Ruby Johnson used to live on Manhattan's West 74th Street, with her parents. This is a very exclusive area, but the family lost everything, including their home, due to her father’s gambling. Her father disappeared leaving Ruby and her mother to deal with the aftermath.

Now she works on that very street as a maid to some of the wealthy families, but she hates not being ‘one of them’. Ruby knows all their precious secrets, so when she witnesses a murder in one of the homes, she sees an opportunity to make some cash and change her mother’s life - and her own!

Ruby knows the victim, and the killer, and so it is that she makes an anonymous call to the police and names the killer, but she’s telling a lie, and, as we eventually find out, she has a very good reason for doing so!

Eddie Flynn, conman turned lawyer, represents the man who Ruby named, and let’s not forget that this guy is completely innocent. However, Ruby is intelligent and extremely devious - she has some big plans and will endeavour to ensure that he is found guilty of murder in order to start her new life.

Eddie Flynn is not your average lawyer, he can be completely reckless, and plays dirty if he needs to, but you’d definitely want him in your corner.
Lots of twists and turns and a cold and clinical character in the guise of Mr Christmas (a name normally associated with love and joy) no sir, not on this occasion! Recommended.

Fantastically entertaining yarn from Mr Cavanagh and as good an Eddie Flynn book as we’ve had.

Ruby is a nanny in a very posh part of Manhattan in a house on 74th street. As an ex resident of the area and a good observer, Ruby knows all the gossip and people on the street.

On the way home one evening she witnesses a murder in one of the neighbours house and sees the murderer flee. She knows instantly who the murderer is.

There’s one issue with Ruby. She’s not normal. She calls the police to report the murder but she doesn’t tell the truth and points the finger at someone closer to home.

Eddie and his team are hired to defend the innocent man but with overwhelming evidence against him they are fighting an uphill battle.

As Eddie tries to unravel the web of lies, he gets more than he’s bargained for as he finds himself not only trying to defend an innocent life but his own life is in danger as he pokes his nose in places it shouldn’t be.

What a fantastically enjoyable read this was. Loads of fun. Loads of twists and turns and a fantastic character by the name of Mr Christmas.

The twists and turns here, unlike many other books, serve a purpose to the story and aren’t there just to be red herrings. The plotting and pacing here is top notch.

If you’ve enjoyed the other Flynn books then you will love this one. An utter joy to read.

An easy five stars from me.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

Ex conman turned criminal defence lawyer, Eddie Flynn is back in book 8, with Witness 8. Another dark and twisty legal thriller that I powered through. Eddie and his team are always a joy to read about, always surprising and clever. If I was in trouble, I would want an Eddie on my side.

This time Eddie is defending a renowned brain surgeon on a murder charge. One of his wealthy neighbours have been murdered, and Ruby Johnson, a nanny and maid for the rich, saw who did it. She called the police with an anonymous tip, but she lied. And now she is using this to her advantage. At the same time, somebody has put a hit out on Eddie. He certainly has his hands full.

Set in New York City, we have fabulous courtroom scenes which are my favourites to read. We also follow Ruby as she sets her plans in motion. Will she get away with it, read it and see.

Thanks so much to Hachette Australia for my advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on August 13th.

Thank-you so much to Headline for sending me the ARC!

It took me nearly 3 WEEKS to read this book 😭 after a slow and uneventful 120 pages, I was tempted to DNF but pressed on figuring it had to speed up. That didn’t happen.

3⭐️ is purely for the writing and select quirky characters I enjoyed. Mr Christmas and Tony Two Fucks 🥹 if only we had the Lizard, would have been a real party.

But there was way too much going on in this. I can count at least 6 POV’s and I’m probably missing some. The pov jumping slowed down the pacing and disrupted any kind of suspense built. And most of them were completely unnecessary.

I can see what Steve Cav tried to do with Ruby. But a shitty childhood doesn’t redeem you or give a hall-pass for your actions.

Also, shockingly so for a Steve Cav, but not a single plot twist 🫢😐 no surprises here.

Underwhelming read.

