This was certainly a good book, I enjoyed it very much. The characters were very real and relatable. I was a little confused by the title, I thought it would be about dragons, but it was about feline races. Not that I was disappointed. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys shifter romance books. The narrator was great at bringing the story alive. Now to read the next book.

It’s hard to enjoy a story that makes me angry and frustrated at the conflicts between the hero and heroine.

STORY BRIEF:
Ulyssa is a government agent sent to the planet Qurilixen to stop a man with biological weapons. The threat appears to be over. While she waits to be picked up, King Attor kidnaps her for his harem. He dies within a day or so, before he can use her. His son Kirill becomes king. Kirill and Ulyssa start falling for each other. There is a lot of fighting and bantering going on between Kirill and Ulyssa. She plans to leave him when her spacecraft arrives.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I did not like the ways Kirill and Ulyssa interacted with each other. They both were difficult to get along with, but Ulyssa was worse. I didn't like her personality and attitude. She was rash, outspoken and reckless. Kirill made a minor comment, and Ulyssa took offense and punished him in an unfair way. When Ulyssa realized she liked Kirill, she started putting distance between them (one of my pet peeves on my Profile page). They acted like they didn't want each other, and then they both assumed the other didn't want them. I was most angry with the vague communication conflicts described under Spoilers below. The underlying plot about two warring groups and a biological weapon threat was ok.

DATA:
Story length: 193 pages. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 7. Total number of sex scene pages: 29. Setting: centuries into the future on the planet Qurilixen. Copyright: 2005. Genre: science fiction and paranormal romance.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
I was angry at the vague communication. For no good reason, Kirill sat next to an unattached harem girl Linzi at dinner, acting like he enjoyed being with her and flirting with her. When Ulyssa saw this she was hurt and decided she could never be with Kirill because he would desire other women. She left him and the palace. When they next see each other, she does hateful things because she believes he was with Linzi. He responds with bad feelings and words. Later on, he softens and tells her that he was never with Linzi. Ulyssa continues to lie to him about why she left. At one point, she started to tell him why, but they were interrupted. After that, she had a chance to tell him but she didn't. She planned to leave him even though she loved him. They didn't know that each one loved the other. I was angry and frustrated at the author for creating several conflicts based on vague communication and inaccurate assumptions (my pet peeve #1).

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💙💚💜🤎
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 🤐🤫🫣☺️🥰

The heroine: Ulyssa - an undercover agent with the HIA (Human Intelligence Agency). She was sent to the Qurilixen world as one of the prospective galaxy brides. She thinks the brides are misguided and she doesn’t believe in marriage. Her mission is to try to stop the sale of biological weapons.

The Hero: King Kirill - he is a black panther shifter. After his father dies, he is stuck with the situation his father put the planet in, with the two shifter houses nearly at war. He is also stuck with his father’s large harem and has to do something about all the women there.

The Story: The Qurilixen world is a population of shape-shifters. The Draeg take up half the planet and are Dragon shifters and the Var take up the other half and are cat shifters and it seems that the planet is on the verge of all out war. Radiation on their planet has made it so females are rarely born, which is the reason brides are needed. Though when her mission is complete, she finds that she is stuck on the planet without an exit for three months and she is caught by one of the cat shifters and put in the kings harem.

I didn’t really like Ulyssa. She was too brash and petty and had a hugely overinflated view of herself. Though I did like Kirill. He was sexy and had a huge responsibility on his shoulders and wanted to do right by his people. Though I did really enjoy the conflict between Kirill and Ulyssa and the fact that both of them are determined to be done with each other eventually but can’t seem to fight the attraction for the time being.

The book was told in dual points of view and narrated by a single male narrator, Michael Ferraiuolo. He did a fine job reading, but his voice didn’t really match the main characters, he has a softer voice which is better when he does the female voices, but not optimal for the alpha male protagonist. Points removed in the narration for not having two narrators and not having duet narration (where the male does the male parts and female does the female parts in every chapter). The story ended up being much better than I expected.

It's been forever since I've read anything by this author. I'm so glad I did.

