also yes.

Trashy popcorn thriller lovers, unite and read this book! It’s not mind-blowing, it’s not brilliant, it’s not even very thoughtful, but it is entertaining.

This book is about three people: Gideon, his ex-wife, Sarah, and his new wife, Charlotte. Gideon and Sarah split up when she was having mental health issues, and then he met Charlotte - the exact opposite of his ex. They married, and the three began coparenting Gideon and Sarah’s daughter, Emily.

The problem is, one of these people is crazy. Totally batshit crazy. The book keeps you wondering who as it goes along, written from the viewpoints of these three. Sarah has brutal insomnia, and has hallucinations of a “whispering man” who is out to get her. Charlotte is a perfectionist, a woman who can’t stand not having control over everything in her life. Gideon … well, he may still be in love with Sarah. This triangle has a lot of drama.

This was a super fast read, as it was very simple. There are lots of twists and turns, but they were pretty predictable. Overall, I was entertained by this book, but I was at times rolling my eyes at how unrealistic the whole story was. This drops my rating from four stars to three. I think I’m an outlier with that rating, but I just didn’t find this book to be anything special. If you’re looking for a fun, mindless read, this is your book though!

This is a quick and twisty read filled with unreliable narrators. The story is told from 3 POVs- Sarah, who was recently institutionalized for mental illness, her ex-husband, Gideon, and Gideon’s new wife, Charlotte. All are fighting for the safety and happiness of Sarah and Gideon’s daughter Emily.

It was difficult to tell who was telling the truth as Sarah grapples with strange things happening that cause her and her loved ones to think she may not be as healthy as she is letting on. Charlotte seems to have an unhealthy obsession with Emily, but is she just looking out for her? And poor Gideon is stuck in a love triangle as he tries to support both the women in his life.

I had an inkling of what might really be going on but I was only partly right, as the full story was even twistier than I had anticipated, with a few big surprises. The story moves at a fast pace the entire way through and caused me to change my mind a few times as to what was really happening. The ending did leave a few unanswered questions, which is not my preference, but didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story.

Overall this was a quick and fun read and I’d recommend it to those who enjoy psychological thrillers. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I miss living in a beautiful house, the perfect family home. I'd do anything to be with my family again. To start over and prove to them that I've changed, that I won't loose my control like before.

Gideon is now married to Charlotte, who is helping him to care for his daughter, Emily. Charlotte would love to be Emily's mum, she adores the little girl. His ex-wife, Sarah, has been having psychological problems, she's been in a psychiatric hospital for months and now she's ready to live on her own again.

The further you get into this book, the more intriguing it gets. Charlotte is the jealous type and hates how Gideon still takes care of his ex-wife. And there begins the emotionally fraught relationships between the three adults. I didn't like or care for any of the characters. The plotline was a bit creepy and twist filled. It's told from the three main characters perspectives. The ending was a bit of a surprise.

As readers enter His Other Wife by Nicole Trope they will think about and feel the story. Based on the common issues of divorce and child custody, this deeply emotional story deals with mental illness and betrayal.

Synopsis:
Sarah and Gideon have divorced and amicably share custody of their young daughter Emily. Gideon now has a second wife named Charlotte but remains committed to his support of Sarah's role as Emily's mother. After experiencing several traumatic events Sarah develops psychosis. She receives three months of treatment at an inpatient facility and makes incredible progress. Sarah feels ready to resume visits with her beloved daughter, but Charlotte has fully embraced the role of stepmother and does not believe Sarah will provide top-notch care for Emily. Charlotte does not want Sarah back into their lives.

His Other Wife by Nicole Trope is difficult to put down once you begin reading it. Family conflict involving children tears my heart out. There are books that you read one day and then forget the next, but I'll remember His Other Wife for a long time. (4.25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫)

High 4 stars. There was a lot going on in this story and I fell right into the plot. It was suspenseful with a twist. I was moved by Sarah and her struggles with mental illness. The story worked well for me and because I could relate. The child in the story had me on the edge of my seat. Very entertaining and I highly recommend.

Can little Emily have more than one mother? For that matter, can Gideon have more than one wife? Now divorced from Sarah, at her urging, Gideon eventually marries his girlfriend Charlotte. The couple provide a stable home for young Emily all while Sarah deals with a psychiatric break that ends up with her hospitalized for a few months. What happened that Sarah had to go into the hospital? Multiple phone calls from either Sarah or Emily to Gideon kept him on his toes as Sarah kept referring to someone at the whisper man. Terrified in her own home, eventually Sarah had a complete break.