3.5/4

It's been a while since I read a Steve Cavanagh but I seem to remember enjoying it. I enjoyed bits of Witness 8 as well and the trial was really good.

The story started out quite explosively then settled into a convoluted murder and trial that ran alongside Eddie Flynn trying to dodge several assassins.

The main story deals with the murder of a socialite living in a fancy part of New York. The suspect, John Jackson, is a family man who denies the charge from the beginning but as the evidence mounts a witness comes forward to say they saw the whole thing.

On the whole it's a good story. However I'm notorious at not knowing what's going to happen next and it didn't take me long to work it out.

Apart from that I didn't really buy into the characters of Ruby or Mr Christmas who both felt very two dimensional. However the niggles are few and minor ones at that.

I'd recommend this for Eddie Flynn fans or just an enjoyable, fast-paced holiday read.

If you have read any previous books in the Eddie Flynn series then you know what to expect from the leading man and you also know the story will be good

I have to admit to being sporadic in my efforts to read all the series but it seriously didn’t make any difference, I think a first time reader coming into the series would enjoy it just as much as a series devotee

Set in Manhatten in one of the most salabruis streets, a dastardly deed is done, witnessed by no one….or so the culprit thinks

Eddie Flynn is ace, other Characters are generally great, aside from Tony two 😎 and the courtroom scenes fiery and clever and absorbing

Mr Christmas is chilling

Really good read as had expected it would be

Another brilliant book in the Eddie Flynn series.

Not a lot I can say about this one other than if you like the previous Eddie Flynn novels, you will love this one too. Cavanagh never strays too far from a winning formula but it will be interesting to see how far he can take Flynn without the novels becoming too formulaic. I think Cavanagh keeps it interesting at the moment, with some new characters and his trademark hook and twists, and here's to many more.

This is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ! 😍 (I am not biased honest! 🤣)

Another fabulous book in the Eddie Flynn series. I always know when I pick up one of Steve Cavanagh's books that I am going to be highly entertained and I have never been disappointed.

Ruby is a nanny and works for wealthy clients in Manhattan. On her way home one day she witnesses a murder, another of her clients by the name of Margaret Blackmore. She then contacts police without revealing her identity and gives them this information naming a particular person for the crime, the only problem is Ruby is providing false information and she has major secrets of her own of which she does not wish anyone to find out.

Now Eddy and the team have the fight of their lives on their hands, trying to get an innocent man off a murder charge. As always the book moves a long at a fast pace and is very hard to put down. Clever storytelling that will completely engage you and keep you interested from the first page, another winner. Now the eternal wait for another from this fabulous author.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions are my own.

I’m one of Eddie Flynn’s biggest fans- I always devour Steve Cavanagh’s Conman turned Defence Lawyer series in a matter of hours so I was overjoyed to receive Witness 8 as a review copy. Even better I was on an overnight flight from the US to London and I had something to entertain me. No small screen movies for me and very little sleep! I just couldn’t put this book down!
Eddie is called upon to defend a paediatric brain surgeon accused of murder but it is obvious he is innocent to everyone except the DA! He has been framed! Who has done this and moreover why? Eddie has to find out before John Jackson is wrongly convicted.
Not only does Eddie have to deal with this but he’s also become the target of hitmen and has to try and avoid being killed. He has to use all his wits and his conman skills from his past life to try and work out who’s targeting him and again find out why!
This book is “unputadownable” - is that even a word? It certainly applies to Witness 8!
The plot moves at a cracking pace and the reader is kept on their toes as the author tells the story from the point of view of different characters including Eddie, Ruby who is John Jackson’s family Nanny, , Kate, Eddie’s work partner, Mr Christmas, a mysterious hitman to name but a few. They are all well drawn and add interesting perspectives to the story. How do all these strands and characters come together by the end of the book? I couldn’t wait to find out.
Anyway, I urge you to rush out and buy Witness 8 on 1 August when it is published- it will make a great holiday read and as I personally found, it will entertain you on any flight!
I recommend it as a five star read.