The Savage King , what a fun, sexy romp bursting with amazing world building and alien civilizations. This book is part of a series, and whereas I did not enjoy the first book, I got into this one from the word "Go!". You can read this as a stand-alone but it does help to have read at least the first few books where Kirill's vicious, misogynistic and pyscho father, King Attor, makes his appearance. It sets the tone for this novel.

Kirill is amazing. Gorgeous, sexy and intelligent. Ulyssa is a strong, brave and resourceful heroine. Together, the chemistry is electrifying. They both are extremely likable characters who have past wounds from their upbringing. There were a few unexpected plot twists that gave this couple a chance to shine together. The only thing I didn't like was the ending felt a bit rushed and cliched. Still, they got their HEA and it was so very sweet.

This is a romantic and sensual book with little elements of suspense. I truly enjoyed it!

The planet of Qurilixen consists of two shifter clans. The Vars are the cat shifters who rule the South and the Draigs are the Dragon Shifters who rule the North.

Agent Ulyssa Payne is a member of the Human Intelligence Agency and is undercover on a mission to stop a biological warfare. When things turn for the worse, she’s ambushed and kidnapped by King Attor and is kept in his harem. As time passes and waiting for opportune times to escape, she runs into Kirill who she is strongly attracted to and fights her emotions to stay detached and keep him at arm’s length.

King Kirill is part of the Var clan and has overtaken rule from his now deceased and unfeeling father King Attor, who ruled with an iron fist and have left the two clans in war for many years. Kirill is an obdurate man who keeps is emotions at bay until Ulyssa Payne worms her way into his heart. I found him endearing when he slips up and shows his vulnerable side of his character.

I would have given this an extra star but the plot was a little predictable in parts and the sex scenes are detailed though not explicit; and in the words of my friend Jill, the insta-love/lust and other stupid romance tropes.... got a little tiring. The pairing of these two also, could not have been more different than chalk and cheese. Whilst Kirill is quiet, Ulyssa is loud mouth and boisterous; which at times I found quite annoying. The story also lagged a little in my opinion at the beginning. Luckily it picked up towards the end, with a nice little twist that caught me by surprise. I also enjoyed seeing the other Lords of the Vars, being Kirill’s brothers and looking forward to reading more of them in the following books.

This book hadn't any real substance. All the conflict was based on miscommunication and could have been resolved with a five minute chat. It may have only taken 30 seconds. I found myself really annoyed with Ulyssa. I didn't like her at all, and when I don't like the heroine, I find it hard to enjoy the book.

Unfortunately, this is my first Michelle M. Pillow book to read. I was looking forward to her work since I've heard so many good things about it. But now I'm feeling a bit put off. I'm sure I'll try her again, but it may take me a bit.

"Gahhhhh!!! 5 stars and a place on my fave's bookshelf!!! lol

“To be ruled by a woman is to be ruled by weakness and kingdoms are only as strong as their rulers. A King must stand alone, beholden to none.”—King Attor of the Var

I never realized that this book from Ms. Michelle Pillow will be this utterly good!!!

I have a great love and passion about shifters and hot alpha males who knows how to treat their woman.

Kirill who just recently became king of the VAR and took all the responsibility as the eldest son of the late King Attor. Supposedly also acquiring the king's harem. Ulyssa, an agent from earth is on a verge of a mission had been the latest addition to the harem. Unexpectedly bumping with King Kirill on her way out of the castle to escape, undeniable lust and hunger surged between the two dominant forces. Yes the sex was definitely raw and oozing hot!!!

I just love how the story flowed without putting too much descriptions on the characters. It did not appear to me as a dictionary trying to memorize each and every character. I also loved how the alpha males were portrayed and how passionate they can also be.

The plot is somewhat refreshing for me and I just admire how the details were laid out on this story!!! Gahhh I'm already a fan and can't wait to finish the series.

The Savage King by Michelle M. Pillow
(Lords of the Var, #1)

On planet Klixen lives the shapeshifters, half dragon shifters and half cat shifters, who are the the brick of war. Agent Ulyssa Payne, human, is on the planet on a mission: make sure the Medical Mafia leader doesn't leave the planet. But her target gets killed by his own daughter, so now her mission is over. Though, she cannot make it home until the Agency comes to get her, which will take three months. Staying at her camp to wait for her ride, something happen that she didn't expect. She gets kidnapped by the King of the Var, Attor. Ulyssa's left in the Var harem to await his return, but King Attor doesn't. Now there's a new king, Attor son, King Kirill.

