Just like probably all of Paige Toon's books, "Johnny Be Good" is a perfect book to read by the pool or at the beach during your summer vacation. But even though I generally enjoyed this book, it is definitely my least favorite out of her books that I've read so far.

"Johnny Be Good" was a very quick read and I loved the first half of it. But around the middle of the book, things began to get slower and there were a couple of chapters I thought were quite boring and wouldn't have needed to be in the book. I also think this book was often quite predictable and I've known how this book would end from the start.

Another thing that bothered me was the fact that the female main character, Meg, was very annoying and incredibly naive. I just couldn't stand her at all. But then again, I absolutely loved Christian which made up for a lot!

All in all, this was a quick summer read and I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars!

The first thing you should know is that the book does not end here… is one of those that drops a bomb at the end, and you have to wait for the second book to know how it goes… As the following book is already out and about, that’s not too much of a drawback, if you enjoyed this one is actually a plus…
About the story, I found it quick paced and engaging from the start, which is always one of the best qualities in a book. The setting is the glamour of the rich and famous in Hollywood, I liked it, makes you dream of the stardom…
I usually don’t like stories that come with this much sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll (should I had alcoholism as well?) but being the book mainly about a ‘maudit’ rock star, I guess here it came with the territory and it didn’t bother me so much.
Towards the end you want to kill the heroine, just because she’s too dumb!!!

I wish I could take back the £6 I paid for this rubbish, or else the precious time I wasted!

This book...how to review it? Well, for one: It was just plain stupid.

Character:
Meg - shallow, whiny, needy, naive, pathetic and absolutely unrelatable in every way.
Christian - 2d, unrealistic and his actions just never seemed to be justified (if that makes sense)
Johnny - what a prat! Stereotypical rocker, pretty much a 2d caricature. What was there even to like about him?

I picked up this book because I loved Lucy in The Sky and thought maybe her second novel would be just as great.

WRONG.

Although I did manage to finish the novel, it was a painful experience. I shouldn't have been picking at silly things like Meg knowing instantaneously how to drive on the right side of the road, but those small things began to add up. Eventually I found myself laughing out loud, not for something funny in the novel, no, because the whole story was becoming a joke.

The plot revolves around Meg, the new PA to the rockstar Johnny Jefferson and how she copes working with him and whatnot. What we get is a tale about a girl who starts her new job knowing jack all about Johnny Jefferson, preferring Kylie, to a girl who becomes borderline obsessed with him. The whole story is about her obsession, jealousy and constant whingeing. I mean, every time she'd describe something Johnny was doing wrong, which kept putting me off, the more she whined about wanting him.

But wait for it! It gets worse.

Introduce Christian, Johnny’s best friend and also the other love interest. The relationship between Christian and Meg, I assume, was supposed to be building throughout the novel. It seemed rushed, it seemed out of place and a convenient way for the author to throw in another male figure to piss Johnny off, an easy way to add a love triangle. So basically, for 90% of the novel we have Meg professing her undying love for Johnny and then the last couple chapters she gets with Christian. Did anyone else find that absolutely ridiculous?

I hear that Paige Toon will be continuing Johnny Be Good, what with that "cliffhangery" end that she had in this novel, but I for one might as well Wiki it to find out what happens.

This is a nice bit of chic-lit that I picked up to forget a dark, violent book that was staying with me.
I really enjoyed the first part of the book, but found as it progressed I became less enamoured with the characters and a little bored with the story itself.
Meg is a PA who finds herself working for Johnny, one of the hottest rock stars 'in the world'!!! She also finds herself falling head over heels for him despite his reputation of being a 'bad boy', something she often witnesses herself.
This is the first of three books, but I found myself not that keen to keep going with the series. In fact reading the blurbs and a couple of reviews for the next book told me pretty much everything I wanted to know.
The author is new to me, and I see from other reviews that this is not her best book, so I am now keen to read something else she has written. A good light book that makes a nice holiday read.

