Three years ago, London society changed forever, with a revolution placing the widowed Queen firmly on the throne her blue blood husband tried to take from her. Humans, verwulfen and mechs are no longer considered the lesser classes, but not everybody is happy with the new order…

Standing between London and a deadly plot against the throne, are the dangerous spies and femme fatales that form the Company of Rogues... that's if they don't kill each other first.

Entire families have gone missing in the East End. When Caleb Byrnes receives an invitation to join the Company of Rogues as an undercover agent pledged to protect the crown, he jumps at the chance to find out who, or what, is behind the disappearances. Hunting criminals is what the darkly driven blue blood does best, and though he prefers to work alone, the opportunity is too good to resist.

The problem? He’s partnered with Ingrid Miller, the fiery and passionate verwulfen woman who won a private bet against him a year ago. Byrnes has a score to settle, but one stolen kiss and suddenly the killer is not the only thing Byrnes is interested in hunting.

Soon they’re chasing whispered rumours of a secret project gone wrong, and a monster that just might be more dangerous than either of them combined. The only way to find out more is to go undercover among the blue blood elite… But when their hunt uncovers a mysterious conspiracy, Byrnes and Ingrid must set aside their age-old rivalry if they have any chance at surviving a treacherous plot.

Ahhhh simply amazing ♡ Why are aren't more people reading her books??? Like seriously, if you're a fan of Paranormal Romance, look no farther. And what's better than Historical + Paranormal combined? Very few things indeed. I seriously looove this author. She is one of my absolute favorites. If you haven't read her London Steampunk series yet, then what are you waiting for!!? She has some seriously sexy vampires..

If you are interested you can start with this one, but I recommend you start with the 5 books (London Steampunk) before the events in this one. This one picks up a 3 years after London Steampunk ended. I was excited but also nervous, because I desperately wanted it to be as good as the books in London Steampunk, and let me tell you, the author did not disappoint me. Her books have everything I can hope for: Romance and FREAKING HOT steamy scenes, humor, action and mystery and characters you can't help but love!
I can't wait for the next book to read ♡

Holyyyyyyy guacamoleee!!!! Bec McMaster, one of my favorite authors, my favorite series!!! YAAAASSSSSSS! *happy dance happy dance*
This is me right now : .

*happy dance*

Bec McMaster, I could kiss you now.

I don't think I could ever forget you. You're one hell of a woman. And I don't know where this road will take us, or whether I can be what you want, but I do know that I want to explore that option."

I have no words. This world that Bec McMaster created is simply marvelous. I loved the original series, I adored it, hell, I wanted to live in it! And after reading this book, I can say that the spin-off is on a good way to be equally amazing.

The spin-off takes place three years after the original series. The queen now rules with the help of The Council of only the most trusted of her advisers, and everything seems to be going alright. But there are still many who don't like the changes she was responsible for and who want to end her reign. New enemies call for new allies. Some of them we already met and there are also quite a few new faces.

First, I need to mention the Duke of Malloryn. I was very intrigued by his mysterious character the second when he appeared in Kiss of Steel. He is so much more than meets the eye. I can't say how badly I want to get to his book. Then there are also Charlie, Ava, Kincaid, Jack... and the stars of this book are Ingrid and Byrnes. It totally took me by surprise when I learned they will be together because I was sure there is something between her and Jack. Well, how wrong I was about that. Also, Ava was completely smitten with Byrnes, so the two of them together was truly a surprise.

I liked Byrnes from the start. This serious, cold-blooded Nighthawk who was always by Lynch side. Of course, I was in love. As for Ingrid, I found her kind of annoying and unpleasant at first. Now, that I better know her background, I understand more why she was like that. So, I worried for nothing that they wouldn't work as a couple. They are actually wonderful. And I especially like that McMaster paired a blue-blood and verwulfen together. This is an explosive combination and a very different dynamic. I really liked that. All this flirty banter and sexual tension. Emotional, passionate verwulfen against stone-cold, possessive predator inside a blue-blood. That was one hell of a battle of wills. Like I said. Perfect!

Mine, it whispered, and Byrnes actually blinked. Then it was gone, his vision sliding through shades of black and gray, until color flooded back into his world and he had to wonder if he'd imagined that. Because, if he wasn't mistaken, the darker side of his nature had just stamped its claim on the most frustrating woman he knew.

As much as I liked these two together, I couldn't be happier when Lynch arrived on a scene. God, I still love him the most. Every scene with him was precious. And I was grinning like an idiot over him bonding with Byrnes. They were so adorable when they were discussing family and babies. And it's good to see Rosa didn't stop being her old self now that she is a duchess and a mother.

"Rosa's not entirely certain what to think of this entire affair. If she picks up her knife, I'd duck for cover if I were you."
"I always duck for cover when Rosa's giving me that look."

Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely. The plot, the characters, the romance, everything was perfect. My only complaint - and a very little one - is that it was maybe too crowded with all the characters. On the other hand, I liked that their stories are all intertwined. In the first series, some of them didn't have many interactions with each other. But all the loose ends might come together now.

"It's no longer about winning your body, Ingrid. When I finish these challenges, I intend to win your heart."

description

And a note for those who have the updated Kindle version with the stunning new cover. The epilogue is missing. At least in my version, it was gone when it was updated. I don't know if this is an error or the author's choice. It's really a shame because it is really beautiful. If you have a chance to get your hands on it, then you must. You won't be sorry, it's almost the best part of the book.

I'm thilled that Ms. McMaster wrote this spin-off! I've been missing the world of the London Steampunk series!!!

I loved both the heroine and the hero. Both Caleb and Ingrid are great and I loved them!
I usually don't like very much when the hero is all I'm too bad for her, but I loved it here! Maybe because I enjoyed how Caleb's reticence just melted when it come in contact with Ingrid's passion! Or maybe because Ingrid was such a strong heroine that Caleb didn't stand a chance! LOL

I love the introduction of the new villain: the Master! I'm so curious to find out who he (or she) is!!! I have a suspition, but I'm not sure! I want to read the next book and find out at least something more!

I loved all the other secondary characters too!! And I loved that all the "races" are here: we have the werewolfen, the blue bloods, the mechs!!! I loved how the world has evolved after the fall the the prince consort, but most of all the fact that, now that the tyranny has ended, not everything is perfect! There's still crime and they're still those who are not happy at all with the actual state of things! That is the masterful touch!

Obviously I loved Caleb's and Ingrid's relationship and passion. Their hot moments were just that: scorching hot! *fanning myself*

A wonderful start of the new series!!!

I want to know what it feels like to explore that... that spark between us. I want to exorcise you from my mind, from my thoughts. That's all. I want to burn like the supernova that flames through my veins when you're nearby, and drown myself in these feelings until it's done. Until you're... extinguished from my soul."

