Long gone are the days of actually having to go into a store to purchase a mattress. These days, you can shop for your new bed online with popular retailers like Walmart and sit back and relax as it arrives at your door. Not only does Walmart sell mattresses at a competitive price point, but you'll find options for every preference, budget and style. Whether you're shopping for a mattress to send your kids off to college with, one for guests or a replacement for your own tired bed, you'll find the some of the best mattresses on the market at Walmart.

The bedding experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have tested every type of mattress on the market, from memory foam mattresses to innerspring mattresses to hybrid mattresses and much more. We’ve also carefully reviewed affordable solutions like mattresses under $500 as well as hassle-free alternatives like mattresses in a box, many of which you’ll conveniently find at Walmart. To choose the best Walmart mattress, we researched and tested some of the most popular models ourselves and had consumer testers try mattresses in their own homes. We also surveyed our panel of readers about the mattress they purchased on their own, rating everything from ease of setup to comfort, sleep temperature and more.

Pros
  • Exceptionally high ratings from testers
  • Hybrid construction
  • Arrives in box
Cons
  • Only available in one firmness

It’s hard to find a better value than this super comfortable mattress from Allswell. Not only is it one of the more affordable mattresses on the market, but it's earned high ratings from our testers. We appreciate that the brand’s pricing has remained consistently low over the years and that its hybrid construction (a mix of memory foam and coils) offers adequate comfort and support. And setup should be a breeze since the mattress arrives in a compact box that’s shipped to your door for free. For anyone worried about buying a mattress online, Walmart offers a generous 90-day return policy so you have ample time to try it out and return it if you’re unsatisfied.

Tester notes: "This mattress is supportive and plush, and it feels like a fancy hotel bed," said one user. Though it’s only available in one firmness level, which has a medium-firm feel, other users said it felt comfy from day one. Just keep in mind that some also mentioned a lack of edge support, which could make it trickier for some to get in and out of bed.

Linenspa 8-Inch Hybrid Mattress

Pros
  • Super affordable
  • Easy ordering, delivery and set up according to survey respondents
  • Available in three heights
Cons
  • Not as durable as other mattresses

This mattress that sells for less than $200 at Walmart is a top choice for anyone trying not to spend a fortune on a new bed. Made primarily of innerspring coils, you can expect a traditional, bouncier feel with added pressure relief thanks to a memory foam layer that cradles your body. A built-in quilted cover adds extra cushioning and comfort to the 8-inch model's firmer feel. If you’re willing to spend a bit more but still want to stay under $500 for a Queen, the mattress is also available in 10-inch and 12-inch heights. If your preferred size is out of stock, you can also buy it on Amazon or there are other low-cost variations from the brand on Walmart.

Tester notes: Owners of this mattress gave us rave reviews about the easy ordering, quick delivery and simple setup of the boxed Linenspa mattress. "Opening the mattress was easy and took less than five minutes until I had it on the bed frame,” said one user. It also received top marks for initial comfort, but note that the mattress isn’t as quite as durable as others we’ve evaluated.

Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress

Pros
  • All-foam design provides pressure-relief
  • Features cool-touch knit cover
  • High ratings among testers for helping maintain comfortable body temperature overnight
Cons
  • Edge support could be better

If you're a hot sleeper you're probably familiar with cooling sheets, but a cooling mattress can also help you avoid sweaty nights. We like this one from Zinus that's more affordable than others on the market. It's made with layers of foam, including a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam meant to prevent overheating. We also appreciate that it's encased in a cool-touch cover and available in three heights (6, 8 or 12 inches).

Tester notes: Survey respondents loved the mattress's cover, which feels cool to the touch immediately as you lie down in bed. They also gave the mattress high ratings for helping them maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the night, and others noted that it offered pressure relief. "The memory foam contours to every curve on your body," said one user. While the edge support could be better, that's a common complaint regarding most all-foam mattresses.

Tuft & Needle Original Mattress

Original Mattress
Credit: Tuft & Needle
Pros
  • Comfortable and firm
  • Supportive foam with motion isolation
  • Under $1,000
Cons
  • Lacks edge support

Though slightly pricier than other picks on our list, Tuft & Needle's original mattress is an excellent investment that remains under $1,000, and it's a great choice for anyone who loves sleeping on memory foam. Its two layers of foam are both supportive and resilient while contouring to your body as you sleep. We also appreciate that the foam features graphite and ceramic gel to help pull away body heat and prevent overheating.

Tester notes: A favorite among our tester panel, this mattress earned high scores in every category from reviewers. Everything from the ordering process to ease of setup and customer service was top-notch. Users also raved about the mattress's firmness and motion isolation, claiming they couldn't feel their partner moving around at night. But like other foam mattresses, you may witness some sagging on the sides when you sit down due to a lack of edge support.

Serta Clarks Hill

Pros
  • Comfortable hybrid construction
  • Available in two firmness levels
  • Popular brand among our panel
Cons
  • Must purchase via brand for 120-day trial

For those who love a mattress with a traditional, bouncy feel, we recommend this hybrid model from Serta. It's one of the most commonly purchased matress brands by our survey panelists and a popular online option. A Queen model starts at just $500 and you can choose between two firmness levels, firm or plush, depending on your preferences. It's made of innerspring coils and layers of soft foam to provide the support and contouring needed for a comfortable night of sleep.

