Introduction
A family's worth of bikes takes up a ton of space in the garage. And even one bike can pose a storage problem for a student in a studio apartment.
This bike hanger is right at home in either location. Your bike hangs on the front, there's room for your helmet, gloves and shoes, and it all looks great.
This easy-to-build, affordable bike hanger can be built in a day from less than a quarter-sheet of plywood. Have more than one bike? Make as many as you need!
Tools Required

Materials Required
- (1) 2' x 4' x 3/4" Baltic birch plywood
- (2) 3" lag screws
- (20) #8 1-1/4" screws
- Wood finish or paint

Project step-by-step (8)
Step 1
Cut the parts
- Cut the parts on the table saw. Note the grain direction for all the cuts.
- NOTE: If plywood isn’t your style, make it out of your favorite hardwood.
Step 2
Cut the hanger bracket
- Draw a two-inch circle centered two inches from the front and three inches up from the bottom of the hanger bracket (D).
- Cut out the shape with a jigsaw and smooth the rough edges with 120-grit sandpaper.
Step 3
Attach the bottom
- Attach the bottom (C) to the hanger brackets with 1-1/4-inch screws.
Step 4
Drill mounting holes
- Drill two 1/4-inch holes 16 inches on center with each other, two inches down from the top of the back (B).
Step 5
Make the wall shelf
- Screw the top (A) to the back with 1-1/4-inch screws.
Step 6
Assemble the bike hanger
- Attach the shelf assembly to the hanger rack with 1-1/4-inch screws.
Step 7
Apply a finish
- Sand the assembled bike hanger and apply your favorite wood finish. Baltic birch looks fantastic with a clear finish. If that’s not for you, go with a favorite solid paint color.
Step 8
Mount to the wall
- Align the pre-drilled mounting holes to studs on the wall.
- Attach the bike hanger to the wall using three-inch lag screws.
- Pro tip: Do not use drywall anchors. A fully-loaded bike hanger may cause the drywall to fail.
