A collection of love poems showing the ups and the downs of love. The book uses various forms of poetry and comes from the heart. The reader will feel with the author as they read the poems.
Poetry is like art. I know what I like when I see it, or in the case of a collection of poetry, Dreams of Love, when I read it. It’s difficult to believe that Pamela has not been writing poetry for years, that she has only recently engaged in the art: Difficult because her poems are so well done, both in form and meaning. She experiments in various forms, including etheree and tanka, and the poems coalesce to form what could be a short story, or a collection of stories. Each poem meditates on love: the desire for it, the joy of it, or the heartbreak of it. As I read these poems I imagined a couple first falling in love with all the newness and excitement that a new love brings. Then discord: he leaves her, or is she disillusioned with him? Does it matter? Only that the pain of separation is so clearly evoked. But the collection ends with a bit of hope, with the last poem, “A Lover’s Spat.” How often have any of us had “spats” with our loved ones that we thought surely were the end of the relationship, only to find that it was only an “unnecessary quarrel,” a “misunderstanding,” that “It’s all part of love.” These poems read as if Pamela has been writing poetry for years, deep within herself, perhaps unknown to herself. Fortunately for her readers, she is now publishing her poetry so we can all share in the pleasure of it.
This is a beautiful and at times heart-wrenching journey through love. The way in which the poems are arranged take you on a journey through the different emotions of love. I know I could feel the emotions she was conveying as if they were my own. They poems are raw and real. I look forward to more from this amazingly talented poet!
I love poetry, but I have only a small handful of favourite poets, and Pamela Beckford is most definitely one of them. It’s difficult enough to convey emotions through the pages of a novel, but much more so with the small amount of words in a poem. After reading them through, I keep poetry books that I love, such as this one, and often revisit when I’m feeling in need of a little calm or peace. Excellent poetry gives you that.
Pamela Beckford has that unique and empathetic talent to translate the powerful feelings that we all feel at times during our lives into words, an amazing gift to tell you an entire story in a single paragraph, and the courage to lay bare her soul so that you may gaze into your own. From unrequited love to forbidden love, and all the passion and pain in between, these beautiful words brought memories fond and not so fond, but I loved every soul soaring and sometimes gut wounding word. I absolutely recommend this book to everyone who has a heart – I intend to keep it forever.
That singular word – breathtaking – is the best one-word description of “Dreams of Love” by Pamela Beckford that kept coming to mind as I lingered within the pages. “Dreams of Love” is a superb collection.