It’s been three years since the prince consort was overthrown by the queen and London society changed completely. Humans, mechs and verwulfen aren’t seen as less anymore, their rights restored and Echelon society are no longer the top class. But not everyone is satisfied with these changes and a dangerous evil is stalking the streets. Families has gone missing, people has been murdered and invites has been sent to certain people in hope of forming a group of elite agents to protect the people, the queen and put a stop to whatever evil plot has been put in motion.

Caleb Byrnes is a blue blood, an agent of the crown and hunting criminals is what he does best. He prefers to work alone, but when he receives his invitation to join the Company of Rogues and investigate the mysterious disappearances, he can’t refuse. Even if accepting means partnering with the very woman who drove him crazy a year ago and who left him tied to a bed. Ingrid Miller gets under his skin like no other person ever has, makes him lose his iron control and Caleb has a score to settle with her and hopefully he’ll finally be able to get her out of his system and move on.

Ingrid is a verwulfen, fiery and passionate and she loves challenging Caleb. She knows that keeping her distance from him is the only way to protect herself, but being partnered with him again is proving distance impossible. Soon they are discovering an evil conspiracy, monsters that they thought couldn’t exist, and they’ll have to put their trust in each other if they want to survive.

Perhaps it was that fact that made him so irresistible to her: she wanted to ruffle him, wanted to see him undone, that facade washed away and replaced by the beating heart within him.

I loved Ingrid, how feisty and sassy she was, but also how vulnerable she was because of her past and the way verwulfens were treated before. I loved the sparring between her and Caleb and how she kept him on this toes and made him lose that control he kept so well around others.

He was going to throttle her. Slowly. Or maybe kiss her. He hadn't quite decided.

Byrnes was great, so cool, calm and a bit of a loner, and so different around Ingrid. I loved how he teased her, how he pursued her, trying to get her into bed, hoping it would rid him of his need for her.

"I love you, Ingrid. They're the only words that I know, and they're not empty." Pressing her hand to his chest, he gave a faint smile. "They fill me up, in here. I never knew there was so much emptiness inside until I met you, but you fill me up. You make every day a revelation."

The romance was great, filled with lots of sexual tension and playful banter. I did feel like in the beginning Ingrid’s feelings for Byrnes were a lot deeper than his for her, especially after what happened between them a year ago and I didn’t like that, but as the story progressed and Byrnes got more protective of Ingrid, realising that what he felt for her wasn’t something that was every going to go away and finally pursuing her with the intent to win her forever, and I really started loving their romance.

I love this world Bec McMaster created, with its steampunk elements set in a historical setting and I’m so glad that the London Steampunk plot continues with this series. We got to meet an entire new crew of members, but also old characters from the previous series, which I was very happy about. I’m especially intrigued by Gemma Townsend and the mysterious Obsidian. And of course blue blood Ava with her mechanical heart and sexy mech Kincaid, who seems to carry much hatred for blue bloods. The plot was captivating and action-packed with the Company of Rogues trying to find out why and how people are going missing and who is behind it.

I loved the London Steampunk series and I’m very glad to see it continue its arc with this new series. Highly recommended to all romance fans who loves steampunk and paranormal elements in a historical setting for their romances.

**I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

“'Revenge is going to be very sweet,’ Byrnes whispered in her ear as he brushed past.
She followed him, feeling that little thrill tingling through her blood, unable to stop herself from whispering, ‘Just remember: two can play at that game.’”

Rating: 4

When I was reading this book and realized that this story was about a newly assembled team of detectives/spies:

– Especially since one of the team members is the sweet, charismatic Charlie from the previous books.

There are six of them; we have our aloof investigator, hot-blooded verwulfen, sweet inventor, charming thief, grumpy mech, and playful spy. If you have read the London Steampunk series (which hopefully you have/will because the plot, character history, and terms would be lost on you), you would recognize some of them, with Byrnes, Ingrid, Ava, and Charlie being in that bunch. For the most part, Byrnes and Ingrid, the main characters, do most of the work in trying to solve the mystery of a mass disappearance, but it has been a delight seeing this group that seemingly has little in common with each other get to know one another, and actually start acting liking a team. The plot, romance, and characters have all been enjoyable to read.

The plot is a whole lot of fun, and I believe it is a fitting addition to the London Steampunk series. There are spying/espionage, a masquerade ball, detective work, psycho vampires, a rescue mission, etc. Besides the “fun” parts, I also really appreciate that Bec McMaster has shown us the aftermath of the rebellion that took place in the last book. It would have been easy (and unfortunate) for her to just end her series there, when peace is supposedly restored and humans, blue bloods, mechs, and verwulfen all have equal rights now. However, McMaster has realistically shown us that after the revolution, everything is not simply fixed, after years of prejudice, oppression, and animosity. This is set three years after the rebellion, as tension rises again.

When I first heard about the couple for this book, I was honestly feeling skeptical. I thought Ingrid already had something with Jack (from Rosa and Lynch’s story in the 3rd book) and Byrnes had something with Ava (from Perry and Garrett in the 4th book). So when I heard that Ingrid and Byrnes were going to be together, I was like, “Uhh.. What?”

Fortunately, this is not an actual love triangle/square. As I saw Ingrid and Byrnes get together, it honestly felt right (this is not a spoiler because all London Steampunk books are happily-ever-after guaranteed for whomever the book is centered on). They are literally opposites, with Ingrid being hot-blooded and expressive, and Byrnes being more cool and collected. There are a lot of teasing and sexual tension between them, as they play their cat and mouse games. While it is cute and funny to see them play their games to seduce one another, I love the moment when they finally choose to put away their pride and fear to give in for an actual relationship and life together. I also really adore that even though Byrnes prefers to never let Ingrid in any danger during their missions, she stands her grounds and he learns to trust and respect her strength and abilities. By the time I reach the epilogue, my heart is literally melting from the bond they have formed.
NOTE: There is sexual content in this book.

“'Ingrid Miller.’ Byrnes’s voice was soft as honey, his arms like steel. ‘Are you going to tell me that you don’t hesitate to launch yourself at a vampire, and yet a tiny, insignificant rat sets you quaking?’
‘Shut up.’”

Furthermore, I find Ingrid as an individual character rather likable. I mean she could get irritating at times when she is too hot-blooded, but then again, that is somewhat part of her nature. When she sees a wrong is being done, her first instinct is to act (which could potentially lead her into trouble), so I cannot entirely fault her because she is a compassionate person. I also love those moments when she tries to one-up Byrnes, and tries to make him squirm. She talks back to him, and it’s awesome. She pretty much kicks ass, and I love that she is not afraid to stand up for herself and her kind. She is so wonderfully bold, and YESSS to a heroine actually, literally kicking ass with her physical strength and using her own brain.

