Dilettante. Looking at old photos upon my mother’s passing at 102, and then a daughter giving birth, I thought I'd make an album of digitally re-photographed black and white 10x8 prints taken up to fifty years ago with my first non-toy camera, an Olympus 35SP. Recovery of some negatives and slides made scanning possible in some cases, and revealed that other cameras had also been used. The result is the album '2020 Hindsight'. Since then I have added other images, some also old, but many quite recent.

 

The exercise led me to replace my long sold-off Olympus 35SP. However, complex eye changes in the intervening decades make it harder to use. I intend to try it, but so far the later additions have been scans from further discoveries of old prints, shots made with iPhones, or more recently, a new compact digital Camera.

 

I once read advice that photographers should develop a ‘style’. That may be best for pros, but it is not my ideal. For me, photographer artists should be able to see a “world in a grain of sand” and capture any element of interest in front of their eyes as they follow their unique trajectories through space-time — whether the interest is aesthetic, emotional, testament, abstract, human, landscape, flesh, shape, colour, simple, complex, near, far…
