In 1982, Leslie Jordan stepped off a Greyhound bus from the hills of Tennessee, said “hello” to Hollywood and has never looked back. With hundreds of television shows, films and commercials to his credit, he has become a familiar face on the entertainment scene.

Leslie is the 2006 Emmy Award Winner for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his delicious portrayal of “Beverley Leslie” on “Will and Grace.” Television audiences will also remember him for his recurring roles on “Privileged,” “Ugly Betty,” “Boston Legal,” and “Reba.”

Feature film audiences will recognize Leslie from his performance as “Brother Boy” in Del Shores’ adaptation of his play “Sordid Lives’” with Olivia Newton-John, Delta Burke and Beau Bridges. He is reprising the role in the television series based on the play and film for the cable network Logo. Other upcoming feature film appearances include “Love Ranch” in a wonderful scene with Helen Mirren directed by Taylor Hackford.

On stage, Mr. Jordan won the Ovation Award, The Garland Award and The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of “Preston Leroy,” the aging, sodden barfly in Del Shores hit play “Southern Baptist Sissies.”

Mr. Jordan has enjoyed considerable success as a writer. His book My Trip Down the Pink Carpet for Simon and Schuster is currently in bookstores. Material from the book formed the basis of a 90-minute one-man show, which had a successful 45 city book-signing/performance tour in 2008. A dvd of the show shot during performances in Atlanta will be released.

My heart truly aches as I think about the loss of this genuinely caring, funny and authentic human. I highly recommend Mr Jordan’s memoir— in his own voice you’ll quickly learn what humility and grace are. Rest in peace dear man.

Leslie Jordan is one of those character actors who is always a happy surprise when he pops up — Designing Women and Will and Grace being two examples of his recurring roles. I know when I see him, I’m going to laugh and he will most likely steal a scene or two.

What I never knew was his name or anything about him (remember IMBd was decades away).

Then came Covid 19 and my husband’s social media problem (I say addiction, he says I exaggerate— no doubt the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I digress). He came upon Leslie’s daily Instagram videos and urged me to take a look. At first it annoyed me but after two or three, I was hooked. Jordan’s way of verbalizing what we were all feeling, especially during the early days of the pandemic, was so easy to relate to. As we both watched him— I was happily learning more and more about the actor who had always been good for a laugh.

This book— which I listened to rather than read— was quite simply a great joy from start to finish. I laughed, teared up a few times, and than giggled a lot more.

Despite “fame” or recognition, everyone has a story. I highly recommend Mr. Jordan’s story— his delivery is as sublime as his acting!!

Comic actor Leslie Howard shares fun recollections and reflections in How Y'All Doing? Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived .

Do you read books written by celebrities? I read a few memoirs here and there, but that’s about it. However, when I saw Leslie Jordan’s smiling face on the cover of this book, I couldn’t resist. It's not really a memoir, but more a collection of memories and anecdotes.

Jordan is best known for his Emmy Award-winning role as Beverley Leslie on Will & Grace as well as for roles on multiple seasons of American Horror Story . He’s also an outspoken activist for equal rights.

In How Y'All Doing? , Jordan shares humorous stories from different times in his life and career, from the time Debbie Reynolds called his mother after he appeared in the National Enquirer while wearing drag, to his fascination with dolls, or his run-in with a group of homophobic thugs. The stories feel like Jordan is there talking to you, saying, “Did I ever tell you about the time Lady Gaga and I…”

This was a quick, fun, sometimes poignant read, and I’d imagine that the audio would be hysterically funny since he narrates it. At times I wondered whether one person could have that many wacky adventures, but I realized that if anyone could, it’s Leslie Jordan!

What a wonderful audiobook!!!

Leslie Jordan makes listening to this memoir feel like a conversation with an old friend. It felt restorative, the way a trip home can.

In a quick 4 hours, I laughed a lot and cried a little while Leslie shared various anecdotes from his life. He has such a charming way of retelling events; they're easy to picture and you get so wrapped up in the tale you might miss the lesson.

This book is by no means preachy, but there is an opportunity to learn some new things. With each story Leslie includes his gratitude for the experience and his takeaways in a casual take it if it you want to kind of way.

