Hi ya'll,

Okay, I’ve been told its bad form to rate your own book. However, it seemed wrong to release this bad boy without saying something about how I feel. So, with that …

***clears throat***

I'm excited, nervous and just plain tickled to introduce you to some imaginary people I love.

If you’ve done any beta reading for me, you know I write (and adore) young adult paranormal romance complete with purple prose and superfluous description. My favorites include characters that do a lot of longing, gazing deeply into one another’s eyes until someone falls over, brooding, glaring and sighing. Sorry, it’s simply true.

I also like adverbs.

Crux is not that book.

Crux is … well, it’s an urban story based in modern day Atlanta with a homeless girl playing the lead. I’m going to be really mean to her and send her back in time to face people like him …

Wait, there’s more! My story has this mythology and genral hotness sprinkled in …

And if you act now (and before you get all mad at me for picking on my heroine too much) I’ll send some major dude buddy to help her out …

Yeah, he’s a dog. So? Oh, right, you were expecting, maybe, a hot-model-type guy to help? Hold the phone.

If you know me at all, there’s no way I’m going to leave it there, because I still want some romance. Are you with me?

Well, our story begins with our heroine here:

Hmm, it isn't very pretty, but she gets infused with some of this:

And when she meets up with some:

... It’s all good.

The above should give you a better idea of what you’re going to experience inside the pages of Crux.

If you've read an early copy of this book, God bless you. *bows, places hand over heart* I thank you a thousand times over, and I really hope you enjoyed it. If you plan to read it in the future, I’m just so grateful. I know there are plenty of awesome YA books to choose from right now, and I appreciate, in advance, if you're taking a chance on mine.

I just want to take a second to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and kind support. I love you guys. Sometimes writing is lonely; I'm so grateful you are traveling this journey with me!

SUMMARY (50 words or less)

The moral of the story here is don’t judge a book by its cover. If I had, I would not have read. It made the book appear more juvenile than it is. The beginning was interesting but a little slow. But hang in there. It soars from there.

I was given the chance to read this book as part of the 'Read to Review' group and the reason I chose this particular one was because of the cover! Wasn't sure about the synopsis or the title but there was something about the cover that grabbed me - - - THANK GOD!

I have never read a story like this, it was a breath of fresh air, a refreshing change and a story that I really didn't want to end...

I fell instantly in love with the characters, Birdie, Grey, Kate, Scud, Jeff and even Fenris... I loved them all... I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, not predictable in any way what so ever, I'm still stunned at how some of the twists caught me unaware... so original!!!

Birdie's life changes from what Izzy would say 'orphan Annie' to something slightly different, something I won't spoil at all... I read the first few pages not quite sure what I was getting myself into but something captured me almost instantly... The pull of the plot deepened as Birdie meets Grey and his family and together they 'work' alongside Jeff (work not being the correct word, but again, I won't spoil this).

I have to say that this book is definately worth reading, I totally and utterly loved it and I am left wanting to read more about Birdie and Grey...

Julie Reece, you have just jumped onto my 'favourite author' shelf, you have written a wonderful book, one that I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone!

REVIEW: So here's the thing: I usually know a 5-star book within the first couple of chapters. A 5-star book is, first and foremost, a page-turner. I have to care about the characters, who cannot annoy me or seem fake or typical. A 5-star book is unique and stands strong above books that are simply "good." Five-star books do not have to be best-sellers, but they are written in such a way to appeal to any reader, despite his or her genre preference. Put simply, five-star books are storytelling magic.

Without a doubt, Crux is a solid 5-star book. I'll be honest--urban fantasy is not a genre I'm crazy about. But when I started reading Crux on my Nook during a five-hour car trip, I was entranced from the very first page. I could not put it down! Birdie and love-interest Grey are some of the most-likeable characters I've met in recent reads; Birdie is tough, street-smart, funny, and knows herself well. She is beautiful but truly does not care--she has much bigger worries than her physical looks. Best of all, I actually liked her--she isn't annoying AT ALL. Grey is her smokin' hot counterpart who is adamant about joining Birdie on her journey, despite Birdie's numerous objections and attempts to lose him. I love how Birdie truly seems to want Grey to go away for his own good; she does not pretend or make it easy for him to stay with her. She does what she does to protect his normal life, and, surprisingly, her motives and actions are totally believable.

The nonstop action is unpredictable. I really never knew what was coming next and constantly wondered if the three men chasing Birdie were simply three street thugs after her new money or if they were ancient warriors after the amulet. The Snatcher and the fate of Birdie's homeless friend Shondra is another storyline that will keep readers guessing.

I honestly enjoyed every minute of this short-but-fabulous debut from Julie Reece. Sequel, please?

THE BOTTOM LINE: Action-packed with a memorable cast of characters, Crux will easily appeal to teen and adult readers, whether or not they love urban fantasy. The short length and quick pace will appeal to reluctant readers without sacrificing plot or dumbing-down the story.

STATUS IN MY LIBRARY: Oh, yeah, I'm so getting Crux for my MS library! Human sex trafficking is a major part of the story, but no sex acts or crude sexual talk take place in the story at all. Some MS librarians might object to the trafficking references, but really, the human trafficking serves mainly as one of the many threats Birdie faces in her life on the streets. No activity takes place beyond the violent kidnappings of attractive young girls. I also think the inclusion of the trafficking has the added bonus of showing potential runaways the reality of life on the streets for young girls.

