Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer is a big hit with Netflix viewers globally, but how did it do opposite Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F?

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Washington stars as Robert McCall in the big screen adaptation of CBS’ hit 1980s series of the same name starring Edward Woodward.

In the film version of The Equalizer, Robert—who is a former Marine and retired Defense Intelligence Agency officer—uses his skills to battle a Russian crime syndicate. The Equalizer has spawned two sequels to date: The Equalizer 2 in 2018 and The Equalizer 3 in 2023.

According to the streaming service, The Equalizer debuted at No. 8 on the Netflix Global Top 10 Movies chart for the week of July 1-7 with 3.5 million views, which equates to 7.6 million viewing hours. Word on The Equalizer’s big debut on Netflix comes just hours after Washington’s appearance in the new trailer for director Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 opposite Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.

Not surprisingly, the Netflix original movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F dominated the Netflix Global Top 10 Movies chart with 41 million views, which equates to 80.7 million hours viewed.

Directed by Mark Molloy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. features the return of Eddie Murphy as Detroit Police Detective Axel Foley. Murphy reunites with several cast members from 1984’s first Beverly Hills Cop movie in Axel F, including Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot.

In addition No. 1 on the Netflix U.S. Movies chart, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a top 10 hit on Netflix in 92 other countries worldwide.

‘A Family Affair’ Drops To No 2

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. knocked the Netflix original movie A Family Affair out of the No. 1 spot on the streamer’s Global Top 10 Movies chart after one week at the top.

Starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, the romantic comedy had 31.9 million views—which equates to 60.6 million hours viewed—in its second week of release.

Jessica Alba’s Netflix original crime drama Trigger Warning (8 million views/14.2 hours viewed) came in at No. 3 on the chart, while the animated feature Paw Patrol the Movie (5.2 million views/7.5 million hours viewed) was No. 4.
