Art for non-snobs is snobbism.

Snobs have a superiority complex.
Non-snobs have a inferiority complex.
It's the attitude and it has nothing to do with the intrinsic value of art.

"Art for non-snobs is snobbism" - yes, and no. Snobs have a superiority complex; but non-snobs have an inferiority complex? I disagree. "Snobs" to me are people who are into art. At all. I've been in art school, in galleries, my parents, most of my friends and contacts are artists. Art snobs are not artists. They're the ones buying into trendy, hipster things; getting into something because it's hip, not even *asking themselves if that art have any intrinsic value in their eyes...

They're close-minded, either extremely elegant or gritty for style, have opinions on everything superior to everyone else's, go into galleries, talk and talk about their (supposed) interest for art; usually won't pay/seem interested to purchase if the artist is not hip and the price really high.
I most include in that category the strangely jealous art teacher whose pleasure is to make students suffer by telling them how much they suck. Those teachers are usually quite talented but got an abrupt end to their career, and I think we know why.
I consider myself to be a non-snob. I love Banksy, I love comic books, I love Van Gogh, I love animes. Trends are bullshit. I believe anyone who create anything *is* an artist!
I hate the whole culture of elitism stinking like hell in most art schools.
Trust me, there are a lot of individuals who fall in this category. I'd say that a good part of people coming into galleries have no genuine interest for art. They have an interest in looking trendy and cool...

I'm a little bit of an hipster myself, true. I am snobing the snobs? Perhaps. But I can't stand elitism about art... that's it.

Have a good one!

You can reject snobbism. And that's it. Forget it.
If you profile yourself as a non-snob, you are importing snobbism in your own life.
The result is, that you must tell to everybody that you are not a snob.
Who are you?

Mount Fuji Man says:

The sort of snobbery I encounter is generally in response to my negative comments about say an exhibition of abstract expressionist art. I am in effect told that if only I had more knowledge of art I would appreciate it.

The snobbery doesn't necessarily come from the artists responsible for the work. It comes from people who believe that they are among a small minority, an elite, who truly understand. If we, the uninformed, emerge from a Joan Miro exhibition scratching our heads it's our fault for not trying hard enough.

I'll post some images of art that I think fits the bill; I suppose that the brief is a wide one and that anything that doesn't require specialist knowledge to understand is fair game.
