Paen Scott is a Dark One: a vampire without a soul. And his mother is about to lose hers too if Paen can’t repay a debt to a demon by finding a relic known as the Jilin God in five days.Half-elf Samantha Cosse may have gotten kicked out of the Order of Diviners, but she’s still good at finding things, which is why she just opened her own private investigation agency.

Paen is one of Sam’s first clients and the only one to set her elf senses tingling, which makes it pretty much impossible to keep their relationship on a professional level. Sam is convinced that she is Paen’s Beloved—the woman who can give him back his soul...whether he wants it or not.

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

Sprecherin: Vera Teltz
Der Sprecherin würde ich 5 Sterne geben.

I’m glad I was persistent with this series. It’s getting better and better. The characters and plot were interesting. I don’t know why MacAlister insists on giving the main female character a clueless best friend, but this one was one of the least annoying. I liked how MacAlister is connecting her books with some of the same characters reappearing. It makes sense that there would be some overlap in characters since all of the characters are connected to the “Otherworld” and they are in Europe (mostly the UK and France). I’m actually surprised that Aishling Grey hasn’t appeared in any of the Dark Ones books, but Noelle seems to be the token Guardian for this series. Demon and demon lords seem to be a common enemy for everyone regardless of the type of being they are, so the need for Guardians is high.

Warning, spoiler alert following. I liked this story because it was different. Paen, which is a really cool name by the way, wasn’t looking for a Beloved and didn’t want one. He didn’t even accept Sam once they joined and she became his Beloved. Sam in response gave up the mortality she gained from being a Beloved in trade for something more useful to her at the time. Paen and Sam eventually work it out, but this story had a different formula with the same result and that’s what intrigued me. It didn’t seem like a story I had read before. It was exciting and new. A refreshing read after some not so great ones.

This book was definitely action packed with twists and turns. I also enjoyed the fact that there were multiple villains and a well-dressed spider monkey to spice things up. On top of all that, Sam was a fully functional person (a little clumsy but not limping), which had me oh so thankful. I’m glad that MacAlister finally took the time to explain how it feels to be without a soul. I would have never guessed it was like that and it makes it even more interesting that Paen rejected Sam in the beginning.

Something that did not make sense to me was the disappearance of Daniel and Avery, Paen’s other brothers. They went to Lachmanol Abbey looking for references of the Jilin God statue and were never heard from again. As close of a family as they are, I’m surprised they weren’t more involved in the storyline.

I wouldn’t have minded a picture or two of the brothers or the castle, but overall this book was a good read! Looking forward to the next.

I haven't really liked most of the books in this series but this one is very good. Vampire Paen is your typical tortured hero though not so much because he was tortured perse. He was born without a soul and as a Dark One he has no hope unless he finds his Beloved. He, of course, doesn't believe this is possible and feels hopeless. When searching for a missing artifact for Paen, Samantha falls head over heels for Paen. The ensuing battle - two actually - the first is Samantha trying to get through to Paen and the second is with the demon harrassing Paen for the statue. All in all lots of tension both sexual and physical.

I loved the dialogue between Paen and Samantha. It was both humorous and touching. Ain't love grand?

Paen, a Dark One who leads a nice life with his three Moravian brothers and their parents in Scotland. Sam is a mutt, half human half sun-elf, who got kicked out of the academy of diviners and now opens her own private detective agency with her cousin Clare, a fairy in denial.
Paen gets a visit by an alaster a demon type who calls in a debt of his father and gives him 5 days to find a certain statue or his mother will loose her soul. Paen and his brother Finn then employ Sam as a private investigator and things spiral out of control quickly.

Paen and Sam both lead nice lives, he uses his time to research the origins of the Moravian Dark Ones and she uses her skills of finding things to build up her own agency. Paen doesn't want a Beloved, thinking he is happy without a woman at his side and without being saved. Sam has this little issue with uncontrolled astral projections when she gets aroused and their relationship starts off as a simple sexual relationship. Things do not stay simple because of a situation with a demon trying to kill them, repeatedly, and his mother's soul to be saved and stuff.

I really wanted to like this, but...