So I'm in the mood for an Adult Contemp and came across this. I wasn't going to pick this up considering it's $10 on Amazon, but it had the trifecta that I can't say "no"to: British, tattooed, Rock God. **slaps hand on forhead**Groans... I have issues. Hope this is good...

UPDATE same day....Yea, I couldn't put this down. Looking forward to book two...starting....NOW!

I'm such a sucker for stories like this. I'm sure that's pretty obvious now seeing as about half the books I've written about on here are about Movie Stars/Rock Stars. I just can't help it! Johnny Be Good is really no different from any celebrity centered books out there. The titular Johnny is your stereotypical Rock Star. He is the walking embodiment of the Rock and Roll lifestyle. He is constantly drinking, doing drugs and sleeping around with random women. He is also incredibly, drop dead gorgeous. Meg is a 24 year old Londoner who just flew to LA to become Johnny's new PA. Needless to say, after spending most of her waking hours with the Rock Star, she ends up falling for him. Johnny's behavior towards Meg is confusing and frustrating most of the time. He kisses her and then acts like nothing happened, he sleeps with her and then comes home with another woman. Despite all of this, Meg just couldn't get rid of her feelings for Johnny. To make things worse, she can't talk to anybody about it, not even her best friend back home in London because of the confidentiality agreement she signed when she started working for Johnny. The only other person she could talk to was Christian, Johnny's close friend since childhood. Christian was in town to write Johnny's biography and he pretty much figures out what's going on between Meg and his friend without Meg needing to tell him anything. It was pretty much obvious at this point that Christian had feelings for Meg, but he doesn't say a word to her even when he leaves to go back to London. Some time after, Meg, finally fed up with Johnny's behavior, decides to quit her job and goes back to London as well. She was half hoping that Johnny would stop her, but in the end he doesn't and she's heartbroken. Back in London, Meg moves back in with her best friend but her best friend already found a new roommate so Meg had to make do with the couch until she found her own place. She gets a job at an exclusive restaurant and one day while she was at work, Christian shows up. They catch up and Meg casually mentions that she's looking for a place. Christian offers to rent Meg the spare room at his place and so Meg ends up moving in with him. Eventually, Christian confesses to Meg that he has feelings for her and Meg realizes that while she still wasn't completely over Johnny, she also had feelings for Christian. They become a couple and soon Christian finishes the biography he was writing and flies back to LA to have Johnny read and approve it. He also tells Johnny that he and Meg are together. Johnny doesn't take the news well. He punches Christian and flies to London to see Meg. Johnny shows up at Meg and Christian's place in the middle of the night and tries to convince Meg to leave Christian and be with him instead. Meg refuses. Johnny tells her that he loves her and that he's willing to go to rehab for her. He tries to kiss her but she pushes him away and out of the front door. Before leaving, Johnny tells her that he's coming back for her after he gets out of rehab. Meg tried not to think about what Johnny said. She figured he was just drunk and he probably didn't mean it. To her surprise, Johnny shows up a few weeks later, freshly out of rehab. Again, he tries to get Meg to leave Christian and go back to LA with him. At this point, Meg realizes that while she still had feelings for Johnny, it was Christian she truly loved. She and Johnny make small talk and Johnny ends up kissing her. To her surprise, she found herself kissing him back and they end up having sex. She feels guilty afterwards and she kicks Johnny out. She couldn't bear the thought of leaving Christian and hurting him. Before he leaves, Johnny tells Meg that he will give her three months to decide. He will wait for her for three months and he will let her ago after that. Meg says okay and the book ends. There is an epilogue but I can't talk about it without spoiling the story more than I already have.
What can I say? I thoroughly loved this book! My feelings towards Meg is neutral. I liked her well enough but I wanted to smack her at times for letting Johnny get away with treating her badly. And Johnny, as much as I wanted to hate him for being a drunken womanizer, I just couldn't. Okay, so maybe I should cut Meg some slack. What the hell is with girls and our attraction to bad boys? So yeah, I do think Johnny is pretty hot, but through the whole book, I found myself leaning towards Christian. Sure he's not as rich or good looking, but he's a great guy. He's sweet, thoughtful and he's really good to Meg. Also, despite Johnny being a complete asshole to him at times, Christian remains a loyal friend to Johnny. That says a lot about him, in my opinion. I'm glad that at the end of the book, Meg realizes that Johnny isn't the guy for her. Sure he says he can change, but somehow I really find that hard to believe.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's one of those books that despite being frustrating at times, you just can't help but keep reading. The ending wasn't quite as satisfying as I would have liked. It was pretty vague. But then again, the story isn't really over is it? We find out in the epilogue that the story is indeed far from over. There are bigger problems up ahead and I for one, can not wait to start reading the sequel.

