The Pope's Daughter
Lucrezia Borgia is one of the most vilified women in modern history. In 2007 he was ranked Joint Seventh with Stephen Hawking in The Telegraph's list of 100 greatest living geniuses. His dramatic work employed comedic methods of the ancient Italian commedia dell'arte, a theatrical style popular with the proletarian classes. He owned and operated a theatre company with his wife, the leading actress Franca Rame. Dario Fo died in Milan on October 13th 2016, at the age of 90.

This brings the curtain down on a mini Dario Fo binge - consisting of two plays: one simply brilliant!, the other very good, and the less brilliant Pope's Daughter. I was quite surprised on first glancing at the cover of this book, as it looked liked Lucrezia Borgia - daughter of Pope Alexander VI and Governor of Spoleto in 16th century Italy - had a tattoo of a long-necked bird on her exposed breast. But on closer inspection it is in fact the publishers logo cleverly placed there.
I thought Fo's work would basically present Lucrezia as the Fiery seductress and crafty murderer as one is led to believe; but what we get here is not the story of some Borgias evil whore, but of a lady who very much had a heart - showed compassion - was a strong independent thinker in a world dominated by men - and did the best she could for herself, and others, while a storm was brewing around her. Fo goes about defending the Borgia clan; and he is clearly very passionate about this, by presenting Lucrezia less of a monster or poisoner of husbands, and more the devoted wife, passionate lover of all things culture, and patron of the impoverished. Of course, this being an historical novel; and Fo's own reconsideration of Lucrezia’s life, it's really up to the individual as to how much you will or won't want to believe.
Although I think Dario Fo is far more suited to theatre than he is historical fiction: this being his first and only novel, it must be noted that he was in his late eighties when he wrote this book, and overall it is very well written - it's just that when it came to the dialogue; and there is a lot of it: Fo being a renowned playwright, I felt some of the scenes would have felt more at home on the stage than in a novel, and there is less of a feel for the period of time in question; thus I didn't really find it built up a vivid picture of things. Fo described his novel as a 'grotesque tragedy', and wanted to put right some of the scandal-mongering stories that engulfed the Borgias over the centuries to come - and for someone used to writing farcical plays for most of their career this would have been a massive leap and a completely different challenge for the Nobel laureate - and at the age of of 89 as well!
Mixed feelings on the novel - but finishing on a high note - the book is illustrated with some very impressive portraits that happen to be Fo’s own paintings which are mostly based on the Renaissance originals.

This is not the book that the blurb describes. I was expecting rich historical fiction and instead got a lot of clunky speeches from caricatures of famous Borgias. The novel sort of puts Lucrezia Borgia in context, showing her as a political pawn used by corrupt and hypocritical family (her father the pope and her brother a Cardinal) and then as a slightly less passive actor in the same power game. Parts are funny and there's a jester element to it all, poking fun at the hypocrites in power. The narrator's voice is too meta for my tastes: "and like would happen in a commedia dell'arte..."
So overall this just didn't do much for me. The detached writing was too full of summaries and long speeches that didn't have any nuance to the voices. Too bad! I hear the Nobel prize winning author was almost 90 and this was his first novel. Surely his other work is much better.
I'm still interested in the idea and time period, if anyone has a recommendation for something like this but excellent. Like is there a Mary Renault or Madeleine Miller equivalent to books about the Borgias?

Dacă toate romanele istorice ar fi scrise aşa, cred că istoria ar fi mult mai uşor înţeleasă şi iubită de public.
Dario Fo îşi propune să demoleze mitul sângeroasei şi diabolicei Lucrezia Borgia şi ne-o înfăţişează aici drept un personaj sensibil şi fermecător, marionetă a uneltirilor fratelui ei mai mare Cesare Borgia şi ale tatălui lor, papa Alexandru al VI-lea, cu care detractorii familiei Borgia o acuzau că ar fi avut relaţii incestuoase.
În realitate, se pare că Lucrezia se afla în relaţii destul de proaste cu fratele ei şi destul de distante cu tatăl, cei care complotaseră, de-a lungul timpului, la căsătoriile ei cu diferiţi nobili, pe măsură ce interesele politice le dictau oportunitatea unor alianţe, urmând ca, după ce interesele politice să se fi schimbat, soţii Lucreziei să fie eliminaţi cu implicarea directă a celor doi.
Dramaturg prin excelenţă, Dario Fo nu abandonează nici în acest roman tehnicile specifice teatrului (mult dialog, indicaţii de regie, mizanscene), ceea ce imprimă romanului un ritm alert şi îl face foarte uşor de citit.

