I'm sure 90% of us live within 15 minutes of a river. So what's your favorite one?

I don't really have any favourites, or my favourite could be said to be the nearest river worth photographing. At the moment it must be the Iowa River, which definitely adds something to Iowa City. Before that, there were, in no particular order of importance, the Colombia, the Seine, the Pesos, Namsen, Nidelva, the Regnitz, the Rhine, and a few others I have probably forgotten, including a few that didn't even have water in them. Wadis can look terrific in photographs!

The River Murray in South Australia! Very diverse in both scenery and useages - the life line of South Australia - and yet a play ground for many with water sports, house boating or fishing - not a bad spot for a photo or two as well! (Visit Mannum - one of the prettiest towns on the Murray River System!!!)

I have spent time on the Yukon River in Alaska, my choice. Very wild for a large river. In its 1400 miles across Alaska; only 1 bridge, only 3 places it is touched by the road system.

My favorite river is the River Tyne, Northumbria, UK. The south tyne starts from Alston, Cumbria, in the North Pennines, and North Tyne starts at Bellingham in Northumbria national park. North and south Tyne meets up near Hexham and flows to Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank and Gateshead on the south bank. These two citys used to have large dock yards for all types of commercial shipping and ship building on the Tyne was once a large concern for Newcastle and surrounding area. The Tyne finally ends at Tynemouth at the North Sea. Now that there is no more heavy industry on the Tyne, the water is as clear as crystal, and is restocked with fish, the Tyne is now a place of beauty and is the hub of life for Newcastle, and North East England.

The Yarra River, originally Birrarung, is a river in east-central Victoria, Australia. The lower stretches of the river is where the city of Melbourne was established in 1835 and today Greater Melbourne dominates and influences the landscape of its lower reaches. From its source in the Yarra Ranges, it flows 242 km west through the Yarra Valley which opens out into plains as it winds its way through Greater Melbourne before emptying into Hobsons Bay in northernmost Port Phillip.

Since I have been living in Japan, the Ara River (Arakawa) has been my favourite. There are so many interesting spots where ancient metamorphic rocks are exposed and narrow gorges are cut through. I just visited a favourite location recently and posted several photos.

For me, Caño Cristales is the most amazing river. It's called the river of five colors. It's amazing! Caño Cristales is located in Colombia. It's red from June to November. This is crazy... There are a lot of waterfalls, like this Caño Cristales is a Photographer's Paradise. I prepared a very useful aerial guide, that you can see here: www.canocristales.co/360/aerial/ with aerial 360 picture with connection with the some still photographs. You are welcome to Caño Cristales (Colombia)... (from June to November). Here more info: www.cano-cristales.com 116 months ago (permalink) |

My favorite river is the Maumee River in Ohio. In the Spring 500,000 Lake Erie walleye run up the river to spawn where countless fishermen are waiting for their chance to trigger a strike and bring home some dinner. Then in Summer there are times where the river is low enough that you can walk over to the island in the middle of it, and then in late Summer/early Fall some mornings will have fog on the river, creating some nice landscape photo opportunities. People can even kayak along the river, and it also powered a mill that was originally built in the 19th century and is still in use today. History, nature, and recreation all come together on that river. I'm happy to live right by it.

I would have to say that my favorite river, (would be the one I grew up next to, playing in, building rope swings and learning to fish in) is the River Swale in the northern part of the county of Yorkshire in England. |