King Kirill always knew his destiny was to be king, though he didn't expect to do his duty so soon. Putting everything aside, his needs, emotions, wants, except his duty to his kingdom. Which is first and formost to stop the war from happening. Then he gets Ulyssa and the complications she brings. Grown up being told never to fall in love and to take a life mate, because it will be looked as a weakness, he does everything he can not to do that.

Making a deal that will benefit them both, Ulyssa will act as King Kirill's mistress until she gets rescued. Though what will they do when the acting becomes real?...

Ulyssa is a woman who is stubborn, selfless, independent, strong, with pride and refuses to submit to a man, specially not to a man who doesn't look at her as a equal. Having lost her parents when she was a month old, she lived as a orphan in some kind of orphanaga, until the Agency became her life.
Kirill is a dominant, alpha male with a kind heart, but not weak. He definitely knows when to put his hard face on, and to show his power, which he has a lot of. He's a King and he refuses to bow to anyone, refuses to be looked at as weak, and he will definitely not submit to any woman.

The growning feelings for each other started really fast, and they were in each others thoughts constantly. Not a alot happen in the book, but at the same time it did. It was an interesting story, with a hell of a lot of frustration. I had a few moments where i wanted to strangle both of the characters who refuses to act on their feelings, act like they don't mean anything to each other and they both end up hurting and with a lot of miss-communication. The sex was wild and free. They pretty much did it everywhere, -bed, desk, balcony, against the tree...-, though, i think the sex scenes where a little short, it definitely made my pants wet... It was so.. sexy in a way to watch Kirill lose control.. delicious!

'The Savage King' was an easy and a lovely quick read. It was different from what ive read before, like being on a different planet, and the book was a bit strange, but i think that was what made it good. I enjoyed and liked it :)

The Savage King - I just could not finish it The Savage King is the story of Ulyssa who is a military agent and has been sent to the planet of Qurilixen on a mission to ensure some Mafia does not leave the planet. Only she is thwarted because her targets daughter killed him, but leaving is not so easy she is trapped until the next transport can pick her up which is not for a few months. Well Ulyssa soon finds herself caught and kidnapped by King Ator who wants her for his harem. Only the King never comes for her because he too is murdered. Now the Kings son is about to become the new Savage King and well things get more complicated because the new King Kirill is not really ready to become King and he has feelings for this difficult woman.

Sounds good right well it did not pan out for me.  I will be upfront and say I did not finish the book I quit at about 40%. I really disliked Ulyssa I guess some would say she is feisty but I keep wondering what the hell kind of agent is she. She is mouthy and brass about the dumbest stuff. Why would you try to escape without getting some intel first? Needles to say she was a bit of an idiot. Then the two of them are just silly I guess communication does not really exist on this planet to boot even the erotic scenes just seemed blah. Add to that I think they referenced the 21st century like this is the past yet all of the attitudes and comments felt very much like modern day.

Suffice it to say I am glad I got this book for free THANK YOU amazon prime. I am a bit miffed that I wasted my monthly credit on this book but at least I am not out of cash.
Anyway people seem to really like this book and maybe it would have been better had I read Dragon Lords first but I did not and I am no longer interested.

And I thought all the Var were ugly cat people, yea right, I just got so hooked to the Dragon Lords that I thought all Var were bad and ugly....Well now I am in love with the Dragon Princes Dragon Lords and the Var Princes, I'll take one of each thank you.

No seriously King Kirill sounds so hot...After years of living under the tyranical rule of his father King Attor, Kirill must take his place as the new King of the Var. He wasn't prepared though, he never expected his father to die so soon and he isn't ready to rule, but certainly not as his father had. King Kirill wants peace with the Draig, not war!

Ulyssa Payne aka Gena (big boob) from the Galaxy Brides ship is really in disguise. She's on Qurilixen on a mission, till she's whisked away by the Var and falls into the arms a very handsome and enticing cat, King Kirill.

