Murder at the Vicarage
In the sleepy little English country village of St Mary Mead, all is not as it seems. Under a seemingly peaceful exterior lurks intrigue, guilt, deception—and murder. Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate, and overbearing landowner, is the most detested man in the village. Everyone, even the vicar, wishes he were dead. And very soon he is—shot in the head in the vicar's own study. A visiting artist confesses to the murder, but residents saw him elsewhere at the time the Colonel was shot. If he didn't do it, who did? Is he protecting the wife whom he loves? Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues. There is a new book coming out in September
which will have twelve new “Miss Marple” mysteries each penned by a different mystery writer from our generation.
I thought it would be fun to listen to the original “Miss Marple” story to refresh my memory, so I can see which of the new ones best captures the flavor of the originals.
This BBC production from 2003, was the first of a series of full cast dramatizations, starring June Whitfield as Miss Marple. It feels like you are listening to a movie, with a range of sound effects such as tea being poured, or crowds chatting in the background, etc.
It is the story of Colonel Protheroe, the most detested man in the village of St. Mary Mead, who is found dead in the Vicar’s study.
As the investigation begins, it is Miss Marple who provides the best eye witness account, and provides a list of seven suspects.
A trap is set and the amateur sleuth’s theory is put to the test.
NOTHING gets past Miss Marple, and this 2 hour 20 minute production is a fun way to get acquainted with her if you haven’t read any of her stories.

I didn't realize this was the first Miss Marple until after I'd finished it, and it was interesting to see that she got her sleuthing start mostly by living in a home perfectly placed for being nosy about the vicarage. (Listening to these is the best summer decision ever.)

Repeat listen. The unabridged story is so much better, but this is still very good as a secondary, entertaining, listen.
(extra: not sure the BBC needed to include a heavy breathing, noisy kissing session to this, it adds nothing to the story. Adulterous passion, and, murder of a tyrant.)

A very fun murder mystery. I would definitely recommend this version, which was a BBC dramatization so each character was voiced by a different actor or actress (shout out to Imelda Staunton). It really made me feel like I was listening to an old-fashioned radio show and it was incredibly enjoyable. Can't wait to read (or listen to) more Agatha Christie!!

A reread here - Richard Grant performing Murder at the Vicarage, always a classic. I was listening to this while falling asleep this time around but what a great introduction to Miss Marple - so nosy, so clever!