Dario Fo, Nobel da Literatura em 1997, um ano antes de José Saramago, é fundamentalmente um dramaturgo. “O seu teatro político continua a ser um modelo para as novas gerações” lê-se na guarda posterior desta edição da D. Quixote. ���A Filha do Papa” consiste no seu único romance editado.
Fo, num trabalho, essencialmente bibliográfico, tenta, e de certa forma consegue, restabelecer a verdade sobre a personalidade de Lucrécia Bórgia, filha do Papa Alexandre VI considerada, ao longo da história, uma megera sem escrúpulos, cujo nome estaria sempre associado à vileza de carácter, à ignomínia cruel e desapiedada e ao envolvimento incestuoso com o seu irmão, Césare, o Valentino. Nada mais falso! Nesta narrativa, Lucrécia surge como uma personagem apaziguadora, de enorme graciosidade e bondade, uma mulher encantadora na sua sinceridade, apego familiar e conduta moral.
Mas também, “A Filha do Papa” remete-nos para as vicissitudes geo-históricas dos estados italianos, das suas contendas militares, das (des) unificações dos ducados consoante os seus interesses, conforme os ventos, ora combatendo ao lado dos franceses, ora dos espanhóis sempre procurando uma maior hegemonia das suas casas principescas e, obviamente, um domínio territorial dos seus próprios ducados.
A enigmática personagem de Rodrigo Bórgia, Alexandre VI para a cúria romana, é também aqui abordada de uma forma extremamente interessante; já que tentara, numa primeira fase, logo após o início do seu pontificado, acabar com o nepotismo e o simonismo que caracterizaram as posturas papais anteriores tentando introduzir uma reforma que, claramente, nunca verá a luz do dia dada a quantidade de opositores, a maior parte entre os seus próprios cardeais.
Os Della Rovere, os Orsini, os Colonna, os Este, os Montefeltro, os Médicis e, claro, os Bórgia enformam uma galeria de personalidades históricas que dão corpo à narrativa e que nos apaixona desde o início. Sobre estes últimos, somos logo avisados: “Qual é o motivo de tanto interesse com o comportamento destas personagens? Antes de mais, a despudorada falta de qualidade moral que lhes é atribuída em todos os momentos da vida. Uma existência libertina desde a sexualidade até ao comportamento sexual e político”.
Não considero que este romance de Dario Fo constitua mais uma, entre milhares, abordagem sobre a estirpe dos Bórgia … Há, de facto, informações que podemos recolher facilmente noutros documentos como, por exemplo, em “O Príncipe” de Maquiavel que, como tive ocasião de apontar, debruça-se também sobre este mesmo tema. Mas Fo, fá-lo de uma forma extremamente leve, agradável, com momentos hilariantes, ou seja, fá-lo como só os grandes escritores se atreveriam. Além de que reabilita a figura de Lucrécia, por quem, inopinadamente, nos apaixonamos.

I am not sure what I think about the current fashion for writing historical fiction in the present tense and using conversation to carry the action forward. In English Philippa Gregory and Hilary Mantel do it superbly, if, in the latter case, rather academically.
However, Italian is a language in which the "vivid present " [the use of the present tense to recount past events] is more common and, as we are in the hands of the dramatist Dario Fo, we must surely expect mostly dialogue.
On the whole I feel he succeeds, though I got lost in some of the early dialogue concerning political intrigues, as I have in other books about the scheming Borgias.
Why did Fo choose to write about Lucrezia? Because, I would guess, there can be no doubt that she is one of the most maligned women in history and because her story of course lends itself to high drama. Fo portrays her as the political pawn that any woman in her position and time would have been but also as intelligent, politically astute, kind and even gentle. In an interview about the book, the Nobel laureate dramatist said that Lucrezia reminded him in some ways of his late wife, Franca Rame, because Franca, too, had taken up unpopular causes, helped the unfortunate and felt the need to intervene for the sake of social justice.
We cannot know to what extent Lucrezia was complicit in the outrageous plotting of her devious father, Pope Alexander VI and notorious brother, Cesare, but that she tried to save at least one of her three husbands from death at their hands is documented. As Duchess of Ferrara she was popular with locals and, at the end of her life, espoused charitable causes and set up a convent. We know that she had an affair with the poet Pietro Bembo and this is touchingly recounted in the book. It is commonly held that she also had an affair with Francesco II Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantova, but Fo - uniquely, according to him - refutes this, citing the fact that Lucrezia would have known that Francesco had syphilis and would not have risked it.
The book is beautifully illustrated but I find it strange that none of the images - some of which are famous and some of which are, I presume, by Fo himself - are accredited.
As far as I am aware, the book is currently being translated into several other languages so, if you are interested in Lucrezia and get a chance to read it, I suggest that you do so. You may conclude, as I did, that she was a product of her time and class, neither wholly bad nor as good as Fo would have her but, like most of us, somewhere in between.