What really resonated with me was the gentle reminder that if we are able to we should strive to be of service to others and we should be proactive about finding ways to support our communities.

HOW Y'ALL DOING?: Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived By LESLIE JORDAN

Review and Tribute
(Audiobook Narrated by Leslie Jordan - 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

In the midst of my shock and heartbreak over Leslie Jordan's passing, I was inspired to listen to his audiobook. In his true comedic form, he made me laugh and cry simultaneously. Because he narrates the audiobook personally, I chose it over reading the book. Hearing him tell his life story brought me deep comfort.

During the pandemic Leslie Jordan became a lifeline for many, including myself, who did not know him personally. I gained a deeper understanding of his personality, humor, and love for others as a result of listening to the audio. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Leslie's How Y'all Doing is full of wit and charm, lifting our spirits even in the darkest days. With his huge heart and his ability to laugh at every experience, he was well known for sharing them with others. It is evident that he was a warm and friendly person with a joyous disposition. Leslie learned to live a life of wisdom and authenticity as he grew older. This makes his stories even more precious as we pay tribute to one of America's most beloved personalities.

Leslie Jordan is one of the funniest people and this book is utterly and completely charming. I’ve loved him since his Will & Grace days and hearing him tell such incredible stories about his early life, career, addiction and recovery, etc. was powerful. I have developed a total obsession with audiobook memoirs narrated by the author and this one did not disappoint.

Favorite quotes/stories:

💫When he was young, Leslie decides to give his favorite doll a cute pixie cut and some Twiggy lashes. Needless to say, this did not go very well and the look ended up more “drug-crazed mental patient” than chic and sophisticated. The dolls post makeover look scared him so much, he threw her outside but then continued to check on her every day to make sure she was okay out in the yard.

💫That time Carrie Fisher put her mom Debbie Reynolds on the phone with Leslie. Debbie sympathized over bad publicity and offered to call Leslie’s mom to talk to her about not taking gossip or bad media articles personally.

💫“There is no shame in saying, I do not have this in me.”

*Note -> All memoirs will be given a 5⭐️ by me. I cannot judge someone’s life and therefore my choice is between not rating the book or giving it a 5-star rating. I prefer to support their hard work by giving them that rating to help boost their book.

An interesting story if you have watched Leslie’s work. He has been on TV, in the movies and on stage. He is so Southern, proudly, just like me! I could ‘hear’ his voice as I read this book. That made the book that much more fun. He had dark times as most people do but he rose to the top.

Leslie Jordan's memoir was full of funny stories as expected, a bit about his acting career with celebrity stories, but it was also full of unexpected life lessons. I listened to the audiobook so I could hear it read by the author.

I really appreciated hearing about him coming out during a time it was even more taboo to do so, especially for him coming from a very conservative and evangelical background. His work with Project Nightlight, a volunteer organization that stays with those in hospice care while dying from AIDS, will endear him to me always. That is truly caring work. And how finding the gay community in West Hollywood made it possible for him to grow and find the work he loved.

I also appreciated listening to a confident and caring gay man talk about his family who may not have always understood or accepted his sexual orientation, but who acted with love first, which made it possible for their relationships to stay strong. He shares some lovely insights about his childhood and having family who allowed him to play with dolls, learn to sew, dress up, and dance. Would that every gay child feel so free in their youth. Or heck, ANY child, let's get rid of gender stereotypes and let all our kids play and pretend as they like!

Short, but sweet, like the author himself (though he does admit to his occasional pettiness - but hey, who doesn't have THAT?), How Y'all Doing? was a lighthearted, sometimes laugh-out-loud, listen that sounded just like a good friend sharing stories. What Leslie Jordan did for everyone's mental health in 2020 with his Instagram videos is only expanded and offers more heart than ever with his book.

