These Fashion Brands Are Actually Owned by Your Favorite Celebrities

Once you "make it" as a celebrity—especially if you're one known for your sense of style—the natural progression of fame in the 21st century is to start a fashion brand. Sometimes the transition from actor or singer into a budding multihyphenate fashion designer is seamless—and it shows, with brands that make headlines for their runway shows and lines that have lasted more than a decade.

When Jessica Simpson launched her eponymous line back in 2006, the fashion world probably didn't expect her brand to become such a powerhouse—but here we are 14 years and hundreds of millions of dollars in sales later. Now we've got powerhouse Rihanna's headline-making lingerie line Savage x Fenty, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's dual-threat fashion lines, The Row and Elizabeth and James, and Reese Witherspoon's Draper James. There are so many massive success stories out there.

    The Jessica Simpson Collection: Jessica Simpson

    Jessica Simpson's eponymous fashion business—first launched as a shoe line in 2006—is one of the biggest in the bunch. The collection has expanded from footwear to clothing, sunglasses, handbags, accessories, and jewelry and, in 2015, reportedly brought in $1 billion in revenue from retailers like Macy's, Nordstrom, and HSN. Yes, you read that correctly: $1 billion. That's quite a feat for any business, let alone one that was once written off as a celebrity vanity project.

    Draper James: Reese Witherspoon

    Reese Witherspoon is already an award-winning actor and the head of a production company, but her ambition doesn't stop there. In 2015 she launched Draper James, a clothing and homewares company that serves up timeless Southern style—the kinds of pieces you could imagine Witherspoon using every single day. But just because she's in charge doesn't mean you have to be a movie star to afford the looks: Pieces range from $98 up to just over $200 for a dress. We also love the brand's collaboration with Eloquii, which makes super-stylish pieces—now with Witherspoon's signature Southern vibe—for plus-size women.

    Fabletics: Kate Hudson

    Actor Kate Hudson cofounded the activewear and athleisure line Fabletics in 2013, which carries a mission to motivate and support women in leading healthy lifestyles. The hugely successful line, rooted in a subscription-based service, includes workout essentials like leggings and sneakers. It's also received plenty of celeb love since its start, with famous women like Kelly Rowland and Demi Lovato jumping in to collaborate on collections. It's clearly working: CNBC reported in 2018 that Fabletics was planning to open 75 more stores in the U.S. and overseas.

    Good American: Khloé Kardashian

    In 2016, Khloé Kardashian paired up with Emma Grede to launch the size-inclusive denim brand Good American. "It wasn't about having a new denim line. It was about doing something that empowers other women, something that's going to break down barriers," Kardashian says about the brand on its site. Good American took its mission to heart: When staff realized it got 50% more returns on clothes in sizes 14 and 16, they created a size 15 to fit the needs of their customers. Now it's not just denim: The brand has expanded into activewear and bodysuits too.

    Uncommon James: Kristin Cavallari

    Kristin Cavallari, she of Laguna Beach and The Hills fame, made her way to Nashville and started her jewelry company, Uncommon James, a name that's a play on her daughter's middle name. Using style stars like Hailey Baldwin and Kate Moss as muses, Cavallari's brand focuses on minimalist, delicate, "feminine with an edge" pieces that range from $36 to $78. And because once a reality star, always a reality star, Cavallari and her company are now the subjects of an E! series called Very Cavallari.

    Ivy Park: Beyoncé

    All-around legend Beyoncé is no stranger to the world of business ventures, including the fashion line House of Deréon she once ran with her mom. But she expanded into activewear by teaming up with Topshop to launch the hugely popular activewear and athleisure line Ivy Park in 2016. When a #MeToo scandal hit Topshop's parent company's CEO in November 2018, however, Bey bought full ownership of the company, like a boss.

    James Mae: Kristen Doute

    Vanderpump Rules star Kristen Doute made the leap into fashion by starting James Mae, a ’70s-inspired rock-band graphic-tee clothing line she named after her niece and nephew. Some of the shirts she sells—most of which are between $30 and $45—are designed with mottos that reflect her vegan lifestyle; others branch out into off-the-shoulder, embroidered, cropped blouses. She's even added a couple of pairs of shoes to her line.