إبّان رحيل أيِّ بابا، تُرتَكب الكثير من جرائم القتل في روما؛ وذلك لأنّ المَجْمع البابويّ، حين يختتم جلسة انتخاب الحَبر الجديد، يُصدِر عفوًا، كما جرت العادة، عن كلّ مرتكبي الجرائم خلال الأيّام التي خلا فيها العرش. وهكذا، فإنّ الناقمين، الراغبين بالانتقام، يستغلّون خلوَّ العرش ليفرّغوا الغلّ المستشري في صدروهم؛ يقتلون اليوم ليعودوا أحرارًا في الغد، وكلُّ هذا بفضل عفوٍ شاملٍ ومضمون. ما أجمل ذلك الزمان!

Evidentno je da se Nobelovac Dario Fo, pre svega dramski pisac kome je ovo bio romaneskni debi, služio tehnikom komedije del arte (primer su, najpre, dijalozi!) i svojim velikim iskustvom sa njome. Pomešao je satiru, faktografiju, tračeve, stereotipe, stvorivši zabavno, žanrovski pomalo neobično, atipično romaneskno viđenje Lukrecije. Očigledno je da mu je veoma simpatična i draga, pa se potrudio da prečisti njenu biografiju, mada ostajući u domenu fikcije, od silnih istorijskih nepravdi i dopada mi se što je ovo živa, svakidašnja Lukrecija, dete-žena, povređivana i iskorišćena kao očev i bratovljev pion, a ipak empatična, zaljubljena, mila, plemenita i puna životne energije.
Istina, pretrčano je preko mnogih epizoda, poput Huanovog ubistva, braka sa Alfonsom Aragonskim ili veze sa Pjetrom Bembom, a opet, ne mogu reći da autor nije na sve je obratio pažnju i da je išta izostavljeno. Naprosto, određene stvari koje su istorijski neproverene, ostavlja na nivou nagađanja ili potpuno raskrinkava kao izmišljotine (Peroto i vanbračni sin, incest, veza sa Frančeskom Gonzagom); druge, koje fikcija uglavnom preskače (Karlota koja je odbila Čezarovu prosidbu, npr), uredno su pobrojane.
Sviđa mi se što su papa i Čezare skoro pa ravnopravni glavni likovi, posvećeno im je mnogo prostora i pažnje, a to i ne čudi s obzirom na uticaj koji su imali na glavnu junakinju. S druge strane, najmlađi brat Žofre kao da i ne postoji, pojavi se niotkuda oženjen i opet iščezne; Vanoca i Đulija Farneze takođe - pomenimo to u prilog isprekidanosti i izostavljanju delova priče.
Komentari pisca, aluzije na neke današnje pojmove, citiranje drugih proučavalaca porodice, upotpunjuju udaljavanje od žanra istorijskog romana, stvarajući neobičan hibrid u skladu sa renesansom koju prikazuje, što je možda bila krajnja namera pisca, a možda je jednostavno reč o neiskustvu u pisanju romana.
Kako god bilo, kao ljubitelju svega u vezi sa Bordžijama (a čitala sam zaista svašta - od Puzove "Porodice" do Burhardove nebuloze; gledala seriju...ali misterioznost koja prati Bodžije uvek ostavlja mesta za nove interpretacije i nagađanja, samim tim i dela), knjiga mi je bila zanimljiva (pročitala sam je za dan!), stil je prijemčiv, zabavan i ne opterećuje, pa se stranice brzo okreću.
Dopada mi se očigledan uloženi napor da se isprave nepravde koje je legenda nanela Lukreciji, u čemu je, rekla bih, pisac bio uspešan. Ironični, pronicljivi pogled na društveno-politički kontekst je veoma interesantan i koristan.
Ipak smatram da oni koji očekuju istorijsku fikciju u uobičajenom smislu neće biti preterano oduševljeni, pošto će roman izneveriti njihova očekivanja, upravo zbog svog nesvakidašnjeg tona, autorskih poigravanja, komentara i kritičkog pogleda na verodostojnost onoga što je pristiglo do nas, kroz vekove. U svakom slučaju, predstavlja osveženje u moru nebulozne istorijske fikcije o Bordžijama.
Istina, pretrčano je preko mnogih epizoda, poput Huanovog ubistva, braka sa Alfonsom Aragonskim ili veze sa Pjetrom Bembom, a opet, ne mogu reći da autor nije na sve je obratio pažnju i da je išta izostavljeno. Komentari pisca, aluzije na neke današnje pojmove, citiranje drugih proučavalaca porodice, upotpunjuju udaljavanje od žanra istorijskog romana, stvarajući neobičan hibrid u skladu sa renesansom koju prikazuje, što je možda bila krajnja namera pisca, a možda je jednostavno reč o neiskustvu u pisanju romana.
Kako god bilo, kao ljubitelju svega u vezi sa Bordžijama (a čitala sam zaista svašta - od Puzove "Porodice" do Burhardove nebuloze; gledala seriju...ali misterioznost koja prati Bodžije uvek ostavlja mesta za nove interpretacije i nagađanja, samim tim i dela), knjiga mi je bila zanimljiva (pročitala sam je za dan!), stil je prijemčiv, zabavan i ne opterećuje, pa se stranice brzo okreću.
Dopada mi se očigledan uloženi napor da se isprave nepravde koje je legenda nanela Lukreciji, u čemu je, rekla bih, pisac bio uspešan. Ironični, pronicljivi pogled na društveno-politički kontekst je veoma interesantan i koristan.
Ipak smatram da oni koji očekuju istorijsku fikciju u uobičajenom smislu neće biti preterano oduševljeni, pošto će roman izneveriti njihova očekivanja, upravo zbog svog nesvakidašnjeg tona, autorskih poigravanja, komentara i kritičkog pogleda na verodostojnost onoga što je pristiglo do nas, kroz vekove. U svakom slučaju, predstavlja osveženje u moru nebulozne istorijske fikcije o Bordžijama.

