This book was infuriating. Miri was super annoying during book 2, but she started this book off with some funny burns toward Rachel which made me think maybe she would be better in this book. Ha. No. She wasn’t.

Miri. Oh Miri Miri Miri. So dumb. And it was annoying how it seemed like she didn’t even learn anything from the last book. She’s still all about saving the world and whatnot and being a dumbass. And she talked about poofing up money to help her help people, which is extremely illogical because she knows that poofing up money means she’s stealing money from somewhere else. Way to “help” out the world you fucking idiot. For the majority of this book I reckon she was under some kind of “emotion amplifying” spell but honestly that’s no excuse since she’s still her dumbass self.

Even worse than Miri was the antagonist in this book, who was so utterly “evil” and overpowered that it was blood boiling. Lianna. Holy shit. What an evil fucking bitch. This is a tween book so maybe I shouldn’t be swearing so much, but honestly I’m against censorship and I’m mad so screw it. She was so much better than Rachel in every way, and it was so enraging having to watch Rachel get constantly schooled.

Now that I’m thinking about it, Rachel was also kind of dumb here too. Like, proper annoying dumb like how I was saying they do in OTHER series, but not this one. Good job author, you blew it. I figured out everything almost instantly, and it was maddening seeing Rachel be too dumb to also figure it out. This series very much turned into a “the characters are dumb and do dumb things in order to further the plot series, which is terrible and annoying.

And how hilarious is it that

I don’t think I disliked this book or anything, it was just… Ugh. Like I said: Infuriating, because of stupid fricken Miri and evil bitch Lianna. It was otherwise fun enough. I’m still going to read the next book, the one from my childhood that started all of this.

Speaking of the next book: Some thief stole the audio book from the library from right under my nose! I was so close to signing out books 3 and 4 at the same time, but I was like “Nah, no one will sign out the last book because no one else has been signing these out so no one else should be on the last book.” Imagine my surprise when I finished reading book 3, I go to sign out book 4, and see that someone else has already beaten me to it!!! Lucky for me that’s the book I own so I don’t have to wait for the thief to finish with the audiobook. It’s still wack, and it’s going to be weird not being able to hear this series and have to read it.

I LOVE books set at summer camps. This was just as fun as I remember the first two books in this series being when I read them as a teen.

This series is just ADORABLE!

I think I said that with each of the reviews of the other two books, didn't I?

So, starting with the plot. Rachel has discovered that she too is a witch. She FINALLY has her own magical powers, except she's really not so good at it yet. Her spells are a mess and they always backfire -- but at least the ability is there! She knows that she can zap up a new outfit, a love spell, or maybe even a bit of invisibility if the need arises.

Well, now Rachel and her sister Miri are going to summer camp -- because, of course, that guy Rachel likes is also going to camp, so that's reason enough for a teenage girl, right? Once Rachel settles in, she conjures up a whole new wardrobe and even a spell to straighten her curls -- both of which end disastrously. So, she coerces Miri to secretly train her in the middle of the night. Maybe by the time camp is over, Rachel will have a boyfriend AND a chance at zapping up a more exciting life.

Everything seems great until things start getting really weird at camp. New girl Liana has an unnatural fascination with Miri, along with an uncanny ability to turn everyone against Rachel. First she steals Liana's friends, then her sister AND her crush. Rachel has no idea why this stranger has given herself such a delibrate task of ruining her life. But now Rachel is on her own to unravel this mystery, while trying to teach herself the patience and discipline required to learn to really use her magical powers.

This was such a cute, breezy read and I'm really surprised at how much I'm enjoying this series. I've read Mlynowski's adult-geared chick lit before and LOVED it, so I guess it's really not THAT much of a shock that I like this series too.

I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a light, youthful, fun, and quirky read full of girly magic, crazy friendships, and of course cute boys. I think there is only one other book in this story, and luckily it's up next on my to-be-read list!