Another great read from Steve Cavanagh.
Eddie and the team are asked to represent a surgeon who has been accused of murder.
As always Eddie needs to look him in the eye to get the sense of whether he’s innocent or not, and in his view, he’s not a killer.
We also follow Ruby who is the one who made the call about the murder, but it’s clear she’s up to something. She works for the rich and wealthy and as the story progresses we find out more about her life.
Eddie and Bloch get into trouble as usual and there’s lots of twists and turns in this book to keep you hooked.
Another great book from Steve Cavanagh.
Thanks to Headline and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

A pediatric brain surgeon is accused of murdering a neighbour. Adamant that he is innocent the only thing standing between John Jackson and a life behind bars is lawyer Eddie Flynn, and a scheming witness.

Fans of the Eddie Flynn series will be well aware that despite all the predicaments he ends up in Eddie uses his cunning to defeat even the toughest foe. This time around author Steve Cavanagh has set up a storyline where Eddie seems to have met his match, in more ways than one. Witness 8 has Eddie facing a number of adversaries and placed in what seems to be an unwinnable position.

When a murder takes place in a wealthy suburb of New York the murderer flees, disposing of the murder weapon nearby. Ruby Johnson, a part-time nanny and cleaner for some of the wealthy residents is the only witness. Rather than report the crime Ruby decides to retrieve the murder weapon and use it for her own ends. We begin to realise that Ruby is unpleasant, the more we read on we discover she's manipulative and constantly scheming. There are times when her behaviour is unsettling and I was convinced she was suffering from a dissociative identity disorder. What is unclear is how and why Ruby is framing one of her employers, John Jackson.

Wealthy clients hire high-end legal firms, but the lawyer hired by John Jackson knows that in order for his client to stand a chance in what appears to be an unwinnable case something, or someone, special is required. The firm turns to Eddie Flynn and his associates. Having previously been a con artist Eddie is an expert at reading people and thinking outside the box; he's not averse to playing outside the rules either and we witness this early on when he defends a client and ends up embarrassing a police officer in the process.

What Eddie doesn't realise is that the police officer involved works for a criminal gang and they are upset that Flynn has disrupted one of their financial scams. Determined that it won't happen again they put a price on Eddie's head.

It becomes a case of cat-and-mouse as Eddie has to contend with having a target on his back while trying to solve the puzzles of who the actual murderer is and how he's going to save his client. While all of this is happening Ruby Johnson continues her scheming and a hit-man with a strange code of ethics zeros in on Eddie. I began to worry that Eddie had met his match with two such formidable opponents, particularly when a devastating event takes place. I was truly convinced that this was the end for Eddie, however, we know he's a fighter and even at his lowest ebb he refuses to give up. Author Steve Cavanagh keeps the tension going right up to the last moment and has fans nervous about the conclusion.

It has been a while since I have read a Eddie Flynn book so I have missed a few in the series. This latest one, Witness 8, reads well as a standalone book and some things have happened that the author mentions but doesn't go into detail about. This does not spoil the reading of this addictive courtroom and investigation thriller.

Eddie Flynn has made an enemy, it won't be the first and I don't imagine for a moment that this will be his last. He discovers he has a target on his back, and while it will hamper his latest case, it will not stop him from doing all he can to represent his client. Eddie has a past and while it should not shine well on his career as a lawyer, it does stand him in good stead for what he is going up against now. He generally keeps his past in the past, but it does crop up occasionally.

A surgeon is accused of killing a woman, and the murder weapon is found on his premises. John Jackson is not someone who you would associate as being a murderer, his wife stands by him and they try to protect their son and also their reputations and standing in the local community.

Ruby, she is a witness but she is not truthful. She is manipulative but in her head, there is a good reason for bending the truth the way she has. It is only a matter of time before the truth comes out, but who will remain standing?

This is another amazing book in the series and it reads so well, I wish I had kept up with the series, but at least I have managed to read the latest one so it's still good. The author has such a good way of using his characters. The main one of Eddie is great, he is devious and sly in the way he approaches things, but he only supports innocent clients. That makes him special.