🔼لا أنكر بأنني ضجرت في بداية الرواية من كثرة الشخصيات المذكورة ولكنني فطنت لسبب ذلك لاحقا.

🔼أحتوى الكتاب على رسومات للشخصيات بملامح العصر المذكور وقد اعجبني ذلك جدا حيث جعل من تخيل الأحداث أجمل و أوضح بالنسبة لي.

🔼بالنسبة للشخصية الرئيسية بالرواية [ أبنة البابا ] فقد جعلتني أمتعض منها في بعض المواقف واساندها في فترات لاحقا أما شخصية البابا [ رودريغو ] فأنتي أراه شخصية سيكوباتية معقدة جدا وواقعية لحد كبير أيضا وقد ادهشتني مواقف عديدة قام بها لاسيما حين استدعى كل من [ كوبرنيكوس] عالم الفلك ، و[ نوفارا] عا��م رياضيات والذي استدعاهم لمناقشة مشروع الكنيسة الاصلاحي الذي صرح برغبته في قيامه.

🔼بالنسبة لشحصية [ شيزاري ] شقيق البطلة فهو حقا كان من أبرز الشخصيات والتي لعبت دورا كبير في سير الأحداث بالرواية .

Biografia romanceada (atamancada) sobre a vida dos Borgia, com destaque para Lucrécia (a Inocente), para o irmão, Cesare, (o Bandido) e para o pai, Rodrigo, (obviamente, o Santo, porque era papa). Uma família de corruptos e assassinos, excepto a Lucrécia, que o Dario Fo apresenta como vítima, embora eu não acredite.
O que estou em crer é que o júri do Nobel não leu este romance (o único), apenas as peças de teatro (ou viu-as). É que isto é uma coisa muito mal amanhada; não existe uma continuação lógica entre os capítulos; há partes descabidas e sem o mínimo interesse; as personagens, e suas penas, não despertam um laivo de emoção; os diálogos são um enfado; periodicamente, o narrador intervém com uns comentários chocarreiros que... minha santa Lucrécia! Resumindo e concluindo: até eu, que sou uma lástima a escrever, acho que fazia melhor.
Está mais a cair para as duas estrelas, mas ficam três porque estou no dia de ser boazinha.