READALIKES: Trafficked (Purcell)

RATING BREAKDOWN:

Overall: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Characters: 5/5
Engrossing: 5/5
Writing: 5/5
Appeal to teens: 5/5
Appropriate length to tell the story: 5/5

CONTENT:

Language: none
Sexuality: mild--some kissing; human sex trafficking is a major part of the story
Violence: medium-high--lots of fighting and a few bloody deaths; girls kidnapped off the streets; gun violence
Drugs/Alcohol: none

OK... ANY book that quotes Monty Python is a WINNER in my 'book'!

"We shall say 'ni' again to you if you do not appease us."

This is a REALLY fabulous YA story... and this YA is a very adult YA. I wouldn't worry about teens reading it, but there is some racy undertones.

"Bite your lip. It's hot. Makes me want to go kick some Viking ass."

The story revolves around Birdie, who has had a less than stellar life. It's so nice to see a somewhat younger character still set today that hasn't been born with a silver spoon or raised by the Cleaver family. There are big bad things out there, and Birdie knows it. She still keeps her wits about her and doesn't succumb to petty greed or other base emotions.

"Jiminy Crickets, I can't handle the pressure."

Do you have a magic mirror that sees into my brain, Julie? I say this ALL the time!

The story flows well, absolutely grabs you from the very first page. And the wit, I absolutely adore books that can make me laugh. And Monty Python and Lord of the Rings references are NEVER a bad thing.

"I've been watching you, Birdie."
"That answer just earned you ten more points on your already very impressive creep-o-meter score."

I really appreciated how VERY unique, and different this story was. I love vamps and shifters, but this was just brilliant. Unique slant all it's own, adds history and lore in small doses, adds a healthy helping of swoon-worthy romance, drags it through a field of fantasy while still keeping it's feet firmly grounded in the present. You get supernatural epic quest meets a rags to riches romance/drama soap... in a good way, definitely in a good way.

"No. Oh, hell no. 'You gotta be kidding me!' I clench my fists. "I am not Bilfro Baggins. You are not a wizard with a pointy hat, and this is not the one ring of power.'"

And Grey... must not leave out at least a teaser of the rock n' roll hotness that is Grey! Hey's hot, he's in a band, he's like rich... but like any good hot male lead, he has his own problems. Grey has that mysterious, can't look away allure that makes you want to be in Birdie's shoes.

"'Perfect technique,' he says, as I manipulate the sticks. 'You're golden.'
I want another lesson."

"And that, kids, is how it's done."

Cover

Isn't this cover amazing? I loved having this image of Birdie in my mind's eye as I read, and I could totally see this cover girl throughout the story, surviving through what the author put her through. Whatever artist created this is incredible. I bow to you, whoever you are. Your talent is mind-blowing.
What I loved about the book:

In one word: Birdie. Her character is so simple, yet so complex it just about blew my mind. She's hilarious and wounded deeply, a survivor I couldn't help but pull for. As an author, I'm always looking for what works and what doesn't, and the characters and world Ms. Reece creates are colorful and believable, working to paint a complex tapestry for me to admire and even learn a thing or two from.

I've read scarce few present tense books that I enjoyed. It has to be spot on, and this one is, and how. I was IN the story as I was reading, right there with Birdie.

There are subtle lines throughout the book like these that are extremely creative and awe-inspiring:

“Uh hmm. That’s why you be sittin’ here in someone else’s piss? Girl, you gonna have to come up with somethin’ better than that.” Shondra shakes her head. She looks younger than me, but, like, a hundred years old, too. I can’t explain the quick bond between us, but I like her, and I don’t like many people. “They’s places you can go. Some churches, a day shelter on Ethel Street, Hosea House on Donnelly Avenue, and the Guthrie Shelter, but you ain’t got no kids, right?”
“No.”
She scoots closer on her butt cheeks until our shoulders touch. “Then you can’t go there. You stick with Shondra, honey. I’ll help you.”
Seeing as how Shondra is sitting in the same pee I am, I don’t know what she thinks she can do for me, but at least I’m not alone.

That simple line, that Shondra is sitting in the same pee struck me when I read it. Simple, vivid, tells a story within the story in only a few words. Birdie's "voice" is just perfect.

Here's another bit that makes me love Birdie in all her blunt glory:

My trip to the corner market was fun. When you’re homeless, you don’t dream of Perrier, or the surf and turf special at the local steakhouse that you pay for with plastic from your new Coach purse. You dream of bologna and cheese sandwiches, bottled water, and a grocery bag to keep your crap in.

This is a wonderful story that young adult fans everywhere are going to gobble up and rave about.

Let me start by saying this was a REALLY good book. I was hooked from page one and couldn't put it down! The story flows so well and keeps the reader entertained!

Birdie is a homeless teenager trying to turn her life around when an unexpected (or so she thinks) windfall comes her way. Grey is from a well-to-do family who wants to get to know her. Little do they know their lives are about to be changed forever.

Julie Reece created characters who are believable and lovable. I wanted to know more about them and turning the page was the way to do it. Even her periphery characters are well developed and add to the story instead of detracting from it.

One of the things I really liked about this story was Birdie's plight as a homeless teenager. Ms. Reece does an excellent job of giving the reader an insight into homeless teenagers, without beating the reader over the head. It's just part of the story and Birdie's life. It was very well done!

Another aspect I really liked about Ms. Reece's story is the research Birdie and Grey go through to find the answer. While it's integral to the final resolution of the problem, she doesn't belabor the point. Ms. Reece found a way to tell that part of the story without boring me to tears, she made it interesting.