On the other hand, Byrnes is great too. He can be frustrating at times, especially when he tries to deny his feelings for Ingrid, but he is still a good guy. I love seeing him trying to solve the mystery. He is a lone wolf, but through this mission, he learns that working with a team is not so bad afterall. He is overall honest and fair, even though he can act distant at times. I love how well he ends up treating Ingrid.

As for the side characters, I love them. The group is particularly hilarious when they banter. There are skepticism and distrust among them in the beginning, but they learn to make this work, and they have a lot of humorous love-hate moments, particularly with Kincaid, the grumpy mech. I looooooove seeing Charlie again, being as confident and mischievous as ever. I am definitely excited for his story the most because after the 5th book, I cannot stand to NOT know what’s going to happen with him and Lark. He is more grown up here (I mean it has been 3 years), and so I am looking forward to see him grow up a bit more, and finally get his own book. For those who are waiting as desperately as I am for his book, there is a small scene where he talks about Lark for a bit. I love seeing him here, a bit more mature but still so amusingly charming and funny.

“'I think he’s actually starting to come round,’ he [Charlie] joked quietly. ‘Even wished us luck.’
‘Really?’ Garrett arched a brow.
‘Well, it was more like, ‘Go kill them bloodsuckers, and don’t get bit, ‘cause I aint’ comin’ in after you.'
Ingrid had to grudgingly admit that Charlie gave an impressive impression of Kincaid.”

I am also always SUPER ecstatic to see returning characters/couples, such as Rosa&Lynch, Perry&Garrett, and Leo&Mina. It has been 3 years, so it is good to see everyone again happily married and with babies. My fangirl heart jumped out of my chest when I read their scenes. I especially like seeing Rosa interacting with Ingrid again as friends/non-blood-related family, and Lynch giving mentor-like advice to Byrnes. I just love seeing this great cast of family and friends, book after book as they each navigate their own life.

Overall, like all of the other London Steampunk books, Mission: Improper is filled with an engaging and evolving plotline, sweet romance, and a cast of great, unique characters. It’s just loads of fun to read, especially if you enjoy steampunk – we get a London set in the past, some vampires/paranormal, a little science and technology, etc., with Bec McMaster’s creative take on each aspect. I give it 4 stars because I love it, but still not my favorite out of the London Steampunk series (which goes to Rosa&Lynch’s story in the 3rd book). In addition, I will like to give props to the inclusion of LGBT for certain side characters in this book. I enjoy it, and I am certain I am going to read every future London Steampunk series book because I am already entirely invested in this world and these characters.

The next book comes out in 2017. We see the beginning work in this book for the couple for the next book, which I already ship because their scene together is simultaneously funny and cute. The next book couple is:

ARC REVIEW:

If you are a fan of Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk series, hang on to your Kindles because you will love this ride. We first meet Caleb Byrnes in the earlier series. We know he’s controlled, disciplined, and loves to solve puzzles. His previous encounter with verwulfen, Ingrid Miller, left him tied up in knots, and he is eager for payback. They are partnered together to investigate the strange disappearance of groups of people, blue bloods, humans, and others. Given the fragile nature of the relatively new coalition government, these crimes pose a threat to national security. This is post-revolution of the Queen’s consort who was committed to maintaining a blue-blood-privileged society. The Queen’s government, in contrast, is trying to bring equality to all the different factions and move toward a democracy. This government must show that they keep the citizenry safe.

I found the beginning of this book a little slow going, not because the writing is slow but because I had to reacquaint myself with the characters from the previous series. Because it has been awhile since I read my last London Steampunk book, I found myself scrambling to remember the names and relevance of characters. As the first book in a new series, it can and does stand alone. It is not necessary to be familiar with the characters, but I want to map their relationship to last series.

As an adventure, the story is suspenseful with lots of political intrigue. There is a conspiracy led by a new breed of blue blood extremists that are intent on bringing down the Queen’s government. They are faster, stronger, and more terrifying than the former blue bloods. Yup, this is going to be a fun ride.

I'm so glad this series continued as although I liked how things ended in the last book in so many ways it brought things to a close. The problem for me was what could happen next? The Queen had finally taken back control but how would things progress? Plus there were characters who I still had questions about so it was with great delight ( OK perhaps some fan girl squealing !) that I sat down to read this story that transports the reader just three years down the line . Yes there have been huge strides made but not everyone is delighted with the changes gradually rolling out and in this book we start to see threads unraveling and conspiracies coming to light.
This book does focus on Byrnes the blue blood and Ingrid the verwulfen woman and frankly their chemistry is off the charts. However there is a score to settle between them which is fun to read about but it's seeing the ensemble cast around then that really tickled my fancy. Add in the dangerous new foes they are facing and as people go missing it's high time for answers. Of course that means chasing down those members of the Echelon who are dissatisfied with recent events which puts the emotionally unavailable Byrnes and the passionate but haunted Ingrid in pretty dire situations. Yes it's fair to say the streets of London are far from safe!
There is a lot happening here with very nasty bad guys in play. The descriptions and words used just pulled me in. In fact about half way through the this story the author touched on a subject that's hard for me to read and her prose was spot on and for me very poignant . Then the story continues at breakneck speed so no time to wallow just feel! There are some answers given here but the mystery will continue which means more books, yippee! Plus remember those supporting characters? Well I'm champing at the bit to find out what they all get up to next.

Hmpf! I'm wondering why I keep reading Bec McMaster's books and end up not really liking them, or rather liking them and not liking them. Does that even make sense?

Well, her writing is compelling and she can build up a good mystery and pursue it throughout the series. My main complaints remain though. The books (and this one is a spin-off of the London Steampunk series and many of the previous characters have still a significant role here) are too modern. And I'm not even speaking of tracking devices put under the skin of a protagonist, or the Mission Impossible like action scenes. I had this on my mind:

description

It's the very modern tone of the characters. For all intents and purposes, they could be placed in a 21st century setting and I wouldn't really see much of a difference. They'd sound a tad bit more stuffy but that's about it, really.

The romance is lacking and there are two reasons for that. 1. The plot takes quite some space, and 2. the continuous push/pull of McMaster's characters is tiring. There's too much of guarding their own feelings, too much supposedly blasé behaviour. At least always for the first half of the books. When the characters come to the stage where they reveal their true emotions, I've already missed the point of connecting to them and their romance.

In a way, the London Steampunk series has a similar effect on me as JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I read it because I'm intrigued by the world that the author has built; I like seeing the other characters' reappearances; and I'm definitely hooked to the mystery. But the romance falls flat for me. It's not that I don't like the characters individually. It's just that their romance is boring and leaves me with a description
feeling.

