Deep in Providence

Rate this book
"Haunting, intimate, and beautifully a magical debut novel from a writer to watch.” ―Emily M. Danforth, national bestselling and award-winning author of The Miseducation of Cameron Post

A spellbinding young adult fantasy debut following three best friends who turn to magic when they're haunted by a friend's death...and perhaps her spirit, combining the atmospheric thrills of The Hazel Wood with the nuanced realism of Erika L. Sanchez.

For best friends Miliani, Inez, Natalie and Jasmine, Providence, Rhode Island has a magic of its own. From the bodegas and late-night food trucks on Broad Street to The Hill that watches over the city, every corner of Providence glows with memories of them practicing spells, mixing up potions and doing séances with the help of the magic Miliani’s Filipino grandfather taught her.

But when Jasmine is killed by a drunk driver, the world they have always known is left haunted by grief...and Jasmine's lingering spirit. Determined to bring her back, the surviving friends band together, testing the limits of their magic and everything they know about life, death, and each other.

And as their plan to resurrect Jasmine grows darker and more demanding than they imagined, their separate lives begin to splinter the bonds they depend on, revealing buried secrets that threaten the people they care about most. Miliani, Inez and Natalie will have to rely on more than just their mystical abilities to find the light.

Thrilling and absorbing, Deep in Providence is a story of profound yearning, and what happens when three teen girls are finally given the power to go after what they want.

“Magic runs like a glittering thread through this densely woven tale of friendship, grief, and identity, and what begins as a backbeat of creeping dread deftly builds into a landscape of supernatural terrors. Neilson balances her page-turning fantasy narrative against the coming of age of a trio of bereaved best friends with grace, delicacy, and startling humanity.” ―Melissa Albert, New York Times -bestselling author of the Hazel Wood series and Our Crooked Hearts

Aw, Deep in Providence is raw. Haunting. Magical. Painful. Sad. Hopeful. Emotional. And above all, splendidly written!

Three voices, Miliana’s, Inez’s, and Natalie’s, each so distinctive, each full of grief, each dealing with different things after their best friend Jas died in a car accident caused by a drunken driver. Determined to get Jas back, the girls start using their mystical abilities.

I don’t really believe in higher powers and am pretty down-to-earth. But this book, I can’t even. Riss just pulled me into a world full of plants and spells and magic, and I had to surrender. To those three beautiful girls, to the descriptive writing, even to the magic I never believed in. I immediately compared Deep in Providence to The Honeys by Ryan La Sala (not out yet). Although both young adult books couldn’t be more different, they’re also incredibly alike. Both books are on the darker side with grief as the central theme, and in the meantime, the stories are about so many other important issues. Deep in Providence is about love, friendship, and family relationships, and next to grief it deals with topics like sexuality, drug addiction, immigration, religion, and teen pregnancy.

This book moved me in a way I didn’t expect in advance, and I highly recommend it! And Riss, I closed my eyes and imagined that your dedication was already in my early copy, and I loved it!

I received an ARC from Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Henry Holt and Co, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Colored Pages Tours and Henry Holt for providing a physical copy in exchange for an honest review and promotion. All opinions are my own.

This was incredible.

This book is about witchy powers, grief, and friendship. It follows three best friends after they lose their fourth member. Each of the girls is dealing with the loss differently, but then Milani convinces Natalie and Inez to raise Jasmine from the dead.

I still haven’t gathered all my thoughts from reading this one but I loved this book! I was invested in the characters from the get go and I loved all the magic and the way it worked.

Rep: Black-Filipina sapphic cis female MC, Latina cishet female MC, Black cishet female MC with anxiety, queer Black cis female side character, various Black, Latine and Filipine side characters.

CWs: Death, grief, mental illness (anxiety), pregnancy, abortion/miscarriage, blood, sexual content. When I tell you this is the contemporary fantasy I have been waiting for nearly all my life, I really and truly mean it.

Deep In Providence is a deeply evocative, atmospheric read that brings magic and faith to life in the most beautiful of ways. At its heart, this book is about three young girls on the cusp of great changes in their life, and having to deal with that alongside of grief and the ultimate lesson in mortality. The girls use a combination of the magic handed down to them from the generations that came before them and their own strength and tenacity to navigate issues like relationships, discrimination, guilt, drug use and abuse, and the overall complex and yet wonderful experience of growing up Brown and Black in Rhode Island.

