Emma Roberts’ family didn’t help get her foot in the door—it caused it to slam in her face.
In fact, the Scream Queens actress—whose aunt is Julia Roberts and dad is actor Eric Roberts—said she has experienced nearly the opposite of most nepo babies.
“I’ve lost more jobs than I’ve gained from being in the business,” she told Flaunt magazine. "People have opinions and sometimes maybe they’re not good opinions of people in your family. I’ve never gotten a job because of it, I know I definitely have lost a couple of jobs because of it.”
And while Emma didn’t mention what gig exactly she’d lost, she did take aim at the 2022 New York magazine feature that ignited the debate among Hollywood’s offspring.
“It was a cheap shot to put all the celebrity kids on the cover of a magazine on babies’ bodies,” the 33-year-old said. “It’s like maybe the ‘Nepo Baby’ conversation would’ve been a more interesting article written intelligently in Vanity Fair with nuance, but instead, it was kind of this viral hating-on-people thing.”
The American Horror Story star has often pushed back on the label.
“I've auditioned for so many things and never gotten the part,” she admitted to PopEater in 2011. “It's like, you know, maybe someone can get you one part, but they can't really get you 10 parts.”
While the mom of son Rhodes, 3, has taken her stance on nepotism, other stars are feeling quite the opposite about their family influence.
Take, for instance, Maya Hawke, whose parents are Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
“I think I'll get a couple chances on their name and then if I suck, I'll get kicked out of the kingdom,” the Stranger Things star has admitted. “And that's what should happen. So I'm just going to try not to suck.”