The final battle was also well written. I often find writers who take the easy way out and give me an entirely too easy or cheesy confrontation. Ms. Reece does neither. She gives me a full on battle complete with struggles and tears. I loved it.

Overall this is a very good story that I could not put down. So, if it's so good, why only 4 stars? Well, I wanted a little more romance between Grey and Birdie. Yes, I know it was forbidden, that's what would have made it that much better! Gotta love forbidden romance!

I would love to see more of Birdie and Grey but I get the feeling this is a one shot deal.....bummer......

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Summary from Goodreads: She should have run. Now, she’ll have to fight. Her heritage did. Now, with only twenty-one days left, she’s got to decide whether to follow in the footsteps of those before her or risk her life for people she’s only just met.
This story was really engrossing. I love Reece's use of language. Her descriptive ability is amazing. There was not a time in this book that I wasn't able to picture exactly what Reece was describing. She is lyrical and poetic while at the same time she inserts a bit of humor into the story, no doubt to somewhat lighten the mood. The flow of the words truly kept me wrapped up in the story and I didn't want to put the book down.
Birdie's character is amazingly strong, yet unsure at the same time. She certainly has that teenage angst we see in most young adult novels but at the same time, you can see she has maturity beyond her years. I think the fact that she had to live on the streets toughened her. Yet, she is still quite vulnerable and untrusting. She doesn't want to open herself up to anyone for fear she will get hurt. She seems to accept her fate without question, knowing full well fighting to save her heritage may cost her her life and the life of the one she loves.
Grey is the perfect male lead. He's confident and sexy, he's caring and loving and he knows what he wants. He's not afraid to go after it and put aside what others might think. He has an immediate connection to Birdie and he never waivers in how he feels for her. He is utterly swoon worthy and strong with an enormous want to protect Birdie. Grey is willing to risk his own life to save Birdie, how can you not love that in a male lead character?
Jeff, Birdie's mentor, is mysterious. He holds secrets he won't tell Birdie, no doubt to protect her. He is that rich, eccentric man you see in such stories as Little Orphan Annie and The Sound of Music. He is calm and collected and there is more to him than meets the eye.
Throw in a great supporting cast of characters who are well developed and how can you not love this story?
The story line is flawless. Reece escorts you through her book with what seems like effortless prose. She reveals just the right amount of information at just the right time, building a story that is completing intriguing. Reece spins a tale of historic lore and weaves in romance and fantasy which captures the reader, never letting go. She creates characters who are believable and lovable, characters you care about. Reece also brings about a range of emotions from making me laugh, to making me scared, to making my heart ache.
This book gets 4.5/5 stars from me. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because I know this is a stand alone, and it left me wanting more: more Birdie, more Grey, more story. Julie Reece has definitely become one of my top authors. I am looking forward to future books from her!

WoW! I can't believe that this is a stand alone! I could definitely do with some more of this book that's for sure.
First of all, I want to thank the amazing Julie Reece and J.Taylor Publishing for providing me with an ARC ebook. I was utterly blown away when I received it and I am totally grateful to be given the opportunity to read it before the release date. I was not disappointed one bit.

This book had me captivated, enthralled, swept away and blown away. Julie Reece's ability to weave a story and describe it perfectly, had me feeling like I was literally in the moment with Birdie. All my senses were heightened and it enriched the story even more. It also has left me in love with the characters, both Birdie and Grey. Oh, words cannot express the love I feel for him. He is intoxicating and alluring, swoon worthy and oh so invitingly sexy. The tension and the teasing between these two bounced right off the screen. Every sensual caress, or nibble of a bottom lip, or the scenes where Grey had cornered Birdie up against a wall, *dies* sent me spiralling into a frenzy. It left me wanting more, and needing more. I have to have more! Okay, I think I need to calm down for just a second and give you a rundown of the story, spoiler free of course, because you all need to read this.

Birdie's life has not been easy, and at the age of eighteen, she finds herself homeless. But, Birdie really doesn't give you the chance to feel sorry for her. She pretty much is a surviver, who tries not to take crap from anyone and stands up for those in need, even though she is one of them. Well, her luck is about to change when she encounters a very strange and eccentric man, named Jeff, who just throws a large sum of money out on the street. Birdie finds this most odd and very peculiar indeed, but cannot resist collecting some of the money. This one action begins a chain of events, which changes Birdie's life forever. All of a sudden she is hunted down by thugs, and Jeff wants her for a very special mission, and Grey Matthews, the sexy and smart and cocky Mr Rich guy, wants nothing more but to protect her. She literally stumbles upon him while begin chased. I'd like to fall in his lap please.

But, Birdie wants none of it. She wants nothing more, except to try and have a normal life, for once. She's a tough cookie that one. She knows what she wants and sets out to get it. She can most definitely look out for herself. With the money she got off Jeff, she finds a place to live and enrols to go to college. Although, in the back of her mind, she cannot forget Jeff and the things he said to her. Or, Grey Matthews, for that matter. She knew he was out of her league, and the thought of him was driving her, and me, insane. And soon, Birdie discovers that, what Jeff set out in motion that day, was her destiny. She was meant to follow the paths of her descendants and try and do the one thing, that they couldn't. Could she do it? Well, I think you all need to find out for yourselves, when you pick this up as soon as it is released. I am telling you, that you will not be disappointed. If anything, you will be begging for more of this amazing story. Just like me!!

Take one likeable, relatable girl with a crappy background, one swoon-worthy dude who has just the right amount of strength and just the right amount of give-a-damn, one quirky-if-eccentric mentor, and one shedload of heritage revelations that leads the cool girl and cute guy to an unavoidable pinnacle moment in a certain history—with girl battling every one of her demons and fears along the way—and you pretty much have Crux.

