Dartmouth Castle at the mouth of the River Dart.

Begun in the 1380s to protect the town from French attack it was expanded at the end of the 15th century and again in 18th and 19th. It was brought back into service briefly in the 2nd WW. Across the river is Kingswear Castle and a chain could be stretched between the two.

Dartmouth Castle includes the much earlier chapel of St Petroc within its walls.

Taken fairly early in the day from the little passenger ferry which is heading for the jetty and steps on the right. I was the only passenger! I meant to go back at some point in the week later in the day when the sun would have been behind me but never made it.