This was such a quick book to get into, a dramatic start and one that kept me hooked. There are many twists and turns and some unexpected moments that I didn't see coming. I think this has been very cleverly put together, with some great characters and some shady ones as well. Even though this is a murder story, there is a strange sense of doing the right thing wound within this one, it makes for an exciting read.

If you are looking for a courtroom and investigative thriller then this is one to keep an eye out for. I adored this book and I would definitely recommend it.

Another great Eddie Flynn book, I do hope the author doesn’t stop writing them. Eddie is a con artist turned lawyer who uses tricks in the courtroom and is always brilliant. In this book, he has to overcome an innocent client, threats to his own life and Ruby, who is muddying all of the water with an agenda of her own. I missed a bit of Eddie being very clever in court but I did like the character of Mr Christmas and hope we get to meet him again. Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC.

My Review

It is no secret I LOVE Eddie Flynn, if you are new to him do yourself a favour and go and read the previous books then this one. You absolutely can read this as a standalone but it is book 8 of an absolutely fantastic series so read the others if you haven't yet! Right, Eddie is a lawyer, previous conman (but not a bad guy like he never done anything to good people) now a lawyer who only represents innocent people. Having previously had a foot in the "underworld" he has an advantage over other lawyers and whilst they are often slimy/shady and some more crooked than the folks they represent - Eddie is a good guy with unconventional contacts at his disposal.

So Eddie is representing a guy accused of murdering someone in his neighbourhood, his posh affulent neighbourhood. Crème de la crème, he is a skilled rich surgeon and the victim is a rich wife who is known to have had many a dalliance with other married men. Someone witnessed the murder, they called it in anonymously and they have their own agenda, enter Ruby. Ruby is a nanny/maid to the rich and who knows all of their business and often secrets, how they operate because Ruby used to be one of them. Now instead of being a wealthy neighbour she works in the house she used to live in and the neighbouring houses. Ruby has fingered the wrong guy intentionally , Ruby has motives and reasons that only she knows. Ruby will have what she wants, she is master of a deadly game that noone but her knows they are playing.

Oooft talk about shady characters! The chapters jump between Ruby (the nanny) and Eddie and co as they try to work out a defense but when the prosecution have their killer and a seemingly bullet proof case Eddie and co sure have their work cut out. And in true Eddie fashion (trouble seems to follow him) they unknowingly shake up a hornets nest and soon they don't just have to look out for their clients!

Action packed but if you know the series this isn't a surprise, investigation and weeding through the facts and evidence of the case. Trying to prove the seemingly unprovable, odds stacked against them but Eddie's team are some of the best, sometimes not the most stable folks, some from the underworld and they work well together, often uphill battles.

Jaw dropping, frustrating characters, shocking behaviours, emotive, skulduggery characters, murder, bad guys and some very unstable people. Jumping between Eddie and Co and Ruby, the chapters flow seamlessly, when we were on Eddie I didn't want to leave, when we were on Ruby I didn't want to leave. Had work/life not gotten in the way I would have read this in one sitting. Gripping, keeping you on the edge of your seat, desperate to fly through it and see where it is going but not wanting it to end because it is just too fricken good!

I eagerly await the next Flynn book(s) with baited breath, I would LOVE to see him on screen (although someone asked me who I pictured when reading him and I am one of those who don't visual my characters as I go), I would need to think. I think what makes them such gripping reads/beloved is they aren't white as snow characters, they have flaws but they work together for the greater good. Eddie has often stood for the underdog and many a times we meet a pompous or read nasty character, often in the courtroom and Eddie brings them down a peg or two, I LOVE THAT. He is just a good dude, I could talk about him/this series all day, no surprises 5/5 for me this time. When you think you know where it is going - you just don't, for being on book 8 I do worry sometimes picking them up, will it have lost its magic? Absolutely not, fresh, page turning, fabulous and some scenes make you feel a bit Annie Wilkes lmao, if you know you know. I cannot recommend this book (and series) enough. Out to buy 1st of August but you can pre order now, moan Eddie, get them!

