Trump addresses supporters during rally in Washington

WASHINGTON, US - JANUARY 06: Thousands of Trump supporters gathered in US capital on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when President-elect Joe Biden was to formally receive votes in Congress to confirm his election. The crowd held a massive 'Stop the Steal' rally demanding Congress not certify the results. In accordance with security measures, major roads in the US capital were closed. Despite Biden's victory, President Donald Trump has refused to concede and has spent the last two months challenging the result, in addition to a recent attempt to put pressure on an official from the southern state of Georgia to find votes to overturn the results. The challenge was initially raised by Sen. Josh Hawley from Missouri, a close ally of Trump, when he became the first lawmaker to publicly state Dec. 30 that he would object to certifying Biden's win. More than 140 Republican members of the House are expected to challenge the official counting of the Nov. 3 election, despite Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Majority Whip John Thune asking Republicans not to do it.
