the Malacca River

Malacca, or Melaka as it is called today, was an important port along the Chinese maritime silk route during the Ming dynasty and it was visited by Portuguese, Dutch and British ships too. Today, the river has been separated from the sea (the Straits of Melaka) by a barrier to control tides and the only boats that go up and down the river are cruise-boats carrying tourists.
