The Targaryen family is back.

House of the Dragon fans may have waited two long years for the show’s second season, but the wait is officially over.

Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Olivia Cooke are all back for House of the Dragon season 2, which premiered its first episode on Sunday, June 16, on HBO, and has sent us all into full dragon mode.

Naturally we have a lot of questions. Are you Team Green or Team Black? Who will sit on the Iron Throne? How on earth are we meant to keep all of those in-bred blonde kids straight? Will Rhaenyra and Alicent ever kiss be friends again? But perhaps most importantly, when do the episodes actually come out?

Here, we get into House of the Dragon season 2’s release schedule, as well as a quick recap of what happened last season.

HBO

What happened in season one of House of the Dragon?

First, a quick recap. A prequel series to the cult 2010s hit Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on author George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which tells the story of the Targaryen lineage and focuses on the Velaryon and Hightower families.

It’s set 200 years before the events in GoT, and the first season featured time jumps between the younger versions of the main characters and their older counterparts. In that first season,we met Rhaenyra, the eldest child of King Viserys. She was friends with a girl named Alicent. However, when Rhaenyra’s mother died and her father picked her bestie as his new bride, things got a little frosty. After Viserys’s death, the two ex-friends became enemies as Rhaenyra challenged Alicent’s eldest son, Aegon, for the Iron Throne. (It all gets pretty complicated—our handy family tree may be helpful.)

How many episodes are in House of the Dragon season two and what can we expect?

Like season one, season two will feature a total of eight episodes. And while that may not sound like a lot, there is sure to be a lot of action to get through. The first three episodes alone covered a lot of ground. In true Game of Thrones style, allegiances shifted, children died, and it seems a certain civil war is fast approaching. (In fact, locals actually spotted the team filming what appeared to be a very big bloody battle in Wales last year.)