Riss M. Neilson is a masterful writer, and I truly cannot wait to read more from her.

What a story! Deep in Providence (DIP) is indeed deeper in parables!
I don't know why I feel so emotional for Inez, Nataniel, and especially Miliani for the loss of Jasmine their friend whose sudden death brought the crew more grief than any of them could handle. Maybe because I'm human and because I know that indeed, there is more to death than being dead. Losing my mother at age 6 was one experience I do not wish on anyone, there was nothing I would have considered too dark to bring her back even though I have somehow like Miliani and the rest of the crew did, accept the fact that she is dead and dead for good there is nothing I could have done to change that fact, the best I could do is to continue to make her proud by being her good boy that I will continue to be.
Grief is certainly a tricky thing, tricky to the extent that it drove Jasmine's entire crew into practicing magic with the hope that it will bring Jasmine back to life not minding in whatever form even when they have none or little idea about what the repercussions of their decision could be.
I enjoy every second I devoted to reading it and I will recommend it to anyone willing to read between the lines.

A story about loss and life, family issues, friendship, and so many other important and relevant topics, Deep in Providence is a brilliant novel. It’s emotional and raw and magical, and its thought-provoking themes, dynamic characters, and unique plot made for an engrossing read. The story follows three teenage girls as they grieve the loss of their mutual friend, who died in a tragic car accident. Determined to bring Jasmine back, the girls work together using magic in the hopes that it’s not too late for her lingering spirit. But the more they work on their magic, the darker and more haunted life becomes.

The story is told from the perspectives of the three teens, Miliani, Inez, and Natalie, who lost their friend Jasmine. Each character is well developed, layered, and has a distinct voice, and I love that you get the thoughts and feelings of each girl. The story is not just about the girls dealing with the sudden and tragic death of their friend and fighting to bring her back using magic. It’s also about their personal journeys as they face complex, life-changing situations. Though Jasmine’s death and the plan to get her back are at the forefront of the story, Miliani, Inez, and Natalie each face so many other issues, including family pressures, drug addiction, relationship troubles, and more. Their stories are a fascinating and balanced blend of magic and realism, and I found each character’s journey unique and interesting.

The story takes place in Rhode Island, and as a native of the state, I loved reading about cities, attractions, and landmarks that I’ve frequented. Many of the places Miliani, Inez, and Natalie go to are less than a mile from my house, and I could easily picture these girls hanging out at the local park down the street from my house, heading to a beach a town over from me, and working on the same street where my dad grew up. Of course, if you aren’t a lifelong resident of Rhode Island like me, no need to worry. The writing, which pulls you right into the story, is engaging and immersive, and the author’s use of imagery, symbolism, and figurative language enhances the setting, mood, and tone.

The plot is as richly layered as the characters, and the way that it weaves real world issues into a magical and suspenseful story is masterful. I was equally invested in the real world issues, which include sex, sexuality, guilt, immigration issues, difficulties in relationships, drug use and abuse, and unexpected pregnancy, as I was in the magic. Both are fleshed out well and compelling.

The plot is also well-paced, and I enjoyed how the suspense and intensity increased as the story progressed. It definitely made for some nail-biting moments, especially as you get closer to the story’s climax, and the unexpected twists added to the intensity. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, something else happened that changed everything, and I love that! It’s not a predictable read, and it went in surprising (in a good way) directions. And the magic is so fascinating and complex, and I was eager to learn more about the inherited gifts and the friends’ use of it to bring back their best friend. It highlighted some interesting and thought-provoking ideas about the use and abuse of magic, as well as the ramifications of using magic you don’t understand even with good intentions.

A story about grief, loss, guilt, friendship, family, magic, and so much more, Deep in Providence is incredibly moving and powerful, and it’s a story that I’ll think about for a long time to come. I’m so grateful to the author and publisher for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. Deep in Providence is a brilliant debut novel by Riss M. Neilson, and I look forward to reading more by this talented, thought-provoking storyteller.

As soon as I heard about this book, I knew I needed to have it because it's based in Rhode Island! As much as I love my tiny state, it never gets the recognition it deserves. Deep in Providence does an excellent job of recognizing it, especially the varied cultural experience that happens in such a small space. As a resident, I loved seeing familiar places.

