Patrick and Brittany Mahomes: 5 Things to Know About the NFL’s New Power Couple

This is straight up Friday Night Lights.

The Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen divorce left an opening for a new NFL power couple, and Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have already stepped up to the plate. Er, field. You know what I mean. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his wife, Brittany, met back when he was a Dillon Panther and she was the cheerleading captain—just kidding. But you’d be forgiven for thinking their love story was scripted for Friday Night Lights

They’re high school sweethearts

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews were both star athletes at Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas, where they met and started dating. According to Life & Style, Brittany recalled on Instagram that their friendship blossomed into something more after Patrick gave her a Valentine’s Day card as a “joke” one day. “He just brought it to me as a funny joke, but like I thought it was the cutest thing in the world. Everyone in the cafeteria started chanting like, ‘Kiss her! Kiss her! Kiss her!’”

They both went on to have athletic careers.

Only one of the two became a quarterback in the NFL, obviously, but Brittany is a professional athlete as well. Before founding her personal fitness brand, Brittany Lynne Fitness, she played soccer in college and professionally in Iceland, according to her company’s website. Today the certified personal trainer has developed her own fitness training programs. But she hasn’t left soccer totally behind. According to her Instagram, Brittany is also a co-owner of the women’s soccer team Kansas City Current.

Patrick proposed the same day he received his Super Bowl LIV ring.

According to Us Weekly, the 2020 Super Bowl winner popped the question in a VIP box at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The proposal was followed up with a romantic dinner by candlelight in their backyard. “My heart is so full! I love this man so incredibly much and today was so so special!” she wrote on her IG Stories.

They have two kids together.

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

The couple’s two-year-old daughter, Sterling, became a big sister in November 2022 when the family welcomed their second child. On Instagram, Brittany announced the new arrival with a picture of the baby boy’s feet and a caption reading, “Patrick ‘Bronze’ Lavon Mahomes III 🤴🏽11/28/22 7lbs 8oz 🤍.”

They’ve been the targets of online trolling.

Brittany in particular tends to stir up a lot of negative online attention, though it’s not clear (to me, at least) whether it’s deserved. She’s been criticized for complaining about the refs on social media, accidentally spraying fans with a bottle of champagne after a big win, and in one case apparently just making a weird face, according to a breakdown by The Spun. The trolling has even gotten a Kansas City sports writer to devote an entire column to why the social media attacks need to cool it.