I think that’s everything. There are so many aspects to this tale and they’re all so effortlessly linked to make the bigger picture that at first glance one might miss just how complex this tale is. Because there’s a little of everything in here. As kinda mentioned above.

Now, I hate spoilers in reviews and will avoid sticking any in if at all possible, so here goes:

Birdie: Love her headstrong yet vulnerable character, and the development we witness as she goes from being used to taking care of herself to being protective of others she’s allowed herself to care about.

Grey: *Sigh* He is an absolute darling. He can come fight my battles any day of the week. ;o)

Jeff: He may not appear at first glance to be a cool guy but dig deeper and you’ll notice that very little ruffles his feathers. Oh, and there is definitely more to Jeff than meets the eye.

On top of these three major players, we have a pretty diverse supporting cast—the cool friends, the total b***h that gives Birdie grief, the love of a family that Grey takes for granted and Birdie craves …

The plot: It’s historical, it’s Nordic, it’s romantic, it’s fantastical, it’s … epic? That’s about as much as I’m willing to say on that. Except for: the author’s writing has an almost lyrical tone to it, a flow to her prose that can lure you along without you even realising you’ve been captured. A definite win!

I'm still in bliss from reading Crux by Julie Reece. I have to say that Ms. Reece has to be one of the most talented authors on the planet. I know I'm gushing right now, but I loved this book that much.

Reading Birdie's story was like catching up with an old friend. Birdie rocks my socks, and Grey (the male lead) is sizzling hot. I loved his fierce loyalty to Birdie, especially because she was so real with insecurities most women have and some that broke my heart.

Birdie thought her life was hard before she met Jeff, this weird guy that gives her and a bunch of other random people money on a whim...or so it seems. But Birdie doesn't know that she is part of a cyle that's been going on for ages. She gets caught up into a world of magic and mahem and she is one great heroine! I loved her snark, her ability to roll with her everchanging landscape, and to just allow herself to feel when most people would be closed off by the things this girl had gone through.

This is one of those magical reads that takes you out of your world and plunks you right next to Birdie, Grey, Kate, and Scud along with a mongrel named Fenris. I loved the characters, and I loved this world where superheroes can come to life and save the day.

One heck of a read, Ms. Reece. I am honored to have been able to read the ARC of Crux, and I can't wait to read more from this amazing author! She really is one to watch.

Thanks to Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy Fanatics Group, J. Taylor Publishing, and the author for the opportunity to read and review Crux.

I absolutely LOVED this book. It would be a great introduction to the fantasy Genre for YA lovers. The fantasy is enough to keep the story rolling without needing to warp your mind that special way needed in some fantasy novels. Although it didn’t have the intensity or angst that are usually in my 5 star books, I enjoyed it from start to finish so it was really a no brainer.

Birdie is 18yo girl who is homeless and living on the streets alone. She encounters Jeff early on in the story when he lures her along with 6 other people to an alley. Gives a speech about doing good or paying the price and starts throwing money at them. Of course when money is involved there is never enough. There are a couple of thugs mixed in with the 7 people in the alley and they decide that they want all the money. Peter also gave her some info in the alley and the thugs want to know what he said to her. They start chasing her and this is where she meets Grey. The info from Peter in the alley is what leads her down the road that will change her life more than the huge pile of cash.

I wasn’t really expecting much out of this one and just came off a kind of let down book for me. This book grabbed me from page one. Birdie is such a likable character and the story just flowed for me from start to finish. Birdie doesn’t want to give the perfect Grey a chance thinking he is too perfect and out of her league. Once she finds out that people with money aren’t excused from pain she lets him in and they form a quick bond. Grey comes from money and his Bitch wanna be girlfriend Izzy places enough doubt in her already questioning mind whether or not she is good enough for Grey and Birdie's self doubt felt real. I am more of a fantasy lover and YA is down the list for me. The funny thing is, this is heavier on the YA romance than fantasy but it all worked so well for me. This is the perfect book to introduce your YA friends into the Genre of fantasy. The fantasy part was cool without having to keep track of strange lands and a ton of characters. The issues tackled are thought provoking, which include war, homelessness death and they are covered in a way that doesn't sugar coat it but not so deep to bring you down.

I can see where diehard fantasy lovers might not think it is enough of a brain flex and YA lovers might wish to get more sex but I thought it all worked out great. It’s got that first love feel and although there is insta-love or infatuation the progression wasn’t drug out or too fast. This novel hits all the emotions with just the right amount of punch.

I absolutely loved this book.

Okay, I should preface what is to come with the disclaimer that I read this as a BETA before it was submitted for publication and loved it then, so I took little risk in reading the final version. I already knew it was a kick-ass read. My opinion has not changed.

Crux is an YA Urban Fantasy (romance) featuring a down, but not out homeless girl, Rebecca Orin--who everyone calls Birdie. She's got spunk, sarcasm, and street sense. The kind of female lead I just love to get behind. After a very strange day that finds Birdie coming into some cash, and more attention than she could ever want, she learns there may just be something special about her and her bloodline.

I'm not one to put spoilers in a review, so I wont go into the plot line any more than that, but I can say the mission she ends up embarking on is full of history, mystery, monks and Vikings -- what a combination!

I mentioned above there was some romance in the tale as well, and the male lead Grey Matthews is just the kind of guy any teenage girl would swoon over. Sexy, rich, and completely head over heels for Birdie. Suffice to say, my 17yr old daughter -- who also read Crux (and LOVED IT)is keeping her eyes open for her own "Grey".

