The Pussy Detective. A title like this elicits a response; an invite to engage right off the bat. For some, it’s off-putting because of the p-word. Others see the title and the amazing retro-inspired artwork and pull the trigger. Some people think it’s a joke or a parody.

“Wait, this book is about women who have lost their pussy and some detective helps them find it?”

That’s exactly right.

And initial reactions are fine. It’s what readers do with those knee-jerk responses that I want to address. Just to set early expectations, this is not a critical review of The Pussy Detective but more of my own, personal reading experience as part of my entire journey to be a curator of quality fiction that other readers can rely on to help them navigate through new book releases.

I have learned that I approach books with a set of built-in biases that either help or hinder my ability to find books I will enjoy. Book cover design is probably the biggest influence followed by a plethora of other contributing factors like genre, synopsis, and word-of-mouth buzz. In the case of The Pussy Detective, for me, it was the publisher CLASH Books.

I’m a huge CLASH fan and I trust the owners, Leza Cantoral and Christoph Paul, to publish quality, inspired, and fresh fiction. Their mission statement reads,

To publish awesome and engaging books that transcend labels and break boundaries. We put the lit in literary.
That’s a great mission, right? I’m sure every reader looks at this pledge and gets excited about all the potential for greatness.

However.

It’s transactional.

CLASH cannot publish “engaging books” without readers willing to engage.

They can’t “transcend labels” if readers use labels to qualify books.

They can’t “break boundaries” if readers fight to uphold them.

So.

The Pussy Detective by DuVay Knox is an experience waiting to be had and readers just need to show up and be willing to have that experience.

Knox is writing with his own lexicon. As an example, I have pulled a quote from an interview about this book that was published at LitReactor

Mah language is actually how I speek. Imma southern nigga and dats how we role werds. I aint neva been to koncerned bout wut literature purists say bout how u SHOOD write. I kan doo dat and have DONE dat actually and won JOBS/CONTESTS n shit. Butt dat type-a-KINGS ENGLISH writing to mee is like COOKING wit No SEASONING. And Im frum New Orleans so mah ass BETTA kno how 2 COOK/if nuthing else!! Writing is like making GUMBO. U gotta SEASON dat shit jes rite. True not errybody will like wut U cook–butt I aint afta dem doe no way.
The Pussy Detective isn’t just some bullshit. It’s not a parody or “dark erotica.” Those are labels and labels come with expectations formed from biases, preferences, and assumptions.

It absolutely doesn’t have to be anyone’s cup of tea but on the other hand, it doesn’t owe anybody anything. This is the kind of art that exists because people believe in its importance and readers can agree or disagree but reading it with an open mind is the requirement in order to communicate a valid opinion on the matter. This reader’s opinion is that I enjoyed my experience in Reverend Daddy Hoodoo’s world. I believe DuVay Knox is an important voice that deserves to be heard and I hope he gets to publish a series of Pussy Detective novels. I think Knox has a lot of stories to tell and only he can tell them so I’m glad the industry is giving him the space and the opportunity to do that because there is an audience ready to enjoy them.

Ladies, do you feel as if an essential part of your being has deserted you? Are you feeling empty and depressed? If you are smart, you'll have Reverend Daddy Hoodoo's digits available. He will find what is missing, and discover how it got lost. He is a holistic hoodoo priest. But the real hero of this sensual and smart work of words is author Duvay Knox. His narrative and dialogue flow with the perfect frequency, dialed in just right. I enjoyed this sharp-witted and percipient use of language, and can only hope that we will meet up with Reverend Daddy Hoodoo and Madame X again.

I don’t make a lot of predictions or forecasts or whatever about writers/authors. But here’s one you can take to the bank; in thirty years time, forty, fifty, people will still be reading Duvay Knox.
The Pussy Detective isn’t going to be everyone’s book of the month that’s for sure. The majority of people who only read ‘commercial fiction’ simply don’t get it.
I’ve got a feeling that The Pussy Detective will become a cult classic in similar vein as Charles Bukowski’s Women.
This novel is something else entirely.
A genre in and of itself.
It’s poetry. It’s stream of conscious fiction at its most extreme. It’s Machiavelli’s Handbook to relationships and sex. It’s Ice-Berg Slim meets Henry Miller.
Each and every page brought forth an emotional and physical reaction from me and what better compliment is there for any writer?

