Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the futility of resolving conflicts through violence during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. Addressing the Ukraine conflict, PM Modi stressed that peace dialogue cannot succeed amidst bombs, guns, and bullets. “For a bright future for the new generation, peace is most essential,” he stated.

During his first visit to Moscow since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, Modi held bilateral talks with President Putin. In his televised remarks, the PM assured Putin and the global community that India stands on the side of peace and is ready to contribute to ending the conflict in Ukraine. He highlighted the human cost of the war, particularly the loss of innocent lives, including children, calling it “heart-wrenching and very painful.”

Referring to an informal meeting with Putin on Monday, Modi expressed hope after listening to the Russian president’s views. “At our meeting yesterday, we listened to each other’s views on Ukraine, and I also placed before you the Global South’s expectation on peace and stability,” Modi said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked PM Modi for trying to help find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis. “I am grateful to you for the attention you pay to the most pressing issues, particularly trying to find ways to resolve the Ukraine crisis, primarily through peaceful means,” Putin was quoted as saying by the official TASS news agency. He made the statement during his talks with Modi at the Kremlin, it said.

The prime minister also acknowledged Russia’s assistance to India in the energy sector. “When the world was facing shortages of food, fuel, and fertilizers, we did not allow our farmers to face any problem, and our friendship with Russia played a role in that,” he noted. Modi expressed a desire for further cooperation with Russia to ensure the welfare of Indian farmers.

Modi emphasized that stronger ties between India and Russia would greatly benefit both nations’ people. He also addressed the ongoing challenge of terrorism, condemning all its forms. “India has been facing the challenge of terrorism for around 40 years; I condemn all forms of terrorism,” he stated.