Where do I start? The heroine, the MC, was a vapid, Half-elf who is kicked out of Diviners' School and opens her own detective agency. The premise would have worked for me if it weren't for the constant woe-is-me attitude she took on during the last few chapters. (I won't spoil the reason why.)

The male MC, a vampire, was so typical for these types of books, that he bored me instead of making me interested in his plight. I think I would have enjoyed seeing more of his brother, Finn, in the story. He, and a few other side characters, are why this is getting 2 stars.

The side characters were mostly just shoved in to move the secondary story along, being the search for items that may or may not be of importance to the male MC. Oh, and the main story, which I didn't really touch on, is the romance building between the two MCs, with lots of erotic scenes thrown in.

One side character I enjoyed the reveal for was Pilar, the demon. There were some interesting twists brought into the story through him.

The plot is predictable, but in these types of stories, they typically are supposed to be. It's why they are so popular.

I did enjoy the scene where she emits too much light and gets chased by butterflies. I also appreciated that the mythology was based on Chinese myths and not the standard Greek/Roman pantheon.

But. Do you really expect me to believe that a 33 year old woman who has just gained immortality would give it up in trade for basically nothing in return just because this dumb guy she has known for three days isn't ready to be in a relationship? Honestly, after three days, it would be scarier if he was!

I don't know why MacAlister's books are all like this. The hero and heroine never fit well together. The humor is forced. The pacing is terrible.

Has a HEA. 💗 It hooked me, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I’m invested in the series overall and “have” to finish it (versus the book being amazingly fantastic). 🤷🏼‍♀️

In "Even Vampires Get the Blues," Paen Scott, a soulless dark one, faces a dire situation. His mother's soul is at stake, and he must find the Jilin God relic in 5 days to repay a debt to a demon. Enter Samantha Cosse, a skilled half-elf investigator recently expelled from the Order of Diviners. As Sam’s client, their connection goes beyond the professional, with Sam convinced she's Paen's Beloved whether he wants one or not.

1. **Plot and Storytelling:** 3/5, this Dark Ones novel didn't top my favorites list. While the story offered entertainment and minor twists, the ending lacked coherence without the necessary epilogue. I wished for heightened tension and more utilization of side characters to enhance the overall narrative.

2. **Characterization:** 3/5, the characters were generally well-crafted, but side characters needed more development. Paen's redemption lacked the dramatic flair I anticipated, although I appreciated Sam's authentic attributes—her strength, flaws, and genuine portrayal.

3. **Writing Style:** 4/5, MacAlister demonstrated a commendable writing style that maintained a smooth flow. The book's length was just right, and overall, I found the writing enjoyable.

4. **Originality:** 4/5, the story's uniqueness kept me guessing. However, it didn't captivate me as intensely as some of MacAlister's other works, leaving room for improvement in the enthrallment factor.

5. **Emotional Impact and Resolution:** 3.5/5, being the fourth in the Dark One series, this book adhered to the series' basic premise. However, it lacked the emotional resonance and tension present in MacAlister's other works. The dependence on an epilogue for a meaningful ending deducted points, as a book should ideally feel complete without additional chapters.

6. **Smut:** 4/5, the spice in romantic scenes was enjoyable, with telepathic elements adding an entertaining twist. It left me intrigued, pondering how such elements would translate into my own reality.

7. **Audiobook** 5/5, I enjoyed this narrator. I felt she conveyed the characters as well and told a great story.

Overall score: 3.78/7 (or about 3/5)

If you enjoyed "Even Vampires Get the Blues" by Katie MacAlister, you might also like Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse series) by Charlaine Harris or A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy) by Deborah Harkness. These recommendations offer a mix of paranormal romance, supernatural elements, and strong character dynamics, similar to the themes found in "Even Vampires Get the Blues."