Rachel Weinstein has powers! Finally! And she's growing boobs! Err, a boob. Whatever. She's finally catching up to her younger sister. (How bazzackwards does that sound?)

In this third installment of the Magin in Manhattan series, Rachel and Miri are sent to Camp Wood Lake for the summer. While Rachel is making friends with all the girls that share her bunk, Miri is having trouble fitting in. Rachel is desperately seeking the attention of Raf, but every time they're justabouttokiss something dramatic happens. A flying soccer ball! Bee stings! (Yikes. I would just give up. :P) Anyway, Miri is feeling awfully alone without the company of her older sister, so she makes buddies with Rachel's mortal enemy--Liana, the annoyingly gorgeous girl from the bunk over. It's not just Rachel's sister that's turning over to the enemy side, though; it's all of Rachel's friends. It seems like Liana is betwitching them? Sucks for Rachel because Liana does not appear to like her and is doing anything in her power to make Rachel's time at camp a living hell. To see if Rachel's underdeveloped powers can save her from the predicament she's in at camp, read Spells & Sleeping Bags!

I had a very high expectation for this one that the last one set up for me. This book didn't fail to get there and beyond. Recently I have stopped just handing out five stars to books I enjoyed but I reconsidered and this is one of my first ones in a long time. Along with the first and second one, and I am sure the third one. I am not embarrassed to admit that this book made me laugh about every two pages and sometimes I just COULDN'T stop.

PARENT NOTE: This is Sweet Romance. This means that it has no bad scenes, but it does have cursing, things talked about that can be uncomfortable for someone. But this book is a very nice short romance that is awesomely hilarious. This one is (surprisingly) the most serious one toward the end. I had to read the end to not kill myself with the anticipation. If you have any reserves please read this one before just handing it to your child.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: 13 and up. This has some concepts that would be hard for anyone younger to read about. It also has some spots that could be bad for anyone younger to read about.

SWEARING/LANGUAGE: Some. About every 5-10 pages, sometimes longer/shorter, it depends.

This was an overall good book, in my opinion. There were some parts I didn't like, but overall it was a good book. There was a lot of things happening, like drama-wise, and the author did a good job putting it altogether. Some parts of the story I liked, and some parts I didn't like. For example, that time when Miri hated her sister because she felt like no one liked her anymore, and it was her sister's fault.
Or the time when Rachel's enemy kissed her so-called "boyfreind", right in front of her face. Even though these two events I didn't like, it still made the story interesting.
Some good parts though I loved. For example, at the end of the story, she kissed her boyfriend if I were to assume, since they kissed.
Or the time when Rachel and her sister made up, that was good too.
I am very happy with the entire series. Sarah Mlynowski did a great job of writing them, and I mean that. The only thing I really want is the book to have even more events and drama, and for the book to be longer, but this is just my opinion.
I am currently reading "Bras and Broomsticks", and I can't wait to see how the story goes. I don't have anything else to say in this review, except on thing
Read the book, because it's awesome, but that's just my opinion.
If you don't like the book, then I don't know what to tell you.

These books just keep getting better and better. I really love the character of Rachel, perhaps because I can relate to her so much. Not that I am a witch or have a younger sister or divorced parents, but her struggle to find her place amognst other teenagers, dealing with the trials of high school (and in this book, camp) and attempting to come out the other side somewhat unscathed and with some friends. Having to deal with people out to get you is a fact of life but it may be the most vicious in high school, when we are most vulnerable. Rachel finding out her nemesis at camp is a witch (her cousin the witch actually) makes this story all the more interesting. But what I like the most is how much you can further see how Rachel has grown from the first book. While Liana sees Rachel as whining about her life (which she does at times, but what teenager doesn't?) I see that Rachel has grown leaps and bounds. She made friends easily, persued her relationship with Raf and explored things out of her comfort zone at camp. And it did her worlds of good. Which is why she wanted the same experience for her sister Miri. Unfortunately it takes Miri a bit longer to see how right Rachel is. Being alone is no way to go through life. And at the end of this book it seems the sisters are closer than ever. I can't wait to see what the next book brings.