Ms. Reece's gift for vibrant description and emotionally rich characters makes this story a real winner in my book. A must read for the YA Urban Fantasy fans out there, or anyone looking for a sweet romantic adventure.

The Rundown:
Birdie is about as down on her luck as an eighteen year old can get. Homeless and hungry she walks alone down a busy street thinking about the direction her life has taken, when a stranger runs past her with several others in tow, claiming he has gifts for anyone who will follow him. Birdie, having nothing to lose, decides to follow the small group of people who believe their will be a pay off at the end of this crazy mans ranting. Only when the stranger throws handfuls of money in the air, it’s everyone for themselves. The stranger takes an instant interest in Birdie, tucking a secret package into her hands and whispering something into her ear, which immediately attracts the attention of the others.

The Review:
Wow, where do I even start. This book was nothing short of spectacular! It was imaginative, adventurous, romantic and creative story telling at its finest. I loved the blending of real world life, fantasy, present and archaic times. There was everything in this book. Adventure, swoon worthy romance, supernatural aspects, a huge hulking dog (who doesn’t love those!) and Vikings… yes, you heard me, big, blond haired VIKINGS! Like Eric from TrueBlood (only without the fangs).. YUUMM!

Characters:
Birdie’s life has been challenging to say the least. She’s had obstacles in her view for a long time but she tries desperately to rise above them. She doesn’t feel she worthy of good things because of past events so she keeps herself isolated, living a nomadic life, thinking she might soil those around her. She doesn’t trust easily and she doesn’t expect goodness when she’s seen so much corruption. She’s damaged, edgy and real but definitely not broken. She still maintains that spark of hope that makes her shine and the perfect heroine.

The provocative and illustrious Mr. Grey Mathews.. oh my! If I was a bit younger and lived in fictional land, that boy wouldn’t stand a chance in my love web! I’d gobble him up and keep him all MINE! His rock-star like character (smirk) was arduous, imposing (in a good way), demanding (in a damn good way) and formidable (in a most spectacular way!). But his most endearing quality… he WOULDN’T let Birdie risk everything alone. He was her protector and there’s nothing quite like a man willing to risk himself for the woman he cares for. He was multi-faceted and I loved every enduring quality about him.

ALL the ancillary characters were welcome additions and fun to read. Jeff, who was pivotal in this story and a total enigma, was a wonderful support and extended father figure to Birdie. Grey’s family/friends, namely his sister Katie (adorable), Scud (amusing), the parents (protective), Dylan (needs a good girl by his side), and Izzy (needs a house to fall on her in the worst way!!) were all delightful trappings to this fascinating story. One last character to mention, but definitely not least, Fenris! That hulking beast needs a book all his own. I want to know more!!

Wish List:
There were a few times when the POV switched from past to present tense. It threw me off making me go back to re-read sentences. I think with a little more editing in certain places, the flow could have been better, but it wasn’t that huge of a distraction. I also wanted more on Fenris. Where did he come from, what was he, why was it a rarity for him to help and why did he choose to help Birdie. His obvious affection for Birdie was lovely and well written but why? What made her different from past Wielders other then she was one of the few females? There were too many unanswered questions about his character and I just found him to fascinating to not know!

The Wrap Up:
I.WANT.MORE! Though this was a single book, there was plenty of room left for this adventure to continue. The world, powers and character building were so strong I think this could easily carry into a series. Hint hint to Ms. Reese! ;) Also, I have to commend the author on the ending. Sometimes in a book there’s this huge buildup on an upcoming battle only to have the ending fall flat. Not this story! The battle was epic, bloody and made of total WIN! I loved this book! It’s just that simple.

*Sigh* I love Grey!!

Really I do.

Well this book is.... Different.
Never read anything like it... Wait. Nope. Never.

It's a story about Birdie- well Rebecca. Who happens to be a descendant from ancient Viking kings. She alone reaps the power of the Allum an amulet which holds great power and only she can vanquish all the spirits that return and reak havvock in the present world.

Grey becomes her guardian however it is forbidden to cross the lines of friendship however with their growing feelings they possess towards each other will they be able to abide by the ancient rules and what will happen if they act on those feelings? Will they forfeit the lives of innocents in order to begin a secret relationship?

Grey is wealthy and Birdy is homeless when a random guy throws thousands of dollars up in the air of course she's going to grab some. However six other guys also got a share and they chase her for hers. She spots an upperclass guy with his family and asks to sit wth them. One- Grey offers her a lift to get her away from them. After that with her new wap of cash shes soon able to rent a flat of her own, get some clothes and start eating regularly. Of course she then runs into Grey again. And not a moment too soon for things are about to get complicated and her life aswell as Greys will never be the same.

Oh and the guy who chucked all that money in the air? That was just a stunt to get Birdies attention but now he has it, what does he want with it.

Oh yes this story will keep you guessing.

Julie Reece’s CRUX is a refreshing and gritty young adult novel with glimmers of the paranormal, glimpses of the historical, and more than a dash of romance and mystery.

When homeless eighteen-year-old Birdie stumbles across a mysterious stranger giving away money, her life is forever changed. Now people are trying to kill her, and she must do the one thing she never thought she could do: trust strangers, particularly Grey Mathews. And that’s just the beginning as Birdie is ensnared into a past much bigger than she could ever realize.