This book is less a memoir and more a retelling of random experiences from the author's life. It wasn't profound or anything, but some of the stories were interesting. Of course in all of them, Leslie Jordan is over-the-top and dramatic, as he is wont to be. He's silly and funny, but a little full of himself for my liking. Maybe he was just a hair too honest about how much he likes to hear himself talk. I did listen to this on audiobook, which Leslie Jordan narrates himself, so I got the full immersive experience. Most of it wasn't significant enough to stick with me, but there were a few unexpected parts where he admitted that he failed or couldn't do what was expected of him. My favorite story was where he was uncharacteristically brave. All in all, I didn't love it but it was a very quick and easy read.

I’ve only seen Leslie in a few things, but he’s always delightful and I was really intrigued to settle into something from him.

Each chapter is its own story — filled with minor tangents here and there, of course. What I loved the most is that I could hear Leslie telling the story as it’s very conversational.

This was a quick and fun read filled with heart and I’m definitely interested in future works from Leslie.

This is a mostly breezy, sometimes touching, but always entertaining memoir. I chose the audiobook because it’s read by Jordan himself, which is how this ought to be experienced.

I know Leslie Jordan from the tv show Will & Grace. But that was the extent of me knowing about him so, hearing him share stories from his life was enjoyable to listen to.

I found it interesting how Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds played a big part in helping Leslie's mom be okay with how Leslie represented their family name in public.

Last year on IG I saw a funny video that Leslie did. Here is the video. *LOL* After seeing that short clip every so often I check out his page to see what entertaining tales he has to share. For readers looking to laugh Leslie's Instagram is the place to look.

There were a lot of gay people who thought this extremely effeminate performance was offensive and portrayed gay men in a bad light. Especially since all this nonsense was coming from two straight men.
Not me!
I hollered.
Honey, we gotta be able to laugh at ourselves. (PG 10)

3.5 REST IN PEACE, LESLIE!

This little book was funny and amusing. Leslie Jordan has the sense of humor that I admire in people that see things as an observer, an unexpected laugh. This is what I'm trying to guide my kids to be. If anyone makes fun of you laugh along and make fun of the things that bother you and people will leave you alone. Why sour your life over an opinion, ugly jealous words? When I was in school I'd get laughed at for being born in Mexico and then it was my height. So I called myself a wetback overgrown midget. Who cares? Leslie Jordan did all this in the novel. Showing us he was dramatic and accepting.

People are consistently disappointing and he writes that's it's okay, he understands. You be you and let me be me as long as no one forces change on one another. He seemed like one of the most open-minded people I've never met.

It was a read I needed. Something light and humorous in this life filled with wars and shocked idiots.

The pictures were an extra added smile. His baby pictures were adorable.

Quick and fun read! You could just hear him coming off the pages... definitely made me laugh out loud more than once

I wish there had been so much more about his career instead of the going on about growing up, his horse obsession, etc, but I'm still glad I read it.

I love listening to memoirs by audiobook. It's been a while since I have listened to a memoir, so I looked through The Libby app and came across Leslie Jordan's How Ya'll Doing?: Misadventures and Mischief From A Life Well Lived. I couldn't pass it up!

I first fell in love with Leslie Jordan when he was on Will and Grace as Beverly Leslie, the frenemy of the infamous Karen Walker. His most famous words went from "well, well, well" to "weeelll shiiittt"!

I enjoyed Leslie sharing stories about his southern upbringing and much more. I could listen to him tell stories all day! He's hilarious and has a heart of gold.

If you haven't checked out his Instagram page @thelesliejordan that made him famous, you should! He's a hoot!

I think this book would be great for those who are interested in the Hollywood lifestyle. My adoration alone for Leslie just wasn’t enough to enjoy this book. For 200 pgs he rambled on about movies, plays and shows he’s done over the years. He also sprinkled in a little bit of info about his life outside of Hollywood. But it left me feeling like I’d wasted my time. I’m sure this would’ve been better as an audiobook.

I admit that I picked this up on a whim while browsing library offerings for short audiobooks. I have seen Leslie Jordan in a few things, and enjoyed him in them, but I don't know that I would or could really consider myself a fan. I also didn't follow him on Instagram, unlike the remainder of humanity. (That doesn't make me cool or anything, it's just a factual statement of my lack of social media awareness/skill.)

Anyway, so I picked this up, and I honestly had no idea what to expect, which is how I like to roll. I liked it well enough though - some short stories and anecdotes about his life and all told in his voice and style makes for an enjoyable few hours.