This book is not going to be to everyone's taste. The style is very different, almost carnival. However, Fo's look at the famous Lucretiza Borgia is well done and is a good counter to rumor and gossip.

oh my god dude fish or fucking cut bait, write a novel or a bio, because what's on the page now is both dry and spurious—and lessened significantly in its humanizing attempts bc the author has about the intellectual grasp of a pile of rocks re. women's interior lives, so every time he's like "lucrezia felt a feeling" i'm like "fucking did she. source it, you ass."

A ver qué puntuación le doy... Otro libro que creí que iba a ser una novela al uso y no entiendo muy bien en qué consiste: medio novela, medio ensayo... y no engancha tampoco. Sí que te permite saber más cosas de Lucrecia y su familia, pero no tengo muy claro de qué va el estilo de Dario Fo aquí. Debería dejarme ya de experimentos y retomar un buen tocho que dejé a medias hace como mil años: "Michelangelo", de Irving Stone. Seguro que ahora me parecerá otra cosa. O no, visto lo visto...

There’s a nice minimalism to certain Italian and French historical fiction novels where they just jump right in, no exposition or setup, just write what they want to write, switching willynilly from from a more essayistic style to dialogues to whatever. This one take it to an extreme, almost all dialogue. I envy them.

Desi la inceput mi-a placut acest stil usor umoristic, lejer, ca un documentar usurel de weekend, dupa jumatate a inceput sa ma copleseasca numarul de personaje si de intrigi aferente, evenimentele extrem de precipitate, povestea pe repede inainte. Astfel, la o zi dupa ce o terminasem nu mai stiam sa fac conexiuni si legaturi intre personaje, sa le conturez povestea de la inceput pana la moarte. Adaug ca nu mi-a placut cartea, naratiunea si ca nu il voi mai citi pe acest scriitor. Observ in stilul lui ceva dramatic, specific actoriei pe care a mai efectuat-o pe langa scris.

I didn't think one could make the life of Lucrezia Borgia boring, but this book manages to do it. 2.5/5, rounded down.
I had a hard time knowing how to rate this book. Some things about it are really interesting - the illustrations by the author, for example, are gorgeous takes on other existing portraits of Lucrezia and her surrounding cast of characters. The story itself is compelling and it was a quick read.
The writing was just weird though. It seemed to waver between nonfiction type writing (referencing Marx, for example, in order to make a point about a character's political leanings) and fiction. This made it hard for me to feel immersed in the story.
I don't know if some of this is due to translation or not. Some of the oddness made more sense when I realized the author is primarily a playwright - the book definitely gives you the sense more that you're watching something take place on a stage and not that you're living alongside the characters.
Finally, the characters were really one dimensional. If I hadn't physically been able see how many pages were left in the book, I would have been completely surprised when Lucrezia died. There was no probing into the emotions or feelings of the characters at all. Lucrezia apparently did a lot of amazing things but all the book really told me was that she was beautiful and somehow raised an army, but gave no details as to how she did that.
It was entertaining and a fast read but mostly just left me wishing I'd read a different book about Lucrezia. Fo clearly wanted to give a more positive depiction of LB than some accounts, but I feel like this depiction didn't do her justice as a complex person -- it just took all the rumors besides the affair with Bembo and made them unfair attacks on her otherwise shining character, the nature of which is hinted at but never really expanded upon.

Despre Lucrezia Borgia s-au scris atâtea cărți, s-au realizat atâtea filme, încât e greu de spus că cineva mai poate veni cu ceva cu adevărat nou.
Dario Fo încearcă să ofere o altă perspectivă, aceea a lucrurilor bune pe care le-a făcut Lucrezia, victimă a mașinațiunilor făcute de tatăl său, Papa Alexandru al VI-lea, și mai ales de fratele Cesare. Autorul italian se bazează foarte mult pe arhive, bibliografia este bogată, iar romanul devine mai mult o carte de istorie ușor romanțată, spre deosebire de alte cărți ale genului (cum ar fi cele semnate de Philippa Gregory), care sunt clar cărți de ficțiune bazate oarecum pe fapte istorice reale.
Așadar, mi-a plăcut romanul lui Dario Fo.

pisano u duhu satire, groteske, humoreske, dario fo (inače nobelovac 1997.) pokušao je na teatralan način prikazati život lucrezie borgie - izbaciti ga iz suhoparnog povijesnog nabrajanja likova i događaja i umetnuti ga u realniji, nama bliži i razumljiviji svijet. uspio je u tome osrednje. na momente prilično zabavan, duhovit i vrckast, a na momente zamoran.. dobre ideje ne baš spretno izvedene.

