Car plunges off 6th Street Bridge; driver killed

A motorist killed when his vehicle went off the Sixth Street Bridge in Boyle Heights and landed on its roof on the 5 Freeway was publicly identified Monday.

Steven De Vone was 56 years old, according to the coroner's office. His city of residence was not available.

The crash occurred at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday on the southbound 5 Freeway at Whittier Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The vehicle "may have come off an overcrossing onto the freeway," the CHP said.

The crash triggered a Sigalert that closed four lanes of the southbound freeway until 4:24 a.m.

De Vone was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner's office said. No other injuries were reported.