    LC by Lauren Conrad: Lauren Conrad

    It's not just Kristin Cavallari that found fashion fame after the cameras stopped rolling for Laguna Beach and The Hills: In 2009, Lauren Conrad launched a line of clothing called LC by Lauren Conrad that's sold exclusively at Kohl's. That's not all, though: She's also the brain behind Paper Crown, a line of higher-priced clothing, and The Little Market, a fair-trade-focused store with a mission of women empowering other women.

    Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw had a legendary shoe collection, so it felt like a natural move for Sarah Jessica Parker to lean into her character’s obsession and create her own eponymous high-heel line in 2014 with Manolo Blahnik CEO George Malkemus III. Each shoe is handcrafted in Tuscany, embellished with a cute ribbon on the back, and sold in various boutiques and department stores around the country.

    Fenty: Rihanna

    Pop queen Rihanna has a history of successful collaborations: There was a collaboration with Puma in 2014 and then the beauty-industry-changing launch of Fenty Beauty in 2017. But one fashion launch that really made waves was when she debuted her first size-inclusive lingerie collection, Savage x Fenty, at New York Fashion Week in 2018. And she has a new chapter in front of her too: On January 17, the New York Times reported that Rihanna is set to become the first black female designer at LVMH, the parent company of luxury design houses Dior, Givenchy, and Fendi.

    Victoria by Victoria Beckham: Victoria Beckham

    In September 2008 the former Spice Girls member launched her namesake fashion brand and, in the decade since, has become a highly acclaimed designer. Although the brand has reportedly struggled to turn a profit, there's no question about her talent or taste, which has evolved as she's turned out runway after runway. Her luxury collections are praised by editors for their day-to-night wearability, as evidenced by V herself, who tends to dress mostly in her own line's clothes.

    Fun fact about Eva Longoria: She's been sewing since she was a little kid. Given that intel you know now, it might not come as a total surprise that the actor decided to launch a clothing line combining her love of fashion and her secret skills. She debuted the affordably priced Eva Longoria Collection back at New York Fashion Week in 2017, showing that she planned to prioritize comfort and classiness. “My ultimate goal was to create a versatile line that could be made available at a great price point. Whether you love dresses, denim, or something you can wear ‘from work to wine,’ this collection has something for every woman," she wrote in her brand's mission statement.

    Inamorata Swim: Emily Ratajkowski

    Model Emily Ratajkowski has a thing for beach vibes—and just one look at her pics from dozens of sandy destinations on Instagram proves it. That's why, when she launched her swimsuit line, Inamorata, in 2017, the whole thing made perfect sense. The collection includes slinky suits, priced from $75 for single items to $160 for one-piece options, and they all give us a glimpse into Ratajkowski's creative design skills: Think twisty, string-happy options that make for edgy dips in the pool (or, as she demonstrates, some looks basically made for the ’Gram). And she knows how to smartly put her talents to use: In addition to running her line, Ratajkowski is its main model.

    Hiraeth: Rooney Mara

    Actor Rooney Mara went vegan about seven years ago, but she told Vogue she often struggled with finding clothes that reflected her values. "I realized there aren’t many [faux-leather] options available for someone like me who is interested in design and wants high-quality pieces,” she told Vogue in an interview for the launch of her line, Hiraeth. Mara teamed up with her friends Sara Schloat and Chrys Wong in 2018 and decided to come up with a solution that might help any other environmentally and socially conscious shoppers: They launched the ready-to-wear and accessories label—and it's completely animal-free. The brand is sold not just online on its own store site, but it's also available on Goop.

    Céline Dion Collection: Céline Dion

    Céline Dion is one of the greatest divas of our time, but she somehow still has the energy to put her stamp on the fashion market. She has her own eponymous line of handbags, wallets, and luggage pieces, all made with high-quality materials like suede and leather. Dion partnered with the Canadian company Bugatti to come up with the different designs, which she debuted exclusively at Nordstrom stores in 2017. If that weren't enough, Dion paired up with the children’s retailer Nununu in 2018 to launch Célinununu, a line of gender-neutral kids' clothes.

    Day Won: Candice Huffine

    Candice Huffine has changed the fashion world as a plus-size model, but she doesn't want her influence to stop there. She decided to keep inspiring positivity by starting Day Won, a size-inclusive activewear brand she launched in 2017. The line, Huffine has said, grew partially out of her experiences as a celebrated runner: She actually had previously helped start an initiative with Women's Running magazine called Project Start, to encourage women to get active. Day Won is an extension of that, declaring on its website that "all bodies are good bodies and all women CAN!" Day Won sells T-shirts, leggings, and biker shorts in sizes ranging from XS to 5X.