This book is labeled as YA fantasy, which is it, but it is also so much more than that. Deep in Providence tackles death, friendship, religion, magic, family, the immigrant experience, drug addiction, sexual assault, bisexuality and class favoritism all in one novel. And the author pulled it off brilliantly. There is a lot going on, but that's high school. The characters felt so authentic with fully-fleshed out lives, families, and history.

With all of this turmoil, the girls turn to magic to have some power over their experience. The magic system is based in Filipino culture, and it felt like real magic. Not sparkly, flashy magic. The spells were more elemental with herbs and intention versus wands and glitter. I liked that. This gave me strong feels of The Craft (if you are old enough to remember that movie.)

Deep in Providence lands in stores on May 31, and if you like witchy, diverse stories, you NEED this on your list.

4 stars. A unique and intriguing plot, gorgeous writing, and a likable cast of characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It’s split between three pov’s. Inez, Miliani, and Natalie after the death of their friend, Jasmine. They’re being haunted by her spirit and have to resort to magic to try and bring her back.

I think the author did a really good job with making all the characters and their voices distinct from one another. Outside of the main plot of trying to bring back their friend they all have other things going on in their lives which I liked. I loved the culture in this and the emphasis on family and friendships. I also really loved the discussion of tough topics like mental health, grief, and abortion. It was all handled really well.

I will say that I think this book felt a wee bit too long. It was slow going in the beginning and a bit towards the end and it definitely felt every bit of its 465 pages. The pacing was a bit uneven for me. Overall, this was a very entertaining and at times emotional read. It’s a damn impressive debut and I’m looking forward to seeing what Neilson does next.

Nothing I write could ever do this book justice 🥲
Not only has Deep in Providence become one of my 2022 highlights, it‘s also one of my top 5 favorite books!

CW: death, blood, grief, teen-pregnancy, miscarriage, sexual-harassment, drugs, addiction

DiP is a magical/slightly paranormal coming-off-age story, not only do we follow Mili, Nat and Inez on their everyday struggles, but also on their dealing with the death of their friend Jasmine who recently died in a car accident - the girls are willing to do everything in their power to bring her back, and if that means they have to engage in stronger and more dangerous magic, so be it.

DiP is written in three PoV, all of them being Mili, Nat and Inez; the chapters are mostly very short (around 3-5 pages long) - I usually find it hard to relate to characters in multiple PoV books with short chapters because there‘s no space to grow with them - but Neilson did this so well, we get to see and feel with the girls despite the short chapters and this just shows that Neilson knows what she does, her writing is immaculate ✨🤌🏼

All of them come from complicated families and each carries her own set of difficulties.
Mili's mother is dismissive and tries to prevent her daughter from practicing traditional filipino magic at all cost, so Mili gets help from her aunt Lindy - who‘s btw not Mili‘s aunt anymore, but OUR aunt - I dare you to fight me, Mili 👐🏼
Nat's mother is a drug addict and neglects Nat and her lil brother Devin, she’s rarely at home and doesn't take care of the kids, Nat does it all with the support of her older sister Leanna, who also hides a secret.
Inez comes from a strict Catholic family and doesn't know how to deal with practicing magic and believing in God.
She has a very hard time because her dad was deported back into his homeland and she’s supposed to sponsor him, therefore the weight on her shoulder is very heavy as she can’t afford to take any missteps, otherwise he might not be able to come back.

I LOVE each and every one of these girls and most of all I love their friendship, which is so resilient, full of power and magic - but also so vulnerable.
I enjoyed following a WoC group of friends with struggles that I could relate to, even though I'm from a completely different culture and don't live in RI but Germany - which mainly has to do with the fact that Neilson has woven in everyday-themes like poverty, addiction, depression, love, complicated family relationships, etc

And while the themes are heavy at times, Neilson executed them with such ease and such a beautiful writing style that I flew through the pages.
We learn a thing or two about Filipino traditions, and learn about magic and spirits - after all, the girls rely on the magical arts practiced by Mili's Filipino family.

The characters are well developed; I LOVED the sibling-dynamic between Nat and Dev as well as Inez and Victor (yeah I know he did this shitty thing but afterwards he was a very lovely brother), I also love aunty Lindy and how she’s helping Inez with her personal stuff.

The overall atmosphere of the book is rather calm, despite the heavy topics - but also kind of eerie at times, when it comes to the paranormal stuff 🥲

The story is slow at times, but that didn‘t hurt the plot at all.

Also the twist at the end was executed SO well!!

Anyways y‘all READ it!!