Sarah is home now and she and Gideon must navigate shared custody of Emily, all while Charlotte start to show to signs of jealousy over any attention that Gideon is not giving her. The question that needs answering is whether or not Sarah is stable enough to care for Emily, all while Charlotte’s behavior begins to crack around the seams.

In this fast-paced novel by Nicole Trope, the tension ratchets up page after page. Whether or not Sarah’s insomnia and depression was able to be managed all while Emily‘s well-being might seem like the thread that holds this book together. However, there are more dynamics at play in this compelling read. This dramatic book was impossible to put down and came to a shocking yet satisfying conclusion.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Sarah and Gideon are now divorced and he has moved on and married Charlotte. Sarah has suffered a breakdown and Gideon is now worried about her and their young daughter, Emily. Gideon arranges a stay at a clinic to help Sarah, but his new wife is very jealous of all the attention Sarah is getting from Gideon. Charlotte wants Gideon all to herself! I will not say anything else, other than to read this book!!! It was a twisty tale. As always, it was another winner from Nicole Trope. I don't know how she keeps coming up with these great stories, but I am a huge fan!!

A man, ex-wife and a new wife all have to get among for the sake of 5 year old, Emily. I wasn’t sure where this was headed but it’s a doozy. I’m not sure who I hated worse - the ex-wife or the new wife. They both drove me crazy and I didn’t believe either one! The ending had a great twist that I did not see coming!!

“Can you come and help us please, Daddy? Mummy says the whispering man is back and she’s scared.”

Remember Sports Day every June when you were in elementary school? I’ll bet you played tug-of-war! Aussie author, Nicole Trope has set the stage for a winner takes all game of tug-of-war between her characters. On one end of the rope is Sarah, Gideon’s former wife and on the opposing team, at the other end of the rope, is Charlotte, Gideon’s present fiancee. Both have a tight grasp of the rope, their feet firmly planted on the ground and have absolutely no intention of walking away a loser.

Trope, an auto-read author for me, skillfully keeps readers engaged and guessing until she unveils her signature twist towards the end of the story. From the first sentence, she takes readers on a journey with her characters as they struggle to protect themselves and their loved ones. She brings them to the point where they ponder what they’d do in the same situation before she reveals why her characters behave the way they do. Readers will be wrapped up in the manipulation, fear and exasperating antics in this riveting read as each wife struggles for control of Gideon’s attention.

Trope deftly explores the motives that drive people and the masks they wear as they take steps to protect loved ones. She highlights anxiety, loss, manipulation and divorce.

This fantastic psychological thriller needs to be on your reading list this summer!

Gideon takes a terrifying call from his five year old daughter Emily, who says the whispering man is back and that she and her mother Sarah are hiding in a cupboard. Gideon had hoped Sarah's mental health had improved and now he feels guilty as he never saw any signs of her deterioration.

Sarah has spent three months in a mental health facility and now she is thrilled to be home.

She is determined to stay healthy and to focus on her daughter, but she soon starts to hear the dreaded whispering at night. Meanwhile her husband's new wife is making her question her sanity.

A great read that had me on the edge of my sofa biting my nails in this gripping twist packed psychological thriller.

His Other Wife - Nicole Trope

4🌟

I loved Nicole's last book 'The Family Across the Street' so I was so excited to get approved an ARC of her latest book and couldn't wait to get stuck in.

Thanks a million to Netgalley, bookouture and the author, Nicole Trope for the opportunity to read this one in exchange for an honest review.

It did not disappoint.

A grippy thriller and I was hooked from the very first page.

I read it in one sitting as I just couldn't put it down - I'd tell myself just one more chapter but who was I kidding, there was no way I could stop myself reading until I finished it.

The characters are so well developed and you really felt like you were stepping into their lives. It's obvious throughout that things are not as they seem but I honestly had no clue how it was going to go and the ending was a total shocker to me.

This was a super fast, easy read, with short quick chapters and one I would defo recommend if you're into the thriller genre and enjoy a twisty read full of suspense and family drama.

Nicole Trope just doesn't disappoint.

A hugely enjoyable read. I'll be waiting patiently for her next one. Definitely an author to look out for.