تتناول الرواية حياتها عن قرب، ويحاول داريو فو إعطاءها حقها المسلوب والرد على كل الادعاءات الموجهة لها. فقد تعرضت للظلم في حياتها وحتى بعد مماتها لدرجة اتهامها بممارسة سفاح القربى.
تلقت لوكريسيا أول صدمة في حياتها في عمر الثانية عشر، عندما أخبرها الكسندر السادس الذي كان يتهيأ لاستلامه منصب البابا حينذاك، أنه والدها الحقيقي وليس خالها، وأن من كانت تظنه والدها هو مجرد عامل أجير لديه. إذن هي مجرد ابنة غير شرعية وقد تكرم أبوها أخيراً بالاعتراف بها وبأشقائها عندما ضمن الحصانة بعد استلامه منصب البابا. تتوالى الصدمات بعد ذلك من كل جانب، وتصبح لوكريسيا مجرد سلعة بين يدي أبيها وأخيها شيزاري، يستخدمونها لتحقيق أغراضهم السياسية.
هي إنسانة، لها حسناتها وعيوبها، أصابت وأخطأت، كانت أقصى أمانيها أن تعيش حياة طبيعية، أن تحب وتكوّن أسرة وأصدقاء. ربما لم تفلح بأن تترك سمعة جيدة لها، لكنها على الأقل استطاعت أن تظل إنسانة عندما كانت محاطة بالوحوش.
الرواية جميلة ومختلفة، أحداثها مثيرة وأسلوب الكاتب مميز. لم تشدني في البدء، وتهت مع كثرة الأسماء والأحداث، لكنني سرعان ما انسجمت معها ولم أشعر بنفسي إلا وقد أنهيتها. الحوارات رائعة وهي التي أنقذت السرد الممل في بعض الأحيان، يرجع ذلك ربما إلى أن الكاتب مسرحي في الأصل وهذا عمله الروائي الأول.

تلقت لوكريسيا أول صدمة في حياتها في عمر الثانية عشر، عندما أخبرها الكسندر السادس الذي كان يتهيأ لاستلامه منصب البابا حينذاك، أنه والدها الحقيقي وليس خالها، وأن من كانت تظنه والدها هو مجرد عامل أجير لديه. إذن هي مجرد ابنة غير شرعية وقد تكرم أبوها أخيراً بالاعتراف بها وبأشقائها عندما ضمن الحصانة بعد استلامه منصب البابا. تتوالى الصدمات بعد ذلك من كل جانب، وتصبح لوكريسيا مجرد سلعة بين يدي أبيها وأخيها شيزاري، يستخدمونها لتحقيق أغراضهم السياسية.
هي إنسانة، لها حسناتها وعيوبها، أصابت وأخطأت، كانت أقصى أمانيها أن تعيش حياة طبيعية، أن تحب وتكوّن أسرة وأصدقاء. ربما لم تفلح بأن تترك سمعة جيدة لها، لكنها على الأقل استطاعت أن تظل إنسانة عندما كانت محاطة بالوحوش.
الرواية جميلة ومختلفة، أحداثها مثيرة وأسلوب الكاتب مميز. لم تشدني في البدء، وتهت مع كثرة الأسماء والأحداث، لكنني سرعان ما انسجمت معها ولم أشعر بنفسي إلا وقد أنهيتها. الحوارات رائعة وهي التي أنقذت السرد الممل في بعض الأحيان، يرجع ذلك ربما إلى أن الكاتب مسرحي في الأصل وهذا عمله الروائي الأول.

