It pays to be nice... but only if you’re into blood, pain, and tears.
Beck Wyatt, a witch with very few f*cks to give, is back in action, and as usual, her life has gone pear-shaped. Her maybe-boyfriend has gone MIA. One of her bffs fell into a big hole and got Lifeflighted to the hospital. The cops want to help her solve a kidnapping with a side helping of murder. Even worse? Her recently un-estranged mom wants to have brunch.
There’s also a homicidal deer.
It turns out there’s witchery involved in the murder/kidnapping, and a certain asshat detective has spilled the beans about Beck’s powers. Now she’s looking for a killer. Trouble is, the killer might be looking for her too.
Beck’s about to learn that no good deed goes unpunished, and nice is just another word for victim.
I was raised on a cattle ranch in Northern California (outside a town called Lincoln which is now part of an enormous sprawl). I taught myself to ride a horse at the age of six, as no one had the time to teach me—they were all busy learning how to irrigate, how to cajole an angry bull into another field, how to pull a calf… Afraid of heights, and absolutely sure I was going to die, I managed to scramble up on the back of a very patient and lazy strawberry roan destrier, and plod off into the sunset.
Thereafter, I spent much of my early life on horseback, or so far buried into a book that the rest of the world ceased to exist (much to the annoyance of my family—it took several attempts to get my attention). We all had very specific jobs on the ranch and mine was horses and cattle—out rounding up at dawn. And since I rode bareback, my standing request was to wake me up 5 minutes before everyone else headed for the barn—time enough to dress and eat my Wheaties, and no sleep time wasted on saddling.
After high school, I attended college after college, racking up a BA and MA in creative writing and a Ph.D. in literature and theory. My very patient and supportive husband traipsed across the Midwest and back to Montana for me (though my husband insists that he’s been running and hiding and I just keep finding him), where I now teach at the University of Montana-Western. We also a son Q-ball, who in our humbly unbiased opinions, is the most wonderful son ever produced, and a daughter, Princess Caesar, who is the most wonderful daughter ever produced.
I have a fascination for the Victorians, weather, geology, horses, plants and mythology, I like spicy food, chocolate and cheesecake, and I have an odd sense of humor. (Or so I’ve been told. Often.) Incidentally, the Pharaoh is in fact my real name, and oddly enough, is of British origin.
Some of my current favorite sf/f writers are Ilona Andrews, Carol Berg, C.E. Murphy, Patty Briggs, Lynn Flewelling, Rachel Caine, David Coe, and Anne Bishop.
I just finished the third book in this series, and I so very much hope that there’ll be more in this series. Beck is such a great character, and I just love all the side characters. This latest is so much fun. We learn more about Beck’s family and their past, we see her once again put herself in harm’s way, and we have fun watching her figure out her love life. All in all, I have so much enjoyed this series, and I’d love to learn more about Beck, Damon, Jen..heck all of the characters. They are so interesting and fun. This is a great addition to the series, well-written, engaging, and fun. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Diana Pharaoh Francis has a new adventure about untrained but powerful witch Beck Wyatt. One detective had learned about magic in a previous adventure, and he wants her help in a kidnapping case that has two missing children. After Putting the Ice in Nice (ebook from Lucky Foot Press in conjunction with BVC) by helping a traffic accident victim, she is captured by the kidnapping witch, and discovers a whole new level of witch politics. Fun but needs a sequel to fully explain witch politics.
I hate to do this, but I can't give this a higher rating since both books 2 and 3 left us hanging. AND so far there is no book 4 on the horizon. I like the characters although they can be annoying and childish and a few times I wanted to smack main character Beck, but I could hang with them. But, with story lines just forgotten or dropped or awaiting a big fat book 4, I am peeved. My advice is to wait until more books are written before getting into them.
A big thank you to NetGalley and BVC in conjuncton with Lucky Foot Press for the eARC. I am voluntarily revieiwng this book. This is part of a series, #3, and the first that I have read, It reads well as a stand alone. I liked the book, and would recommend. It is different, I liked all the characters, Beck, Damon and Lorraine. 4 stars
I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This made me so happy in the end!! I’ve read the books that come before, and where this book started and where it ended were on wonderfully opposite sides of expectation. I was expecting a great mystery and story, and bracing for heartbreak. Instead, I got to enjoy every detail and am now looking forward to the next one.
This isn't the greatest witch story ever, but definitely readable. It's a bit short. I have not read the first two in the series but I had no trouble catching up. For people who worry about such things, there is one erotic scene, but it is easy enough to skip it.
I received a review copy of this book from the publishers through NetGalley.com.
Too much repetition from previous books, if people haven't read them, don't make others suffer for this, ending was a bit abrupt. Good cammaderie amongst friends, but felt a bit ott and hints of intolerance. Enjoyed the first book, 2nd book okay, but found third book a tad disappointing.
So much more action than book 2. I really enjoyed it. I so knew that she was getting herself in trouble and was like, don't do it, but by then, it was too late, and I just wondered how she was getting herself out. amazing. Is there more? I hope there's more. I love Beck. And Ajax and Damian... Great Book.
I enjoyed this book and the sense of friendship it detailed. There was sadness and regret but ultimately the concept of moving forward and developing your own support system, your own family was prominent. Interspersed humor kept the darkness from taking over and gave the book hope.
So happy to get another installment of this urban fantasy series. More Beck, more banter, more action, magic and romance. Stormclouds on the horizon for future books as Beck and friends decide to push back against authority.
The best review I can give is "When is the next book due out?!?!'. So much fun and snark and interesting solutions to nearly impossible situations! I loved every word!
Oh better read then I expected! Made me laugh in places but yet it kept me intrigued! I enjoyed the dynamic’s between Beck and her friends. Great read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