I‘ll definitely also get Riss Neilson‘s next book „I‘m not supposed to be in the dark“ 🤌🏼🤌🏼

Three Minute Thoughts:
This was a beautiful story! It was atmospheric, emotional and meaningful – but almost to the point where I wasn’t quite sure what was happening at times, which did bring down my enjoyment of this book a little. However, I loved the author’s portrayal of grief, and each of the characters was so well-written and realistic that I was in awe of the writing throughout my reading. A really fascinating novel!

The Extended, Long and Very-Possibly-Messy Review:
This was a stunningly-written story, but also a mildly confusing one. Now, that my have been my own fault, because I kept reading this at 1am, but I just didn’t understand some of the things that would happen! That being said though, the parts that I did understand were so incredibly interesting, and I was definitely captivated at certain sections of this book.

I do have to say that I got a little confused between our three MCs and their changing POVs, but again that may have been the 1am reading, because my brain just wasn’t at its peak while completing the majority of this novel. However, whenever I did know who was who and had all their backstories straight, I was amazed by how realistic and unequivocally human-like these characters were! This book is definitely not a light, fun read – it’s the kind of book that doesn’t provide escapism (despite the fantasy aspects), instead it’s a brutal dose of reality, but Riss M. Neilson definitely did that masterfully, if nothing else.

“I watch her standing there, her eyes lit up and her skin glowing in the dim light, looking like someone I know and someone I don’t, and I wonder how far she would go to get what she wants.”
(This quote may not be in the published version of this novel, it was copied from the advanced reader’s copy.)

This book had such nuance in the different messages threaded throughout, and while I have no doubt I missed a number of those messages, the few that I did pick up on were touching and beautiful. The messages on family and all its issues, on the complicated nature on religion and how it fits in with other clashing aspects of one’s life – all of these were so gorgeous to read about, and I can say with complete confidence that the author has such talent.

“There is no right or wrong way to go about these things, but I think you should know sometimes a person’s spirit is resting closer to you than you think. Maybe you weren’t looking hard enough before.”
(This quote may not be in the published version of this novel, it was copied from the advanced reader’s copy.)

Overall, while there were certain sections where I was confused while reading this, I enjoyed the majority of it and thought the writing was stunning. I’m glad I read it! Thank you so much to the author, publisher and Colored Pages for the review copy :).

This was intense and there was a lot going on in every character’s life that was just as high stakes as the original plot, which added weight to the pacing.

It’s clear Neilson took the craft seriously and that brought something very visual to it all, and while so much happened, each character and their troubles came across pretty clear.

It was very beautiful and heartfelt at times and I definitely got a little emotional especially towards the end but I don’t know about rating it just yet.

Thanks to Macmillan/Fierce Reads for my copy!

And congrats to Riss M. Neilson!!

This book was so dam delicious! I grabbed every chance I could to just devour it. Deep in Providence gave me everything my little heart hoped for. There's friendship, family, dark magic, love, healing and even some laughs along the way. There was nothing this book was lacking, there is nothing that could have made it any better.

There is a lot going on in this story. Each main character has their own things they're dealing with stitched into the main story. Normally I wouldn't enjoy so much going on but everything is woven together so magnificently. It's incredibly fast paced and the flow is just incredible! I'm still in shocked how a book can have so many different things going on and still have it all coherent and effortless. It's been days since I finished this book and I'm still stunned by how well done it is.

This is Riss M. Neilson's debut novel and I'm calling it now, Riss is an author to watch! Deep In Providence is an incredibly written work of art and I can't wait to see what she releases next. Sign me up!

I am in awe of this book. I don’t tend to read a lot of magical realism, but this was above and beyond my expectations. This story was haunting and emotional. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been having a week, but this book has been powerful to me.

Told through multiple points of view, you get to know each character and how this tragic event affects them. Neilson brings the magic to life through the three best friends and beautiful writing. Each young lady has a distinctive voice and a distinct journey they must travel. While the book covers grief, it also covers important and hard-hitting topics, such as sexuality and drug addiction.

This is such a moving story that you can’t help but love and feel like you’re right there with each character. In addition, the plot is intriguing and beautifully told. The pacing was great, and the story’s intensity increased as the story progressed. This story is brilliantly told; you wouldn’t believe this is the author’s debut novel.

Now, Miss Ma'am...
How DARE you write such a masterpiece? From the beginning, this journey GRIPPED me. I could not put it down and had to force myself to go to bed, just to pick it up right away the next morning.