description

Christian no me gusta. No me gusta!

FIVE~ Johnny Be Mine~ Stars*****

I’m a sucker for a good Rockstar romance. And when my friend Renee highly recommended this book, I just had to read it. And boy am I happy I did!!!!

This is a chick-lit romance; the characters and the story are so well constructed that I quickly and easily got lost inside the angst, and the rocky relationship between the characters. It felt real inside my heart and I couldn’t possibly put it down, for one second. What a fantastic book, I loved it beyond words.

The Rockstar romance genre is DEFINITELY my favorite!

Best ever!!!!

Thanks ReeRee for this amazing rec! Hugs !

I very rarely read chick lit any more, and this reminds me why. I got it from Book Club so figured I’d give it a go since it’s set in LA and is about a rock star.
So far we have a supposedly sensible and pragmatic young English PA mooning after her new boss from the second they meet because of his green eyes and flat abs, despite the fact that he is clearly an arsehole. Initially this was like eating Pick & Mix - mindlessly enjoyable despite knowing it’s not good for you, but now I just feel sick. Giving up at page 96.

4 stars because well, the writing isn’t bad and the banter is fun and the final few chapters had me up till after midnight.

But the characters, my, oh my!

Meg, you’re a galah, mate. Get a backbone and some self-respect.

Johnny is just a massive bastard. MASSIVE. He’s selfish, manipulative, toxic.

But, Christian is nice and you gotta kind of feel sorry for the poor guy.

I’ll dive into book 2 soon as I want to know what happens between the galah, the toxic piece of sh*t and Mr nice guy.

This was just as good as I remembered, it was fab to revisit Johnny and Meg again! Loved the story, characters, the ‘will they won’t they’ aspect and how it ends, knowing that there’s a sequel now helps, I didn’t know that when I originally read it! It may be classed as chick lit, but I think it’s more grittier - it’s certainly not light and fluffy!

First, i'll say this: STOP ROMANTICIZING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS!!!!
WAKE UP PEOPLE, THE CHARACTER IS A SOCIOPATH!!! (explanation below)

I HATE THIS BOOK AND THE ENDING SO MUCH!!

I didn't think that I could hate a character as much, but hey, Heeereeee's Johnny!

I would have rated this book a hundred if the ending was different. I mean, Johhny is not a "bad boy", he's a narcissistic- misogynistic prick. He treats people like crap just because he can.

What's up with authors condoning this kind of behavior and making girls around the world believe that they can change someone who, (is not that he CANNOT change) is that DOESN'T WANT to change! I'm kind of sick of this!

Oh yeah, but love cures everything, right? his love for her is going to make him change his ways. NO PEOPLE. And I'll tell you why.

One cannot give what one doesn't have. You can't love someone unless you love yourself first (and I'm speaking of all characters here).
Is obvious that none of the characters is healthy here.

I'll start with Meg.
I feel sorry for her, I don't hate her character as much, I think she's a smart enough woman to realize she's being used, but she fell for his manipulative way.
She sabotages herself again and again and makes her happiness depends on whether or not Johnny is gonna love her. That's sad, but that happens a lot to. Statistically, one in three woman is gonna be abused somehow (what happens in the book IS a type of emotional abuse). And when I said another ending would have made this book, is that instead of empowering this woman to overcome her abusive partner, she decides not to and
Here's the thing girls, nobody is going to COMPLETE YOU because your not a puzzle, you're not missing a piece. You are a FULL and VALUABLE human being that can find ANOTHER FULL VALUABLE human being to SHARE their happiness and love. Yes, we are flawed, but that's not an excuse to stand abuse.