Man are those cats insatiable! Loved it, there was even a moment in the book that made me cry....What passion and I thought the Draigs were passionate, these guys have to drink something to keep them in check!

I can't wait to read about the next Var Prince...

I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Savage King by Michelle Pillow is the first book in her Lords of Var series, in the Dragon Lords universe. The Var share the planet with the Draig and are their sworn enemies. This book begins about a week before the old King Attor’s death when he finds and captures Ulyssa who is hiding in the forest. Attor puts Ulyssa in the harem and promises to deal with her later, but he is killed by the Draig before that happens.
Attor’s oldest son, Kirill, inherits his kingdom and unfortunately his harem as well. Kirill has no interest in a woman who slept with his father from the harem, or a life mate, but he is tempted when he meets Ulyssa. Ulyssa has a mission to complete and just wants to get off the planet. She hates being trapped in the Var palace, but after she meets Kirill she is interested in spending one night with him because he is hot!
The Var princes are an interesting group, at first glance, they are nothing like the Draig. King Attor never took a mate and has taught all of his sons that to be mated to a woman and to love is to be weak. All of his sons seem to agree with this idea to some degree, but Kirill is starting to have possessive feelings for Ulyssa, and he decides that one night isn’t enough. I really liked this story, but it took me a little time to warm up to Kirill and the Var, it may be because I loved the Draig princes and lords so much and I love how they treat their women, which is different for the Var. There was a lot of action in this book and the love scenes were really hot.

I came across this book while I was looking for a Deal of the Day to post on our EDGy Facebook page. It was available on KU and I was in the mood for a little sci-fi smut so I thought “Why Not”. I should have kept on looking. Ulyssa is a spy/operative on a planet to kill a mafia doctor. When the doctor’s daughter does her job for her by killing him herself, Ulyssa finds herself stuck on the planet for 3 months waiting for her ride out of there.

Ulyssa (such a great name for a heroine) is tough, tenancious, and has a warm gooey center. Which makes her an excellent match for Kirill, the king of the panther shifters on the alien planet where she is stranded. Kirill is all alpha and trying really hard not to have a warm gooey center. Once he meets Ulyssa, he doesn't stand a chance.

I needed a book for a reading challenge where a lead character has a name starting with U and this one fit the bill. Ulyssa is an undercover agent sent to a planet to investigate a possible biological weapon. The planet is inhabited by human-like shifters (dragon shifters and large cat shifters) embroiled in a never-ending war with each other.

Ulyssa finds herself a prisoner of the newly crowned King Kirill and that is pretty much the story. Not much else happened except that every time I saw the name Kirill, in in my head I read krill and that made me laugh hysterically when I envisaged the hot and steamy romance scenes with her sea crustacean shifter love interest. An unfortunate name choice for the king who is supposed to be a big scary cat shifter as once I had the crustacean image in my head, he was never going to work for me.

Anyway, I liked the premise of this. I liked the idea of the second book's characters (none of which have crustaceany names) so I would probably be keen to pick the second book up if it ever went on sale - but the execution of this book just seemed a bit too unpolished and fan-fic to me. The writing/dialogue was a bit wooden to the point I actually felt like DNFing this and while I was expecting some very cool buffy-esque, awesome lead agent - I ended up with a very unlikable (and not overly clever) lead character. Her only redeeming feature? Her name starts with a U :-P
Nice premise. Not so good on the execution.

This author likes to use lack of communication between the H & h to create the conflict in her stories. Seldom is it an outside force with the two working together against that. This is very frustrating to many readers including me. I bought a box set with books from each of her series and the pattern is the same in all of them.

This review is from: The Savage King: A Dragon Lords Story (Lords of the Var Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
This was my second read of The Savage King by Michelle Pillow and I found myself enjoying it at a whole new level. This is the first of the Lords of The Var series which is an great spinoff of the a azing Dragon Lords Series.
One of the things that really draws me to the series and keeps me coming back for more is that most of the characters from the Dragon Lords are secondary characters and play important roles in the developing overall background story that deals with a life threatening danger to the planet.