CRUX drew me in with the fantastic voice. At times vulnerable and other times sarcastic, Birdie is a refreshing character. Opposed to Birdie is Grey Mathews, who seems to have everything, but he makes for a thrilling and sexy character. The characters in CRUX could have easily had their own novel. Besides characterization, Reece excels at description. She creates the right amount and uses fresh metaphors to carry the most impact on each scene. The plot is intricate with the historical details mingled into the present. I loved the use of Norse mythology and history. For the most part, the novel kept me reading and anxious to discover what would happen to Birdie and Grey.

CRUX by Julie Reece amazes with its intricate plot and characters who stick with you.

So, what did I think about Crux? Um … ::taps finger against chin:: How best to say this … it was awesome!

Let’s start with … “the boy”. Grey Mathews. Um. Yumminess? Grey is this super protective guy. It’s clear he’s like that around almost everyone, but for Birdie, he’s seriously protective. Almost too much, which leads to both the romantic element of the book as well as quite a bit of conflict. I like that this isn’t an “I fall in love with you” “you love me back” and their relationship is perfect. It’s not. Everything about their relationship is contrary to what Birdie really wants in life.

On Birdie, she’s the perfect combination of torn between reality and wishing life could be easier. She’s never had it easy and I was desperate for her to have **something** good happen. You think that’s going to happen right in the beginning and then that doesn’t work out. You think it’ll work a few chapters later and THAT doesn’t work out. Then she starts training for this mission that’s part of a heritage she didn’t know she had. I realize there’s a lot of that ‘out there’ (teens not knowing about their heritage) but it’s so apt because what 17/18/19 year old really knows who their grandparents were? Who their parents were even?

So we learn along with Birdie and we grow as Birdie does. We hurt for her, we pine for Grey (okay … *I* did) and we want her to succeed. I so wanted her to succeed. By the end, as she and Grey are in the last battle, hoping to win the last of the fight, and I wanted to throw the book at the wall.

Yes, I did.

We’d spent that whole time getting to know Birdie and Grey, learning about their likes and dislikes, seeing them mature, seeing them willing to risk themselves for each other and for people they don’t even know and every time, Birdie loses. Every time.

I just wanted her to win, once!

And therein lies the ‘crux’ of the story. It’s a time of deliverance and self confidence. Birdie’s coming into her own. She is growing and getting help and fighting the ‘good fight’. She’s letting people into her life. It’s about her ‘learning to fly’ so to speak and it’s set in a magical, but ‘urban’ world, which makes it even more applicable – relevant. And with Grey, her heart can start to thaw, and she can learn to love.

Sidekicks in this book are awesome. ‘Jeff’ is a trip. And Fenris is … well … there, I’m going to have to let you decide. He’s … a wolf of his own kind. Kate and Dylan and Scud are great secondary characters and Isabelle (aka Izzy) … well … every YA book needs the snotty, snobby, overtly show-off-ish blonde girl. Especially one who is the exact opposite of the main blonde girl.

There you have it. Crux. An awesome read. Don’t miss out.

{As a fellow author, I was privileged to read this story prior to its release.}

What a surprise this book turned out to be... and not just because I liked it so much. I read "Urban Fantasy", but what I got was more of a crossover between Fantasy and Urban Fantasy. Confused? If you're a nerd like me, you know there's a big difference, and this one was a crossover. What a cool idea, and what a fabulous cast of characters!

Birdie's opening scene is crazy...some random rich guy starts throwing around wads of cash, pleading for those fortunate people who scramble for the bills to do more than spend it. His hope is for the crowd to take care of those less fortunate than them. Can't get much less fortunate than the homeless and orphaned Birdie who hasn't had a meal in two days. He also has a special message for Birdie...a special message for a special person.

Events unfold and alliances are forged! For real, an ancient curse is Birdie's destiny, and her destined Guardian must be found in order for her to be able to complete her task. But before she can go back to ancient times to fight evil, she must be prepared, both physically and mentally. Now, Birdie's only eighteen years old, but she's lived a lifetime since her parents died. She's already street smart. And yet she still retains a bit of innocence and faith in people's innate goodness. This was one of my favorite things about her. She had been through so much devastation in her young life, but she still sees goodness in people and beauty in life. She still wants to be a good person and do the right thing.

Grey Matthews seems to come from a completely different world than Birdie. They seem to have an uncanny ability to keep running into each other, and a sexual tension ladened friendship is hesitantly made. I love how their relationship is slow to take hold. Grey and Birdie are perfectly matched, though hesitant to take their relationship to the next level. This book is definitely YA, and I was impressed with how much I liked a book that is so obviously written for teens. I never felt a lack of character development that I often feel books written for younger readers. I could still connect with them fully.

There was a LOT going on in this story! Since the fantasy part stems from an ancient Viking curse, there are some crazy visions, a bit of time travel, and some shady characters that leave you guessing as to their real import in the story line. The biggest thing that I had problems with about the book is that I felt like everything happened so fast. Some of it needed more time to be fully fleshed out, maybe with some more details about what ended up happening to some of the lesser players. There were a couple of minor story lines that never got an ending, and I really wish I had some closure. There were another few scenes that were a bit oversimplified and ended up feeling a little stilted and abrupt. When all was said and done, though, this was an exciting, fast paced read full of twist and turns. The last 20% or so was awesome, and I loved how it ended. Not only do we get an epic battle scene, but we get a real life love that is believable and sweet.