Leslie Jordan was that person who made me laugh and smile during those first months of Covid. He never got political and he made a time that was pretty intense, a little more light hearted. He was everything that the news wasn’t and it was refreshing. I’d watch his “video” clip for that day/week and immediately die laughing. I would then send it to friends, family and my 16 year old daughter. So, he deserved for me to take the time to listen to his book. This is one of those books I think is best being read by the author. He deserves every success.

Emmy award winning actor, Leslie Jordan, known for his outlandish character Beverly Leslie on Will and Grace and his stints on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story series has been constantly working, minding his own business for many, many years. But that all changed when during the pandemic he became bored and discovered Instagram. And with one single tweet, “Well, shit. How y’all doing.” he became an instant hit on the social media platform and now has millions and millions of followers.

In his most recent book, How Y’All Doing, Jordan, in his perhaps long-winded, now where was I, funny tale teller way, writes essays about his life, family and acting career. From his love of ponies from a young age, the death of his father when he was very young and of his travels with some eccentric friends, he has mastered the art of storytelling.

In one essay he writes about meeting Carrie Fisher at an AA meeting and after having a discussion with her about his drinking and how it has affected his mother, it unbeknownst to him, led to a call from Debbie Reynolds to his mother, who of course thought the call was a joke!

He spends some of the book writing about the gossip and stories while he was working on the set of The Help with Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer. He also dishes the dirt on other acting gigs such as American Horror Story.

But, as in all lives, he also draws on his darker side as a young gay man trying to find himself and becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol. He explains that after his father was killed in the war his mother struggled to keep the family which included his twin sisters as well as himself together.

He writes with a sense of flair and sarcasm which he also exhibits while doing his Instagram posts. His stories might begin somewhere and veer, but they always come back to his main points and moral of the story. Although a short book, it is filled with sentimental, funny stories and gossip which are enjoyably interesting.

If you love watching Leslie Jordan’s hilarious videos on social media, then this book is for you! HOW Y’ALL DOING? is a collection of a dozen essays that are heart-felt and hilarious. 💕

See below for a sneak peek and go to www.thenerddaily.com to read the full review. Many thanks to William Morrow Books for gifting me a galley and finished copy of this book. HOW Y’ALL DOING? comes out April 27th!

“ ... Jordan covers a little bit of everything in this compact book. He shares the trials and tribulations of learning Instagram, his love for reading, and discusses his iconic roles in television shows like Will & Grace and American Horror Story. He reflects on growing up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, how this impacted his coming out as gay, and how his larger than life personality has been just a little too big for his hometown at times. He even delves into more weighty topics like the loss of his father at age 11, his battle with addiction, and the importance of his sobriety.

With a whole lot of heart and even more laughs, Jordan captures his personality perfectly on the page in How Y’all Doing? In fact, this would be a great book to pick up on audio. Although I read a hard copy, I could practically hear his signature southern drawl in my head throughout, and I’m sure the real thing is priceless!”

Leslie is adorable 😍💖💕 Really enjoyed listening to his stories and hearing it in his voice.
He has such warm vibe about him, I didn't want the journey to end.

I didn't know much about him before I requested his book from the library. Kelly's enthusiasm *points to her name tagged in review* got my interest peaked and decided to look it up:). Hopefully I will get to watch him in his other work soon (I am horrible at catching up on my movie 🎥/TV watching 📺 anymore).

Would recommend 👌👍👏

I love Leslie Jordan so much and it’s really wonderful to hear him telling his own stories. This book was sweet and adorable and everything I hoped it would be.

I can’t imagine growing up in the 50’s and 60’s as a gay person, but he did and came out of it so joyful and thankful after years of recovery. I miss seeing his shenanigans.

4.5 stars. I think if you read this book, it would be much less on stars. But I listened to it on audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed it. Leslie Jordan is funny and the way he told it was fun and entertaining. I never felt bored. Although, he does repeat a lot of information, and I almost gave it 4 stars. But I remembered how many times I laughed in the car for a five hour drive down to the border inbetween hawk spotting.