Tester notes: Feedback for Serta mattresses has been positive overall among testers. More than 1,000 Serta owners responded to our most recent survey and gave a similar innerspring model high ratings for support and comfort.

Casper Original

Pros
  • Top marks among users for comfort and sleep quality
  • Ergonomically design
  • Good customer service
Cons
  • Some users said the mattress retained heat

A pioneer in the bedding industry for its innovative mattress-in-a-box design, Casper is a popular choice among our survey panelists, experts and online consumers. The all-foam mattress is unique because it features zoned layers of memory foam that are ergonomically designed to promote spinal alignment. Though it's a splurge in comparison to other mattresses you'll find at Walmart, we think it's worth it. In addition to offering comfort and contouring support, your purchase comes with free delivery and a 100-day trial.

Tester notes: The Casper Original Mattress earned top scores among more than 150 members of our tester panel. One said it "conforms to your body immediately" and has excellent motion isolation, while others raved about how it alleviated their back pain and remained comfortable all night. Just be cautious if you’re a hot sleeper; some users told us that the mattress retained heat, but that’s a common problem with memory foam mattresses in general.

Note: Casper recently updated its entire mattress assortment, but you can still purchase the Original (which we've extensively tested) at Walmart.

How we test mattresses

double line break

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, fiber scientists and bedding experts have reviewed hundreds of mattresses over the years and continue to do so on an ongoing basis. To vet mattresses before reviewing them firsthand, we review their materials, specifications, noteworthy features and performance claims.

Next, our product analysts and consumer testers provide in-depth feedback after sleeping on mattresses for several weeks, as well as after longer periods of time. Additionally, we survey our tester panel to gather feedback on mattresses they already own. Our surveys have been filled out by over 10,000 mattress owners, leaving us with responses to more than 170,000 questions that cover everything from overall comfort and sleep temperature to delivery and setup. We combine our expert analysis, consumer testing and survey responses to decide which mattresses are worth it.

Here's a breakdown of what we consider when picking the best mattress for you:

an allswell luxe hybrid mattress being evaluated by good housekeeping's lexie sachs
LEXIE SACHS

✔️ Ordering & delivery: Reviewers share insight about their shopping experience, including the ordering and delivery process. They provide feedback on how easy it was to order a mattress and whether or not it arrived on time. If they experienced any issues, we ask them to share how the brands resolved them.

✔️ Setup: We take note of whether mattress brands offer white-glove delivery service or require you to set up the bed yourself (i.e., boxed delivery). Testers also share whether the mattress took shape promptly.

✔️ Firmness: Because brands' firmness claims aren't always consistent with how consumers perceive them when using the mattresses, we ask our testers and panelists to rate the firmness level of their mattresses: soft, medium, medium-firm, firm, etc.

✔️ Temperature regulation: In addition to evaluating brands' cooling claims and features, our reviewers and testers rate whether or not they're able to maintain a comfortable body temperature while sleeping on the mattresses.

✔️ Edge support: Users sit on the edge of their beds to determine if the mattresses sink under their body weight or if they're able to withstand the additional pressure.

✔️ Comfort and support: Testers and panelists rate the overall comfort of their mattresses, both initially and over time, as well as how much they enjoyed sleeping on them.

✔️ Sleep quality: We ask reviewers to share how the mattress affects their sleep quality and how it compares to other beds they've slept on.

✔️ Additional feedback: In open-ended questions, we allow testers and panelists to share anything they specifically like or dislike about the mattresses and any other feedback they want us to take into consideration.

What to look for when shopping for a mattress at Walmart

double line break

✔️ Sleep position: Having neutral spinal alignment while sleeping is key to preventing aches, pains and soreness. Depending on your preferred sleep position, you may need a mattress that's soft, medium or firm. In general, stomach sleepers should opt for a firmer mattress, while side sleepers will prefer a softer bed that provides adequate pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers and combination sleepers need a medium-firm mattress that's supportive enough to sleep on your back, but plush enough for hips and shoulders to sink into the mattress slightly as you change positions.

✔️ Body type: A firmer, foam mattress or hybrid option that combines foam with metal coils is an ideal mattress for heavier people or those with larger frames who require more supportive beds. Petite or lighter-weight figures tend to prefer softer, plush mattresses, but the perfect firmness level will ultimately depend on a combination of your weight and ideal sleep position.

✔️ Pain sufferers: Look for a mattress with pressure-relieving foam or one that combines plush foam and coils if you suffer from back pain. Medical experts recommend those who suffer from pain to sleep on a medium-firm mattress so they benefit from a balance of cushion and support.

✔️ Temperature: If you're a hot sleeper, don't overlook cooling or temperature-regulating claims. Because memory foam mattresses are notorious for absorbing and trapping body heat, we advise looking for foams infused with copper particles, gel and phase-change technology to help regulate your temperature at night. Our experts recommend choosing a mattress that uses coils for improved airflow if you suffer from night sweats, whether it's a hybrid or innerspring model.

✔️ Trial period: While most mattresses offer a free trial so you can make sure your new mattress is the right choice for you, if you purchase directly from Walmart it's wise to double-check that the trial period is still applicable. You should also review both the brand and Walmart's specific policies to determine if there are any associated fees for return shipping or pick-up. You can learn more about Walmart's standard return policy here, which should be 90 days for most products.