The main girl, Birdie, is given an ultra-cool quest involving an amulet, a mystical war and tonnes of cash. She's smart, witty, funny, nice and really down to Earth. You can just imagine her giving the other snotty witches the look when she walks in the room:

And there's this guy called Grey - and as soon as you read his description, you're all:

And even though she has next to nothing to do with the main plot, this random girl - Izzy - torments Birdie constantly because she's totally gonna end up with Grey (who plays guitar btw). She's all "I'm always gonna be here for Grey, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH! Take THAT!"

God forbid there be more to life than boys, hon. Because...I don't know...there might be a WORLD TO SAVE, and people's lives may BE AT RISK - and whilst Birdie is kicking ass, dealing with her past and trying to make sure justice is served, all this weirdo cares about is who she's gonna bring to Homecoming. Figures. :D

But of course - even with all the kick-ass action - comes the cute and adorable relationship that is Greydie or Brey!! THEY ARE TOO CUTE FOR WORDS WHEN THEY'RE TOGETHER!!!

A MUST read, that's a mix of Tiger's Curse, Alex Rider and Lola and the Boy Next Door. Pure epicness.

I'll admit, I squealed when I got an ARC of Crux by Julie Reece--I'm a huge fan of Cassandra Clare's YA urban fantasy series, and I was anxious to dive into Reece's contribution to the genre.

Add in that it's set in Atlanta--as opposed to, say, New York or London--and I was bouncing in my seat.

The synopsis only gives readers a tiny hint of what's contained in Crux, the key word being "heritage." This is where the fantasy part takes over from the urban element and readers are asked to suspend their disbelief.

Birdie is an unlikely, reluctant hero asked to embark on a journey that takes her in and out of ancient history filled with ominous Vikings (picture a scruffy Alexander Skarsgard!) and lore that we only read about as myths. For Birdie, they are all too real and the consequences are deadly.

Reece does a magnificant job twining the two timelines together, allowing us to feel ourselves being sucked into first one world, then the other and back. We feel the same push-and-pull that Birdie does, both in her quest and with the characters this tough loner comes to care about.

Creating believeable side characters is another of Reece's fortes. Readers will alternately love, hate, and want to smash their fists through the characters' faces. Dylan, Kate and Scud--and even the brief appearances of Shondra and a human Fenris--are reminders of what Birdie is missing, what she once had, and what she stands to lose.

Birdie's eventual (and insistent) love interest, Grey, is swoonworthy, sure, but he also grows throughout the book, aiding Birdie in her evolution while making strides in his own life. Kudos to Reece for showing restraint in their relationship and making readers smolder page after page (wink, nudge).

Finally, Reece pulled off a number of plot twists that I totally didn't see coming. Looking back, I really should have. The clues were all there, yet they took me by surprise. I love that!

Crux is a smart, heart-rending and empowering addition to YA urban fantasy that will appeal to Cassandra Clare fans, lore fans and really, anyone who appreciates tough characters that know how to tug readers' heartstrings.

Pick this one up, people. :)

I really enjoyed this book and just could not put it down. I even read it in the car during a 4 hour drive despite my motion sickness. The story flowed really well and kept me entertained throughout. Birdie was very believable and I loved her character. All of the characters were developed and believable, even peripheral characters. I really enjoyed the back story of Birdie being a homeless teenager. I thought the author did a wonderful job in handling that. Birdie was tough, funny, and street smart without being annoying. Grey was a good romantic interest that was not over the top with wanting to protect Birdie. The book really did leave me guessing in spots. It was great to have a book that was not too predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed the use of Norse mythology and history as it is not commonly used.

A refreshingly good YA novel.

What I didn't like:
The legend this book was based upon seemed underexplained- it needs a bit more fleshing out to make it more interesting.
There were things that Birdie was too smart to not have seen coming, like:
her dog wasn't a normal dog
who Jeff was

What I liked:
the humor was done really well and made me chuckle out loud quite a few times.
her inner monologue irritated and amused me at different times-made Birdie feel more real.
her indecisiveness when it came to Grey-really fun to watch!

Julie Reece’s Crux is a fabulous read! This novel was suggested to me by a friend and I must say I’m very appreciative of the recommendation.
The characterizations are excellent and the entire plot follows a very coherent story line which includes danger, suspense and romance. The mystery begins in the very first chapter when Birdie meets a strange character she calls Jeff, and is immediately catapulted into a strange web of events with roots extending back into Norse Mythology. It is an action-packed narrative, grabbing the reader from the very beginning and maintaining that intensity to the very end!
It is so refreshing to have a heroine that was ¬not merely a survivor, a non-descript personality or a reluctant pawn in an unfolding drama. Birdie is a descendant of ancient Vikings and, as such, she is poised to end a centuries old conflict and save the world. She is, however, an unlikely heroine, currently homeless, having walked away from the last of many foster homes.
I have to say that, having been a foster parent myself, I was especially intrigued by the strength of character and resilience of Birdie; even though she had such a difficult upbringing. Instead of left-over bitterness and hopelessness, she shows compassion, curiosity and courage. This story is her journey out of self-doubt and mistrust of others.
Now enter the strong male character that would turn any girl’s head. Grey Mathews gives Birdie a ride to save her from dangerous thugs, and their connection spirals as the plot web unfolds. Although Grey is from a rich family, there are no stereotypes here. Handsome and sexy, he is also the perfect protector, a guardian that constantly shows strength, confidence and extreme loyalty.
The story line is captivating. Julie Reece has woven a story that immediately engages the reader. I especially loved Birdie’s “yeah, whatever” style commentary throughout the book. Bird’s attitude is completely sarcastic yet she steps up and willingly becomes the heroine through all of the events of the story.
I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves romance and adventure. You can bet that I will be anxiously awaiting more novels from Julie Reece.