La figlia del papa è un libro molto particolare dedicato alla famiglia Borgia e in particolare a Lucrezia.
Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi quando l'ho iniziato, soprattutto perché non ho mai letto niente di Dario Fo prima d'ora, e per gran parte della lettura sono rimasta un po' perplessa. Inizialmente l'ho trovato infatti molto più simile a un saggio piuttosto che a un romanzo storico. Alla fine mi sono abituata a questo stile originale, e devo dire che il libro nel complesso mi è piaciuto, anche se alcuni avvenimenti, a mio parere, vengono narrati in maniera troppo frettolosa o superficiale. Mi è piaciuta anche la caratterizzazione dei personaggi, innanzitutto quella di Alessandro VI e Lucrezia, e il fatto che essa emerga soprattutto dai dialoghi, che sono davvero arguti e talvolta anche divertenti.
Penso che possa essere una lettura stimolante per i lettori interessati alla famiglia Borgia, e per quelli che amano i romanzi poco "convenzionali" e più sperimentali.

Ritengo fondamentale, prima di leggere questo libro, leggere quello di Maria Bellonci per avere un'idea più completa del personaggio di Lucrezia Borgia. Infatti Fo fa molto riferimento a fonti storiche ma in modo "leggero" senza approfondire più di tanto e forse è giusto così per come è strutturato il racconto. In alcuni passaggi sembra di essere a teatro con Fo che recita sul palco col suo classico stile la vita di Lucrezia. Nel complesso è un discreto libro che non ha la pretesa di essere un saggio storico ma una breve biografia che rende bene il personaggio di Lucrezia Borgia.

Cam asa as descrie romanul lui Dario Fo despre Lucrezia Borgia. Am avut tot timpul impresia ca citesc o piesa de teatru, ca naratiunea tinea loc de didascalii si ca toate dialogurile sunt replicile unor personaje de teatru. Un exercitiu incredibil, foarte bine realizat.

Romanul tratează viața celei care a fost Lucrezia Borgia. O figură controversată adesea considerată fără scrupule și femeie fatală care cot la cot cu tatăl și fratele său a dus de nas bărbați pentru interesele politice ale familiei sale. Însă, în această ficțiune istorică Dario Fo rescrie biografia Lucreziei dintr-o altă perspectivă. Ea apare aici mai mult în calitate de victimă, fiind folosită de tatăl și fratele său.
Drama sa începe încă din copilărie atunci când tatăl său era în preajma sa și a fraților ei în calitate de unchi. Avea să rămână fiică nelegitimă pentru mult timp. Apoi urmează căsătoria aranjată cu Giovanni Sforza. Căsătorie declarat neconsumată și Giovanni impotent atunci când acest mariaj nu mai avea interes pentru fratele și tatăl ei. O altă căsătorie aranjată se succede, cea cu Alfonso de Aragon care se presupune că ar fi fost omorât de către Cesare, fratele Lucreziei. Și cel de al treilea soț și acesta ales de familia sa, Alfonso d’Este.
Nu pot zice că nu mi-a plăcut romanul, dar parcă pe-alocuri era nevoie de mai multă desfășurare. Uneori aveam impresia că parcă văd un serial din care lipsește câte o jumătate de serie. În rest, am apreciat detaliile noi pe care le-am aflat în legătură cu familia Borgia și cu perioada Renașterii. Autorul reușește să redea acea atmosferă de epocă prin descrieri si dialoguri.
Contrar așteptărilor, deși Lucrezia apare precum o victimă, iar pe final este reprezentată și mărinimia și inteligența sa, mie nu mi-a plăcut acest personaj. M-a indignat scena în care ea își vede copilul în vârstă de patru ani, iar acesta nu-și recunoaște mama pe care nu o văzuse de doi ani. Cred că mi-ar fi greu să nu-mi văd copilul o singură zi, dar cum e posibil să nu-i fii alături doi ani?! Autorul nu a dat prea multe detalii la acest subiect.
“Fata mea, trebuie să încep prin a recunoaște că, după toate câte s-au întâmplat, noi, familia Borgia, am dobândit mari avantaje. Toți, mai puțin tu, Lucrezia. Doar tu, ca printr-un absurd decret al destinului, a trebuit să plătești pentru alegerile noastre fără seamăn, adesea pătate de sânge.”