This is the third book (but hopefully not the last) in the trilogy. Rachel has finally received her magic and is a full-time witch too!! Rachel's and Miri's parents have sent them to camp for the summer which is great because she'll be around Raf for the whole summer! Once she gets to camp, Rachel makes new friends with her bunk-mates and everything is going great (esp. with Raf!!) Miri, however, isn't so lucky and remains an outcast with the girls in her cabin. However, things start to go wrong for Rachel when a new girl named Liana comes to camp. Every time Rachel tries to kiss Raf, something magical happens (but not in a good way), her bunk-mates no longer like her, and even Miri is acting weird. Rachel has to figure out what is going on and if Liana is connected before she is outcasted once again.

I think I liked this book the best--even though I guess who the troublemaker was before it was revealed. It was still pretty funny and a quick read (I think I started it yesterday and finished it today--even though I had to work an eight hour shift). If you want something light to read--this is a good series to try!!

REVIEW: Spells & Sleeping Bags (Magic in Manhattan, #3)
RATING: 3/5

This book was my favorite in the series growing up, and I can definitely see why as I'm rereading it as an adult! I said this when I read Maureen Johnson's latest Truly, Devious book, but novels set at camps, boarding schools, etc. work so well because everyone is trapped in one spot, nearly ensuring character development in the process.

Speaking of characters, Rachel still remains a fairly unlikeable protagonist; a lot of her dialogue is unbearable, and I hate when authors write in colloquialisms most of the time. It was cute to see that Harry Potter movies were still coming out at the time of this novel's publication, but the teen dialogue and the extra letters added to words for emphasis (for example: ye(s)^nth) was not pleasant to read. Miri's character is also not that much better, to be honest. But the transformation from Book 2 is notable, and the tension really increases as you read the book. The ending with Aunt Sasha is also extremely dramatic, philosophical, and made me tear up just a bit. Overall, this book's best moments and worst moments balance them out to an average rating.

Rachel and her sister, Mir, will be spending their summer at Camp Wood Lake. Everything sails peacefully in the beginning, Rachel makes new friends, gets into a relationship with Raf and is having the best time of her life. That is until little by little, obstacles starts flying her way-literally. Liana, Rachel's cousin, is out to get her. She gets all of Rachel's previous friends to back-stab her, steals her boyfriend and sister away from her Liana also blackmails Rachel, forcing them to switch their souls into the others' body. This causes Rachel to learn an important lesson for a lifetime.

This book is great for teenage girls because as teenagers, we often feel insecure in our own bodies. At times, we will wish to be someone else and to have their own life. However, in this book, it teaches you to appreciate your own life. It doesn't matter if you have the best clothes, the perfect hair or the perfect boyfriend, all that it matters is that you are happy. That's really all that matter in life.

Yasssssss....

Honestly I thought I was going to hate this book; mostly because i hate fantasy; so a middle grade witch story sounded awful.

And it was; at first.

The more you got in to the story the more unique it became. Yes there were definatley issues with it; but every book has issues right?

I saw the plot twist coming; but that still made me wide eyed. And then more and more pllot twists started coming and the things I was worried about in the beginning were forgotten within the middle of the book.

This book really taught me to not underestimate middle grade fantasy anymore.

Third book in the Bras and Broomsticks series. Rachel is now a witch in her own right, and she and younger sister Miri are headed off to summer camp where Rachel hopes to attract the attention of a certain cute classmate. She does, but she also has major problems with a cousin she never knew she had. This cousin, also a witch, has decided that she likes Rachel's fairly normal teen life better than her own, and she wants to switch bodies with Rachel. Read the book to see what happens.

I laughed more in this one (especially at the beginning). And I was glad there was less mindless whining from Rachel. On the other hand, I was really annoyed that she didn't figure things out more quickly, and didn't do something about it when she could have. So, mixed feelings on this one.