Real icons don’t follow trends.
They make them.
Knox has invented his own style that’s for sure.

Highly recommended but not for the easily offended

Full of profound metaphysical truths, beautiful women, and fun with the English language in a way few authors but Duvay dare to accomplish. Let's all pray this will become a series a la Dashiell Hammett's Thin Man.

Loved the style. Just dripping with cool and charm.

Story felt a bit threadbare though. Like 95% Pussy, 5% Detective. Not really a lot of tension or stakes. Mostly just a dope tone-piece with some really clever wordplay and moments of real wisdom.

Had a hard time separating some of the bits that felt like humorous/provocative tongue-in-cheek character-work from parts that felt like character-as-author's-mouthpiece moralizing, but I think that kind of thing will probably clear up as I read more of Duvay's future works and catch more of his vibe, which I'm super excited to do.

DuVay Knox is changing the game! His previous work, The Soul Collector, blew me away with its revolutionary style, and he's done it again with his blaxploitation pulp thriller, The Pussy Detective. Go ahead and allow yourself to believe that you'll be reading a lighthearted throwback to the days of Shaft, Superfly, and Cleopatra Jones, because you kinda will be. The lead character in this book is Reverend Daddy Hoodoo, and he operates an occult detective agency for the purpose of finding lost pussies. As you would expect, the scenes in this book deal explicitly with sex. But prepare to have your mind blown by the depth and heart of this story. This isn't some cheap porno rag. The book is about sexual relations, and it treats sex as both a religious experience and an expression of personal empowerment and fulfillment.

A woman named Abyssinia has been manipulated and sexually exploited by a dishonest sexual con man claiming to be a mystic, and, as a result, she has shut down emotionally and sexually. But Reverend Daddy Hoodoo is on the case, and, for him, this is a deadly serious matter.

Daddy Hoodoo righteously opposes the sexual exploitation of women, and he has a lot to say about that. Intimate relationships require mutual trust. And, as Daddy Hoodoo puts it, "The woman ALWAYS keeps The RIGHT to CHOOSE" The man needs to respect the woman's choice in all things related to intimacy: "I always keep asking up to the very last minute with muh Wimmons."

Written in southern country black dialect, this book is surprisingly suspenseful. Could this be the case that spoils Daddy Hoodoo's perfect record? Not if he can help it! And underneath it all are solid pearls of wisdom concerning life and death in Amerikkka.

A delight to read, this book gives the reader a lot to take away and think seriously about. Watch out for DuVay Knox--he not only rocks a mean fedora, but he's kind of a genius!

DuVay Knox's voice is the hottest, slickest, realest, most fearless voice I've read in some time. Endearingly raunchy like Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, sublimely mystical like Sun Ra, and quick with suckerpunch quips like Muhammad Ali. And believe me when I say raunchy. I mean it's more sexy than sleazy, but you gotta be ready & willing to ride deep with it. My only real beef, as it was with Knox's last book ("Soul Collector"), is that it's so short, barely a novella. In fact I kept thinking of it like a great pilot for a new TV series that I plan to watch every episode of. And that's cool if we're talking about The Pussy Detective purely as an artistic creation. As a product, though, I'd say its a little pricey. I mean I wouldn't want to pay close to $15 to watch one episode of TV. But it looks like there are new "episodes" of this series available free on Kindle, which I'm gonna go read, so I'm hopeful it'll all even out in the end.

Journey to the center of the Puss Eye. There’s not many books like The Pussy Detective. It’s blaxploitation bizarro fiction written in phonetic prose. It’s also sexually explicit and funny as fuck. It’s puss eye poetry.

I'm not an erotica reader. It's just not for me. But that's not what this book is. In the same way that Stranger Things has horror elements, and technically qualifies under the "horror" genre even though it's dripping with political, social, emotional, and spiritual meaning, "The Pussy Detective" uses erotic devices, but is so, so much more than what the label "erotica" implies.

In addition to the erotic devices he uses, Knox also grounds his language in a firmly Afro-centric culture. The first person narrative is peppered with observations about race, culture, politics, and history, which are so shocking to the mainstream audience that it becomes clear that Knox is attempting to upset his readers - on purpose. Just like Vonnegut shocks his readers with offhand references to alternate dimensions and anti-establishment reframing of social archetypes, Knox is daring his readers to transcend their preconvcieved notions of the world.