The Var Series introduces many new characters to enjoy as well and of course there are charismatic, all too sexy, gorgeous alpha princes to welcome us.

The Var are cat shifters, they share the planet with The Draig (Dragon Shifters), with whom they are trying to find peace after years of conflicts. Most of the escalations in conflicts were instigated by the Var King Attor. Besides warring with the Draig, Attor , whose story is revealed in another book, has sworn off traditional manogomy. He has built a huge harem and has instilled his strong beliefs in his four sons.

Ulyssa is an HIA agent and has been undercover since book one, posing as Gena on the Galaxy Brides ship. Her mission being accomplished she has discarded her disguise and awaits pick up by her agency. While waiting she is discovered by Attor and thrown into his harem. Fortunately for her he meets his end before he even returns to the palace. Upon attempting to escape Ulyssa literally runs into a man who is so handsome, strong, confident, full of sexy hotness that she allows herself to be seduced. (Lots of delicious steamy love making throughout the book). He convinces her to stay with him while awaiting her pick up.

So the adventure, romance, excitement, intrigue, and fun begins and elevates throughout the book. Ulyssa is a great heroine, I loved her ability to play the obnoxious over the top Gena in the other books and turns out to be a very formidable kickass secret agent. Not only is she well able to take care of herself, she has a confident strong personality and is very comfortable with her sexuality.

Kirill is very impressed and intrigued with Ulyssa and finds he cannot fight his strong need to make her his. He's in a tough position, he has to take the thrown and lead his people. He desperately wants to be a strong king but differs from his father in many ways, most importantly he craves a long overdue peace with the Draig. He is determined to make all this happen despite the opposition a few may have to peace.
Kirill tugged at my heartstrings. He is as headstrong and determined as Ulyssa, yet he has a more sensitive side and a great sense of fairness. He will make a great King,(as well as a hunky sexy one), and is already quite devoted to his people and planet.
Kirill and Ulyssa make a wonderful couple, I became entranced in their story and loved how it grew despite all the miscommunications and misconceptions that accompany any good scifi adventure romantica story. The plot moves at a good even pace, you won't want to put the book down for long.

This story in particular was very moving at times, really pulling at my heart strings, a HEA very well earned.
Five stars of Awesome, so glad there are lots of Var Princes who have stories just waiting to be read as soon as I am finished with this review.
Reading this amazing series in order is highly suggested for optimal enjoyment.
I Love Michelle Pillow, her talent as an author is off the charts. This series is among her best, so get comfortable, have a cold drink ready to cool you down, and enjoy this amazing journey.

There is a new Var King King Kirill is the olderst of King Attor's five sons and he was not prepared to become king so soon but since his father lost his mind and attempted to kill the Draig royalty he was killed by the Draig King and his sons in a fight and now King Kirill is trying to sort through his fathers personal and business affairs he has disbanded the harem and allowed the women their freedom or they can marry the soldiers and move out of the palace the King in counters a woman in the hall and she throws herself at him he smells Nef which is a Var drink that makes human females sexually uninhibited he is attracted to her but not like this he wants to take her back to the harem but she refuses so he takes her to his home and she awakes not knowing where she is but quickly remembered what happened and that she was rejected by this man she is not aware he is the King yet she soon finds out who he is and they become lovers and she still does not let him know that shes an agent working to help destroy the Medical Mafia Ulyssa Payne has worked for the agency since she became of age and is all she knows or wants to know her mission their was over before it started because crazy Doc Aleksander came to the planet to do business with King Attor as well as get his daughter back and take her home his daughter killed him in self defense and gave everything to her mother and stayed on Qurilixen with her husband Prince Olek so she Ulyssa was in the forest on Var land where she was waiting for her ride off the planet when she was found by King Attor and his private guard and put in the harem where she remained until she escaped the night before. She and the King Kirill become close as a half mate and a King can neither admits that they are falling hard for each other until one day she is found in the royal office and she sees a report that indicates that there is a biological weapon to destroy the Draig which could also destroy the whole planet she has to stop this at all cost but she doesn't trust King Kirill enough to be honest with him and she almost stars a war. This is a very good story the characters were great the story line was very good. Recommend this book . Readers 18 years and older.
