Barbara Ruiz the Salsa Queen. Dundas West Fest

Managed to see just one performance this year at Dundas West Festival. Yani Borrell and Barbara, (sometimes Barbie), Ruiz, her deep Cuban roots on display and with excellent orchestra behind them entertained maybe 200 salsa dancers on the street.

Yousy Barbara Ruiz (born 1976) has been compared to the legendary Célia Cruz. Her hometown is Camagüey, but her home is now Montreal. She was successful in Cuba, but I guess despite the ice, snow and cold, life may be easier in Quebec. Her “Cubanness” is however intact. Would you think, that this woman, with oversize jewellery, was at one time aspiring basketball player and a physical education teacher?