Snowflakes need not apply. White fragility and rigid religious and political sensibilities cannot withstand the firehose of alternate perspective in this book.

As a woman, I found this work sexually illuminating, inspiring, and empowering. Which is ironic, given the story's highly authoritative, masculine perspective. Through the power of his magnetic language, his artful storytelling, and the spiritual depth of his main character, Knox does the seemingly impossible: he creates a scenario where a powerful black man creates the ultimate safe, empowering, healing space for feminine sexuality in its most intimate and vulnerable state. It's a stunning accomplishment, and a revelation for both the spiritual and erotica literary genres.

For those seeking new paths and perspectives, those willing to shed the old and try on a new lens, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Prepare for your sensibilities to be shattered - and tenderly but firmly reconstructed.

This is everything I wanted it to be, Pulp Fiction that's in such a unique, funny, and insightful voice. So much of the feeling is in how earnestly it channels the voice of its speaker who is ridiculous, A detective that communes spiritually with the essence of a woman's pussy.

I hate to quote the back cover but it really does read as if James Joyce wrote a blaxploitation film, stream of conscious in a voice that feels familiar and that I have never heard before. I got this in the mail this morning and read it cover to cover by early afternoon, every sentence is offset as its own thought and I probably texted my friends about 50 or 60 of them with no context at all. I laughed through out and kept turning pages. I really hope this becomes serialised, like the old pulp novels because I would absolutely read more adventures of Reverend Daddy Hoodoo.

Can not recommend highly enough.

Duvay Knox delivers a unique spin on the mystery and detective story. With Reverend Daddy Hoodoo, you could make an argument that there’s similarities to Shaft, but I’d lean more towards this being unparalleled in both potential for future stories in a series of Hoodoo Cases, narrative, and content.
The Pussy Detective throws us into an already well-established man of the sheets and streets (a phrase inspired by Knox). He’s a respected detective within his respective community, is the man that can solve cases of missing or lost pussies, and gets the damn job done.

This book is covered in phonetics, and you may think that sounds like it could get pretty repetitive or irritating, but that ain’t the case here. With Pussy Detective, it’s full of gut-busting analogies, witty poetry, and if we only stick to content on the surface then you’ll surely be satisfied with the slick persona of Daddy Hoodoo and how he has a way with women.
He’s the black version of 007 (as I write this, I hope it changes eventually after Daniel Craig hangs up the bow tie and tux, there has yet to be a black or female James Bond).
If we go deeper than surface level content, this is a story of a man that helps women find themselves. A detective that is these hopeless women’s last resort. There’s no deeper message here about women needing a man (my take on it). Just simply put, a specialist with a heart to do good.

This book has a little bit for everyone: comedy, heart, action, love, poetry, and the supernatural. I’m excited to see how other readers take to The Pussy Detective, because if the cover that resembles a classic badass detective 70’s film and the title don’t promote intrigue, I hope this review does.

Duvay Knox's humour and depth of character are obvious in his second book. The stream of consciousness narrative centres the book around empathetic Reverend Daddy Hoodoo, a man of magic who conspires with his business partner Madame X to help women expel the damage done by other men. Mr. Knox has written a feminist manifesto that portrays a utopian future where it's possible to both respect and fuck the people you care about.

This is “The Pussy Detective.” That’s right. Private Dick on the Case. This review may be a little R rated. I’ll try not to go NC 17. But first big thanks to Clash Books for sending over a copy for my opinion. I’ve become a big fan of what they offer.

So, what exactly is this book? For starters, it’s my gateway into the world of DuVay Knox. Knox took quite a few chances with this, and I think those chances paid off.

You can look at this as an Erotic Mystery. The mystery involves women, who have lost their pussies. Now, we can go deeper and say it’s a metaphor for women who have possibly lost their sexual appetite, or ability to have a sexual relationship.

This is where our main character, Reverend Daddy Hoodoo comes in. He has this reputation of helping the women find their pussies. The Rev has a new case he has to “dive deep into” in order to help a young woman. Overall what we have is a world full of heartless gangsters, weird voodoo sex magic, women in distress, and a ritual, a saving ritual Daddy Hoodoo performs on his client that can be compared to a Sexual Exorcism. It’s almost like the calling of the higher Gods, coming to help save these women, or to get their pussies back.