When I feel that the romantic interludes stand in the way of the mystery plot, I know I'm not reading it for the romance anymore.

Anyway, I'm rounding this up because of the mystery. Man, I really want to know who is behind the conspiracy. Oh, and what about Malloryn, Gemma and who the hell is Obsidian??? Might be just me but I have a feeling we may have a proper anti-hero here, and yes, yes, yes, wouldn't that be great.

I was so lost in the characters of Bec McMaster's spin-off steampunk series that I want to read more. You can take that statement two ways.

First, all the characters are interesting and full of personality, quirks, physical punch and intriguing backstories. I just want to sit on the fringes and watch the Company of Rogues work and play. They are that absorbing.

Second, I was really, truly lost. Mission: Improper is billed as the first book in The Blue Blood Conspiracy series. Having read the first book and one novella of McMaster's London Steampunk series, I was introduced to her imaginative, expansive and thrilling universe. It wasn't enough. Many, many characters who play fairly integral roles in this spin-off series are main characters in the latter books of the London Steampunk series. I felt a little like I was sitting in a revisionist history class; I just didn't have the full story, and it hampered my understanding.

Ingrid Miller and Caleb Byrnes, who are both skilled at tracking and fighting, are partnered together in this new steampunk police force that tackles nefarious creatures and villains. The backstory to these two was immediately titillating, and I knew I was in for a fun ride. Audacious is the word I would use to describe verwulfen Ingrid. Payback is the motivation for blue blood Byrnes. Along the way, the out of control attraction these two feel develops into something more. Quintessentially Victorian repartee, filled with clever little asides, draws you even more to these two tantalizing characters. As the peril grows ever more serious, so does their regard for one another.

"He was going to throttle her. Slowly. Or maybe kiss her. He hadn't quite decided."

And then there is Ingrid: "Provoking you does get me all hot and bothered."

This story is all about two extremely competitive and stubborn people falling in love. Toss in vampire, aristocracy, atmospheric tunnels, thrilling chase scenes, a mystery inside of a mystery, and gadgets that could have been invented by MI6's Q - if he had been born in the 19th century -and you have quite the tale. Never boring. Always fun. Plus McMaster has penned some of the best "kiss me before I head into danger" vignettes ever breathlessly uttered.

That is why I am totally lost in these characters. I can't wait to go back and read all about the stories teased from the rest of the London Steampunk series and discover what is coming next for Ava and Kincaid as they continue to unravel the Blue Blood Conspiracy.

As a huge fan of Bec McMaster's London Steampunk series, I was sorry to see it come to an end, especially since I felt a certain pair of characters had not yet had their story told (I'm looking at you, Charlie and Lark), and the story world was so rich with opportunities for more novels. My prayers were answered when Mission: Improper was announced, the first book in a spin-off series set in the same world with new leading characters and featuring appearances from some of our favorite characters from the previous series!

Mission: Improper begins with Nighthawk Caleb Byrnes--a member of the supernatural police force-- receiving a summons to a mysterious meeting. He arrives to find that himself, three other blue bloods (including Charlie Todd, yay!), a mech, and the only woman to truly ever get under his skin, Ingrid Miller, a verwulfen, have been carefully selected by the Duke of Malloryn to investigate a series of murders and disappearances that seem to be designed to incite a riot. It's been three years since the revolution that took down the blue blood elite and placed all supernaturals on equal footing, but a shadowy group has emerged that is bent on bringing down the new order and returning to the old ways. If that wasn't already enough, there are vampires on the loose, controlled by a new and deadly creature the likes of which none of them have encountered before. Begrudgingly partnered together, Caleb and Ingrid will have to use all of their skills to unearth the players in this new game, uncovering a conspiracy far more ambitious and deep-rooted than first suspected, while fighting an intense attraction to each other as they race the clock to stop a group of madmen from destroying the world as they know it.

I so loved being back in this story world! And I love the characters. As usual, McMaster has created a deep and dimensional hero and heroine; both are brave, smart, and tough, yet at times vulnerable, and both have overcome heartbreaking childhood trauma, building up protective walls while still allowing their hearts to be generous and hopeful. Watching them work together on this case was a joy. My only real complaint here is that the romance takes a little bit of a backseat in this story, and that's mainly because a lot of things have to be set up in this first book to form the foundation of the entire series. which, like its predecessor, will feature a running plot throughout all of the books. And while I found it refreshing that Caleb and Ingrid actually talked to each other about what they were thinking and feeling rather than keep it to themselves, resulting in the angst and misunderstandings so common in romances these days, I got to a point where I just wanted them to shut up and do it already! And after they finally did, I wanted more of them together before the story raced along to its conclusion. And the epilogue, which takes place in the future and was satisfying of itself, made me wish I'd gotten to see what happened between the end of the story and that point. But since these two should feature in future books, I'm hoping I will get a chance to.

I'm sure Mission: Improper is intended to serve as a stand-alone for those who haven't read the previous series, and some backstory is included, but you just won't be able to grasp the full meaning of who the different species are, how they relate to each other, and what's at stake if you haven't read the other books. (And they're so good that you really should go and read them first!) Mission: Improper is an action-packed start to a new series in a beloved story world, introducing some new characters on both sides of the conspiracy that I am looking forward to getting to know better in future books. I am anxiously awaiting book two, The Mech Who Loved Me.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Bec McMaster is hands down my favourite PNR author. I LOVE every single one of her books. Which considering I'm a picky bitch is pretty amazing! That being said I was very wary about this book. See, I wanted Byrnes with Ava and I was hella pissed when I found out he wasn't being paired with her. I went through all the stages of grief, except acceptance. Which I was pretty sure I would never get to. I didn't see how I could ever love Byrnes with someone who wasn't Ava. I can now say not only have I got to acceptance I'm actually glad it worked out the way it did. Not only do I love Byrnes with Ingrid but I love Ava with

That being said this is the first book by her that I've ever not rated five stars. I seriously loved it as always but there were a few things that made me enjoy this one less than I usually do.

I very quickly stopped being bothered by the fact that he wasn't with Ava in this book BUT I really, really wish that because they because weren't going to be a couple that she had just had them both have strictly friendship feelings for each other. I hated that Ava had unrequited romantic feelings for him. I hate anything even remotely triangley and even though this technically wasn't a triangle it felt like one to me because of Ava's feelings for him. I hate reading about unrequited feelings especially when I had originally wanted Ava with him. It felt a little like salt in my wound. It also makes me feel like I might not enjoy her story as much because I'll be thinking I have faith though that McMaster will make me believe

The other thing I wasn't as keen on was the reason behind Byrnes chasing Ingrid. I only read books that have lads who chase the heroine. I refuse to read any other kind of hero! I love chasers, and while Byrnes was a total chaser, he wasn't exactly the type I love. In the beginning he was chasing her to get in her to bed to get her out of his system and because he likes the game of chasing. I like my chasers to chase the heroine because he wants to keep her forever! Thankfully the whole "I just want you out my system" didn't drag out for too long. And he was SERIOUSLY obsessed with her. And it was pretty clear he was just kidding himself when he was thinking it was all just a game. So I still loved him despite all that but I would have definitely preferred him to be completely all in from the start.

