I have known Henk Meijer for relatively short period of time but during that period I have followed him and his work intensively. Henk is a unique person and artist pur sang who does not settle for mediocrity in photography! He is a genius and creative at what he does, a master of light and color who has a sharp eye for capturing the essence and beauty of his objects. Henk has a particular passion for architecture and monumental landscape but does not shy away from taking portraits of people whom he met along the road on his trips abroad. Henk is funny and cheeky and has a razor- sharp wit but never to a point of offending or insulting people. Henk posseses many social qualities for which he is admired. He is considered at the top of his trade but always addressing people at eye level, never looking down at anyone and never condescending. People love him because he pays attention to their work, guides whereever needed and along the way, gives his followers sense of value and respect as he takes them out of the shadow straight into the spotlight. By doing so, he inadvertently raises the bar for everyone, thereby creating a new generation of young photographers who seek quality. Henk is always himself and knows to set his own priorities and to guard them at all times. Always generous to fellow artists, always commenting on works of colleagues but always maintains his own special and unique style and does not tend to follow random trends. Henk possesses a rare sense of self spot, and his dry sense of humor is always drawing laughter. But what makes Henk stand out is his transparency, sincerity and truthfulness. The very first time I stumbled across Henk's photostream, boxes immediately started to tick. Looking at his photos grabbed my attention like a good thrilling book whose pages you cannot stop turning. The places his images have taken me were precisely those very same places I always wanted to visit myself. When we meet someone in person we can get an idea of what type of person they are by their body language and tone of voice. In an online photo sharing site, it is, of course, different. You get to know someone by their photos, and the comments they leave. Henk's comments are not just thoughtful. He is completely generous with his time, advice and encouragement (but don't just take my word for it. Scroll below and read some other testimonials). His comments made me smile on so many occasions and in others I was laughing out loud with tears in my eyes. There are some incredible photographers on this site, but Henk's photos are beyond technical perfection. They convey warmth, peace, tranquility, security, and if I had to use one word, it would be humanity itself. As a person, Henk defines charm and as a photographer he is nothing less than truly inspirational. When my daughter was 12 years old, I first showed her Henk's gallery and she also became a huge fan. When you can inspire a 12 year old you’ve got something special. I read somewhere once that: "Best friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like leaves, found everywhere." Henk is a pure diamond.

Well, what can I say about Henk Meijer that hasn't been said before in comments and critiques? I'll give it a try: The work of Henk is a lesson and masterclass in photography. Pay particular attention to his use of light, soft light that is. A guarantee of great pictures is to choose soft and golden light, this is key and Henk has opened the door for all of us to learn. His structure of composition, accuracy of processing and crispness of image delivers the quality we have all come to expect from his postings. From the days I first encountered his work on the Trek Earth site in 2006 to this day, the quality of Henk's photography has been consistently impressive and never fails to inspire. Keep inspiring us Henk; I shall be watching your work closely.

I've only seen very few of Henk's photos but from what I've seen, I can already tell he's a very professional, dedicated and a very talented artist. A lot of people can take photographs nowadays, but not a lot can take beautiful, well-presented, well thought-out light-and-color infused photos like Henk does. Light is the heart of photography. Everybody knows that. 'The ability to see subtle changes in the light on a subject is a key to professional quality work and is part of what makes a photograph not a snap shot.' Back in the XVII century there was a guy named Rembrandt who also was aware of this. His purposeful use of light and shade to create atmosphere in his works took him beyond the conventional. He even used it not only to create drama, but also to compose the entire painting. Light was his salvation. This brief prologue has only the purpose to introduce Henk, who I friendly like to see as a reincarnation of the old Flemish masters. If the challenge of all good photography is the control of light, Henk is surely one of the best photographers this world has to offer. Other than that, he has an impressive ability to compose and frame the reality in a way that always enriches the photographed subject. His technical skills are tremendous and you will have to work hard to find a single imperfection in one of his pictures. A true photographer.