I was excited to read, His Other Wife, I have been wanting to try one of Nicole Trope’s books for awhile, the synopses are always interesting. When I saw, His Other Wife, was only 285 pages I was excited for a quick read and a fun adventure….but it took me two weeks to get through. It appears I have an unpopular opinion with giving, Nicole Trope’s latest book, 3.5 stars. I was just never fully invested in any of the characters. I feel as though I surmised the ending from the start and just began building evidence to justify my assumption one chapter at a time. I don’t want to give anything away so I won’t go further into the give always for me. I would be definitely give this author another go!

Wow! This is a finely-tuned psychological suspense-thriller, skilfully using an alternating triple perspective narrative to build suspense and keep the reader guessing, right up to the shocking conclusion.

This is, hands down, one of the best thrillers I have read this year. Nicole Trope just keeps getting better and better with each new book.

Even two years after his divorce, Gideon is unable to stop himself from running to his ex-wife Sarah, everytime she needs help, if only for their daughter Emily's sake. Sarah's deteriorating mental health worries him no end and he refuses to put Emily in danger. Charlotte had given up hope of finding love or becoming a mother when Gideon and Emily came into her life and now she can't imagine a world without them. But Sarah's looming presence in their family life makes her apprehensive. Sarah regrets having divorced Gideon and breaking up their family. Now Emily is all that she has and she refuses to give her up without a fight.

From the very first chapter, the narrative resounds with a sense of foreboding. The author's writing deserves special mention here as she instils dread and discomfort on behalf of the characters as she plies on the suspense. Clues are generously sprinkled throughout the narrative that by about halfway in, you get an inkling of what exactly is happening. And yet you can't help that heart-in-your-mouth feeling as the climax unveils.

The plot revealed through the POVs of the three main characters - Gideon, Sarah and Charlotte - touches upon matters of mental health issues, the mindset of children from broken families, the depths of a mother's love, and about yearning for lost love. The author skillfully wields emotion as she does intrigue through her narrative, making Sarah's grief, Charlotte's insecurity and Gideon's moral dilemma all the more palpable.

Overall, totally addictive and utterly unputdownable. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the story of Gideon, his ex wife Sarah the mother of his daughter Emily and his new wife Charlotte. Sarah has insomnia, she believes sleep will lead to the death of a loved one so forces herself to stay awake. This leads to the appearance of “the whispering man”.

The prologue grabs your attention and then hurtles back four months previously where the author nearly veers into horror territory with five year old Emily phoning her dad in the middle of the night terrified. With Gideon finally realising Sarah’s mental health has been declining he makes the decision to have her admitted after five different therapists have seemingly failed.

Three people and one of them is crazy but as with all of Nicole’s books nothing and no one is ever quite as it seems.

Insomnia is not something I have much knowledge of as I am very fortunate in that I sleep like the dead. However the torment that Sarah goes through is so well written that you really feel for her even while you are questioning her sanity.

Charlotte I also felt for as it’s not easy being a step parent especially when the mother has been away and is now back on the scene. However she quickly loses patience with Sarah’s demands of Gideon and it seems her mask is slipping.

With Gideon stuck in the middle the red flags swoop you back to remembering the prologue.

I loved the authors last book The family across the street so I knew that would be a hard act to follow but that I would be in for a great read regardless.

So suspend your belief, leave your expectations at the door and enjoy this book for the twisty thriller it is!

Sarah has experienced one tragedy after another, which sent her into a deep depression and psychosis. She thinks she hears the whispering man calling to her, telling her it's all her fault, scratching on her window at night, keeping her awake.
Once she returns from her stay at the hospital, Sarah is ready to get her life back on track and get her daughter back.
Her ex-husband has moved on and married Charlotte, who has been Emily's caregiver for the last several months. She is not happy about Sarah's return and having to share Gideon and Emily again.
She wants Sarah to go away for good.
This book was well written and kept me guessing.

His Other Wife started off strong and never let up! This was full of suspense and drama.

Gideon and Charlotte are newly engaged. You can tell that she’s infiltrated herself into his and his daughter Emily’s lives quickly and in any way possible. She has a steady hand and is capable of steering the ship and they need that after Emily’s mother Sarah’s breakdown.

I assumed heading into this that Sarah was going to be the villain, coming back for her family, but it’s hard to pin down who the baddie is for a while. They’re complex and flawed characters who are mostly trying their best but also throwing a little trickery in here and there..