Okay, so now that's my reasons for it getting a star less than McMaster would usually get from me I'm going to go on to the gushing!

The writing as always was phenomenal. Seriously I get so sucked into this world she creates. I feel like I experience everything the characters experience. The whole thing just becomes alive for me. The characters in this one again like always were so fleshed out and had so many layers. None of them are cliches. This book reinforced why she is seriously my favourite PNR author. I believe in the relationships she writes because they feel so real and honest.

Byrnes was so freaking sexy and sweet! Even though I said his type of chasing wasn't my usual favourite type I still loved seeing him chase Ingrid. He was relentless and hot and sweet about it. I loved him seeing him learn to be vulnerable in front of her. I loved how he enjoyed being looked after and cared by Ingrid. They were also explosively hot together. Like, wow.

Ingrid broke my heart. She was so vulnerable under that tough shell and I just wanted her to be happy so much. She was such a surviver to have gone through everything she had and still become the strong caring (though she often hides the caring) woman that she did. She deserved her happy ending so much.

I honestly loved these two together. I think they brought out the best in each other. I seriously love big tough characters learning to be vulnerable in front of each other. Their teasing banter was top notch. I loved seeing how Ingrid could make serious Byrnes show a playful side. He was so intense all the time which was amazing but the playful side was just as hot. I know I've said this already but man was he swoony with how relentless he pursued her.

I don't want to say too much about the action side of the story because I don't want to spoil it for anyone but I will say that it was bloody terrifying at times! I was on the edge of my seat so many times! Again this world becomes so alive for me when I'm reading it! I got shivers.

I'm gonna finish by saying I am SO excited for the next book!

Anyway, everyone should be reading these books. You seriously can't beat her obsessed heroes. They are to die for.

I'm away to reread all the swoony bits!

If Mission: Improper was a TV show, Ingrid and Caleb would have been the will they/won't they pair that kept viewers waiting for all 15 seasons. Luckily Bec McMaster doesn't delay the gratification of seeing these two give in to each other for that long - this is still a romance, after all! It's also a believable romance: Caleb and Ingrid are a great couple with a ton of chemistry. He's the logical one, she's the emotional one, but they're both superhuman fighters with an interest in social justice, so their attraction feels very organic.

That said, this book suffers from what we call "First Book in a Series Syndrome," and it spends a lot of time setting up the next few books with a ton of information to whet our appetites for the whole cast of characters. While we are excited about the other books, we would have loved to spend more time with the central couple of Mission: Improper!

35-word summaries:

Meg: We’re back in London after the vampire revolution that brought down the prince consort, and we’re excited. This is a messy book that sets up a lot but doesn’t give Ingrid and Byrnes enough time.

Laine: I completely and totally bought Ingrid and Caleb as super destined and too hot to handle, but the baby-crazies combined with seventy-five billion extraneous sub plots made this more of set up than a romance.

This is going to be a lousy opinion, simply because I had no words except to say how much I LOVED this book.

Plotline under spoiler tag so I can remember what happened this time around...

She did it again. One of my favorite authors just gave me another 5* read this year. I felt hangover from how good this book was. I LOVED the banters between Byrnes and Ingrid. The sparks, the chemistry, THE SENSUAL TENSION!! I felt like I was hanging on the edge of my seat and consumed the words that they exchanged!! It was smart, witty, sexy, and judging by the status updates that I had, this book just owned me.

The only thing that I felt unsure about was the epilogue.

However, in a grand scheme of things, it was just tiny miniscule niggle. It didn't mean a lot because I loved this book too much to let it bother me.

added after my first re-read:

I stand by everything I said about this wonderful gem the first time I read it... honestly... I forgot how amazing this story is... what a wonderful job it does introducing us to the new mystery, making us fall in love with a whole group of characters... *sighs happily* for all the informations you can possibly need, just keep on reading to check out my full review :)

ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review :)

I just finished reading this book... literally like minutes ago and I am speechless... I simply cannot even begin to put into words how much I LOVED this book... the main couple, the story, the mysteries... and those amazing surprises along the way... give me a day or two to gather all my thoughts and put them into words and I will have for you a full review very soon :) *sighs happily* best spent saturday in a while ;)

edited to add my full review :)

I got my hands on the ARC of this amazing story from the lovely author herself in exchange for an honest review and I couldn't be more happy about it :) can you say amazing? because I certainly will... several times in this review actually... ;) this book... *sighs happily* this book was absolutely fantastic... :) I'm actually having troubles putting all my thoughts and feelings into words to really show you how in love I am with this series... and those characters... and just everything about it :) so how about I will start with a little bit of explanation to all of you who might not know Bec and her amazing books :)

So if you are brand new to this author, then you should now that this book may be a beginning of a series, but it's a beginning of a spin-off series :) so I highly recommend you to read London steampunk before you dive into this one :) do you absolutely have to do it to enjoy this story? that is a very good question... ;) and I will try to answer that as best as I can :) so first, let me tell you a bit about the world itself :) it's a steampunk / paranormal series, set in an alternate version of Victorian London, where society is ruled by blue bloods... they are stronger than humans and need blood to survive :) but do not call them vampires... those are something else entirely... besides the ruling group of aristocrats, because the craving virus that turns a person into a blue blood is given only to chosen ones, there are of course humans, but besides them, we have two more groups I want to mention :) verwulfen, who are close to shape shifters but not exactly... they are also much stronger with heightened senses and quite a few more surprises... ;) and there are also mechs... humans with mechanical limbs or organs, forced to work in enclaves to repay for those pieces of them, and treated worse than slaves... trust me, that is just the shortest version I can give you, because there are much more details and very interesting things to know about all of those groups, but if I would want to tell you all about it not only we would be here all day, but I would also spoil you some very interesting details you get to know further in the books :) what you need to know is that the series starts when blue bloods are the most powerful force in London and everyone else is treated like... well, let's just say the word slaves comes to mind again... and that first series, even though each story concentrates on another couple, follows a bigger story arch that spans all of the books and comes to a big conclusion in that last, fifth, book :) and let's just say that this story arch is about people, and by people I mean everyone else besides blue bloods, who finally have enough... but I can say no more about it ;) there is also a group of characters that appear in all of those books, and I highly recommend you to read them in order, so as to avoid some shocking spoilers ;) so now that I told you a bit about that first series let me try to explain you the connections to this spin-off series :) I would recommend you to read that first series if you are new to this world before reading this book, because even though there are really good explanations about characters... and it's fantastic, because for those of us who read that first series a long time ago, not to mention the amount of books one might have read since then, one might remember very little details... ;) and since some of those characters appeared before, it was good to have a reminder here and there from where we know them ;) it definitely jogged my memory... I swear, throughout the first half of the book my major reaction was "oooohhhh... now I remember him/her..." ;) but when it comes to world building, sentences explaining it work rather as reminders of things you already should know, than as explanations for a first time reader... I'm not saying that you wouldn't understand it, but it would definitely take you some time, and you might miss some very cool connections and other details because of your lack of knowledge about previous books :) so hopefully I convinved you by now to give those first books a try :) at least read "Kiss of steel" and see for yourselves how amazing it is :) it's gonna be soooo worth your time :) then I'm sure you'll dive into the rest of those books immediately ;)