I really enjoyed the setting of this one. The camp was so much fun, and as I'm from a rural area in Canada, about as different from New York City as possible, I understood this setting a lot more than the street names referenced in the first two books. In addition to the wonderful campsite, the magic of this world was developed further, and we learned more about the hidden world of magic, and how it's bigger than we'd previously thought.

While I understood (eventually) why things went the way they did, I still have to say I was disappointed with Miri's character in this book. After her obsessive and reckless behavior in the last book, I really hoped she would've shown more growth, but instead, she became as annoying as she possibly could in an incredibly short amount of time. That being said, I enjoyed seeing Rachel around kids her own age that didn't all hate her because of that fashion show--I especially liked Alison and Poodles and hope to hear more from them in the last book, though I don't see how Poodles at least could be involved.

Was this book good?
Yes yes yes!

Miri is STILL a lunatic. Fine, a little bit saner than before.
There were a lot of new characters, some were incredible while some were not.
For example Liana, who was totally a bitch (please pardon my language) but there's no other way to describe her.

The third book starts when Miri and Rachel are send to a Summer Camp.

More magic ✔
More trouble✔
More secrets revelation ✔

And guess what? There was the revelation of Aunt Sasha's history. That was thrilling and shocking as well.

There was Raf as well. I know, I've never mentioned his name in any of my reviews but he was just so adorable in this one.
Too adorable.

Her mom, her dad and stepmom were awesome. Prissy was less annoying this time.

Overall, this was so much magical and fun.

If you haven't read the first two books, stop right now and come back when you are finished because I'm about to dive in! Now that Rachel has gained her own magical powers, she has a lot to learn about being a witch. Rachel and Miri have been enrolled in summer camp and the experience offers many lessons about stepping out of your comfort zone and appreciating the life you have. Even if it seems like someone has everything better than you, there are still many people that might envy what you have and do anything to get that life for themselves. Rachel and Miri have to reevaluate their relationship now that they both have magic and they have many lessons to learn in between campfire songs, swimming lessons and more spells!

Love this one! I will continue following these two sisters in their adventures. The authors imagery really makes the books better. As a fourteen year old, I can picture every scene in my head. I have also had my moments where I can't wait to start the next chapter. Summer camp friends, enemies, romance, comedy, and more engaged my mind for awhile. Couldn't wait to read all of it!

Update 2022: At 18 years old I have purchased the whole collection in hopes of sharing the series with my children one day. I definitely recommend!

I love this series. It's funny and sweet. I love Rachel's interactions with Raf and with her sister Miri.

The only thing I didn't like is that when her crisis happens at the end, she doesn't really do anything to solve it, it gets solved on its own. I would've loved to see Rachel actually come up with a plan that worked to fix everything.

But I look forward to reading the last book in the series!

The story dragged along without much interesting happening. What did happen was predictable. I got through the book but it bored me. Story about teenage witches at summer camp. Had all the usual summer camp antics mixed with some spells gone wrong. It had one very angry resentful girl with a chip on her shoulder, one having boy trouble while trying out her new witch skills and one keeping her witch skills hidden.

Ah this has to be my favorite or second favorite book in the series! Summer camp DRAMAAAA!!! Raf and Rachel are together and at summer camp with the summer love in full swing. Rachel has her powers now but Miri is having a stressful time at camp. There is obviously an antagonist in this one and her name is Liana. Rachel and Liana have an enemy relationship and have to deal with that on top of sharing a room together! Read to see what all the juicy summer camp drama leads to!

Hands down the best of the series! I definitely cried during it both times I read it! I really appreciate the maturing of Rachel’s character through the books and seeing what she cared about and what she cares about in this book. She becomes more mature as it goes through the book. Great adventure and read.

good god this book made me so nostalgic :,) i remember initially reading this in the fourth grade WHICH, in retrospect, was soooo young? (quite concerning) anyways- this book lived up to all of my memories and was the ideal summer read for me :^
(not to mention that re-reading this made me
realize how much this series has influenced my witchiness all these years later)