Sarah is suffering from mental issues and hallucinating from her refusal to sleep. She feels intense guilt and shame for things beyond her control. It finally reaches its peak one night when Emily calls her father from the cupboard where they’re hiding from an imaginary threat. Sarah is sent to inpatient care and Emily is in the caring hands of Gideon and Charlotte, who’s grown very attached to Emily, having no child of her own. Charlotte makes sure she has his hand in marriage before Sarah can return.

Neither women are particularly happy the other is around. If a bus tragically hit one, the other would probably be okay with it but they’re trying to get along for the sake of the family. Upon Sarah’s return, Charlotte resents the care and time Sarah receives from Gideon. Sarah also starts to hear things again. Are they real or have her inner demons caught up to her?

Who’s in danger here? Sarah or Charlotte? They’re not very happy to be sister wives, that’s for sure, but would one hurt the other? How far would they go to secure the future they want? It gets messy and surprises are around every corner!

This was great and the perfect length to be a quick summer read. There were a lot of heavy topics handled in this and I think it was handled appropriately. Definitely looking forward to more from this author.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!

“𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝. 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝. 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.”

After Sarah suffered a breakdown after the loss of a pregnancy, she and her husband Gideon divorced at her insistence. Although he still loves Sarah, Gideon soon remarries another woman, Charlotte. The reader is instantly sucked in by the interesting family dynamic; every time Sarah calls, Gideon comes running. Charlotte feels like Sarah is trying to get Gideon back and is determined to limit her presence in their lives. At the heart of the family dynamic is Emily, Sarah and Gideon's young daughter. Charlotte relishes her role as stepmother and worries that Sarah is too unbalanced to care for her.

Sarah suffers from delusions brought on by "the whispering man," a nameless, faceless entity she hears each night when she tries to sleep. She hears fingernails at her window and the endless whispers blaming her for losing her child. After a brief stay in an institution, Sarah seems better...but when she realizes that things aren't happening the way she recalls, she begins questioning her own sanity. This was a dynamic, twisty thriller that had some pretty shocking twists. I'll definitely be reading more books from this author. While it wasn't even remotely close to being a horror book, I still had a nightmare about "the whispering man". Highly recommended! Publishes June 21, 2022. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my e-ARC.

Setting: Sydney, NSW, Australia; modern day.
Interior designer Charlotte has recently married divorce attorney Gideon, who himself has recently been divorced from his former wife Sarah. Gideon and Sarah have a young daughter, Emily, but Sarah was unable to cope with a miscarriage and then, soon afterwards, the deaths of both her parents a short time apart. Having forced Gideon to leave, Sarah then went on a downward spiral and, despite seeing several therapists, has been unable to come to terms with her loss. Even once Charlotte and Gideon are married, Sarah still calls Gideon when she is at her lowest and he usually responds to her calls, primarily because she is Emily's mother. But when Sarah starts getting hallucinations of a 'whispering man' who threatens her, Gideon fears that Emily may be at risk and arranges for Sarah to be sectioned. Meanwhile, Charlotte is getting increasingly disenchanted with Sarah and her demands on Gideon - she loves Emily, even though she is not her own daughter, and thinks Sarah is a bad mother, a view that she passes on to her mother, Carol....
As the story progresses, told respectively by Charlotte, Gideon and Sarah, several stunning revelations are made and there are some shocking twists and turns, right up to the climax of the tale. This was another great novel from Nicole Trope - the storylines and characters were excellent although the book didn't have much of an 'Aussie vibe' for me and could have been set anywhere, apart from the very occasional mention of the view of Sydney! Nonetheless, the story was gripping and I found it very hard to put down - 9/10.

The tag line on the cover – “She has my husband. She has my child. She has my life.” – sets the stage for a taut, twisty thriller about two women determined to hang on to the love of one little girl and her daddy. After Sarah and Gideon suffered a miscarriage and subsequently divorced, Sarah had a mental breakdown and spent three months in a psychiatric hospital. While Sarah is away, Gideon marries his girlfriend Charlotte, and they are providing a loving and stable home to five-year-old Emily. But now Sarah’s back, ready to reclaim her rightful spot as Emily’s mother, and mentally stronger. Or is she? Strange things keep happening, and maybe Sarah isn’t as recovered as she thought she was. Is Emily safe with her?

Nicole Trope is a master of the twisty, turny, make-you-wonder-what’s-real thriller! Is the whisper man real? Is Sarah really better? Who has Emily’s best interests at heart? This novel kept me guessing the entire time about the characters’ motives, who was telling the truth, and who was manipulating whom. The faster the action and intensity developed, the faster I kept turning the pages!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.
