Full-Frontal Nerdity

Rate this book
Adulting is hard; laugh and learn. If you've ever wondered what astrophysics can teach you about the dating pool or how quantum particles can show you how to ignore the haters, look no further. From a Nerd-of-All-Trades comes Full-Frontal Nerdity, a collection of personal essays about applying all that “useless” book learning toward the more practical pursuits of life, love, and releasing your inner quantum.Long before “The Big Bang Theory” made geek scientists cool, there have been Sheldons trying to navigate the world of Pennys. It isn’t always pretty, but it makes for great stories. Full-Frontal Nerdity is a collection of some of those stories—like the time the author got into a debate about the nature of addition with a Time Warner Cable representative or used the many-worlds theory to cheer herself up after a bad day.Full-Frontal Nerdity explores the struggles of being a thinking adult in an often-irrational world, taking inspiration from many subjects—statistics, mythology, physics, poetry, and even the nature of pi—to gain insight into the everyday mysteries of living. What can a decades-old math problem teach us about biological clocks and the pressure to marry? Why is the history of Leap Day a cautionary tale about traditional gender roles and asserting power? How can Bayesian reasoning stop us from writing off a potential partner too early or letting a dud stick around too long?In a series of short, light-hearted pieces, Full-Frontal Nerdity will introduce readers to some fascinating nerdy concepts, explore the more practical lessons to be gleaned from those subjects, and provide a newfound depth of understanding about living, loving, and simply being in a humorously complex world.

My favorite quote sums up the thoughtful, insightful writing that will make you laugh, make you think, and maybe make you scratch your head. Read in sections or read it right through. Something for everyone.

“So, in other words, don’t believe everything people say (especially about themselves), don’t believe everything you think (especially about yourself), and define your own standards for success and happiness. Then work for them. Everyone else can go suck a cherry cordial. "(pg 6, Full Frontal Nerdity)

Do you miss the tv show "Big Bang Theory" like I do? "Full Frontal Nerdity " is the cure. Life is explained in laugh out loud ways using thing like science and mathematics. If someone were to reccomend Sheldon a book on "Big Bang Theory " this would be the book he understood.

I normally read before bed, but couldn't with this book because I was laughing way to much. The one chapter dealing with pets I read over and over once again because it was so funny. You will reread stuff and get a different interptation each time.

I have never read a book quite like this and would like to read more. If the author gave a lecture at a college or book fair, I'm there at the front of the line. I'm a total nerd in love with this book, you will be too.

What a hilarious, thoughtful, clever and truly original piece of literary brilliance! Whether or not you identify as a nerd, or a feminist, or female, or single, or human, Kate Wiswell’s series of essays has something for everyone. It takes a very talented and insightful person to first, make Bayesian theory interesting, and second, apply it to real-life problems! And Kate does this over and over again. Think Tina Fey meets Ted Talk meets science/history/math class meets relatable life lessons on everything from relationships to career to just learning to be happy. Truly a wonderful read. I couldn’t recommend it more.

I don't have a very scientific mind, or at least I didn't think so until I read this book. As the blurb promoting the book proclaimed, this book does indeed prove that smart is the new sexy. By applying science to everyday life, the author shows how to apply scientific principles to affect real world change in many aspects of your life. If the last few years have seemed like infinite madness to you and you're looking for some sense of sanity and control, as well as some super-nerdy, but clever humor, along with an invigorating dose of motivational inspiration, this book is for you. It's a very quick read, but I think it went by quickly because I enjoyed it so much.

I loved this book! While it can be a quick fun read, I chose to take it slower and give each lesson some (deeper) thought. Not each of them spoke to me, but those that did - I had to share that insight with all of my friends!