On her way home from one of her many nannying jobs in the prestigious West 74th Street, Manhattan she is the only single witness to the murder of Margaret Blakemore, another client of hers. No one sees Ruby, even when she is working in their own homes. She works for several of the families on this block, and knows some of their darkest secrets. Knowing the identity of the killer, she calls the police and tells them what she saw anonymously, but the name she gives isn’t the right one, because Ruby also has secrets of her own, ones she wants to keep no matter what.

When Eddie and Kate are called to defend a man innocent of murder the evidence against him is damming - can Eddie, Kate and the rest of the team find the true identity of the killer before an innocent man is sent to prison? This isn’t the only thing Eddie has to worry about, the ex conman always has to watch his back, as you can guarantee there’s more to this story than meets the eye, and it could be catastrophic for everyone.

Before I even started reading I had already given this book 5 stars, and by god I was right! I’m such a big fan of Steve’s books since discovering the Eddie Flynn series a few years ago, and now as soon as I get wind of another book coming out, I’m right there with the pre order! I was keeping this for my holiday in July, but I knew I had it sitting there on my kindle so I couldn’t resist! I literally have no idea how Steve comes up with the things that Eddie gets himself into, and how he gets out of them is nothing short of genius! I love the way that you are fed little bits of info through the story which leaves you wondering why did he do that? So without saying too much, the diner and the chewing gum are just two of many! By now, we have really seen all the characters grow into their own, developing deeper personalities and showing different sides of themselves. We even see a slight glimmer of emotion from Bloch! (Again can’t say why for fear of spoilers!) and Ruby, what a complex character she is, and so well written! The storyline is excellent as always, Steve is such a brilliant writer, how he can write in the style of an American so well is just pure talent on its own, without all the additional parts like the unique storytelling, the way the books hook you in from the first page, and everything is really clear and well explained to the reader in regards to the American legal terminology. One of my favourite series, and one of my favourite writers! Fabulous read, really enjoyed it, definitely goes far beyond expectations!

I can’t really say anymore without ruining the story, apart from if you’re an Eddie Flynn fan, or even a reading fan, you’ll love this!

Welcome back, Eddie Flynn. I really love this series. I enjoy the way Eddie Flynn and his team work out their investigations. Flynn is an ex conman, so he knows how a cons brain works. And, he uses this knowledge to his advantage.

Diving into an Eddie Flynn series is like having a family reunion. It's time to catch up on how the regulars are doing and obviously see if they will get their defendant out of jail.

I say this all the time. It's best to read a series from the start so that you can get to know the regular characters better. Their traits, their quirks, and just how they gey along with each other. That way, you become invested in their lives and want to know if they are fine or not. I'm being very vague there 😉

Witness 8 focuses on Ruby Johnson. She has witnessed a murder. The done thing would be to report it. But, not for Ruby. She sees a way of cashing in on this. And, she plays a very deadly game. Eddie and his team are defending the person that Ruby claims to be the murderer. Who will come out on top?

And, if you think that is enough to tend with. Well, there's someone out there a bit cheesed off with Flynn. Will he survive?

Witness 8 was a well paced thriller. And I am very chuffed with myself that I actually figured out a key piece of evidence before the brains of Flynn and Kate

I could just keep this short and sweet and say Cavanagh nails it again. Eddie has a ransom on his head, and killers on his tail. Something bad happens to one of his misfit ‘renegade’ family. A family nanny with Machiavellian tendencies, weirdly befriended by a hitman with Santa pretensions. A sticky court case, an assortment of suspects, and Flynn and his team having to rely on their wits and street smarts to defend their client. Oh and keep Eddie from being assassinated…

As in every previous review for this marvellous series, Cavanagh pulls it pout of the bag again, in terms of tension, plotting, red herrings, nifty tricks and teases, and some first class reveals. I can tell you nothing more definitive about the plot, without revealing some crucial spoilers, but suffice to say, you’re gonna like this one. Very much. The characterisation is spot on, from Tony Two F… to sassy Denise, to the clinically focussed Kate, the wily Bloch, and series stalwart ex-judge Harry Ford. I am very intrigued by Gabriel Lake, and like his addition to Eddie’s merry if slightly dysfunctional band. There’s humour, drama, derring-do, more drama, and it’s just a great piece of storytelling. Another pitch perfect addition to this excellent series.