This is the 4th in MacAlister's Dark Ones series, but it introduces all new characters so it's fine as a standalone or as an introduction to her Dark Ones world for new readers. Though the hero of the story is a vampire, the heroine is a half-elf and almost Diviner. Her cousin/roommate is a fairy (in denial). Sam and Clare are (brand new) private investigators hired by Paen. In the course of their investigation, they deal with a demon, poltergeist, Guardian, Seer, ghosts, and even a god or two. This is in some ways more intense than previous books; I feel like for every step forward, they take two steps back. Just when you think things can't get worse (or more convoluted) they do! But at the same time, it's so much fun watching Sam and Paen's relationship, as well as Clare and Finn. This is definitely a roller coaster ride that will keep you engaged, curious, and cheering for the good guys!

Don't bother unless you are desperate for Urban Fantasy. It has some good ideas, but they aren't executed very well. The main character tries too hard to be quirky, and comes across as annoyingly random. The story also contradicts itself at certain points, and the rules of the world this story exists in are not explained very well. The characters are consistently saved by plot convenience, and the ending is a literal deus ex machina. Also, there are too many sex scenes with no buildup; I started skimming over those after I got to the 3rd one.

It has some good ideas, so I hope the author was able to develop their story-telling with subsequent books. This book, however, is safe to pass up.

This book was really fun and fast-paced. It felt very tongue in cheek and I could tell the author was having a lot of fun. I think the plot was a little too convoluted but I still consistently enjoyed the book because the characters and romance were so fun. The final 100 pages had so many plot twists I felt like I was gonna get whiplash. But I also still had fun yknow? 4/5 Good stuff.

I keep hoping this series will get better, but its such a waste of time to read a book where u literaly hate the lead character.i rarely stop reading when i start,esp.100 pages to the end,but i just cant listen to her anymore.this is no romantic story..im guessing it will have a HE where the couple will be happy etc.but the female character in the book is just a bad reminder of everything thats so wrong in women .the author could adlest have given her a spine,so she would make him fight/try/work for her...but nooooooo...he is so sexy she just cant resist him..common!?in what universe, true or imaginery are women so pathetic and needy...isn't the point of a real romance, that the women is strong and cant be manipulated with a dick, and the man will give her the stars and the moon..isnt that the reason why we read fantasy romance novels?to escape and identify with the female character?

Samantha Cosse, half-fairy, was once a trainee for the Order of Diviners but was kicked out. She still has a gift for finding things. She and her fairy cousin are starting a private detective agency. They are given two cases back to back, one to find a document and one to find a statue. Paen Scott is a Scottish Lord and a Dark One. Samantha and Paen are immediately attracted to each other. Paen doesn't want to have a beloved so he fights the attraction to Samantha. I enjoy this series. It was campy in the right way. The only reason this wasn't a five-star was because I solved the mystery early in the book and it took the characters forever.

Kinda think it was too easy to figure out exactly the connection between the artifacts as soon as they were presented. So I knew maybe 1/4 through the book and the main characters only figure it out 3/4 through the book.

Nevertheless, an alright read. Some funny dialogue. Just maybe that level of predictability so early on becomes a little annoying the longer the characters remain ignorant of it.

Although I enjoy this wonderful and fantastic series, this was not my favorite book in the series. Great story line and adventure. Mild funny moments. I liked all the characters but the heroine bugged me just a little with her aggressive nature. How do you force yourself on someone and then get mad at them because they don’t reciprocate? The series is still awesome however so I’m continuing onward.

Ziemlich gut.

Another good addition to the series. Entertaining, not life changing. I liked the characters well enough, it had a good plot (with a few differences than the previous installments). A nice distraction.

What can I say? The main character is a bit crazy and the love interest is a pompous jerk. It’s so bad, it’s actually good. The plot itself is interesting and the dynamics with the main character’s Elf cousin are interesting.

Very predictable. It was an easy read, and I’ve reread it several times over the years as it’s a quick one, but there isn’t much substance to it. If you’re looking for a silly vampire novel full of other creatures without a lot of back story then this is the book for you.

Sometimes I wonder why some of these peeps even keep reading an author if they are just going to put them down. I really enjoyed this story as all of the previous stories. I read them back about 7 yrs. ago and liked them enough to reread now. I love the stories and I am rereading all of them.

Love these books. Somehow missed this one but found it .. can a sun elf love a dark one who can’t be in the sun at all? Have to read to find out. There is demons and gods and adventure and a sassy elf and brooding dark one.
