Mandal river

The municipality is named after the town of Mandal, which in turn is named after the Mandalen river valley in which it is located.

The name Mandal which comes from the Old Norse name Marnardalr.

The first element is the genitive case of the river name Mǫrn (now Mandalselva) and the last element is dalr which means "valley" or "dale".