Look, I will be true with you up front. You have to go into this with an open mind. It has the feel of the Blaxploitation movies of the 70’s, like Shaft, or Foxy Brown, Black Caesar, or even Dolemite, except it’s updated for today. Where those normally had action and violence, good guys and bad guys, The Pussy Detective is more about helping women in need, with special services.

The book is fast paced, with a flash fiction style presentation preventing any dull moments. Don’t go into it expecting the traditional storytelling you would normally get. Knox has taken all the writing rules, thrown them out the window, and has successfully created his own original style.

It’s naughty at times, I won’t lie to you. But with such a different feel. This is not the kind of naughtiness you may get from those 50 Shades of Grey books or some sort of fake vampire lust story. This is truly edgy at times, and frickin’ hilarious, whether that was intentional or not. This is a true “hold nothing back” presentation. DuVay Knox said, "Screw it, I’m not censoring anything at all."

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the meeting when this idea was being pitched to Clash. Big respect to Clash for taking a chance on this, and getting the writers voice out there for us.

Now don’t think this is all just crazy in your face smutty debauchery. Not at all. That’s just on the surface. Knox goes deep at times with some heartfelt truthful pieces of advice. These are words of wisdom. I point out a pretty cool one in my video (link at the top).

Have fun with this, because it appears DuVay Knox had a lot of fun writing it. And let's hope for a whole series. A definite must buy for 2022.

This is my first book that I’ve read by Duvay Knox and what an intriguing story it is. There is a certain rhythm to the text of this book, it’s almost musical in the structure of the phrases, a blend of poetry and prose and wow it’s a ton of fun. Part pulp, part erotic mystery, and in some ways reminiscent of the blaxploitation films and stories of the 1970s, I felt as if this title was a mixture of Shaft, Voodoo, Mystery, with the wisdom of the author’s experiences. This book is not like most titles I’ve ever read, it’s a really unique take on the “mystery” genre, but it’s not afraid to make use of language in service of the overall story. I’m really curious to see if Duvay Knox continues to tell stories of Daddy Hoodoo and if so, where he takes him in future titles.

I came into this book with expectations. It’s sold as a bawdy mystical blaxploitation detective story, and technically it is. With that framework I was prepared for high octane fun. Instead I was given a well meaning dude that is REALLY INTO HETERO SEX, and his morality of how people should be doing it, also what music is real music, and why you should only smoke a certain kind of weed.

The plot is almost non-existent. A femme-sans-fatale walks into his detective agency, and has a problem that is left mostly ambiguous until about 3/4ths of the way through the book. There are attempts to explain what is happening but mostly it comes down to the MC just knowing things, so nothing is revealed and when the author begins to elucidate he literally just says “knowwhatimean?”

So there is going to be some kind of ritual. He calls on some randos, gets the right weed, and then he has an exorcist of sorts. That’s the book.

There isn’t a mystery. There kind of is an antagonist, but he’s not present in the story in any way. Most of the time people just talk about wanting to have sex, or talk about how they are going to talk to each other in the future or how they had previously talked to each other in the past with virtually no relevant context. It’s kind of fascinating in its own way how repetitive it is without those rehashed bits facilitating any progression of plot.

I feel like this was written as an experiment in trying to create an anti-action story. Our MC will get in his car and just sit there thinking about having sex for 20 minutes and then realize that he’s inactive and will drive on a useless errand.

Because so much was ill defined, and the stakes confusing, even the magic stuff was boring.

I will say one thing that really annoyed me was his morality of how people should be having sex was cast as truth. He uses his fictional magic as evidence to reaffirm his preaching. Which if it is some world building thing I’d be ok with, but in this book it is written like he’s trying to teach the reader about how relationships should be through allegory. It’s clear that he means well, but when he literally says “he’s not judging” and then judges because his book proves it, my eyes couldn’t roll hard enough.

I was knocked over by Duvay Knox’s previous outing The Soul Collector. The voice, the style, the format were unlike anything I’d ever read. His next book, The Pussy Detective is a worthy successor. Again, it’s hard to overstate how much Duvay Knox is changing the definitions of “novel” and “fiction.” All the rules you thought you knew are out the window.

