Group Rules - Update
tshore says:
I have just updated the Group Rules to reflect the relationships we have with the new t.o.night free daily as well as the National Post. Here is the update: |
Lú_ says:
Does uploading here constitute permission to publish in print editions or only online?

tshore says:
The thinking was that if you upload a high res photo to the pool than that would constitute permission. Does that makes sense? If not, we could explore using a tag "blogtophoto" or something that needs to be applied for the photos to be eligible to appear in print.

Will these publications be compensating the photographers who have their images published?

Metrix X says:
What does high resolution mean? Is it too much to ask that they want a higher resolution photo that they ask as high resolution photos are more useful to image thieves. Also are the creative commons and copyrights still going to be checked and honoured?

If the photos are going to be used in print editions I think that there should be some form of compensation for the photographers. Exposure is great and I certainly am grateful for the times when blogTo has chosen to feature my work in one way or another but when it comes to existing print publications which have been accustomed to paying for their content why suddenly provide that for free? |

Stephen Gardiner says:
@tshore - No, that doesn't make sense. The concept of uploading a High-Res Image as granting permission is problematic (not to mention there is no definition of what a high-res image is). I think you need to have a tag or system whereby an uploader would be able to clearly indicate we approve the further assignment of any usage rights we are granting to BlogTO to the National Pest for print purposes. As well, i expect that the Pest would basically be looking for free use as opposed to paying for the use of images, which hurts the professional photographers who work for the paper and anyone out there who occasionally makes an image sale to a paper or publication. |

Since blogTO relies heavily on great photography how about offering weekly, reasonable & fair honorariums for photographers that you & your subsidiaries feature. The "exposure" provided by a photo credit doesn't pay for the cost of an internet connection, or even a bargain lunch bento box. Imagine the exposure blogTO would get when your readership realizes that contributors are actually compensated in some meagre way!

Thanks for your feedback everyone. We're going to use an opt in model. You'll need to apply a specific tag if you want your photo to be eligible to be considered for print. That way, untagged photos won't appear in t.o.night magazine, the National Post or elsewhere. |

Thanks! It's much appreciated -- particularly as now I don't have to go through the group pool to see what I have to avoid conflict with other licenses.

Can you tell me if the photos are only use once and after they used it for the paper, are these photos become copyrighted property to the national post. Do they keep it at national post's photo library?