Miss Maple lebt ein beschauliches Leben in einem kleinen (fiktiven) Dorf namens St. Mary Mead im Südwesten Englands. Sie ist dafür bekannt, neugierig zu sein, sich überall reinzustecken und kleinere Probleme zu lösen. Nun hat sie ihren ersten richtigen Fall und gleich ein Mord. Im Arbeitszimmer von Rev. Leonard Clement wurde Colonel Protheroe, ein unsympathischer, herrischer Mann, der nicht sonderlich beliebt war, erschossen. Rev. Clement war zu diesem Zeitpunkt unterwegs zu einem Schäfchen seiner Gemeinde, was sich jedoch bald als Finte herausstellt, um ihn aus dem Haus zu locken. Der Fall scheint gelöst, als sich ein ein Maler freiwillig stellt. Kurz darauf gesteht aber die Witwe des Colonel ebenfalls den Mord. Wie sich herausstellt hatten sie und der Maler ein Verhältnis. So einfach scheint der Fall nun doch nicht zu sein, denn es gibt noch viele ungelöste Probleme, wie eine angefangene Nachricht des Colonel, falsche Uhrzeiten, Schüsse aus dem Wald und Diebstahl von Gemeindegeldern.
Miss Maple ist eigentlich eher eine Nebenfigur, die immer mal wieder auftaucht. Letztendlich hat eigentlich nur der Zuhörer den vollen Überblick über alle Unterhaltungen und Ermittlungen. Mal stellt der Pfarrer Fragen, mal der Inspektor und ab und an tratschen sie alles mit Miss Maple durch. Warum sie das tun, obwohl sie zu diesem Zeit einfach nur eine extrem neugierige Nachbarin ist, ist mir schleierhaft, ebenso wie die Tatsache, dass sie dermaßen auf sie hören und eine Zeugin in die Ermittlungen einbeziehen. Das ist eher unglaubwürdig. In späteren Fällen, in denen sie sich bereits einen Namen gemacht hat, ist das durchaus nachvollziehbar, zu diesem Zeitpunkt hat sie aber gerade mal Fälle über verschwundene Regenschirme und dergleichen gelöst.
Dennoch ist der Fall sauber ermittelt. Geschickt führt die Autorin die Leser und Zuhörer auf falsche Fährten, um dann doch wieder Occhams Razor zu bemühen. Heutzutage würde der Fall so nicht mehr funktionieren. Keiner könnte sich entschuldigen, weil er oder sie seinen Hut vergessen hat und man hätte wohl routinemäßig alle Verdächtigen einfach auf Schmauchspuren untersucht. Ich glaube nicht, dass es diese Analyse 1930 bereits gab. Es werden erstaunlich wenig Fingerabdrücke genommen, z. Bsp. wird dies bei den gefundenen Ohrringen einfach versäumt, das ist schlampige Arbeit aus heutiger Sicht, wo nach einem Mord alles abgepinselt wird. So gesehen, lässt der Fall durchaus einiges zu wünschen übrig, was saubere Ermittlung angeht.
Die Umsetzung als Hörspiel ist jedoch gelungen. Die Sprecher sind topp besetzt, vor allem June Whitfield als Miss Maple. Die Klangkulisse ist sparsam aber stimmig. Soundtrack wird auch nur in Form der Erkennungsmelodie verwendet und nicht so verschwenderisch wie in vielen deutschen Produktionen über die Szenerie gelegt. Hier spielt sich alle durch Dialoge ab, Kopfkino im besten Sinne, BBC eben.

In Murder at the Vicarage hat Miss Jane Marple aus St. Mary Mead ihren ersten Auftritt. In diesem BBC Radio Play wird sie von June Whitfield gespielt. Sie klingt gar nicht wie eine alte Dame und auch die Dramaturgie gibt nicht viel her. Ab und zu ein Türenklappen oder Schritte sind zu hören, ansonsten ist das mehr wie ein Hörbuch mit verschiedenen Sprechern. Und vor allem ist es langweilig und langatmig. Kurz vor Schluß wurde ich von einem schrillen Telefonklingeln aus dem Schlaf gerissen. Der Anrufer gesteht den Mord und falls man noch nicht ganz wach ist, wird das noch dreimal gegenüber anderen Personen wiederholt. Dann legt Miss Marple los, wie sie kombiniert hat und überhaupt wie großartig und schlau sie ist. Ziemlich nervtötend und von sich eingenommen, die Gute. Vielleicht ist dieser Krimi in Buchform besser, das Hörspiel taugt jedenfalls nicht viel.

I’ve just re-read “The Mysterious Affair At Styles,” the first in the Poirot series. Reading these two books back-to-back, it is interesting to note there are many similarities between the first Miss Marple and the first Poirot. Although published ten years apart. I think I will always prefer Poirot as a detective, I really enjoy his eccentricities.

3.5 to this BBC full cast adaptation featuring June Whitfield as a most impish Marple. The plot, as usual, is convoluted but our Jane seems always to be snooping around in the right place at the right time! A stellar supporting cast featuring Richard Todd, Imelda Staunton and the very proper and plummy Francis Matthews voicing the vicar.

Nothing like a good Agatha Christie mystery! This was my first audiobook. Liked it better than I thought I would.

Another radio-drama. These are done so well! This is the first Miss Marple mystery, and it was really fun. She's a great character, and I'm looking forward to more of her stories.

Just really disliked the format of the audiobook. It was like listening to only the audio of a TV show. Next time I'll just read the book myself.

Did not like the radio dramatization as much as the book. I did not like the change they made to Griselda's story.

I have never listened to a dramatization before and I really enjoyed it. I love Agatha Christie. She is great. I love Poirot and may just need to dive into Miss Marple now too!

Though it is a story I have read many times, hearing it as a radio drama gives it an extra something special in the telling.