Dario Fo es un ilustre y prolífico autor de obras de Teatro que ganó el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1997. Además de autor es actor, promotor y empresario teatral comprometido con las causas populares. Sus obras de Teatro utilizan muchos elementos del Teatro Popular Italiano que nació durante el Renacimiento Italiano, por lo que conoce a fondo esta extraordinaria y bella etapa de la historia.
No soy de ninguna manera conocedor de Teatro, pero tal vez influido por el antecedente de Fo acerca de su especialidad en este campo, me parece que la estructura general de la obra está un poco apegada a lo que es un texto para una obra de Teatro. Los diálogos en ocasiones me parecen como pensados para dos actores que estuviesen dialogando en el escenario. También hay cambios radicales en la secuencia de la obra como si el telón bajara y subiera para dar entrada a nuevos actos en diferentes escenarios y por último considero que algunas partes del texto invaden plenamente lo que es la escena teatral ya que encuentro diálogos y situaciones que pertenecen más a una escenificación que a una narración; estos giros dramáticos aparecen en varias ocasiones durante esta esplendorosa narración. No me quejo, al contrario me parece un texto diferente y que me ha hecho disfrutarla mucho.
El entorno en el cual se desarrolla la obra nos permite dar un salto en el tiempo de 500 años y llegar hasta Roma, Ferrara, Mantua, Florencia, etc. en la plenitud del Renacimiento. Las páginas están impregnadas de aquellos aires llenos de humanismo y belleza, pero también llenos de intrigas y crueldad. No cabe duda que ha sido una de las épocas doradas de la humanidad y tal vez hubiera sido una de las épocas en que me hubiese gustado vivir rodeado de ese espíritu de humanismo y de entusiasmo por lo bello.
El curso de la novela nos hace ver, entre otras cosas, que con los todos los cambios que se dieron en las artes y en las ciencias, con todos los grandes sabios y artistas que desfilaron en esa época, la corteza del mundo cambió ostensiblemente pero la esencia ha permanecido inmutable. El dinero, el sexo y el poder han sido lo grandes motores de la mayoría de la humanidad; la forma de mostrar este interés, de exhibirlo es lo que ha variado. Sorpresivamente en aquella época el Papa en turno, tenía esposa e hijos y aunque oficialmente no estaba permitido, él los podía exhibir incluso en la Corte ¡y hasta tener amantes aparte de su esposa! La intervención e injerencia del clero en la vida de las ciudades era total, incluso encabezaban a los ejércitos, lo que significa que sus poderes no sólo eran divinos sino también terrenos. Es extraordinario como Dario Fo derrama, sobre las páginas de este libro, el ambiente que privaba en esta sociedad.
Sobre la familia Borgia, encabezada por Rodrigo que llega a ser el gran Papa Alejandro III, se han tejido muchas historias terribles y siniestras. El año de 1492 no solamente es el año del descubrimiento de América, también es el año en que muere el Papa Inocencio III por lo que Rodrigo Borgia toma la Piara y si ya detentaba un poder inmenso desde hacía cuatro Papados, ahora parece adquirir un poder temible en todos sentidos. Su hijo César se arroga poderes sin medida alguna y comete todo tipo de atrocidades con tal de acumular poder, bienes materiales y mujeres. Sus actos son siniestros, inhumanos sin importar si se trata de gente conocida, si son hermanos, cuñados, o cualquier persona que interfiera con sus caprichos y deseos.
Lucrecia Borgia también ha sido perseguida por la historia como una mujer maligna, sediciosa, lúbrica, degenerada e invadida por los deseos de poder y dominio. Esa es la impresión a la que yo había tenido acceso a través de mis años como “cazador de información”. Esta obra del autor Italiano nos la presenta como una mujer manipulada y perjudicada por su padre, el Santo Papa, y su hermano César. También nos la hace aparecer como una mujer dueña de una belleza extraordinaria y de unas virtudes Cristianas muy desarrolladas, buscando siempre el bien de las demás personas y amante de la belleza. Aunque eso sí, tuvo algunos deslices amorosos a pesar de haber estado casada en tres ocasiones.
Por las páginas de este libro desfilan grandes personajes y acontecimientos del Renacimiento: Copérnico, Maquiavelo, Miguel Ángel, Leonardo da Vinci, Pietro Bembo, Hércules de Este y algunos otros, todo tratado con la genialidad y talento de este gran escritor.
En fin una hermosa narración que emana luz por donde se le vea. Tal vez se trata de esa luz que el Renacimiento produjo en su tiempo y que ha llegado hasta nosotros a través del tiempo, como aquellas estrellas que ya han dejado de existir pero que su luz todavía llega a tocar nuestro planeta.