    Secndnture: Jordyn Woods

    Model and Kylie Jenner BFF Jordyn Woods has proved that the Dash girls aren't the only ones with a good fashion eye. In August of 2018, Woods launched Secndnture, a label that celebrates body positivity and size inclusivity. She had some experience to draw from too: Woods has previous collaborations with BooHoo, Addition Elle, and Barneys. When it made its big debut, Secndnture’s first collection included cool biker shorts, leggings, jackets, and bodysuits for a range of sizes. The best part? Everything was pretty affordable, ranging from $45 to $79.

    Serena: Serena Williams

    Serena Williams is known for her style—both in terms of her athleticism on the courts and also in terms of what she actually wears. Although she's collaborated with quite a few fashion brands in the past, she went out on her own with her namesake clothing line, Serena, in the spring of 2018. "So here I am, complete creative director, down to the grommets that we use on the jeans, the tags, our packaging…. You can see how it plays out different than anything else I’ve done," she told Glamour when the line launched.

    Unsurprisingly, it immediately amassed a huge fan base—including Williams's good friend Meghan Markle, who wore an oversize Serena blazer during her royal tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2018 with Prince Harry. (The duchess, by the way, is also the likely inspiration for the cropped "Royal" hoodie in Williams's debut collection.)

    Calia: Carrie Underwood

    Country superstar Carrie Underwood saw a gap in the activewear market when she was looking for clothes to suit her own lifestyle—a gap that led her to launch Calia in 2015. "Just as someone who leads an active lifestyle in general, I noticed a big gap in what was in the store…what things I could go buy," she said. "Either things seemed to be super technical and unattractive, or…I don't know, just not feminine." Her wide-ranging product line (in standard and plus sizes) includes workout wear, swimwear, jackets, and accessories.

    Kendall + Kylie: Kendall and Kylie Jenner

    After years of collaborating with other brands, Kendall and Kylie Jenner launched their very own ready-to-wear and accessories line, Kendall + Kylie, back in 2015. Since then, they've sold trendy, affordable pieces as well as more expensive capsule collections for retail outlets like Neiman Marcus. But the business hasn't been without controversy from time to time—including a 2017 misstep in which the sisters repurposed images of musicians like Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. on T-shirts without permission. "We are huge fans of their music and it was not our intention to disrespect these cultural icons in any way," Kendall wrote in a Twitter apology. "The tee shirts have been pulled from retail and all images have been removed. We will use this as an opportunity to learn from these mistakes and again, we are very sorry."

    Alexa Chung did a bit of everything in the fashion world before creating her own brand: She's modeled, hosted various style-focused TV shows, sat in many a front row for designers who name-checked her as a muse, and in 2010 was awarded the British Style Award by the British Fashion Council, which recognizes "an individual who embodies the spirit of British fashion and is an international ambassador for the U.K. as a leading creative hub for fashion."     Sure, we first got to know her as Paris Hilton's wild best friend on reality television, but Nicole Richie has since transformed herself into a top designer with her House of Harlow 1960 line. The boho-with-a-side-of-rock-and-roll aesthetic of the brand very much reflects Richie's own style—in fact, she's often acted as the brand's spokesmodel.     Ellen DeGeneres has one of the most identifiable celebrity styles around, with her perfectly tailored suits and incredible collection of shoes. But it wasn't until 2015 that she decided to bring the vibe to her legions of fans with ED, which has everything from clothing and accessories to pet, baby, and home items. "ED is an extension of my lifestyle and is inspired by who I am as a person," DeGeneres says on her website. "ED is things that I see as a necessity, and things that are playful too.     Ibtihaj Muhammad, the fencer who made history as the first American to compete at the Olympics in a hijab, started her own label in 2014 called Louella.     In 2017, comedian and actor Rebel Wilson launched Rebel x Angels, a fashion-forward lifestyle brand for plus-size women.     Candice Swanepoel got a close look into the swimsuit industry as a supermodel and Victoria's Secret Angel, then brought her know-how to create Tropic of C, a swimsuit line that tries to incorporate as many green technology strategies and sustainable practices as possible.     Actor Jessica Alba ventured into natural products when she founded The Honest Company. Now the wellness brand includes several different lines, among them baby products, makeup and cosmetics, and home goods.
