Hey everyone. I just wanted to let everyone that I am moving to New Bern from Pittsburgh, PA and how excited I am. The town is beautiful and I can't wait to do some shooting downtown and in the surrounding areas. I never had the chance to venture around town too much, so I was wondering if anyone can give me any direction or tips on the area?
Also, my family is coming with my wife and I for our move next week and I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a really good family restaurant that I could take them to thank them for their help. I appreciate it, thank you!

Hi Zachery -- welcome to New Bern from another newcomer. My husband and I just moved here, too. We've had a house here for several years in anticipation of retirement (we're in a different stage of life from you!) and landed here permanently just before Christmas. When the weather is warmer, I hope to have a "meet-up" in New Bern with any local group members who feel like coming.

As for restaurants, our ultimate favorite is Captain Ratty's -- www.captainrattys.com. Right downtown and something for everyone.

P.S.
I went to Allegheny College in Meadville (a long time ago).

P.P.S.
I like shooting at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

As for places to shoot! No problem with that, head out in any direction, or perhaps you might want to take a look at my photos here, I mapped them for you, just check and click on the links.

Of course I am not a resident of New Bern, I am just a long time lover of this magical place.

ScribeGirl--It's neat to see you went to Allegheny College, I went to IUP (Indiana Univ. of PA) so it is at least in the same state! I would be very interested in meeting up with some other Flickr users. After being uprooted from my shooting buddies here in PA I'll need to meet some people who love to shoot in NC because I don't really like to go out and about alone, it can be boring. Thank you!

GStrader--I visited New Bern last week but was only there for a day. I drove through downtown and it looked amazing for photography. I can only imagine what the surrounding areas are like. Here in western PA, shooting is what you make it. There are only so many run down coal mines and nature vistas you can shoot before it gets cliche and redundant. So the true volume of what the New Bern area has in relation to things to shoot excites me! I'll be checking out your photos, thanks!

If you are interested, I am writing a blog following my move. I hope that it is entertaining because I envision some interesting moments in my move south. You can find it at uprootedphotographer.com. Thank you again!!!

Lots of different areas here for photographs, it pretty much depends on what your interests are. Downtown is very nice, and lots of history here too. There is also the old cemetery if you have an interest in graves that date back to the late 1700's. I recently moved to New Bern from the Cleveland area, and love it here!! If you are still looking for a great restaurant, Morgan's Tavern is our personal favorite.

Welcome to New Bern... although i am still new to the area and def. looking for opportunities to get out and shoot some. My fiance and I recently moved from Raleigh so we are still learning the area. But downtown is a great place to shoot... and if you feel like traveling some, there are a few light houses within a reasonable drive. Hope your transition goes smoothly.