Ok, now I am going to share some of the details about this newest book, so if you haven't read the first series yet, please avert your eyes and leave immediately because there is no way that I can discuss the book, withouth spoiling some major things from the original stories :) last warning, SPOILERS ahead :) ok, so for all of you who stayed, this book starts three years after the events in the last book :) prince consort is dead, and humans, mech and verwulfen rights have been established to protect them much more than it was before :) but of course not everyone is pleased with this new order of the world... dun dun duuuunnn... sorry, but I felt that this moment needed a dramatic music interruption ;) ok, going back to the topic :) this book does an amazing job of not only showing us the romance between our main couple... more about them in a second ;) but also starting a whole new story arch that blew me away :) seriously people, after loving that first series, I was a bit hesitant going into this book, because I wasn't sure if the idea would be good... if I will be invested in this story and those characters as much as I was with those first books... but my oh my... was I worried for nothing :) because you guys... it was bloody brilliant ;) pun totally intended ;) this new story... all the mysteries... both new and familiar characters... GAH!!! it was amazing :) I cannot wait to know more about... well, about everything ;) because there are glimpses and teasers about quite a few interesting things in this first story... and even though sometimes it's just a scene or two, it's done in such a masterful way that I immediately wanted to know more... ;)

So now let me tell you something about our main couple ;) both Byrnes and Ingrid were secondary characters in that first series, so I knew them a bit before :) but it was such a pleasure to get to know more about them : ) Byrnes is a blue blood... trust me, there is a bigger story and explanation there, but it's too complicated to get into with just a sentence or two here, so I will leave you all that to discover in the book ;) but he is a sort of unique detective :) again, it's the simplest way I can explain him, so let's just go with it :) he's charming and talkative but it's also a way for him to avoid deeper feelings and getting too attached to people... there is of course a reason for that behaviour, but I won't spoil it for you here ;) Ingrid on the other hand is a verwulfen :) she's much more impulsive, although she tries her best to control her temper :) she will do everything to fight for the freedom she was finally granted those three years ago... :) they actually met before the events of this book... there was a bet involved, about a year earlier, that ended in a very... let's just say Ingrid won and left Byrnes in a very... peculiar position ;) that is all the details I can share with you right now ;) so after that year she thinks he's still looking for a way to get his revenge and it's partially true... the other part is that she was haunting his thoughts and got under his skin and he simply could not forget about her... so now that they are working together in a team, more about that in a second :) he finally has the opportunity to act on it ;) and what can I say... *fans herself* ;) the witty banter between them, not to mention the off-the-charts attraction was very entertaining to read :) I loved to see how both of them were slowly coming to terms that there is more than just heat between them... there were a few scenes that were so cute to read... ;) not to mention that the beautiful epilogue totally made me cry... don't worry, in a good way :)

Besides the main couple there are of course quite a few important secondary characters :) and this is my clever way of telling you more about that special team I mentioned before :) because not only Byrnes and Ingrid were invited to join a group that will be handling some very mysterious cases that has been happening around the city in the last few months... in that team there are also Charlie, Ava, Kincaid and Gemma :) they are lead by duke of Malloryn and Isabella, but I will concentrate on the members of the team instead of the leadership ;) Charlie and Ava are actually another blue bloods we met before :) both of them have quite a past of their own, and I couldn't be more happy to see them here, because I'm assuming that they will have a much bigger role in this series :) and I already can't wait :) Gemma is also a blue blood, and a new character... or at least I think she's new, becaue I have no recollection about her from previous books... the same goes for Kincaid, who is a mech... I don't remember him at all, so even if they appeared in a scene or two before, for me they were new :) all of them have a history... and after seeing some glimpses into their pasts, not to mention some fascinating teasers about possible future stories with each and every one of them... all I can say is that I cannot wait for future installments in this series :) if I could, I would read all of them at the same time, because I am curious about each and every one member of that team :) and those little teasers only made it worse :) but I can say that at the end of this book you get a blurb of the second story in this series, and... *sighs happily* I can't wait to read about THAT couple :) I won't spoil you who will be the hero and heroine of that story, but I have a feeling it's going to be a great one :) not to mention that some of our favourite couples from previous books make an appearance here and there, and those scenes will definitely mean more if you read previous books... so that's just another reason to do it :)

People... this book was absolutely amazing :) I hope I convinced you to try it out, or start at the beginning if you are brand new to this author, because if you don't know the awesomeness that is Bec McMaster and her writing style, you are seriously missing out :) I am truly amazed... AMAZED I tell ya ;) how brilliantly she went with this spin-off series :) it's based in the same world we know, and involves a lot of characters we already fell in love with... but at the same time it introduces a bunch of brand new ones that capture your attention from the start and make you want more immediately :) it shines a light on secondary characters from that previous series and proves that they have so much potential :) the writing style is... just... I have no words for how great it is... :) the ability to mix together not only the beautiful romance between Ingrid and Byrnes, but also adding a whole set of teasers and informations for this second big story arch... without making you feel overwhelmed by all those details... making you curious about characters you read about in only two scenes... it's an incredible talent :) I was blown away :) maybe because it's been months since I read one of her books, I just forgot how fantastic she is... so trust me people and do yourselves a favour... give it a try and discover everything I wrote you about and much more in another fantastic book by a phenomenal author :) or if you are new, then go back and start with the story that started it all :) happy reading either way :)

XOXO

MISSION: IMPROPER is the first book in the London Steampunk spin off series by Bec McMaster. As a huge fan of the original series, I really don’t know why it took me so long to read this series. Set three years after the events in STEAM AND SILK, readers are once again submerged into the wonderful world that McMaster has created.