Now, I’m not going to suggest this book is for everyone. If the title and the cover leave you clutching your pearls, well, then, you should give it a miss. Likewise if the word “Motherfuckers” – one of my personal favorite words – bothers you. Otherwise, you should get into this Blaxploitation-style, pulp-homage, hard-boiled detective story featuring the Reverend Hoodoo Daddy, a professional who finds lost pussy. You know, an invaluable service. He’s a badass, but thoughtful combination of Richard Rountree’s looks, and the voice, smoothness, and game of Barry White.

This book is innovative, unique, and damn funny, too. It is not just gratuitous exploitation. It has depth and insight.

If you’re not on the Duvay Knox train, get on board, the train is leaving the station . . . motherfuckers.

The Pussy Detective by Duvay Knox
The Pussy Detective is one of those books that only comes around once in a lifetime, and it's apparent from the indepth metaphysical teachings in this story that Duvay Knox has been here for multiple. While a lot of females would protest that a man can't or shouldn't have the authority to speak on the true power that a female possesses between her legs, or what to do with it for that matter, this book dispels this notion.

The main character Reverend Daddy Hoodoo is a connoisseur of pussy. A lover of pussy. A PROTECTOR of the PUSS-EYE. In this book that reads like a movie I desperately want to watch, he lets us ride along on a case of a vagina in distress, under duress from something more problematic than a sexually transmitted disease: A SPIRITUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE.

The novel is perfectly paced; the prose leaving no space for boredom, only cackles and retrospection. Duvay Knox is a master at being the voice of true black pulp fiction. The dialogue, the characters, the erotic descriptions all sit authentically in the genre without being a trope.

My hope is that Duvay Knox will turn this into a series so we can all attend the church of Reverend Daddy Hoodoo.

Duvay has delivered another subversive, original story - this time treading into the territory of detective/noir and he's done it with characteristic page-turning style and humor. Aside from the sheer entertainment value of the novel, I was surprised by small bits of wisdom about relationships, health and sexuality the author was able to convey through a surface narrative that hearkens back to the Blaxploitation films of the 70s and 80s. It was an enjoyable read front to back and I hope it's the first of more stories to come.

Y'all ain't ready for this book! Seriously though, the story is like nothing you will ever read, trust me. It's weird, trippy, and funky in all the best ways. Plus, you'll learn some new and interesting terms you might not know you needed to know--some haven't left my brain yet and probably never will. Don't judge a book by its cover, or in this case, please do, and only proceed if you feel you're ready to cum along for the hellacious ride!

This book is a delight. If you haven’t read this already and want to know what it’s like, imagine a Melvin Van Peebles movie crossed with Fanny Hill and a classic detective movie, and you’d be close to the freewheeling fun and buoyant life of this novel.

Knox has a rich authorial voice and a confidence in the lived experience of his characters. You will HEAR him speak to you even when the story is over. The pacing is spot-on: the novel never drags, and it’s a great ride.

I tend to do most of my reading through audiobooks, but this is one you REALLY NEED to get in print. Knox’s puns are as much visual as verbal, and you will miss large chunks of the irony if you don’t see the words on the page. He’s having clear fun with language and puns as he takes the reader into his narrator’s quest.

Definitely worth it!

This is a novel that does not care about your expectations. It delights in burying them. Whatever rules of literature or thoughtless code you carry will be obliterated by the Reverend and the apotheosis of his work. This book is a portal generously slit for us into a world of high culture and singular identity. We are not worthy and we are Ill-equipped to absorb it’s esoteric messages. It is privileged access and we owe Mr. Knox a debt for his bold prose/voice and raw control over a highly intentional vision. I can’t wait to read more.

Okay, this just became my favorite read of the year so far! It is exactly what it sounds like, and I absolutely loved it. I loved the Southern talk of our narrator, Reverend Daddy Hoodoo. I loved his one-liners. And I loved that this felt like a feminist book the way he talks about women and how their body is a sacred place. The view that Karma is also a sexually transmitted disease. Clever and absolutely beautiful!

This was an easy read and it's certainly unique. Considering the content, there is a weirdly preachy attitude to casual sex (very specifically in regards to women having casual sex) that was a little off putting.