I laughed, cried, felt joy, felt hurt, felt so much love (and annoyance) for these characters, and even scared a few times. And after I landed on the last page, I had to just sit and silence for a minute to absorb the journey I was just on and come to the realization that the journey was over. My HEART😭❤️.

These characters were my babies and I feel like I need to go back and relive this journey. Thank you for such an amazing adventure. I connected deeply with them, with their lives and struggles. The writing was amazing. The pace was perfect. The characters flawed, but so lovable and human. I honestly can't wait to hear it on audiobook.

Deeply amazing. ❤️

Deep in Providence promised so many things I've been craving in a book, and it delivered on every single one of them expertly. The need to see what would happen next kept me up reading through exhaustion on several occasions. The love this group of girls has for each other is beautiful and inspiring and real, and I really appreciated getting to see each of their perspectives and journey with them through their individual troubles outside of their quest to bring Jasmine back to them. I truly felt their grief, their desperation, their hopes, and their fears (and when those creepy moments snuck up on them...chills!). I'm so grateful to have had the chance to read this early, and I can't wait to have it on my shelf in May!!

An incredible 4.5 stars rounded up!

I loved this book. It was beautifully written, the characters were compelling and interesting, and I loved the POV switches, they were perfect for story progression but also for really fleshing out the girls’ personalities. You really get a sense for who they are. And being able to seamlessly switch between characters with different mannerisms and the way they talk really added to it! It was deep, emotional, sad, uplifting, positive, and a mystery up until the very end! Even had me tearing up at the end…

I got this as a Once Upon a Book Club box, and not only was the book amazing, but the special goodies that went along with it were splendid as well!!

Highly highly recommend this fun read!

I got chills from the very first sentence and I knew right then, this would be a story filled with emotions in the best way possible. I’m no psychic, but I’m so glad I was right.

Neilson crafts emotion, haunting, pain, love, joy, and complex characters in a way that wants you turning the page for “just one more chapter” (spoilers: you will stay up all night reading it). With such strong prose and descriptive imagery, I cannot wait for what she writes next!

A very emotional book at it's core, there was still whimsy and magic mixed in that I thoroughly enjoyed. I felt it was long and the voice between the three POVs got muddled a few times which took away from the characterization of the three girls but it was still interesting nonetheless.

TW: self-harm, drug abuse, miscarriage, anxiety, child abuse

Deep in Providence revolves around friendship. The ride or die, blood pact to keep us knitted together, variety. And what I enjoyed about this debut is that Neilson balances this connection between them with the space for their individual stories to shine. Each of these teens, Miliani, Inez and Natalie, have to reconcile with the past. Their own navigation of loss, grief, anger, and resentment. Of both living and departed ghosts. Natalie who is trying to be there for her brother and manage the inconsistences of her mother struggling with her own addiction. Inez whose religious family doesn't seem to leave any room for her own interpretations or feelings. And Miliani who wants to bring back Jas to reconcile her own guilt. Their stories are moving. How they ask us whether we can save ourselves if we're too busy saving others. When it's time to finally release control and know that we can't force someone to change.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!

”She opened the window to let the cold air inside, but the stench of death only got stronger as the minutes ticked by.”

Deep in Providence follows Miliana, Inez, and Natalie after the death of their close friend Jasmine. Each of their perspectives are showcased in the book, and from the beginning, you can feel the grief they are feeling.

The novel tackles topics from grief and teen pregnancy to addiction and outing, making it a relevant read for many. I was a big fan of the writing throughout. I dislike a lot of books with contemporary settings because of the lack of creative writing style, but the paranormal aspects of Deep in Providence gave it the immersive atmosphere it needed.

This book is so beautifully written from start to end. Deep in Providence is a debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what the author, Riss M. Neilson, creates next.

As you can see, I gave it a good shot, but I can't force myself to continue.

The characters lack of personality. Even though they have very different backgrounds, I never knew whose pov I was in, because they are all the same. And since this book doesn't have a strong plot nor characters, what's the point of it?

Shewwww, this one definitely tugged at my heartstrings. I loved how this handled grief, and of course the witchy vibes. There were times where I would have to go back, and see who’s point of view I was reading from. I feel like the girls’ personalities didn’t stand out too much from each other’s. I would definitely reccomend this one, and will be checking out more from this author.