First off, I have to talk about the world because this is honestly one of my favorite combinations. It has everything from Paranormal Romance to Steampunk elements. If you know me, then you know that I really, really dislike Steampunk as a genre in general. It’s probably my least favorite genre to read for some reason. In order for me to enjoy it, it has to have a mix of something else like for example PNR or YA. These books by McMaster are honestly one of the only Steampunk books I enjoy so that’s saying something.

I’ve read in other people’s reviews that they felt that the romance was instalove in this book. I don’t think that’s the case. The hero, Caleb Brynes, and the heroine, Ingrid Miller, do have immediate chemistry but that’s because they also have a past. After some intense tension between the two, Ingrid literally tied Brynes to a bed and left him there. The memory has soured her image and now he’s looking for revenge. He now gets his chance when they are set to work together again.

Like I said, there’s sizzling tension but it’s not instalove. Especially since they go on to argue a lot more in the rest of the book. It’s a heated read and I really loved experiencing the tension between these characters. At first, I even thought that there might be something between Brynes and Ava but that idea was quickly pushed aside once Ingrid stepped into the picture. They were simply made for each other.

In addition to the epic worldbuilding and the fabulous romance, there’s also the amazing writing. I LOVE McMaster’s writing style. It’s descriptive enough that it gives you some details, but it doesn’t drone on to the point where it gets tedious. She definitely has a way with words and found that I really enjoyed this book from start to finish.

If you’ve never read McMaster before, this series reminds me of Cassandra Clare’s The Mostal Instruments series (but an adult version) and a little bit of Sherlock Holmes. So if you’re a fan of any of those two, you’ll definitely love this series. You don’t need to read the London Steampunk series to enjoy this one, but you will get references to past characters throughout.

I’ve learned my lesson —Never snooze on Bec McMaster. She’s a must read!

This book was the perfect palate cleanser!

There's mystery, there's mayhem, there's blood, and (of course) there's a romance featuring a blue-blood (think vampire-lite) and a verwulfen (think werewolf-lite). Apparently these two met a year before and have had it in for each other ever since.

I love the whole "enemies to lovers" trope, which is where this kind of stems from, but it never quite got the whole "enemy" part down. We're told a bunch of times that the MC blue-blood Caleb "Byrnes" is cold, aloof, and lacking a heart but it doesn't really come across on page that way to me. He always seems pretty damn passionate about everything, especially when it came to Ingrid, our female verwulfen lead. I really liked her. She was pretty fierce and never one to back away from a fight, though of course she had to be rescued by our main guy quite a few times because of it (insert mild eye roll here.) But this book was all in good fun and sets up the series really nicely. I'm super interested in Gemma and Obsidian! I need to know what's going on there!!

The main drawback: even though the description says it's the first in a series, you basically get dropped into the middle of a lot of shit going on with a lot of people you have no idea about. Even with that going against it, by the end of the book I was able to get a good feel for the backstories of the previous players and get kinda sorta caught up on the current political atmosphere. I'm not saying you can't start with this book, because I totally did, but I think it's probably beneficial to start with her London Steampunk series first, though I think only characters from Book #3 and Book #4 make appearances here (as per the book blurbs anyway.)

Anyway, overall this was a really fun and easy read, and I totally plan on reading the next book!

I have not read many Steampunk books. I really liked Caleb and Ingrid. The book was very interesting with vampires and blue bloods and all. I think the book was heavy on the romance side as well but overall I enjoyed the book. I would not recommend anyone one under 18 reading due to some sexual content but I did not mind it because there was not very much in this book. I may have to read book two to see what happens next!

London Steampunk will remain one of my favorite series and I was feeling somewhat blue that it was over. Lo and behold, we have a new season with an action-packed and suspenseful new series arc and focusing on several new characters in the much beloved world. Please don't let the fact that this one set on the shelf a while fool you. I have been more than eager to get back into this world blending paranormal, steampunk, suspense, and romance.

Mission: Improper began with an assembling of a crack team and their mission is to delve into mysterious mass disappearances and the apparent effort by someone to undercut the new government administration. It became obvious when the colorful group of characters on this team were revealed that there would be several sizzling stories to watch for.

This one hones in on ice cold Nighthawks' Investigator Caleb Byrnes, a rogue blue blood (think vampire) with a bitter past and a determination to keep himself strictly non-committed save to his work. And, the other part of the pair is hot-blooded vervolfen (werewolf) contracted independent investigator, Ingrid Miller. This pair has an acrimonious past and there is definitely unfinished business between the pair. Between facing off against a cunning group who have more than one plot going and some deep intrigue to heightens the danger and facing off with each other, they are kept pretty busy.

Now, I definitely had a good time with all the elements that made up this story and loved it as a whole. But, oddly, it was a struggle through the early chapters to keep my attention. Even chores were more compelling. I won't say it was boring, but I had a distinct need for it to get going already. Some of it can be attributed to the typical first book in series set up and intro stuff which is fine, but a lot of it was actually the early nonsense going on between Ingrid and Byrnes. Totally attracted, totally in denial, afraid to trust, lusting, competitive, and so on which led to several chapters of sniping at each other, one upping each other and nothing really happening in the romance or much of anything else. About half of all that would have probably been just the right amount to set up their romance style and personalities.

Which, speaking of this pair, they sparkled when they were out in the field working. Things got intense and they got themselves and each other out of tight spots. There were a handful of good fight scenes which I love about this series and the women are just as capable as the men whether its brains and cunning or actual fighter like Ingrid. When they finally got past the childish sniping, this pair were fun to watch two courageous people cautiously pick their way through love's mine field. They didn't immediately fall into bed and the build up of sexual tension was good. I was really cheering for them knowing they both had terrible childhoods and didn't think they could ever have a real relationship for different reasons.

Alongside Byrnes and Ingrid, other storylines that will blossom in future books rose up and I definitely want all those stories. As is her forte, McMasters delivers a clever and worthy enemy who is still in the shadows and has a strong group of villainous allies who give the good guys and gals a run for their money. I look forward to seeing what comes next since this mission was just the opener.

So, this new season of stories is off to a grand start. I can't wait to pick up book two. Those who are wondering if Steampunk is their thing and come from a paranormal romance loving background would probably find the London Steampunk books as a great gateway to the genre. And, the reverse is true for steampunk lovers wanting to try their hand at paranormal romance.

I've been meaning to pick this book up all year, however, it took Annie recommending this on a Pick It For Me challenge for me to actually read it. I am glad I did, I already really like McMaster's London Steampunk series and I was glad that I got a chance to dive back into the richly detailed world that she had created.

In the Blue Blood Conspiracy series we see the world post-revolution. Humans, Mechs and some Blue Bloods have killed the Prince Consort who was controlling the human queen and now the equality amongst all races is coming into force. However, there are some who prefer the old regime, of the Blue Bloods ruling over everyone and taking whatever they desire. A crack team has been put together, featuring all the races; human, blue blood, verwulfen and mechs to stop this conspiracy from bringing down this week earned peace.

