Spokane, Washington-based photographer Chip Phillips began his relationship with photography in 2006 when his father gave him his old Pentax Spotmatic film SLR camera. Chip was immediately hooked, and soon made the transition to digital. Given his lifelong love of the outdoors, he naturally made the progression to focusing on landscape photography. A professionally trained classical musician, Chip performs as Principal Clarinet with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, and is Professor of Clarinet at Gonzaga University. Chip’s images have been published in various magazines, including Popular Photography and Imaging, Digital Photography, and Digital Photo Magazine. Most recently, Chip won first and second place in the landscapes category of Digital Camera magazine's 2009 Photographer of the Year contest.

Chip is one of the rare people who has all the elements of a truly great photographer - not just the ability to see and compose scenes, but also the tireless work ethic that drives him to incredible places at all hours of the day and night...all in an effort to find the most elusive light and captivating scenes. Then, he's got the intellectual capability and surgeon-like technical skills to capture the scene and process it in a way that preserves the magical light he saw when he was there in person. It's plain to see that this whole process, from beginning to end, is painstakingly executed to perfection. It is this incredibly rare combination of vision, dedication, and ability that will make Chip one of the great landscape photographers of the new digital age.

Chip Phillips has to be the most amazing landscape photographer I have found on Flickr to date. Every one of his photos is a stand-alone work of true professional art. He not only finds the best angles and compositions, but he knows his craft to perfection and can capture the scenes before his eyes in a way that transcends the ordinary landscape photograph and enters the realm of a perfect impression of all points that move the heart expertly combined into a single exceptional image. I have viewed photographs of countless high-level professional landscape artists from a dozen countries and the number that produce the kind of work that Chip Phillips does I could count on one hand with fingers to spare. I eagerly await news of Chip's first book!

Chip is one of the people that really stands out to me on flickr. I noticed his work early on and felt an immediate connection with it. I think it's pretty incredible how our relationship has been symbiotic in that we feed off each others work, and gain inspiration from one another. I think he is my long lost landscape brother. The difference between us is that I have slacked with my landscapes while Chip has put in the miles and built up a portfolio that completely kicks my ass. This guy just keeps getting better and better and I have some serious catching up to do. I am always impressed by Chip's drive to create mind blowing images. He has made some of my favorite images of all time.

This is one of the truly fine Flickr sites. Each image stands alone as unique work of art. Amid mind-boggling color there are fine B&W images as well. This site, and Chip's personal website, are worth extended viewing time.

I just discovered Mr Phillips yesterday. I am not a professional photographer. Yet, although landscape photography is quite common, he manages to capture angles that contain so much energy. well done & keep it up

Not only is Chip an amazing clarinet player, he also has a great eye for photography. His shots have amazing color balance and the composition is excellent. He will even put on boots and wade in freezing water just to get the right shot. I'm sure he has done some other crazy stuff to get shots. Rock on, Chip...... … Read more
