Australian Snow Gums # 3

These two snow gums are in the Alpine National Park and are standing in front of snow gums saplings on the Tamboritha Saddle.

The Tamboritha Saddle is northeast of the town of Licola in Victoria, Australia, and this saddle is a flat area at the top of the climb up from the Wellington River and it sits at 1,280 meters.

Low cloud covered the area which saw no sun whilst I was there however, the low cloud did not intrude lower than about 50 meters below the saddle.

In fact, the only sun light I saw for the whole day was as I passed thru Licola at 4 pm and even then, it only lasted for

3-minutes.

The Snow Gum grows in cold areas above 700 meters and it is among the hardiest of all the eucalyptus species as it survives the severe winter temperatures of the Australian Alps.

Sometimes the bark of the Snow Gum is made up of white, green, grey or yellow patches revealed when the bark peels off - the patches of bark are often red/orange on the underside.

The Snow Gum has the ability to shed its bark and the different colored patches are a result of this characteristic and this ability allows the Snow Gum to recover from any damage caused by cold weather, ice, snow or fires