In the first book we Caleb Byrnes, a Nighthawk and Ingrid Miller a verwulfen must try and work together to find out who is causing a series of incidents that's bring unrest to the population, could they all be related? However, Byrnes and Ingrid have worked together before and it resulted in Byrnes being tied, naked, to his bed unable to free himself and Ingrid disappearing. But, they must learn to work together if they are going to succeed in preventing a massive catastrophe.

I don't think this series can be read as a standalone. There is too much history involved , too many characters from the London Steampunk series, as well as an assumption that you understand the world in which this is set in. I imagine if you start reading without a little knowledge about what happened previously to lead to the rebellion in a series that very wonderfully describes this new world then it could be confusing. But, the London Steampunk series is well worth reading so please go and pick it up if you haven't already!

But, assuming you have read the main series, this book was great! What I liked most about it was the mystery itself and trying to decipher what is going on. What seems on the surface to be some malcontents within the high ranking Blue Bloods develops into something much more sinister and complicated. I can't wait to read on and find out who is behind this deadly plot and why. As for the romance, for me, this wasn't as strong as the mystery. It took me a while to warm up to Byrnes and found some of the other characters more interesting. I did really like the fiery Ingrid though, she was fierce and intelligent, which melted Byrnes' cool exterior.

A great start to this spin-off series and I can't wait to read more.

So started reading this in my work breaks yesterday and ended up eagerly reading it in any spare time I had, finishing early today.

This book was a good suprise, the characters and story drew me in from the onset, loved the character of Ingrid and her initial interactions with Caleb, if you want a strong heroine Ingrid is the one for you. The chemistry and banter between the two was fun to read, and one of my favourite parts of the book (and what pushed this to 4 stars).

My focus wavered slightly about 40% into it but then regained strength. The characters are well rounded and the plot overall engaging. Although one or two small moments where I wanted less secondary characters. I've enjoyed being introduced to the world McMaster has imagined, but will be going to her previous series so I can gain a richer understanding of the world and society she has created.

I’ve always loved Byrnes and Ingrid put them together and it is fun banter and sizzling chemistry. Byrnes is that lone wolf type detective who pisses off most of his colleagues, Ingrid is a passionate former resistance member turned freelance detective.

The new series developments are pretty intense and as usual I wasn’t sure how things could resolve themselves.

I loved seeing some of the previous characters including some sweet domestic scenes with the Current & former nighthawk crew

Loved it!

Bec McMaster does it again! I am so impressed with this author. She does an incredible job of building a compelling fantasy world with familiar creatures but giving them new life with a fresh twist. I loved this mysterious, intriguing plot of hunting down mysterious killers, but LOVED the chemistry and heat that Byrne and Ingrid had. They are both so fiery and passionate and there was this simmering animosity between them for the first part of the book that was delicious.

It's been sometime since I've read some Bec McMaster. Am not disappointed. Am looking forward to finishing this series.

In the three years since the rebellion, the queen has instituted reforms that give more power to the humans, Mechs, and non-blue bloods, while diminishing the control of the Echelon. This isn’t sitting well with some, and there have been a series of unsolvable crimes aiming to lessen the queen’s effectiveness as ruler. The Duke of Malloryn has taken it upon himself to solve the mystery and put an end to the terror. He’s assembled a team of elite to find out what group has been causing riots and problems. Caleb Brynes, a highly respected blue blood Nighthawk, and Ingrid Miller, a verwulfen spy have both accepted the challenge of being part of Malloryn’s team.

Mission: Improper is the first book in the new London Steampunk spin-off, taking place three years into the future after the final book in the original series. I love that the author has found a way to continue this exciting series - keeping the same formula of action-packed mystery coupled with sexually-charged romance. The mix of paranormal, alternate history, historic setting, and steampunk mech is unique and engrossing. Mission: Improper expands the established mythology, but not so greatly as to become eye-rolling. The author has added enough new, mixed with a lot of the old, to create a whole new set of concerns for our heroes.

Caleb and Ingrid make for a perfect pair. I admire that the author didn’t toss unnecessary drama in their way, but let the story and characters dictate the speed and direction of the romance. They don’t have an easy path, and I like that both are uncertain about giving of themselves fully (emotionally, not physically). Each has a jaded history that puts wariness into their decision making, yet they also want to make sure not to hurt the other. It’s honest and raw emotion like this, that won me over:

“I am going to pursue you, Ingrid Miller, with the intention of never letting you go. So fair warning…”
“It's no longer about winning your body, Ingrid. When I finish these challenges, I intend to win your heart.”

Ms. McMaster creates some of the best romances out there: always steamy and sexy while simultaneously emotionally gripping. However, it’s not just the love story that keeps me coming back again and again. Every story centers on some sort of mystery and huge investigation. I become completely captivated as the characters try to figure out the puzzle. This time is no different. Mission: Improper follows Malloryn’s group as they uncover a huge conspiracy, and I believe they have only skimmed the surface in this first book.

Mission: Improper is an excellent, fascinating start to Ms. McMaster’s new London Steampunk: The Blue Blood Conspiracy series. I was completely captivated by the mysterious new baddies and their abilities. I like that there was subterfuge within subterfuge and layer upon layer, and we’ve only just begun to peel back that first layer. I cannot wait to discover more.

There’s so much I enjoyed about this book! For one, the cover is eye catching and considering I don’t usually pay attention, that’s saying something. And as weird as it sounds, I had The League of Extraordinary Gentleman playing in the background of my mind when I read the opening chapters...

Two, I love the characters. Even the villains had brains. Pick one-male or female, good or bad-they are all written as intelligent, passionate, humorous, sarcastic, sensual beings with a variety of colorful backgrounds, but there is something about every one of them I could relate to.

Three, the storyline. The intrigue, the action, the conspiracies, even the politics are creatively written and highly engaging, keeping me totally invested in the outcome.

And then there’s the romance! The obvious tension, the explosive chemistry, the steamy attraction..sigh... and the way Ingrid and Caleb’s relationship was stripped raw, it laid bare emotional skeletons, but I liked how it brought a different level of intimacy to things and upped the ante of their future together.

Three years after Of Silk and Steam ended, Mission: Improper is a spin off series that’s just as dazzling as it’s predecessor! Was there anything I didn’t like about the book? Um, obviously no :)
I just spent a week inhaling the London Steampunk series and now its Blue Blood Conspiracy spin off. Now I’m off to read The Mech Who Loved Me.. and part of me feels dreadful, because when I finish I’ll be in withdrawals eagerly anticipating the next installment!!!