Loved it.

Highly recommended.

Eddie Flynn and his team are back and ready to defend a man falsely accused of murder. Ruby is a nanny to wealthy families in a Manhattan street. It is there that she witnesses a neighbour’s murder and she knows the killer so she makes an anonymous call to police. Is Ruby telling the truth or is she more dangerous than the killer?

I was very excited to see a new Eddie Flynn book out as it is one of my most anticipated series. I kept putting off starting this because I knew that I would then be closer to the end and I’d have to wait ages for a new one! This is another excellent addition, full of the usual twists, high octane drama and clever plot. It was great to catch up with the characters as they are superbly written, powerful and you really feel a connection with them all; I especially enjoy their relationships and humorous moments with one another. There were some great minor characters here too!

This novel saw a few different storylines working intricately together and had some very suspenseful moments, although there were also emotional elements. I love that this series offers things that seem irrelevant but are often integral to the plot and the creative ways around problems. The twists are always clever and not random as they are in some other books. This was another highly entertaining courtroom thriller by this talented author; I’m just sad I now have to wait for another! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.

What an absolute cracker of a book. A real fast-paced page turner.
Ruby is the nanny to rich parents on the street to where Ruby used to live with her parents. Until her father gambled all their possessions and house away.
Ruby witnesses a murder. She knows both the victim and the perpetrator. She calls.the police anonymously and gives them the name of the murderer.
But is Ruby telling the truth, and if not, why is she lying?
This is an Eddie Flynn book, and I'm sure many will be familiar with him and the other characters.
This is my first book by Cavanagh, and I absolutely loved it.
It didn't matter that I hadn't read any of the previous books as you got a bit of back story on each character.
Each chapter is from the pov of each character, and they are quite short, so you just want to keep turning the pages.
Even though I got why Ruby was doing what she was doing for a good reason, I really didn't like her and wanted her to get caught.
I loved how Eddie seemed to be one step ahead of Casto, dirty tactics, but I loved the courtroom drama.
If the previous books are half as good as this one, I shall have to read them all.
Finally, the twist at the end. Loved it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Headline for the ARC in return for an honest review.

Steve Cavanagh is back with an Eddie Flynn story that will force you to turn paste after page in the anticipation of the next plot twist! Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.

I found this book very entertaining. The plot is not as tight as some of his other works but it is good enough for you to not be distracted. I am enjoying Kate's character development as this series progresses. She was always presented as a formidable woman but she is coming into her own with tight cross examinations, learning some of Eddie's ways and making a space for herself in this world.

My one criticism here is that the courtroom drama section is reduced to the last quarter of the book. This series is partly great because of the interesting courtroom scenes and I was slightly let down in that aspect. But if you enjoy the Eddie Flynn series as a whole you will enjoy this installment as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the next book in the Eddie Flynn series. He's always up to no good and using his sneaky tricks to get him to where he needs to be to succeed as a lawyer. Yes, they may not always be the best choices but somehow they always manage to work out (thanks to Cavanagh obviously). There is a good amount of action, though the chapters jump between so many characters that you really have to concentrate to ensure you remember whose chapter you're reading. Generally though, a good amount of action and of course lots of murders as per usual, but it kept me interested throughout!

What a terrific read – plot, sub-plots, counterplots, with more twists and turns than a Cornish road. I haven’t read any of Steve Cavanagh’s books before – my loss. Some wonderful characters – Lake, Kate, Bloch, just three of his loyal team, Then there is Harry, Eddie Flynn’s mentor and close friend … a special man. Two Fucks Tony is just one of Flynn’s colourful network of ‘aides’. And of course, Ruby … and her bonding with Mr Christmas. All with depth and believability.
The interconnectedness of those in the legal system and the law, including the wrong side of the law, offers Cavanagh plenty of opportunity for guile, humour, beating others at their own game, as well as delivering an oh-so-readable book.
How lucky was I to have an ARC of this five-star novel, courtesy of Headline and Netgalley?