Christian. Same as Meg
He might not be in a ROMANTIC relationship with Johnny, but he has a type relationship with him, a friendship, and a toxic one.

Now Johnny, let's start with his addictions, from drugs to alcohol and sex. There's this self-destructive behavior, so you'll say: he's brooding and have some issues. He's sick and as soon as he gets help he's gonna get better and love her.

But no, that would be true, and maybe this book would be too, if the next thing would happen at any given point: REMORSE. That's the difference, and that is what, in my opinion, makes him a sociopath. He never truly feels bad for anything bad he's done, and that's not due to the alcohol and drugs, that's to him being a sociopath. I'll go in order. First i'll define it with the help of wikipedia:

"Psychopathy also known as—though sometimes distinguished from—sociopathy is traditionally defined as a personality disorder characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited or bold behavior."

So, is he a sociopath? My guess is, yes. Here's how to spot a sociopath

a) Superficial charm and good intelligence: he can charm the pants off of everyone if he wants to i.e:

b) Absence of delusions and other signs of irrational thinking: not delusions in plot at least.

c) Absence of nervousness or neurotic manifestations: Not enough information

d) Unreliability: the whole plot. i.e:

e) Untruthfulness and insincerity: like, when he doesn't keep his word several times. i.e:

f) Lack of remorse and shame: he doesn't mind hurting people and doesn't even feel remorse for the things he's done i.e:

g) Inadequately motivated antisocial behavior: not as in criminal, just antisocial as in against society i.e

h) Poor judgment and failure to learn by experience: like, everything he does i.e

i) Pathologic egocentricity and incapacity for love: so self-obsessed that he does not care sincerely for others unless there's a gain. i.e: He uses emotional manipulation to get his way every time i.e

j) General poverty in major affective reactions: he doesn't emotionally connect with anybody and doesn't respond to things that should matter to him

k) Specific loss of insight: not specific

l) Unresponsiveness in general interpersonal relations: like every woman he sleeps with woman and shows no concern with anybody

m) Fantastic and uninviting behavior with alcohol and sometimes without. Self explanatory.

n) Suicide threats rarely carried out:

ñ) Sex life impersonal, trivial, and poorly integrated. Do we need to say more? (yes, ñ because Spanish is my first language, sorry for mistakes in writing or grammar)

o) Failure to follow any life plan: Sort of seen.

Oh, but he changes..
Nop, he want to change. He is FORCED TO every time. i.e:

3.5 ★ I could not put this soap opera down stars!

'But you were my girl first.'

This isn’t a book I’d go around recommending mainly because it had many triggers: drug and alcohol abuse, emotional abuse, unsafe sex, a love-triangle (including cheating).

Meg has landed a job as a PA for a famous musician Johnny Jefferson. Meg was the definition of desperate for the sexy, rich man she'd just met. That said, this book was spaced over 7 months so despite the insta-love these two developed a real connection and it was a slow-burn. I certainly preferred the first half because I had this hope for some pay-off and happiness to come by the end but - not quite. It was a wild ride, a mess and so depressing. There were numerous other people involved, and when things finally happened between the leads - it wasn’t great.

As much as I wanted to love Johnny, he behaved so atrociously. He never redeemed himself or even did anything redeemable. The worse things got, the more pathetic Meg became and I'm trying to have some compassion for the girl. Christian was such a wet rag, he didn’t do anything for me and I wish Paige chose someone better for this role. Love Johnny or not, he’s the one we would all choose so it begs the question - whats the damn point of a love △?

After going through quite a lot of turmoil with these characters, it actually finished on a huge cliff-hanger. Something Paige is known for. She likes throwing a spanner in the works and leaving things far form how you want them to be. I felt like this at the end of Thirteen Weddings and even though its all been rectified I still feel off about it.

