Reigning All-Star Mile champion Mr Brightside is ready to do Lindsay Park proud again on Saturday in the $3.75m showdown at Caulfield.

The six-time Group 1 and $12.3m prizemoney winner, the sixth highest earner in Australian racing history, is a $1.85 favourite with TAB to become the first back-to-back All-Star Mile champion.

Trainer Ben Hayes said Mr Brightside has “ticked all the boxes”.

“He’s fit and ready to go … the barrier is a little bit tricky, it’s a race with lots of speed but he’s more than capable of being just behind that speed and being in striking range,” Hayes said.

The $2m first prize on Saturday would put Mr Brightside within range of Makybe Diva ($14.5m) and the late Verry Elleegant ($14.8m) on the racing rich list.

Four-time Cox Plate champion Winx has the record at $26.4m.

“He’s a champion for us and if he can win (a second All-Star Mile) he’s really stamping his mark as one of Australia’s best racehorses,” Hayes said.

“Hopefully he can do it, we’re very happy with him going into the race, if he gets the right run he hopefully gets the job done.”

Cascadian ‘the forgotten horse’ in All-Star Mile

Likely leader and multiple Group 1 winner Pride Of Jenni, $3.80 second favourite, looms as the biggest threat to Mr Brightside on Saturday.

Mr Brightside has been best backed with TAB, responsible for 60 per cent of All-Star Mile win bets.

Pride Of Jenni holds 10 per cent of the bookmaker’s pool from Cascadian, 8 per cent, and Ayrton, 7 per cent, the subject of a betting rally on Friday.

Pride Of Jenni fended off Mr Brightside in the Champions Mile last spring.

He returned the favour in the CF Orr Stakes, nailing Pride Of Jenni on the post.

“It’s going to be a real spectacle at the top of the straight, I’m sure (brothers and co-trainers) Will, JD and I will be holding our breath, but we trust the horse,” Hayes said.

“He has never let us down and he’s always run really well … I just hope he’s close enough coming to the bend and he can get the job done.

“We really respect her (Pride Of Jenni) and we’ll try and not let her get too far in front, that will be the plan.”

Hayes said the two “good hard runs” in the CF Orr and Futurity Stakes has steeled Mr Brightside to overcome any adversity on Saturday.

“There’s so much speed … we’re a chance to be caught three-wide or slot in, but that’s the risk we have to take,” Hayes said.

“He’s third-up now and ready to go, we’ll ride him where he lands, if he’s three wide so be it.”
