RYAN GOSLING MIGHT be the busiest man in Hollywood right now. Fresh off of co-starring in 2023’s highest grossing film and delivering a stirring rendition of ‘I’m Just Ken’ at last month’s Oscars, filmmakers are lining up to secure the Gos. His latest film, high-octane action-comedy The Fall Guy, releases in Australian cinemas from today – a full nine days before its American release. Score one for Australia.

It’s not often that Australians get to see blockbuster films before our friends in the Northern hemisphere, but given that The Fall Guy was almost entirely filmed in Sydney – and caused numerous traffic disruptions during stunt sequences – Australians can feel like they’ve earned the right to see Ryan Gosling’s latest hit before everyone else.

Universal Studios.

Staying with Gosling, the 43-year-old shines in The Fall Guy, and it’s not just down to his acting chops. David Leitch, the director of The Fall Guy, recently told Esquire that Gosling is “an incredible actor.” The film’s producer, Kelly McCormick, was similarly glowing in her superlative-laden assessment of Gosling. “He’s a top-class man. The best. The coolest,” she said.

Likewise, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph that adorns Gosling’s wrist throughout The Fall Guy can be classed in the same tier of excellence.

The watch in question is the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox 39mm (reference number CBS2210.FC6534). It was released at Watches & Wonders 2023 and reimagines the classic reverse panda 2447 NS model, which was originally launched by Heuer in the 1960s. A similar Carrera Chronograph was also unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2024, bearing the same ‘panda’ configuration.

Gosling is a Tag Heuer ambassador and even serves as the brand’s ‘Chief Quality Officer’, proving to be an ardent admirer of the luxury watchmaker in the past. In Barbie, he wore three different vintage Heuer Carreras (at the same time, mind you), and at the Oscars, Gosling sported a Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde – with an elaborate lab-grown diamond – underneath all that pink. What we mean to say is that it’s by no means a revelation to see Gosling wearing yet another TAG Heuer watch, but such is the allure of this particular watch that it commands heightened attention.

The watch’s black dial is adorned with three sub dials (known to watch nerds as a tricompax layout). All three sub dials are white, giving off the appearance of a certain species of giant bear endemic to China – hence the panda nickname. The watch also makes use of the domed glassbox sapphire crystal recent Carreras have experimented with, a design reminiscent of the vintage acrylic crystals of Heuer’s earlier timepieces.

The glassbox is framed by a tapered 39mm steel case, while TAG Heuer’s signature Calibre TH20-00 automatic movement powers the watch. The Carrera Chronograph is already a distinctive watch, but its idiosyncrasy is further enhanced by a date complication placed at the 12 o’clock position, rather than the traditional 6 o’clock.

When the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph was relaunched in 2023, it was greeted with much fanfare. Retailing at a refreshingly non-exorbitant price of $9,350, the watch has headlined TAG Heuer’s recent retro-inspired resurgence. Horological enthusiasts have had to wait a little longer to see it in action in The Fall Guy, the only question that remains is whether the film will be as good as the watch. See for yourself, The Fall Guy is in cinemas now.