I’m not saying Johnny be Good is bad and I’m not saying it’s good either. I’ve been struggling lately to even finish books, so points for keeping me entertained. I’ll pick up book 2 eventually, I definitely need some closure. If you are up for some drama and you can cope with the triggers I mentioned, then it’s worth a read.

After reading a review of Paige’s first novel, Lucy in the Sky, in Heat magazine I thought it sounded great so got hold of a copy and absolutely loved it so I couldn’t wait when I read about Paige’s second novel and I wasn’t disappointed…

Meg is off to Los Angeles to be CPA (Celebrity PA) to Johnny Jefferson, the hottest rockstar on the planet. She tells herself she will not fall for him but ultimately does. We follow her as she tries to figure out her feelings for Johnny and we constantly wonder if they will or if they won’t get together. Also in the mix is Christian, Johnny’s best friend and writer of his auto-biography, he helps to keep Meg’s feet on the ground.

It was a fabulous read and, if any of it is true, it shows a lot about what goes on in the world of a rockstar, the drinking and the drugs. Johnny was a good, but flawed, character and I kept hoping he would wake up and smell the coffee. All the minor characters were great; Davey, Santiago, Kitty, Rosa (I loved Rosa).

I think the only disappointment, and it is minor, was the ending. It left me feeling a bit… “huh?” I’m hopeful of a sequel, or even a mention in Chasing Daisy (the way we heard about Lucy from Lucy in the Sky in this one).

In the end I did love the book and the epilogue was only a minor minor disappointment. I whizzed throught the book and it was a real page-turner.

JOHNNY BE GOOD by PAIGE TOON

 photo bun2_zps0ef512fa.jpg

Cover: 5
Plot: 5
Characters: 5

Overall rating: 5 ROCKSTAR STARS!

Johnny be Good was a very funny and heartbreaking read which I totally loved.

Meg was given a chance to be a PA for one of the world's greatest rock stars Johnny. She started her job without a clue with what she was doing, and slowly she started to fall for him too. But with Johnny's notorious past with women will she just be one of his girls?

Johnny is the kind of character you believe you should really hate but can't. He was funny and sometimes a bit of a douche bag but you can't hate him totally since he has this endearing quality to him.

I loved Meg and I kind of loved Johnny even if he just hurts Meg. It was a great contemporary romance filled with hot British rock stars.

Right after I finished reading, I was so mad, I thought about giving 2 Stars. But when a book tugs emotions, has me fuming and ranting like this one, it isn't bad. And I kind of loved to hate it.

Meg heads to LA, to move in with Johnny Jefferson, one of the world's biggest rock stars - as his personal assistant. The more time they spend together, the better they get along.
And his best friend Chris, cool and calm, helps her keeping her cool around Johnny, through his ups and downs.
Johnny's into drinking, drugs and women, there's rumours about tons of girls, despite his girlfriend, the Teenie-Star gone bombshell, Serenity.
Meg adored her but turns out, that she's a bitch. Why does Johnny put up with that? And why is whatever happened with his ex-PA such a secret?

I expected fluffy chick-lit but this gave me so much angst. I love angsty emotional roller coaster rides and this was transported really well.
But I also didn't feel it. I missed the moment she started developing a huge crush, that turned into more and more, the worse he turned out to be.

It helps that I was introduced to Johnny being great, easy to be around and when he opened his heart about his family and Christian, he seemed not to bad. But I didn't get the attraction. Why would she fall for someone who has a mean girlfriend, drinks, does drugs and groupies and had these random mood changes? And she doesn't even give him a hard time, being all understanding. At least it's not described as good times and he sees that he's turning into his father.

I was constantly thinking about how much I hate it. Not the book as such, I loved the language, humor and style, most of the characters, how there was constantly something happening and it moved quickly, but the way he behaves and she understands. At least, she didn't understand herself.

I read these two books in one sitting and absolutely loved every minute.