I believe in 1/2 stars. Goodreads needs to get on that there ban wagon.

Anyhoo... 4.5 stars from me!!

*Warning! Contains Spoilers!!*

Birdie lives on the streets, and a run-in with a wacko leaves her with more than she ever had - and an amulet that takes her on acid trip-like 'journies'. What she sees, however, are secret hints of what she'll need to lift an ancient viking curse. But she won't go it alone.

Enter Grey Matthews, her Guardian.

Let me just say if I was an 18-yr-old, I'd have a major crush. Hot, rich, and amazingly taleneted, he's all Birdie thought she'd never have.

Anyhoo. Read the book for the rest. :)

Yummies: Who doesn't love a snarky, strong female character? Especially one who has baggage - emotions held behind protective walls just begging to be pulled down? Enter that boy again - one who, while just seeming to have it all, has issues & pain of his own. Both are well rounded, flawed, & likeable. It was easy getting caught up in their stories.

The plot itself was totally unique for me. I LOVE finding a book unlike anything I've read before.

Tension & pacing was excellent - no info dumps & long history lessons. Just straight up story - action, adventure, & NO love triangle. Woo Hoo!

Yuckies: A huge fan and writer of fantasy, I MUST call attention to the magical elements of this story. While some may argue, 'It's fantasy, anything is possible!' I disagree.

I NEED the believability factor. I need to be convinced that what I'm reading could really happen. Logically it must make sense. Thus my 2 issues.

1 - The first time Birdie uses the amulet, it's effortless. Untried, unpracticed, having never attempted it before, the magic just happens. If it had been made clear it was the amulet itself doing everything & only using her as the conduit, fine. But that's not what happened. She controls the wind with ease and in the middle of it (in a conversational tone) asks Grey for his help. No panic. No weakness - like controlling elements is a cinch. Granted, later she struggles with the other elements, but the intial ease really bothered me. (Sorry Julie.)

2 - Lack of consequence. Normally magic draws from something, a 'taking' if you will. Here however, there is nothing. The amulet's magic is free. No consequences whatsoever. This really left a bad taste in my mouth, especially in the end when she & Grey are left with the amulet's power becoming a part of their physical beings. Two teenage supermen with no kryptonite ...??? While they're both great kids, what's to hold them in check? Balance the good & evil intent untold powers can bring?

Recommend: Looking above it seems there more yuck than yum, but that isn't true. I just like to ramble on the fantasy aspects of fantasy. ;)

Read this book? ABSOLUTELY! It took me 3 days (thank you daughters, traveling, cleaning - life in general) but my mind was never far from Birdie & Grey. They had my attention, my desire to see them through to the end, and for me that's what makes this a book great.

Okay where to begin with this review. Man oh man I would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to J Taylor Publishing for allowing me to read this ARC copy of Crux. I have to say that this is a story that grips you right from the start. I will try and do this review without giving any spoilers. It is going to be very hard because I LOVED every aspect of this book and I need more from Julie.

Birdie is 18 years old and is homeless just trying to survive. She is on the streets one day when she sees this man throwing away money. She grabs the money unsuspecting that any thing will happen to her but boy was she wrong. Because Birdie's life is about to change and in some ways it will be good and other's it will be bad. See Birdie has a secretive heritage she is about to find out about and she will have to make some decisions about accepting her heritage or not. Along the way she meets Grey Mathews who will help her make her decisions and in the end Birdie will have the fight of her life.

Will Birdie brace her heritage or will she flee from it? Come along for a ride of a lifetime. Julie has crafted and weaved a story that is unforgettable. Plus there are some swoon worthy guys in it to. The message you walk away with is one that will stay with you long after you have read it. Happy Reading!

Genre: YA Urban Fantasy/PNR with Historical Elements
Publisher Type: Indie

My Review:
Wow, holy cow is this a great read! It has such a creative and unusual premise and I enjoyed the many twists and turns of the fast-paced plot. The plot does get a bit slow mid-book, but that's hardly an issue because the writing is sooo good. Julie Reece has a gift for conveying deep emotions with her writing (see my fav quote below). I felt Birdie's regret, distrust, apprehension, excitement and joy. And I love the characters - small and large!!! Birdie is amazing (and has such a well-devised back story); I really cared what happened to all the characters and hated to say goodbye at the end of the book. I'm really hoping that there's another Crux book coming. (Fenris, fenris, fenris ... hmmm, more of you in book 2?pleeeeaaaasssseee .... I'm hoping!!!!).

Cover Art:
I've got to say how much I love this cover! I love the hints of the story from it. Mysterious enough that I'd have to pick it up to find out what this book is all about!!!

A Fav Quote:
"A piece of us is gone and won't come back." His eyes are glassy. I've learned to recognize pain, and Grey's expression crucifies me with him.

Don't forget to stop by my blog to enter to win a copy of Crux!!

What can I say about this read other than to put it simply and say it was fantastic.

Completely engaging. It had just the right amount of action, mystery, romance and fun to make it a page turner and to keep me interested.

I never felt like it dragged or lacked anywhere.

The characters, every single one of them, were truly wonderful. I adored Grey. Birdie was kick butt and her sense of humor was witty and sarcastic and I just loved how far she came throughout the story.

Kate, Scud, Dylan. Again, all fantastic.

I really don't know what else to say about it other than to keep it short and sweet and say, this really is a must read book. One that you won't want to miss.

Reese did an amazing job with it and I know that I will be looking for her work in the future.
