Overall, issue #2 is once again brimming with plot, which makes the pacing of these pages feel a little uneven. While this fits the mood conveyed by the issue's story, it also means that some solutions don't come across as entirely satisfying. Still, I liked that Scott uses a couple of pages to give more depth to the bond between Keeve and Sskeer, making the ending more emotionally poignant. Definitely looking forward to where this series is going and the reveals we're about to get!

I enjoyed this one a lot. Had some great action, a big reveal and a very haunted ending 👻 The dark and grim aesthetic of Phase 3 fits perfectly to the Jedi trying to hold up the light while being ultimately surrounded by darkness. A beautiful masterpiece.

“All things die. All but the Force.”

Lourna Dee is working with the Hutts! Terec's ship was shot down! Keeve, captured!

This series continues to be intriguing. The art is wonderful and it's cool to see more of the Hutt cartel in this time. They too are forced to adapt to the new status quo and decide whether to side with the Nihil or the Republic. I'm very intrigued to see where the story goes from now - the cliffhanger at the end of this issue was really cool and made me so pumped for issue 3. Scott really knows how to hook his readers!

While the plot is okay, what makes this series for me is the cast. It's so good to be back with these characters. I'm especially happy to be with Keeve again, as she is someone who, while I might not be nuts about her character, I really appreciate as a character and a point of view character. I like how she's grown throughout the phases and how far she has come from the girl we see in this issue's flashbacks: that girl who was riddled with self-doubt and didn't understand why Sskeer would want her as his padawan. Sskeer and Keeve are a very cool master&padawan duo, and seeing even glimpses of their past is wonderful. Lourna is also one of my favorite villains in THR, so having her back is also super cool.

The Child of the Storm is a creepy new addition to the cast of High Republic villains, and I am already eager to learn more about him and how he became the Nihil's Jedi hunter. We get a little bit of backstory for him, but I hope we see more in future issues and books.

Can't wait for issue 3!

Marvel’s Star Wars: The High Republic #2 (Phase III) brings back a fan favorite character

When the first issue of Marvel’s Phase III of Star Wars: The High Republic revealed that (spoiler) Lourna Dee had survived and returned not as a member of the Nihil but as part of Skarabda the Hutts forces, I was surprised but glad. During Phase I, I enjoyed the journey that we got to go on with Dee’s character through the books, comics, and audio dramas. It was a great, unexpected return.

It did not prepare me for the even more unexpected reveal at the end of book number two. There will be some spoilers ahead.

There was a handful of really cool stuff in this book, and I always enjoy Cavan Scott’s work. His stories have been continually great and not just in the High Republic.

I really liked the body suits/armor worn by the Republic soldiers in this. The grey with blue trim look was a nice combination. I also liked them being useful and nuts just fodder.

The Jedi finally caught two massive breaks in their battle against the Nihil and investigation into the Nameless. Not only did they capture one of Marchion Ro’s experiments in a Child of the Storm, but Terec killed a Nameless monster. Is this the break they’ve been looking for?

Then, at the end of the book, we get the reveal that the big man himself Sskeer is alive and well. As described by one of the Child of the Storm, “But I saw him for who he was. Trandoshan scum. A devil. A monster.” Sskeer was an absolute unit in the Phase I appearances he made, and I can’t wait to get more of him.

As a “good” Trandoshan, he’s a rare site in Star Wars, and it was great learning more about his species and afflictions. More Sskeer!

How did he survive? What’s he been up to? Will he continue to survive? Don’t break my heart too hard here, Cavan.

Ahhhhh The High Republic, such a source of entertainment over the last few years, I was going to say a source of joy, but whilst I love reading it, so often what happens is devastating so would go that far 😅🥺

It's nice to see Keeve Trennis as youngling and as a freshly picked Padawan and Skeer at the height of his powers. Issue 3 of the series is worth it for that alone.