In Johnny Be Good we meet Meg Stiles. Megs is offered the dream of PA to Johnny Jefferson, the man of the moment……. uuber hot rockstar extraordinaire.

Megs leaves from her home in London to start a new life in LA, working for Johnny and putting up with all his crazy antics, all the while trying to convince herself she won’t fall for him. Oh good luck with that Megs! Of course she does and what follows is a fun, and at times touching story of the relationship between these two.

Don’t worry. This isn’t the…Johnny sees Megs and changes his ways in five minutes story. Johnny is set on self- destructive. He’s your stereotypical rock star…booze, drugs and women. They’re his addiction and Johnny has a hard time leaving any of them alone. There were many a times I uttered “oh no Johnny, you didn’t” when Johhny royally screwed up and many a time my heart went out to Megs.

Megs is lonely. She left her life and her friends behind and working for Johnny and having the feelings she does just makes her sadder and lonelier than ever. Her one confidant is Johnny’s closest friend, Christian, who he has known since his childhood days in London.

Christian is in town to write an autobiography on Johnny and Megs and Christan form a friendship which leaves her conflicted in her feelings between Johnny and Christian.

To say Johnny gives you whiplash is an understatement. One minute he is sweet, beautiful Johnny then the next minute he’s drunken, drug laden, womanising Johnny and you want to slap him.

I sooo wanted to dislike Johnny because of what he puts Megs through but I couldn’t. I loved Johnny Jefferson…he’s your quinteissetnial hot bad boy rock star and I loved him…..with all his flaws and shortcomings I still loved him.

I really did like Megs. I loved the humor she had and the way she handled situations though I did want her to stand up to Johnny more. I wanted her to stop letting him treat her the way he did and tell him how she felt.

I absolutely enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down. It does end on a cliffhanger but at least you have book two Baby Be Mine to dive straight into

OK, the writing was good, and the plot was so-so. But the characters! oh my god, I found myself hating them! Johnny is a cruel, sadistic, fucking prick and a serial cheater! Meg is an idiot. Christian is a bore. I absolutely hated Johnny's behavior (oh so much) and Meg's indecisiveness.

And did I mention I fucking hated all the fucking cheating!!

I did, however, like the writing and was quickly addicted. I stayed up all night reading this in one sitting because... well, for one, I didn't want to leave it on a bad note and so I kept reading hoping for a happy moment to leave it on for the night (never happened) and two, because I liked the wit and banter between Chris and Meg. I really liked their play during the book. But I didn't like them together.

The two main reasons I hate this book are that I can't stand Johnny (the drugs/drinking/cheating) and this book was depressing! It left a very bad taste in my mouth. I also found this book to be rather boring. There was so much packed into it that needn't have been, and glazing over what should have been in it. The tension/attraction between hero and heroine didn't really draw me in either. And the end about bored me to tears (and then pissed me off).

And the reason I give it 2 stars instead of 1 is that I did like the writing style, the descriptions of places and spaces was really well done, and I loved the character banter. That's the reason I kept reading this book even though I HATED every situation, every circumstance, and every decision in this book.

Did anyone really like this book? It's the trashiest. Meg was shallow. Obsessed with Johnny and no personality otherwise. Johnny was an exaggerated caricature of a moody alcoholic drug addled rock star. Christian was a wet flannel of a human being. Not sure why anyone would care about him. Meg certainly doesn't seem to - she barely describes him to start with, and later on reiterates several times that he's average looking and that's about it.

Could've had interesting meditations on dealing with and working for a junkie. Or about celebrity lifestyles. About the culture shock of going from London to LA, the culture shock of suddenly being thrown into the deep end of the music business. About homesickness, even when you feel like you haven't got much of a home to return to. Nary a hint at any of this, Meg's too busy drooling over Johnny's fucking abs. I mean, I know I'm in the wrong genre here for anything in depth but a passing remark or two wouldn't have gone amiss.

Oh I loved this book! Paige Toon is always a safe bet and I usually save her books for sitting in the sun…glad I read this now! Loved Meg and Johnny’s story and cannot wait to dive into book 2!
